1138.0. "Time for a Moderator Change Prehaps?" by MARVEL::DAVIDC (In Valen's name.) Thu Jul 25 1996 10:19

I vote that J.Michaud is replaced as as moderater - he clearly is
abusing his so called autority as Moderator. Basically if he doesn't
like the note - he deletes it. That is not what a notes conference is
for. Its for voicing an individual opinion. It should not be deleted
just because a moderator does not like it.

Does anybody else have the same feelings as myself about this??

I think your right on the money Chris. Lots of my notes get deleted
as did the topic re dicussing policy which was 1137 yesterday and now
appears to be gone. This feels more like a jeff Michaud conference
    rather than a public forum.

I agree with the sentiment, but replacing the moderator is a drastic step. Lets
not get personal about this.

I thinks its time that a clear "policy statement" be set out saying what we can
and can't note on. If one already exists, then I apologise for bringing it up
again, but a pointer to it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Simes %^)

Jeff, it probably wasn't a great idea to delete the "conference
policy discussion" note ... notes like that are good for a conf-
erence so that the readers can have a better idea of what is
and what isn't acceptable, and also a place to verify same so
that others can get a better idea at the same time.

I don't agree that you should be replaced as moderator, but I
do think you need to lighten up a bit. 8^)

I thought I was the only one who got all of his small tidbits of info
or personal views deleted! He should lighten up! Consider this as
more constructive critisism. It's better than being booted eh?

Before Jeff Michaud was moderator, this file was out of control.
He has brought order and structure to this file.
I vote to keep Jeff Michaud as ::movies moderator.

I don't mind Jeff as moderator as long as the atmosphere is lightened
up. This is supposed to be a leisure conference where we can discuss
things. I don't like getting a mail with a list of every note I've
ever posted for the last 6 years. That is not part of what a moderator
    should be doing.

Don't get me wrong about this - its not that I WANT JM to be replaced,
but I do agree with Chris Plant on this. Some of what Jeff does is not,
to my mind, moderator type behaviour.

I remember this conf and the orginal MOVIES conf. before, and yes it is
managed much better in comparison. But the deletions of replies and
whole notes along with the mails listing every single note and reply
that a person has ever written during his time with Digital, and
sometimes deletions with no mails what so ever, is not good moderator
    practice.

I have a problem with almost all mods. But yes I think the mod of this
conference is way out of control. I move for impeachment.

I don't want Jeff replaced, but I'll tell you... When I get a note
deleted, I always hope there's a good reason for it :^)

Jeff gave a detailed, documented, well-thought-out reason for deleting
a sarcastic note I wrote, but I still disagreed with its deletion...
ie. I though it was a note with valuable content.

However I respect the time he took to answer my complaint. Believe
me, there are a slew of mods who wouldn't.

Moderating a notes file is a hard and thankless job. You're
like a referee, only noticed when you do something somebody doesn't
    like. So I empathize.

Perhaps, though, the suggestions to "lighten up" could at least be
    considered? :^)

I suppose someone should say it - I have neither had any problems with
the moderating of this conference or witnessed anything that would
    suggest it.

I have been able to say what I've wanted to say, how I've wanted to say
it regarding what I feel about films. For that I am grateful.

Movie reviews can get pretty heated, so far the light has been allowed
where the heat is requested to be kept at a minimum. If I wanted
personal arguments and heat getting in the way of good honest reviews,
    I'd visit Soapbox.

I'm happy with this forum in its current state. The current moderator
gets credit for this I feel, and my thanks.

    Just one guy's opinion...

Conferences with no restrictions lead to LDUCs. The complaining about those
LDUCs alone is often as bad as the argument itself. That's not really needed
here.

On the other hand as someone said earlier the previous Movies notes file was
so restrictive that you couldn't even explain a point in your review without
getting your knuckles slapped.

I think I've only had one note deleted and on reflection it was the right
move. The topic had gotten out of hand.

One final thought, consider how much we pay him to do this thankless job
and tell me with a straight face that you are not getting what you pay for.

I vote to keep the moderator,
  George

all sentiments seem fine and above board. Its the other non-moderator
things that seem to be happening that P me off.
I moderate other conferences and there is no need for some of the
actions I have witnessed. That being said. Lets carry on and
have fun discussing the movies we love to watch ( or hate ).
    But lets keep it fun.

I like this "I vote to keep/remove the moderator" stuff.
You have no vote. This isn't a democracy. The conference
exists at the whim of the moderators in the first place.

    Instead, you can say:

"Oh yeah! I'll start my own movie conference."

    Or perhaps:

"I'll show you! I'll hold my breath and stamp my feet
             till moderator X steps down!"

    That'll show em! Ha.

Let me also put my vote in for leaving the Moderator alone. I get
a gut-full of rat-holing, out of control, abusive noting out on
the Usenet. It's refreshing to come back to NOTES and find people
generally behaving sensibly. If Jeff has had to zap occurences
of noters doing otherwise, keeping me from ever seeing them, then
    he deserves applause.

1138.20Word from Your Moderatorchayna.zko.dec.com::xanadu::eppesNina EppesFri Jul 26 1996 20:1832
Excuse me, but this conference has THREE moderators: Nina Eppes (who
also is the conference host), Dave Wiegleb, and Jeff Michaud (use the
"show moderators" command in your Notes client to see e-mail addresses).
Jeff seems to have been more active recently, however. :-)

Neil is perfectly right in .18. Notes files are not democracies; they exist
entirely at the whim of the conference host (who usually, though not always
[okay, Shawn? :-) ], is a moderator).

If you have a concern about a particular moderator action, please send
mail to the moderator in question (or to all the moderators) rather than
bring it up in the conference. If you have a problem with another noter's
notes, please try to resolve it with that person privately, then involve
the moderators if necessary. We'd prefer to settle issues privately
when possible, not because we are trying to stifle free speech but because
generally those things aren't anyone's business except that of the individual
noter(s) involved and the moderator(s).

If we have been practicing "stealth moderating" sometimes, we apologize and
will try to be more open about our actions.

Anyone is welcome to start their own conference if they are not happy with
the way this one is being handled.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

This topic is write-locked. If that seems heavy-handed, so be it. :-)

-- Nina, host and co-moderator of MOVIES
