     Now,  I spoke with a mutual friend of Mike JN's and I.  It seems Mike
    is doing fine although he's finding it tough to find a job in personell
    which is his field.  John (our mutual friend) is going to pass on to

    and that we are starting another one in his honor...  It WILL make his

in particular obnoxious and bothersome?   Isn't it just an arena for
folks to see themselves in notes?  TO talk about bodily excretions and
the like?   You can go on a quest to hit some 'numbers' in this
rendition.   This will be my last note in this topic.  

So TCM, you can simply scintillate all of us with Junk Notes.  No one
will be bothered at all.

    This one topic does the art of Junk Noting a disservice.  I think TCM
    should moderate it.

    should contribute to the JN note if you like, if note... your loss

     I think MAC has a point.  Saw has been (IMHO) VERY generous to allow
    this topic to continue after the debachel to .10000 for ::SpORTS_91.
    We should try to learn from some of our (and I've made a bunch) really
    stupid mistakes and take ::SPORTS to a higer plane.

I deleted the note, Yoseff.  I forgot that you didn't have a sense of humor.  I
strongly doubt that you'll suffer any serious consequences from my note, and
don't really think that your workstation will suffer much more than a few
rejected DECnet connect attempts.  If you find that to not be the case, please
provide me with a list of names of people who are attacking your workstation
and I'll send them all an explanation and get them to stop.

Do not do anything to my workstation.  That would be childish.

Actually it is fairly simple. Attack me thats fine, never asked a mod to delete
something for that reason; and I joke around with the best of 'em - give and 
take is fine. Only thing I ask is don't mess with my machines. Lots of traffic
because of .31 or whatever, nah its more of a principle at play.

And now back to regular junk noting and non-philosophical discussions.

    Yabbut the drive in ta work was an exercise.  At around 6:00AM we had
    maybe 1" on the ground.  By 7:30 there was almost 5".  Since the
    temperature was low-mid 30's, there was slush.
    
    4casters, during the drive in, said maybe 6-8 inches potential (by
    tomorrow).

    what golf is.  We could play for a p-name per week per hole.  By the
    time we made the turn you would be 9 weeks in the hole with 9 more to
    come.  Hell,  I'll even give ya a a 1 stroke handicap per hole.
    
     Links is great...  Ive played it on the 386 and a MAC.  My SO is the 
    quality MGR at Apple here in Fountain Colorado.  She's got a Quadra at
    home and it is killer.  I've also played it on the new power book.
    Not officially released yet so should say much about it accept it's

    Gee, when I microwave my Cheez Whiz, I use a Cheez-Whiz condom.  Keeps
    all the Whiz contained.  Just a note: Don't reuse the condom.  It will

	Before I present the results of the Bad Song Survey, here's an
important:
	BRAIN TAKEOVER ALERT
	Be advised that this column names certain songs that you hate and
have tried to suppress, but as soon as you read their names your brain
will start singing, ``Yoouunngg girl, get out of my mind; my love for
you is way out of line ...'' over and over AND YOU CAN'T STOP IT
AIEEEEEEE. Thank you.
	First, I have NEVER written a column that got a bigger response than
the one announcing the Bad Song Survey. Over 10,000 readers voted, with
cards still coming in. Also, wherever I went people expressed their
views to me, often gripping my shirt to emphasize their points. (``You
know that song about pina coladas? I hate that song. I HATE IT!'') Song
badness is an issue that Americans care deeply about.
	Second, you Neil Diamond fans out there can stop writing irate,
unsigned letters telling me that I am not worthy to be a dandruff flake
on Neil's head, OK? (Not that I am saying Neil has dandruff.) Because
you have convinced me: Neil Diamond is GOD. I no longer see anything but
genius in the song where he complains that his chair can't hear him.
Unfortunately, a lot of survey voters are not so crazy about Neil's
work, especially the part of ``Play Me'' where he sings:
	``... song she sang to me,
	song she brang to me ...''
	Of course I think those lyrics are brilliant; however, they brang out
a lot of hostility in the readers. But not as much as ``Lovin' You,''
sung by Minnie Riperton, or ``Sometimes When We Touch,'' sung by Dan
Hill, who sounds like he's having his prostate examined by Captain Hook.
	Many people still deeply resent these songs. Many others would not
rule out capital punishment for anyone convicted of having had anything
to do with Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (``Woman,'' ``Young Girl'' and
``This Girl Is a Woman Now,'' which some voters argue are all the same
song).
	Likewise there are boiling pools of animosity out there for Barry ``I
Write the Songs'' Manilow, Olivia ``Have You Never Been Mellow'' Newton-
John, Gilbert ``Alone Again, Naturally'' O'Sullivan, The Village
``YMCA'' People, Tony ``Knock Three Times'' Orlando, and of course Yoko
``Every Song I Ever Performed'' Ono. And there is no love lost for the
Singing Nun.
	The voters are ANGRY. A typical postcard states: ``The number one
worst piece of pus-oozing, vomit-inducing, camel-spitting, cow-phlegm
rock song EVER in the history of the SOLAR system is `Dreams of the
Everyday Housewife.''' (Amazingly, this song was NOT performed by Gary
Puckett and the Union Gap.)
	Here are some other typical statements:
	-- ``I'd rather chew a jumbo roll of tinfoil than hear `Hey Paula' by
Paul and Paula.''
	-- ``Whenever I hear the Four Seasons' `Walk Like a Man,' I want to
scream, `Frankie, SING like a man!'''
	-- ``I wholeheartedly believe that `Ballerina Girl' is responsible for
90 percent of the violent crimes in North America today.''
	-- ``I nominate every song ever sung by the Doobie Brothers. Future
ones also.''
	-- ``Have you noticed how the hole in the ozone layer has grown
progressively larger since rap got popular?''
	Sometimes the voters were so angry that they weren't even sure of the
name of the song they hated. There were votes against ``These Boots Are
Made For Stomping''; the Beach Boys' classic ``Carolina Girls''; ``I'm
Nothing But a Hound Dog''; and ``Ain't No Woman Like The One-Eyed Gott.
'' A lot of people voted for ``The Lion Sleeps Tonight,'' offering a
variety of interpretations of the chorus, including: ``Weem-o-wep,''
``Wee-ma-wack,'' ``Weena-wack,'' ``A-ween-a-wap'' and ``Wingle whip.''
	Many readers are still very hostile toward the song ``Wildfire,'' in
which singer Michael Murphy wails for what seems like 97 minutes about a
lost pony. (As one voter put it: ``Break a leg, Wildfire.'') Voter

	-- ``La Bamba,'' because the lyrics, translated, are: ``I am not a
sailor. I am a captain, I am a captain, I am a captain.'' And he is
probably glad.
	-- ``Johnny Get Angry,'' performed by Joanie Sommers, who sings:
``Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad; Give me the biggest lecture I ever

	-- ``Take The Money And Run,'' in which Steve Miller attempts to rhyme
``Texas'' with ``what the facts is,'' not to mention ``hassle'' with

Along those lines. One of the media advance people for Clinton's bus tour was
tour to Washingotn DC was passing out a CD that had on it songs that had
been used often during the campaign. He went out of his way to let the press
know that "Don't Stop" was on the CD. Apparently the press is thoroughly fed
up with that tune and made some gagging sounds.


98.5 in Boston has something they call 7 at 7. That is at 7PM they do 7 songs
that are somehow related. Anyway for Monday night the theme was songs by groups
with names of Presidents in the groups name.

I came up with Jefferson Airplane (and all the various incarnations)

Hi Kev!

I'm finally up and running on the Internet. I've been here a bit over a
month, but since they've expanded and added on about 15 others since me,
they didn't get around to Internet training until Monday. Networks are truly
amazing. It seems that anyone with a computer can be linked in one way or
another, sorta like telephones might have been in their infancy.

The job is going great!  It was definitely the shot in the arm I needed.
With a smaller company (150 people) we tend to be less departmentalized and
more cross-functional than DEC really can. To paraphrase Garret Morris,
"Digital been berry, berry good to me", but it was time to move on.

They just posted a job for an Operations Support person. I can't remember
for sure, but it seems to me like this was something similar to what either
Cathy Finucane or Joann Barrows did at DEC. I'd like to tell them about this
if they might be interested. Do you know how to reach either/both of them?

MathWorks is also hiring for workstation development and QA engineering,
if'n you know anyone who might be interested.

I never liked cats too much until this sort of wild farm cat had
two kittens under my front step.   After a couple of weeks, she took
one cat and left, leaving this one little kitty under the step.

Well, a couple of days after I realized she had done that, I figured
I'd better get some food for the kitty or it would die.   So I did.

A couple of days after that, I called the vet to see what I should do,
and the vet said to bring it in the house and tame it.   I did.


Turned out that the mother left it because it was deformed.   Most cats,
if they are missing a digit, will have four toes, no thumb.  This cat
has three toes and a thumb, and that's why the mother left it.

Well, to make a long story even longer, the cat and my dog got along
GREAT.   

When I went to France, I gave the cat to my Mom to take care of and she's
had it ever since.  I swear that cat is more pampered than me....8^)

couldn't keep up with the amount of 486 processors folks were ordering,

I bought what I thought was a pound of coffee the other day.  The can
is the same size that a pound can always has been.  Well, I got home
and looked at the can and lo and behold it only had 13 oz in it.


The thing with laundry detergent that gets back at the manufacturer is
that for the most part, you can make do with less than the amount the
recommend to use.

Here's a great trick to try on your families tonight.

It's a Mind REading Trick.



	Tell the person you are going to read their mind.

	Tell them to pick a number between 1 and 10 and that
	   they shouldn't tell you what it is.

	Have them multiply the number by 9.

	Have them take the results and add the two digits together
	   to obtain a sum.

	Have them subtract 5 from the sum.

	Have them match the resulting number up with the corresponding
	   letter of the alphabet (ie a=1, b=2 etc).


	Have them think of a country that begins with that letter.

	Have them think of an animal that begins with the second letter
	   of the country.

	Have them think of the color of that animal.

	
	Then tell them they just thought of a gray elephant in Denmark.


Here's the trick.

	Any number between 1 and 10 multiplied by 9 gives you a multiple
	of 9 between 9 and 90.  Adding the two digits together will
	ALWAYS give you 9.

You want fish sticks? Come over to my house. We'll be dumping the entire 
contents of our refrigerator and freezer tomorrow (if we can). Ya see that
big windstorm we had out here has had power out at our house for 55 hours (and
counting). Needless to say I'm a little ticked at the power company (basically
because they restored power to business first and residences last).

Lucky for us we had some friends with power that we stayed at last night. We 
burnt up any wood we had the first night trying to keep the house warm. Trying
to keep a 7 month old entertained by candlelight has been a real treat. Things
don't look real good for getting power back tonight either...Luckily it has
stayed warm enough so we don't have to worry about freezing pipes....The
house was a brisk 42 degrees when I stopped by this morning...

So if ya want some unfrozen fish sticks or some slightly soft hamburg feel free
to give me a call and I'll mail it to ya...it'll probably stay cooler via mail
then it would in our fridge....

Can you sue the power companies for being stupid and prioritizing things the
wrong way? 

And how come they don't have a way on a forced hot air gas system to turn it on 
manually? We've got gas but the thermostat is electric so the furnace doesn't
get a signal to turn itself on? If we could fire up the furnace we could get 
enough flow through the system via convection to make the house bearably warm
I guess....

re Power Outages:

	The best investment my folks ever made was in a little
	Honda generator.  When their power would go out, they'd
	use it to "charge up" the fridge, and to put on the pump.
	(they don't have town water, have a well instead, so
	 they need power to run the pump).

	They liked it so much that when they had a little extra
	cash, they bought a larger generator, and had it hooked
	into the electric service.

	The nice part about that was that the little Honda generator
	became available for when MY power goes out.

	I hope you haven't had anything to eat recently, because, as promised
last week, today I am presenting the winners of the Bad Song Survey.
	In analyzing these results, I had to make a few adjustments. For
example, the Bob Dylan song ``Lay Lady Lay'' would have easily won as
Worst Overall Song, with 17,006 votes, except that I had to disallow 17,
004 votes on the grounds that they were cast by my Research Department,
Judi Smith, who tabulated the votes, and who HATES ``Lay Lady Lay.''
	To win, a song had to be known well enough that a lot of people could
hate it. This is a shame in a way, because some obscure songs that
people voted for are wonderfully hideous. One reader sent a tape of a
song called ``Hooty Sapperticker'' by a group called ``Barbara and the
Boys.'' This could be the worst song I've ever heard. It consists almost
entirely of The Boys singing ``Hooty! Hooty! Hooty!'' and then Barbara
saying: ``Howdy Hooty Sapperticker!''
	Several readers sent in an amazing CD from Rhino Records called
``Golden Throats,'' which consists of popular actors attempting to sing
popular music, including William Shatner attempting ``Lucy In The Sky
With Diamonds,'' Leonard Nimoy attempting ``Proud Mary,'' Mae West
attempting ``Twist and Shout,'' Eddie Albert attempting ``Blowin' in the
Wind,'' and -- this is my favorite -- Jack `` Soul'' Webb attempting ``Try
a Little Tenderness.'' You need this CD.
	But now for our survey results. Without question, the voters' choice
for Worst Song -- in both the Worst Overall AND Worst Lyrics category --
is ... (drum roll ...)
	``MacArthur Park,'' as sung by Richard Harris, and later remade, for
no comprehensible reason, by Donna Summer.
	It's hard to argue with this selection. My 12-year-old son, Rob, was
going through a pile of ballots, and he asked me how ``MacArthur Park''
goes, so I sang it, giving it my best shot, and Rob laughed so hard that
when I got to the part about leaving the cake out in the rain, and it
took so long to bake it, and I'll never have that recipe again, Rob was
on the floor. He didn't BELIEVE those lyrics were real. He was SURE his
wacky old humor-columnist dad was making them up.
	The clear runner-up, again in both categories, is ``Yummy Yummy Yummy
(I Got Love In My Tummy),'' performed by Ohio Express. (A voter sent me
an even WORSE version of this, performed by actress Julie London, who at
one time -- and don't tell me this is mere coincidence -- was married to
Jack Webb.)
	Coming in a strong third is ``(You're) Having My Baby'' by Paul Anka.
This song is deeply hated. As one voter put it: ``It has no redeeming
value whatsoever -- except my friend Brian yelled out during the birth
scene in the sequel to `The Fly' in full song, `Having my maggot!'''
	Honorable mention goes to Bobby Goldsboro, who got many votes for
various songs, especially ``Honey.'' One voter wrote: ``Why does
everybody hate Bobby Goldsboro's `Honey'? I hate it too, but I want to
know WHY.''
	Why? Consider this verse: ``She wrecked the car and she was sad; And
so afraid that I'd be mad, but what the heck; Tho' I pretended hard to
be; Guess you could say she saw through me; And hugged my neck.''
	As one reader observed: ``Bobby never caught on that he could have
bored a hole in himself and let the sap out.''
	A recent song that has aroused great hostility is ``Achy Breaky
Heart,'' by Billy Ray Cyrus. According to voter Mark Freeman, the song
sounds like this: ``You can tell my lips, or you can tell my hips, that
you're going to dump me if you can; But don't tell my liver, it never
would forgive her, it might blow up and circumcize this man!''
	Many voters feel a special Lifetime Bad Achievement Award should go
to Mac Davis, who wrote ``In the Ghetto,'' ``Watching Scotty Grow,'' AND
``Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me,'' which contains one of the worst lines
in musical history: ``You're a hot-blooded woman-child; And it's warm
where you're touching me.'' That might be as bad as the part in
``Careless Whisper'' where George Michael sings: ``I'm never gonna dance
again; Guilty feet have got no rhythm.''
	Speaking of bad lyrics, many voters also cited Paul McCartney, who,
ever since his body was taken over by a pod person, has been writing
things like: ``Someone's knockin' at the door; Somebody's ringin' the
bell; (repeat); Do me a favor, open the door, and let him in.''
	There were strong votes for various tragedy songs, especially ``Teen
Angel'' (``I'll never kiss your lips again; They buried you today.'')
and ``Timothy,'' a song about -- really -- three trapped miners, two of
whom wind up EATING the third.
	Other tremendously unpopular songs, for their lyrics or overall
badness, are: ``Muskrat Love,'' ``Sugar Sugar,'' ``I'm Too Sexy,''
``Surfin' Bird,'' ``I've Never Been To Me,'' ``In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,''
``Afternoon Delight,'' ``Feelings,'' ``You Light Up My Life'' and ``In
the Year 2525'' (VIOLENT hatred for this song).
	In closing, let me say that you voters have performed a
major public service, and that just because your song didn't make
the list, that doesn't mean it isn't awful (unless you were one of
the badly misguided people who voted for ``The Tupperware Song'').
Let me also say that I am very relieved to learn that there
are people besides me who hate ``Stairway to Heaven.''  Thank you.

    As a joke, we actually paid a DJ at a friend's wedding to play this and
    say the Groom dedicated it to the Bride.  Shoulda seen the reactions of

The ONLY version of MacArthur Park that was ever any good was 
Maynard Fergusen's version.  Any trumpet player worth his chops would
have given anything to be able to sound like Maynard doing that solo
part.

We actually played the arrangement one summer at music camp.  Our
jazz band director from the camp was just out of the Navy and brought
the arrangement with him.  I guess he and his buddies had sat down
and written the whole thing out by ear.

Anyway, it was a thrill to play that arrangement.  I got to play
lead trumpet while Scott, the director played Maynard's part.

                    Westfield Metal Enclosures Manufacturing Unit 

  Digital this morning informed employees at its Metal Enclosures Manufacturing 
  Unit in Westfield, Massachusetts, that it intends to sell the unit.  The 
  business, which opened in 1970, currently employs approximately 445 people 
  and is located in a 535,000 square-foot facility on approximately 200 acres. 
  Westfield manufactures and supplies a large portion of Digital's metal 
  enclosure requirements.  The corporation intends to sell it as an intact 
  business. 

  Ed McDonough, vice president, Manufacturing and Logistics, said the decision 
  reflects the company's manufacturing strategy.  "Our manufacturing strategy 
  centers around investing in areas that support our core competencies and 
  divesting ourselves in areas that do not differentiate us. 

  "While we are very proud of the contribution that the Metal Enclosures 
  Manufacturing Unit has made to our product offerings, it does not represent a 
  core competency for Digital under the current strategy," he added. "It is our 
  intention to sell the unit to an entity for whom metals manufacturing is its 
  primary business. In this way, Westfield can continue to be an important 
  part of Digital's supply chain."

              Lawrance Livermore Discovers New Element

  The heaviest element known to science was recently discovered by a
 Lawrance Livermore Laboratories physicists. The element, tentatively
 named "Administratium " has no protrons or electrons and thus has an
 atomic number of 0. However it does have 1 neutron, 125 assistant
 neutrons, 75 vice neutrons and 111 assistant vice neutrons. This gives
 it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by a
 force that involves the continuous exchange of meson-like particles
 called morons.

  Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. However, it can be
 detected chemically as it impedes every reaction it comes in contact
 with. According to the discoverers, a minute amount of Administratium
 caused one reaction to take over four days to complete when it normally
 would have occurred in in less than one second. Administratium has a
 normal half-life ofof approximately three years, at which time it does
 not actually decay but undergoes a reorganization in which assistant
 neutrons, vice neutrons and assistant vice neutrons exchange places.
 Some studies have shown that the atomic mass actually increases after
 each reorganization.

  Research at other laboratories indicates that Administratium occurs
 naturally in the atmosphere. It tends to concentrate at certain points
 such as government agencies, large corporations and universities and
 can usually found in the newest, best appointed and best maintained
 buildings.

  Scientist point out that Administratium is known to be toxic at any
 level of concentration and can easily destroy any productive reaction
 where it is allowed to accumulate. Attempts are being made to determine
 how Administratium can be controlled to prevent the irreversible
 damage, but results to date are not promising.

Ya gotta wonder about the timing of .229. But it has been a problem 
for at least the last 30 years.

It was a Lays commercial, a take off on the one with Larry Bird and Kareem
a while back.

Landry is talking to all these NFL stars (Boomer, Phil Simms, a few others,
including Ditka) and Landry is betting them they can tell the difference
with a Lays Potato Chip.

Of course, when they ask what the bet is, he removes his hat and shows
his bald haid.


On the continuation, you see all the guys bald (Phil Simms was wicked
funny) and bemoaning how Landry was right.   One of the guys says
"right Mike?....right, Mike?"

Way over in the corner by himself is a bald Ditka, mumbling to himself.

Too funny!

    That was also pretty funny at the end of the Lay's commercial when
    they're all just sitting there laughing, "At least no one can see us up 
    here."
    
    In the Shaq commercial, what did he say to those guys after he broke
    the glass and handed them the rim?  I missed the line because the

I agree with Kev about the Canary commercial.  It was good.  But
the other Lee commercial was good, too.

That was the one where the teenage girl was trying to pull her
jeans on, and her boyfried could see her in silhouette through
her window.  She tripped, and her dressing dummy fell on top of
her, and her legs went up just like, well, you get the picture.
When the boyfriend saw the, the flowers in his hand wilted.

    we're here to update you on "Digger's Super Bowl Discovery".
    
    In our previous episodes, you've seen Digger chomp on socks, kleenex,
    pallets, golf balls, sod, crickets, "normal" chew bones, and 
    table scraps (except for tomato's).
    
    In this late breaking news, the man with Montezuma's revenge  :*(
    reporting live, but not on the scene,  wants to tell you that nature
    must have driven Digger_the_Goat_Dog to increase the fiber in his diet
    - That's right folks, fiber, probably to keep him regular!
    
    Digger's secret is to dip into the 3lb. coffee can which was being used
    to hold all the dry roasted peanut shells, lap up a shell or two and
    promptly drop them onto the rug, while lying down for a quick snack.
    Tongue does a python-like curl around the shells, and slowly moves
    the shells into the "disposal area". Chomp, Chomp, swallow......
    all gone!

    So there you have it, another addition to the growing list of exotic
    quasi foodstuffs consumed by ::Sports favorite canine -

    I have a hard time listening to Andelman. He has become real inane and
    way out there on his own show. I like him better on the Sports Huddle

    I caught a bit of his "joke" about Andre and found it lame and
    tasteless. Especially when some of the wrasslin' yahoos sounded like
    they were going to wear black and mourn for a month. Lots of gray
    matter challenged people out there.
    I caught the finale of it as he finally "believed" andre was daid and
    wouldn't be on his show Friday. Anvilhaid decided t try to schedule
    Michael Landon or Charley Gehringer instead. Gallows humor at its
    worst.

    	Geez, speaking of the WWF, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned
    (or did they) that Andre the Giant passed away over the weekend.  Andre
    was a mere 46 years old and was 7'4'', 520 lbs.  Appears that he 
    had requested to be cremated... I bet the poll bearers were happy

    	It was just a joke, did you hear him say to Lou,Lou,Lou, that if
        he was indeed dead he was going to place a call to Michael Landon
        to see if he would take his place for fridays show. I agree however
        that it was in poor taste. How about last week when he called up
        the cemetary in L.A. looking for Lee VanCleef! He was the guy who
        played opposite Clint Eastwood in the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

    Anvilhead's joke was an obvious one and while it wasn't *that* funny I
    didn't think it was tasteless.  C'mon, a pro wrestling celebrity passed
    on to the great tag-team match in the sky would probably love the idea
    of such a hoax.  As a wrestler he's been pulling them off all his life 
    and would probably relish just one last one, the best part being that
    as has been mentioned a whole bunch of wrestling-fan yahoos were taking

                           The Brain Behind NT
                        Microsoft's David Cutler
                         UNIXWorld February 1993


David Cutler once walked into a high-level meeting at Digital Equipment
Corp. wearing a T-shirt that read, You're Screwing Me!" the company -true
to the shirts word- eventually did.

Today, he's trying to screw DEC and, in passing, the UNIX industry. Here's
why.

Cutler, now Microsoft Corp.'s director of Windows NT Development, will
never forget the October day in 1988 when he brought an edict from DEC's
Maynard, Mass. headquarters -or Mecca as he sarcastically calls it- to the
180 people in DEC West's" Seattle offices announcing the cancellation of
their three year old project It was the worst day of his life.

Cutler, the head of the development team for the successful VMS operating
system, was working on an advanced operating system for DEC's Prism line of
computers. The new operating system was intended to replace both VMS and
Ultrix, DEC's version of UNIX but DEC canceled the Prism line because it
could obsolete the company's proprietary products. "Three years of
dedicated work went down the drain," he says ruefully. And he's still mad.

The cancellation of Prism -about which DEC spokespeople refuse to speak-
clearly hurt Cutler's pride. He had spent -wasted- three years of his life
working on the project. So Cutler, who is known for his ordinarily Marine
drill instructor approach to management, told the staff the bad news and
then gave them a furlough -a one month paid vacation- without getting
approval from higher-ups.

He spent the month weighing his options. Cutler had thought about quitting
DEC before. In 1978, he interviewed with Intel Corp. because he wanted to
move to the west coast A year later, he resigned from DEC to start a
compiler company, but a group of senior-level executives convinced him to
reconsider. He stayed under the condition that he would be able to form
his own engineering facility outside of New England: DEC West. But although
he enjoyed the autonomy of being away from the "bullshit" in Maynard, DEC's
cancellation of Prism was too much for him.

After Prism was killed, some venture capitalists wanted to give Cutler
money for his own company. He considered the offers, but he didn't want to
run a company, he wanted to develop operating systems. News leaked to
Microsoft executives that Cutler wanted out of DEC.

DEC's Loss, Microsoft's Gain The timing couldn't have been better for
Microsoft, which was struggling through its advanced operating system
strategy. Its own next-generation operating system -OS/2 l.0 had started
shipping in December 1987, but it was a flop. Why did it fail? For one
thing, the product was co-developed by IBM Corp. and Microsoft and the two
companies fought through the entire project.

Microsoft needed a plan for the future. Be problem was that as processors
became faster, users wanted to run more advanced applications and many
power users were turning to UNIX for multitasking solutions. DOS, which was
Microsoft's nearly 20 year old technology, couldn't handle robust
multitasking applications.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates talked with Cutler. He had been courting him
to build a new portable operating system since August 1988. Cutler decided
to join Microsoft because the company's wide distribution meant that any
operating system he helped design was likely to afford him far more
recognition than would a DEC-only operating system. This was Cutler's
chance to fulfill his goal of writing the Next Great Operating System.

And to get back at DEC.

He moved the 10 blocks to Microsoft. A group of 16 disgruntled DEC
consulting engineers joined him. Consulting engineers are considered DEC's
most talented software engineers. Eventually, about 40 more DEC programmers
signed on with the software giant

If there's one thing I want to do it's to beat DEC," says Cutler "I think
the greatest way to do that is for them to have to buy and sell an
operating system that they could have gotten for free if they had not
driven me out."

Cutler says he still feels a sense of betrayal, and with betrayal comes
mistrust-especially of what he calls the "weather vane" marketers at DEC
who blocked his vision for developing great operating systems. People who
have worked with Cutler say he wants -needs- NT to be successful so he can
get back at the doubters. Is he confident? "Windows NT could very easily
sell more copies in its first year of existence than the sum total of all
UNIX systems ever sold," says Cutler. He adds that he doesn't have a gripe
with UNIX itself, but with the people who adamantly support it. He
disdainfully call them "religious bigots."

UNIX isn't going to die, he predicts, but NT will "seriously cut into UNIX
sales." He explains that his confidence stems from knowing that NT is not a
half-baked operating system. NT is not just two or three years old, he
believes, but actually the product of many years of DEC-funded research.

He's No Nerd (He Says)

Unlike Rich Kid Gates, Cutler's father was a janitor and his mother worked
in various civil service jobs. Cutler says they didn't have much money. As
a high-school student the broad shouldered Cutler was an avid athlete who
earned 15 letters. His athletic prowess helped him get a scholarship to
attend Michigan's Olivet College, where he was quarterback of the football
team and point guard of the basketball team. He graduated with a major in
mathematics and a minor in physics.

After college he worked for E.I. Du Pont deNemours and Co. in Wilmington,
Del., maintaining a Univac 1108. In August 1971, Cutler decided he wanted
to work for a computer company not be a computer administrator

He says he went to work for DEC because at the time it was "very
freewheeling," and that "people worked night and day at DEC to implement
their own ideas."

At DEC he was the principal designer and implementer of RSX-llM, a popular
real-time system that ran on DEC's PDP-11 series. then he was the key
designer for VAXELN, an embedded system toolkit for Microvax processors.
"It was far too far ahead of its time for Digital to fathom," says Cutler
unable to resist a jab at his prior employer. "It was never sold
aggressively for fear of cannibalizing VMS sales."

Although Cutler has worked on many operating systems, he claims he's no
"intellectual nerd." Responding to a direct question, he says he can beat
Gates in a wrestling match (which probably isn't saying a lot). He's known
as an avid skier who enjoys heli-skiing. Is he married? "No," he says,
"that is a mistake you only make twice."

the 50-year-old prefers work to recreation. He worked 12 hours a day, seven
days a week, for 18 months on the RSX-l1M project. "There is code in
RSX-llM that is authored by me dated Christmas Day, " he says.

"The guy is very intense," says a former DEC West engineer, "and he runs a
very tight ship."

And he can be emotional. Just before the second prerelease of NT, a
Microsoft engineer broke a kernel debugger. Cutler wanted to know what had
been done wrong. Someone replied that a technical flaw in the code had been
"corrected." Cutler's reaction? He put his fist through the wall. About two
months later at his 50th birthday party, the NT team presented him with the
"hole" in a picture frame.

"Once I accept an assignment I finish it. Nothing gets in the way save for
total cancellation of the project" he says. What kind of a boss is he?
"People that don't do their job get run over," he explains.

Should the UNIX world be scared of this guy? Yes.

UNIX? Blab!
Cutler believes NT will easily outsell UNIX partly, he claims, because NT
is written from scratch by programmers who understand complex operating
systems.

Says Michael Goulde, editor of the Open Information Systems newsletter,
"One condition Cutler had placed on coming to Microsoft was that he could
build a real operating system, not a run-time environment like DOS, and
not, in his words, "an 80's operating system built with 70s technology like
OS/2," he says. "The way momentum builds among developers is interesting.
They are so frustrated with what they have to work with today, that
anything Microsoft gives them to improve their lots is a gift from heaven.
No questions asked."

Cutler is known as an anti- UNIX bigot, a reputation he's trying
unsuccessfully to shake.

"I don't hate UNIX. I do, however think the quality of UNIX is poor." He
says UNIX has improved in reliability, but it has an inherently weak
command interface. Because UNIX is used in universities, people fall in
love with it because they don't know anything else."

"In general, [UNIX] has been hacked on by a plethora of graduate students
for many years," he explains. `When done this way, things don't tend to be
reliable or well-implemented. I'm sure the designers of UNIX would like to
have a clean slate and start over."

The Final Irony

Yes, David Cutler is serious. He's still smarting from DEC's cancellation
of Prism. "I don't believe I will ever get over it," he says. And he's
rectifying his bitterness by trying to make a great operating system. A
better operating system than UNIX. "There are lots of ways to build
operating systems," he says. UNIX is just one of those ways. People have
built lots of other systems that were just as good, if not better "

"UNIX is akin to a religion to some," he says. "If things aren't done like
they are in UNIX, then they must be bad. Sorry, I don't believe in this
religion."

But in some ways, Cutler does have religious convictions. He's a guy with
strong beliefs about operating systems. He wants to write the most
advanced, cleanest system ever. He also wants it to rule the world.

    Actually, the final irony is that a DEC computer was the first to run
    NT.

I doubt that yet another proprietary operating system by DEC on top of 
DEC hardware would have taken the market by storm. It certainly wouldn't be 
touted as a de facto standard like some people are proclaiming NT to be.

People out here are of two camps about Cutler...Either he was god because
he stood up for his vision and for his people or he was a prima donna that
if he couldn't play the game his way took his ball and went home. Never having
met the man I don't have an opinion either way. I do know that he's got more
money then I could ever dream about, a nice house on Lake Washington and a
company that was willing to back his vision to the hilt. 

In any case it's past history and should haves and could haves will never amount
to anything and we (DEC) should look forward instead of backward and try and
seek out the visionaries we still have within the company and try listening
to them instead of letting a bunch of managers and VP's flip flop back and
forth on every issue. I see now that all out of all those products that
were supposedly cancelled only 5 have definately been retired. I still can't
figure out why DECwrite and Rally were refunded. It would have been cheaper to
buy each customer that wanted decwrite a PC and teach them how to use MSWord 
and network them in with a cluster than to keep funding a word processor that
will never make us any $$$$ in profit. I hope I don't offend anybody that 
work(ed) on DECwrite but the market it is geared at isn't big enough to 
support it.

PRISM, MICA and OSIX were good ideas that were managed poorly. In any case it's
water under the bridge that we should learn from and use to forge forward.

Back to Seinfeld.  Didn't the NBC Exec say that his daughter was 15?  I 
realize that the actress who played the part was older than that, but I 
thought it was questionable to be setting up a scene that featured a 15 year

But L.A. Law had the real show stopper.  I was a bit surprised when
you saw the backside of the waitresses in the "Gentlemen's Club".  But
I was very surprised when they showed the stripper.

    Sorry Metz, you jumped the gun on this one.  That was one of the few
    shows we made a point of watching.  They handled some tough issues on
    that show (i.e., transvestite teaching elementary school, incest,
    polygamy etc.).  I did get a kick out of the twins a couple weeks ago
    though ;-)

between notes today) so I created a shadow copy at ALPHAX::SPORTS.  This
conference will be much faster to access (if it's not, send me mail), but is
    write-only.  You can read the shadow copy and if you'd like to reply to the
    ^^^^^^^^^^
original without opening it, you can investigate PAN (see ROCKS::PAN).

The conferences are synchronized every half hour so the shadow copy should
always be fairly close to the original in content.

The name of the very first node I ever worked on was FRED.  It stood
for F___ing Ridiculous Electronic Device....


And yes, they showed him shooting up computers.  But actually it was just
terminals.  He shot up a bunch of terminals with a shotgun and a handgun.

    While I'm not a fan of MJ, nor do I think he's done himself any favors
    with the plastic surgery, I was pleasantly surprised by his gentleness
    and usually quiet attention given to young children, particularly those 
    that have some form of physical problems.
    
    I couldn't care less about the state of his virginity; none of my
    business and certainly not related to his ability to entertain.  I'm
    not even sure why the question of virginity was asked.  
    
    While he may be somewhat of a quirky character, it doesn't appear that
    his actions have any negative effect on others.

FWIW, they did a piece on the news last night on the skin condition that
MJ says he has.  Supposedly it's pretty common amongs blacks and whites.

They showed some photos of folks with their skins literally "white" (and

Having watched both Seinfeld and HI, I've come to the conclusion that you
can't really compare them.  The two types of comedy going on are so different
that it's like apples an oranges.

And aside from what I call "insult comedy", I don't really feel that there
is any bad form of comedy.  

IMO, Seinfeld, Roseanne and HI all do so well for the same reason Shakespeare's
stuff survives today -- they all look at the human condition, and say
something relevant about it.   People can always identify with that....


Unfortunately, I missed Seinfeld on Thursday....

comedy special on HBO.  

I watched part of it last Saturday night and I laughed so hard I
needed Depends.   He's got one of the funniest routines I've seen in

    I just had to get this in here, maybe give someone a smile before the
    dreaded Monday comes to a close.
    
    This afternoon, me and Mrs. JaKe are in the living room when Nathan,
    age 3, walks in grasping himself...er...let's just say below the waist
    but above the hips.  Nathan has only been out of diapers fer 6 mos or
    so, so he has this new "plaything" down there that I think he feels(no
    pun intended) will fly away if he lets go of it.
    
    Well, even little kids have problems of unwanted woodies now and then,
    and Nathan was experiencing the tail end of one when he walked into the
    room.
    
    My wife grabbed his arm and pulled it so his hand came out of his

I'd ad both Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy to the list of vulgar insult comedy.
I've love both of them in their movie roles but can't stand the stand up acts
of either. 

Heck,I can get up on stage and swear up a blue streak if it'll get me millions
of $$$$.

I'm not against profanity if it fits into the act. George Carlin used to 
lace his act up with swears pretty well but it was incorporated into a 
decent, well thought out stand up act...

Buddy Hacket is another one of those vulgar types who I don;t find terribly 
funny in a stand up role...

I have gone through 3 Quickshot Warrior 5's in the past 6 months.
I like the feel of them - reminds me of my old C64.
The suction cups are worthless.

I bought mine for $10 at Wal-Mart.
Since they have a one-year warranty, I just keep
taking the broken ones back to Wal-Mart for exchange.
Maybe when the year is up I will buy another.
$10 a year for a joystick is not bad.

The only complaint about the QW5 is that the trim knobs are right where
my hand is so I end up moving them accidently every now and then.
Oh well. I can live with that.

I have never had any compatibility problems with it - wait yes
I have one game - Jill of the Jungle 2 - wouldn't work at all

Watched Northern Exposure last night.

Favorite part was the Chris-Maurice thing.

I thought the Joel-Maggie thing was totally stupid.  I had seen an
interview with Rob Morrow where he stated that he wished the scene
had been more explicit.   After seeing it, I can't say that it was
anywhere near explicit to begin with, never mind being able to say
"more" explicit.

All in all, it was pretty stupid.....

Judas played for the Stoners.  Jesus did a short stint with the Jerusalem
Fishermen, but the owner of the Fishermen decided he wanted to finance
a play (to be presented before the Roman Governor) so he sold Jesus to
the Nazareth team for an undisclosed sum of sheckels.

The standings scrolls have never been found, but legend has it that
the Jerusalem Fishermen NEVER won a champeenship after that, and were
disbanded about 15 years later......

Big Brother isn't watching but Continental Cablevision is. During last 
November's pay-per-view Holyfield-Bowe heavyweight title bout, the
Springfield, Mass., cable TV operator aired a free T shirt ad using a new
technology:  the ad appeared only on sets using illegal signal decoders. 
More than 140 saps phoned in for the shirts.  Continental has send them
letters offering to settle the matter for $2,000, and has already received
several checks.  Since federal law allows fines of $10,000, says Continental
VP Geoffrey Little, "we consider the settlement fee generous." Anyone who
disagrees, he says, will find himself involved in another fight--in court.

    I am having trouble with my VCR.  I can record things but I do not get
    any sound on the tape.  Can anyone help ?
    
    Also since I live in Shrewsbury I am obligated to use their antiquated
    cable system.  It will apprently not allow me to watch one show and
    record another.  I do not want to do anything illegal, but say,
    hypothetically of course, I wanted to have that capability.  What would
    I need to do (other than buy a second TV) ?

    I had that problem with my VCR once, just fine tuned the little channel
    adjusters on top and the sound came back.
    
    As far as the cable system goes, do ya have to use a box to tune thangs
    in, or do ya just use a "cable ready" tv or VCR.  If the cable comes
    straight into the VCR, then to the TV, then ya just have to set up the
    VCR to record, and use the TV to tune it in, BUT, if the cable goes
    thru the box, then to the VCR, yer pretty much at the mercy of the
    cable company.  Unless, that is, If ya can hook the cable into the vcr,
    then the output of the VCR to the box, and on to the TV, which should
    cure yer problem.

I go from my cable box to a splitter, which goes to the VCR and the TV.  
The A/B switch then contols if the TV recives the signal from cable box or the 
VCR.  Only drawback is that you cain't record premium channels.

    The cable system I'm on uses some sort of blocking devices at the pole
    out in front of my house.  Therefore, if I want premium channels(not
    the same as premium beer), they have to come out and fiddle around up
    at the pole.  It's an antique system, but it only costs 1$11/month fer
    30 channels.

Check to be sure that your switches are set correctly.  The most obvious
one is the channel 3-4 switch.  But also there are switches for LINE
inputs etc etc, if it's a stereo VCR.  Make sure those are where they should
be.  For that, it's a good idea to RTFM (read the .... manual)  8^)


As to the record one channel, watch another:

Sounds like you've got a cable company who scrambles ALL their signals,
not just the premium stuff.  My cable company is like that.

The solution?  Two converters.  I'm not charged for the second converter,
but I do have a $20 deposit on it.  They pay interest every year on the
deposit, so it ain't so bad.   With an A/B switch and the two converters
I can watch any channel, and record any channel....

    Nah, no such luck.  I have a cable ready TV and cable ready VCR and
    there are others on the same pole that have premium channels, and I
    only get the basic stuff.
    
    They got a bos on the pole, and there are things they plug in that
    enable the premiuum channel to the house.  They cain tell if ya are
    stealing a channel by just looking up at the pole, supposedly.

               Important Information RE: E-Mail to the White House

      Yesterday, I saw several postings related to the E-mail address
for the White House.  Along with a good number of others, I worked
throughout the campaign as part of a network of E-mail volunteers for
the Clinton campaign, so I can pass along some important information
about that E-mail account.  The account is actually the personal
compuserve account of Jock Gill.  Jock worked hard (along with a handful
of programming volunteers, BBS operators, listserver maintainers, and
computer sophisticates at places such as Marist College, MIT, San
Francisco, Chicago, and elsewhere) during the campaign to put together
an E-mail system for national campaigning.  The system was later
expanded to accommodate all three major Presidential campaigns.  It was
an innovative, highly successful effort and it played a huge role in
getting campaign position statements out to a wide public.  Things
posted from that address found their way into the virtual reality as the
messages got passed along many networks from their original posting.

      Several weeks before the Inauguration of President Clinton, Jeff
Eller was appointed by the President-Elect to have overall charge of
establishing something which has never existed--an interactive public
access E-mail system into the White House and into other offices of the
administration.  Jock Gill was then hired by the administration to work
under Jeff Eller.  Currently, Jock Gill is working in an office located
in the Old Executive Office Building across the street from the White
House.  At this point, he is working alone, without a staff.  His
current assignment is to use the E-mail system (as during the campaign)
to issue official copies of White House statements, the texts of press
briefings and press conferences, copies of Executive Orders and
Presidential Memos, and the like to the virtual world of E-mail.  Since
the compuserve box is a regular personal mail box, it gets filled
quickly, especially given the high volume of mail now beginning to
arrive with the broad dissemination of his address.  Those of you who
have sent E-mail to that address may well have received an error message
stating that the box is full.  That's another way of saying it has been
overwhelmed.

      Jock has asked those of us who have been part of the volunteer
E-mail team to help him out while he works to get a good interactive
system up and running.  Basically, he has asked that everyone cooperate
and not begin sending a barrage of E-mail to that compuserve address.
The White House itself employs a large staff to handle snail mail.
Actually, at this point in the development of the White House E-mail
system, you will probably get your message through to the administration
quicker through ordinary snail mail and telephone.  Later, once the
administration's E-mail team develops the system they want and need,
E-mail contacts should became the easier route.  All things in their
time.  Once the E-mail address was circulated together with the heading
the "White House", everyone understandably believed a real system was up
and running.  Not quite yet.

      SUGGESTION: Use the compuserve address you have judiciously,
reserving it for absolutely vital contacts.  Until such time that a real
public access White house E-mail system is operational, consider relying
on the traditional means of contacting the administration.  Given what
they had to start with from the previous administration (scratch), I
have every reason to expect that Jeff Eller and Jock Gill will work
well--and as quickly as possible--to get an interactive system up and
running.  But it will take time and patience.  We can all help them
achieve that effort best if we refrain from acting as if that
non-existent system were already in place.  PLEASE HELP RELAY THIS

    host of others.  
    
    I saw Skynyrd in 1975 at Knebworth Fair in England, along with Hot
    Tuna, Todd Rundgren & Utopia, a little known band that went nowhere
    called The DOn Harrison Band, 10cc, and the Rolling Stones.  All in one
    day, all fer $9.00*5 pounds British funny money).  Not only was the
    days music great, but the inbetween shows were good, too.  Ya know, the
    stuff that happened in the audience.
    
    SOme a-hole decided between Skynyrd and 10cc to streak across the
    stage, got halfway, police in pursuit and police blocking other end of
    stage, decided to jump off stage, bad idea, stage is ~20 feet from
    ground at that point, trip to hospital, both ankles broken.  Twas a hot
    day, many exposed baby feeders, if ya gets my drift.  They brought in
    these old busses that were converted to be a kind of kitchen and they'd
    sell food outta them , one caught fire and burnt fer ~1hr.  Only
    entertainment as they were changing bands at the time.  Lasted but not
    least, absolutely NO SHORTAGE of recreational pharmaceuticals, and good
    ones at that, if'n ya know whut I mean.
    
    I had every album Skynyrd had out, and when the plane went down, I felt
    awful.  I've seen the tribute tour, and the "1991" tour, band is not
    the same, but is just as good, musically.  I like both versions of
    Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I saw the tour in 1987 and 1988.  Enjoyed it a lot.  Never saw the original

I didn't watch the awards.  I heard the Chili Peppers won something for
"Give It Away", which I liked, but other than that I didn't hear much.

Seems that Clapton won for sentimental reasons, and it would be SO cool
if MrT were back to give a great oration on the weepy-sappy awards to
Clapton....8^)

 Cmon Daryll, Clapton never had an original idea in his life. He's a great
 thief though I'll give him that much credit. When I listen to a song
 like "Cocaine" I think to myself I could be listening to worst song I've
 ever heard in my life...

    When I was in Nashua on a business trip, I was struck by two
    observations:
    
      1. You seem to have an extraordinary number of radio stations that
         appear to have an All-Clapton format.
    
      2. DECcies in ZKO attend a mind-boggling number of meetings.  Every
         time I had a meeting with someone, they were rushing from a
         meeting, were 10 minutes late, and had to rush off to another meeting.
        
    I think EC's okay, but he's certainly not deserving of all the Grammys.
    But, that's par for the Grammy course.  The awards are a pathetic joke,
    and I can't stand watching the show, since the awards annoy me so much.
    
    Look at the bands shut out, or nearly shut out: The Who, the Stones,
    Beatles, Clash.
    
    And, the big winners, industry giants and legends like Christopher
    Cross and Toto.
    
    It's not as bad as it used to be, but it's still pretty abysmal.  Rock
    and Roll is part of the youth culture, and having a bunch of geezers,
    foges and industry hacks voting on the best R&R, rap, etc. recordings
    is a joke.
    
    The awards should be voted on by critics.  It would give some
    legitimacy to the awards, and would give lesser-known but deserving
    groups some recognition.

Interesting note on NPR this morning.  Seems that only about one third of the 
awards are given out at the ceremony.  The others are givien out at like, 
2:30 in the afternoon, in a tent, outside the hall, attended by a few reporters.
The winner of things like "Best Liner Notes" stand in front of the reporters, 
and somebody asks "any questions".  When there is no response, the artists just
kinda slink off stage.

BTW - My wife, the worlds biggest fan of "Cindy movies", thinks EC is great, 
      and made me get her the "Unplugged" CD from MY club.  Figures

    Which performace, Mark?  Was she on lasted night?  Which song did she

    Clapper's overrated.  Tell me "Tears in Heaven" doesn't sound a lot
    like "Wonderful tonight".  It was for sentimental reasons.
    
    Arrested Development did deserve it.  Didn't see it, so I can't really
    comment on other categories.  Who won for best female recording?
    
    Remember Terrence Trent Darby?  Starland Vocal Band? Milli Vanilli?...

There isn't anyone in the music industry that hasn't benefitted 
(sp) from other work. NOBODY.
EC has always been one of the most gracious and least self 
serving performers in the industry. His musical style has changed 
dozen of times as during his career as he wandered around trying 
out new stuff. Aside from the Marley line (hope I didn't stop you 
cold there), show me.

Bell Bottom Blues, Motherless Children, Let it Rain, Let it Grow, 
Layla, Same old Blues, Tangled in love, Badge.

It certainly beats the hell out of lousy covers of "Cats in the 
Cradle" and "Smokin' in the Boys Room".

    Grammy's and sure, he won mostly be sentimentality, but the man is a
    damn good artist.
    
    I still git the chills from much of his earlier work with Mayall,
    Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, Blind Faith, Delaney and Bonny, etc.

    I don't think it's that radical a departure.  EC's been all over the 
    map.  In fact, he's been so varied that I don't believe there are many
    critics who have liked *anything* he's done (at the time) since about 
    1971, but the whole picture isn't nearly so bad.  At least I don't 
    think he's sunk to the level of, say, a Paul McCartney.  By Grammy 
    pop standards, I can live with "Tears in Heaven".  Matter of fact, 
    if you look at the way past awards have gone, if it had been anyone
    else, even some clown like Michael Bolton, that had done the song, they
    would have won, too.  "Lifetime achievement" has passed many great and
    deserving artists over, sentimentality or no; the fact is that the song
    was immensely popular and that's one of the objective criteria to
    winning a Grammy...

Here again, my premise, which I've voiced many times, is that you can't
compare EC and EVH, because it's like comparing apples and oranges.

You might as well try to compare Robert Johnson's guitar playing with
EVH.

I like EC, and I like EVH, and I like Stevie Ray Vaughan, even though he
only used a pentatonic minor something-or-other 8^)

It all boils down to who and what ya like.....


That being said, I feel the Grammies are a sham.  It's kind of like some
"awards" I've seen here at DEC, where the people with the image win them,
while the real people, the grunts who did the work, labor in anonymity
behind the scenes.

I guess, like Andre Agassi says, "Image is EVerything"

movies he's been doing lately. I saw Boomerang the other night...peee yewww.

    Nah, it's really not classified as a "greatest hits" album.  More like
    a "Live" album.  Greatest hits would be taking the original recordings,
    and flinging them together on the same disc wif maybe, one new song to
    bleed 15 bux out of the paying public.  "Unplugged" is all new
    versions, done acoustically.  FWIW, I think the "Unplugged" version of
    "Layla" sucks almost as hard as the Mets.

	that tape gets bouqoue playing time when we take a trip in my van.

When I used to play back in college, Jackson Browne's  "The Loadout/Stay"
was really popular, especially the Loadout part.

All we wanted to do was play.  We'd sit in practice rooms for hours just
jammin', searchin' for that one perfect lick, that one chorus where we
were all into it on the same wavelength....  We never wanted to stop
playing.  The Loadout kind of told about that -- especially the part about
putting everything away before coming for the piano.....


I can dig Bill Long's kind of music.  There's only a few country artists
I really abhor, and most of them are not bad to listen to at all.
And ol' Travis Tritt is quite the rocker these days, considering the
Skynyrd special and all....

	You KNOW that photo had to be touched up.  The original
	picture was Marky Mark Lufay standing there in baseball
	cap and Fruit-of-the-Loom briefs, pointing to the PC,

I was thinking about this guitar question last night when I got home,
and how it relates to my theory that you can't compare musicians of
different periods against each other.

For example, you can't look at Bach and Mozart and say that one was better
than the other.  They came from different musical periods (widely different
if you examine them closely) and the criteria for greatness in each 
is just as different.

Further, in a lot of ways, Bach influenced Mozart, just as Mozart influenced
Beethoven, who pushed the envelope enough for Brahms and Wagner to do 
their thing.

Trying to compare Bach against Mozart is really trying to compare Baroque
music to Classical music, and that really can't be done -- other than
personal preferences.   There are commonalities of course, like the 
amount of emotional passion a piece from any period can evoke.


Further, with guitar players I think it's similar.  If you ask Clapton
who influenced him, he'll give you a list of guys.  If you ask Eddie
Van Halen, he'll say Clapton and Hendrix, among others (IF memory serves
me correctly).   

We're all given a little time period to do our thing.  For the classical
guys Bach, Mozart et al, that time period seemed to be 100-150 years
a piece (longer I think because of the technological levels available
at the time -- ie no recording etc etc etc).   The guitarists today
have about a generation.  

So comparing guitarists from one generation to the next is damn near
impossible.  To me, it's like trying to say that the 1960s Green Bay
Packers were better/worse than the 1980s SF 49ers.  You just can't do it
cause the game is so different.



Just some of my opinions.  Probably would make a good paper to write if
I dug out all my old Music History books and stuff like that, but who
has the time, eh?

FWIW, I looked at the liner notes on Unplugged last night to see 
how many of these were covers of his earlier stuff.

From memory, I'd say about 1/3 of em. They're NOT greatest hits 
by any stretch.

I read somewhere that Duanne Allman (who co-wrote and played on 
Layla) stated that the Unplugged version was actually the 
"original" version and that the Derek and the Dominoes version 
came about after some tinkering in the studio.

I've seen quite a few people state that they really dislike the 
Unplugged version. I believe that because most people compare it 
to the Dominoes version. I think it's an unfair comparison. To be 
fair, there isn't much out there that wouldn't pale when compared to Layla.

On it's own merits, the Unplugged version is a fine piece of 
work.

    Little Richard got ripped off by cover artists in the 50's.
    
    It can be argued that Robert Palmer did the same in the 80's
    (Didn't mean to turn you on, Mercy Mercy Me...)
    
    It can be argued that Michael Bolton's doing the same now,
    although he does seem to be giving some people some credit.
    
    The big question I have is:
    
    Did the Banana Splits *REALLY* rip off Bob Marley?
    Beagle, Fleegle, Drooper and Snork....
    

Cmon now Daryll, way back you're really reaching to say there's nothing new 
being done. Sure everything evolves from something before it but the fact
of the matter is that many artist are able to take said  styles and add a
few things from another style and redefine it as their own. Clapton has never
done this. He's stolen from everybody he's ever played with and as far as
putting some emotion or feeling into a song, well Arrested Development put
more in their first album for me to think about and styles that EC has in
a lifetime of work. Technically the guy's flawless but as an inovator, and
a songwriter he sucks.....

      Comparing EVH to EC is a joke.  Both are great in their own style.  I
    have music from both and enjoy both at different times/moods....
    
      The music awards, just like any other type of awards are a joke for
    the most part.  I know what I like,  I don't need other people telling
    me what/whos better than others.

length of his career, I'm sure you could provide a couple of 
examples? I commend you on picking up that EC is a self-serving,

    Sure you can!  While Bach *made* the Baroque period, and was a
    world-class organist/composer, his music sounds real dry to me. 
    Especially the fugues.  After a while they become a cacophony of noise
    to me with no musical direction or sensibility.
    
    On the other hand, Mozart was a musical prodigy that hasn't been
    duplicated for centuries.  His music was very passionate and extremely 
    melodic, as well as technically (theory) brilliant!  I could listen the
    Symphony No. 40, Movement 1 all day long!

    No argument there.  All of them Bach and Mozart also were greatly 
    influenced by their contemporaries as well as their predecessors.  Bach
    and Mozart were really impressed with Handel.  Mozart admired Haydn's
    work.

    I just heard on the radio that there was an explosion underneath
    the world trade Center in NYC (the subway station)..Hundreds have been
    injured as the buildings were damaged and they say there is a fire
    in both buildings.  Rumor of two people dead and there are many people
    trapped in the upper floors.  A disaster of unbelievable proportions.
