456.0. "Hudson Hawk" by 65320::RIVERS (Stupid, STUPID rat creatures!) Mon Feb 07 1994 14:19

It was my weekend for watching movies that I liked, but nobody else,
    especially the critics, did.

The first was the (apparantly) collossal flop, Hudson Hawk. It stars,
among other folks, Bruce Willis as Hudson Hawk, cat burgular par
excellance. Hudson is released from prison after 10 years behind bars,
and is immediately approached by his parole officer to steal a statue
from an auction house (this before Hudson has even left the prison).
Hudson declines -- he wants to go straight. After all, he's just spent
10 years of his life in jail and hasn't even had a good cup of
    cappucino yet.

Plot twists being what they are, Hudson is coerced into the job by some
Mafioso types (Frank Stallone, Sly's bro, being one of them). He and
his partner in crime, Danny Aiello, steal the piece, a priceless work
by Leonardo DaVinci, only to find out that it's apparantly "back" the
following day. Curious as to what's going on, Hudson attends the
auction, meets the lovely (yet typically wooden) Andie MacDowell, an
art expert, and the main villians of the film, Darwin and Minerva
Mayflower (Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhardt). Hudson flirts with
Ms. MacDowell, the auction house gets blow up and Hudson finds himself
the unwilling (and confused) pawn of the Mayflowers and possibly the
CIA (headed by a making-in-fun-of-himself James Coburn and the
notorious Candy Bar gang, including my favorite character in the film,
Kit Kat, played by NYPD Blue star David Caruso).

The rest of the movie consists of a lot of over the top action
sequences, good natured verbal warfare between Aiello and Willis, lots
of shots of Rome, weird scene seques, Hudson's continuing endeavors to
get a cup of capuccino and obviously implausible happenings. It's good
natured, "don't take it seriously or your head will hurt" stuff. But
clearly not for all people. Coming on the heels of the massively popular
Die Hard, I think perhaps Hudson Hawk suffered from being offered up as
something it wasn't -- people went expecing Die Hawk and got a quirky
    action-comedy instead.

But once I figured out it was supposed to be silly, I liked it. It
does have its flaws--sometimes the comedy is just dumb rather than
silly, and it's a bit too long. No sex, though, a few bad words, and
not particularly graphic violence (some blood, a bouncing head).

I'd recommend it, but only if you're in the mood.

    	Bunny ... ball ball!!

One of my favorites ... but then again, I like this sort of
stuff. Comedic action movies, I guess they could be called.

I saw this with a friend of mine who was kinda expecting Die Hawk (love
that :^}) and well - it was my turn to compromise so we rented this
    one.

I ended up really liking it - for what it was.....I cringed a few times
when Bruce broke out into song but I loved the new twist on "Lets
syncronize our watches' by singing songs :^))))))

It was definitly a comedy/adventure so I wouldn't put it in teh same
genre as Die Hard, which I guess that was its problem - being compared
    to DH.

....his quest for a great cup of capaccuino was a nice way to lighten
the mood and give Bruce a chance to do what he does best - quick
    repartee and cute one-liners.

Jimbo, remember listening to these songs on the way up to Ottawa? Great
stuff!!! I also agree with the previous notes - once I realized how
(intentionally) stupid the movie was, I loved it!

Don't laugh the first bruno album went GOLD!. I just heard this on MTV

What made this movie for me were the villains.

The candy bar gang, and Richard E. Grant were absolutely brilliant!!

Dunno about dat dolphin scene, tho...

(Mr Grant also shines in the unclassifyable 'Whitnail & I')

( Mod - feel free to start a new topic, if you like )

*very* minor spoiler for _How to Get Ahead in Advertising_

    	Man in advertising
    	Man get boil on shoulder
Boil grows at an alarming rate
    	Boil takes over Man

    Slightly larger spoiler ---

The most amusing part in the film, I thought was that the ad execs
were marketing a boil cream, but were disappointed in sales, so they
hype up a female singer, made her extremely popular even though she had
boils on her face, which made boils very popular. Until, the singer's
complexion cleared up, and which point sales for their boil cream
    soared... Whadda concept! :-)

Back to Hudson Hawk....I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw
this and liked it....I thot it was stupid and hysterical in parts
and I saw this at the theatre over 2 yrs ago! I think I'll rent
it just to refresh my memory. I've always liked Bruce Willis and
I really think Striking Distance was the bomb. Saw that and was
    very dissappointed.

Read the good reviews in here. Like most Bruce Willis movies. Like
    Danny Aiello.

.... but, unfortunately, this ranks as one of the stupidest of all
time. I mean real bad. Like "The 3 Amigos" or "The January Man"
    kind of bad.

I take back what I said 456.16 about Striking Distance....I rented
it (also saw it in the movies) and liked it better on small screen
I didn't like Sara Jessica Parker I loved Bruce Willis..as always....
it was better the second time around...

Does that ever happen to YOU? go to the movies..dislike what you saw
...rent it a while later out of desperation and end up liking it?
    no..i didn't think so.
456.2065320::RIVERSStupid, STUPID rat creatures!Tue Apr 05 1994 19:595
Yes. With Disorganized Crime, which I saw in the theatres, founda bit
weak (although I didn't dislike it). However, on repeated viewing on
tape at home, I rather like it. :)

I happen to be home sick yesterday and caught this movie again.

I do not know, maybe it was lack of sleep but it had me literally
falling off my chair. Later last night it was on again (Movie
Channel both times) and I still laughed. A lot of swearing but
for some reason I cut through and found the lines between Hudson
    and Tommie to very funny.

The first time I saw this I did not take it seriously and I still do
not but I almost taped. Oh well....
