they would be prepared to lend to me for the weekend of 20th September ?

If so, please send mail to ESBS01::RUTTER

    Re. .408.409

Tripods do have the same fitting a still camera, but I would recommend
a much larger more robust model. Camcorders using the VHS or VHS 'C'
tend to be heavier unless you manage to borrow one of the newer 8mm
    types.

This is as good a place as any.

Has anyone actually driven up to AYR ? How far is it and
what route is recommended ? How long does it take if one
is strictly adhering to speed limits et cetera ?

I could probably estimate this for myself but my atlas is in
the car and I can't be bothered to go and get it. Besides
I thought the response would be quicker here.

    Cheers,

Autoroute gives the following for Reading to Ayr:

Route 1 : 486 miles 7 hrs 1 min Quickest
Route 2 : 403 miles 7 hrs 26 min
Route 3 : 401 miles 9 hrs 7 min Shortest
Route 4 : 417 miles 11 hrs Cheapest

Doesn't look like Autoroute knows about the M40.

Last time I tried Autoroute it couldn't find the way from Tavistock to
Exeter. About 2 roads and 30 miles. Also Grantham was missing from the
earlier versions. It is not sure if the reason was a political dig
(birthplace of Mrs. Thatcher). But seeing as how the authors were
recent Oxford graduates this is unlikely.

    Hi all,

I have a Spitfire 1500 (British Racing Green) and would like to get
hold of a hard top for it. I dont mind whether the top is not coloured
(ie primered) so that I can spray it myself.

I have inquired at my suppliers and they all cost about 200 (too
    expensive).

I have also asked at Spit Bits and they have some second hand ones that
I may be interested in (cos they're cheaper).

I just thought it was a good idea to put a note in here as well just in
case anyone has one they want to sell.

Does anyone live near the Fleet area and drive to DECpark each day ?
If so would that kind sole be prepared to pick me up from Fleet
railway station and deposit me somewhere in the DECpark car park ?
Would you be able to take me back to Fleet after work ?

Around 8:30 ish Tuesday AM (tomorrow) would be ideal.

My situation is this. I have to take my car to an Alfa specialist
based in Fleet. The work he is doing on the car means that it will
be there all day. I can't really stick around hence my request.

Hello, I have an old vintage Bentley parts car, That I am now trying to rebuild
it is a 1925 3-litre long chasis but now with speed model engine. I am in need
of some spare parts; Tachometer, fuel/petrol gage, oil pressure gage, windscreen
misc bolts screws nuts, (of correct thead sizes). Especially need valves and
guides. engine gasket set.

I have contacted a couple of dealers in England but prices are very high. I
thought someone might now of some used part sources. I have also written to
the Bentley Drivers Club and recieved the expensive dealers list. This may be
my only option but thought I would give this notes file a try. I only read this

Halfords don't do one. The emergency ones don't stop fuel sloshing out
    on left-handers.

The estate has a vented cap. The saloon (trust me to end up in a
saloon...) has an airtight one. I take lefts a lot easier than rights
but I still end up with a streak of expensive perfume down the side of
the car. And I'm fed up with half-filling the tank...

I'm mainly interested in some sort of gadget that'll measure fuel flow

them, but I've not seen any in shops.

Also : I'm after the sticky plastic stuff that a number of decals are
made of that are stuck on cars. ie the black plastic stuff that's
often stuck on door pillars around the windows these days. It's very
much like Fablon/Blue Peter sticky backed plastic, but I'd imagine the
adhesive is different. In my experience Fablon goes all tacky after a
few years, especially when warm. I want to cut my own decals you

Although Haynes don't do a manual that covers your exact model, they do a
Peugot 405 manual, and a Peugot diesel engines manual. Between the two you
should be covered. (although it's twice the price then!)

.506 reminded me of an article in the paper last saturday.

Seems the latest in casual car crime is to nick the spare wheel from cars
which stow them in a 'basket' below the car. e.g Pug 205

One ex-BT employee has used his redundancy money to design and market a lock
for these type of carriers after he had first-hand experience of the crime
(ever helpful Daily Torygraph didn't publish any details about how you contact
him for this !!!).

Other suggestions were cycle padlocks.

To be honest, with a car like that I think you're gonna get what you
pay for. I was going to suggest you're best bet might be a Nissan
Dealer but personal experience (I have a 300zx) and a episode of Top
Gear precludes me from saying so.

Best advise would be to check the adverts at the back of the likes of
Autocar. I have seen G & H plates - average mileage for age, for
resonable prices, can't remember off hand - don't have Autocar to hand.

Good luck with your search though - it's fine car - I like mine.

Word of warning on roof bars.

If your car has no roof gutter, like my Renault 19, you may find (like
I did) that you have to buy a conversion kit to fit the bars to the
    roof sills.

Consequently, Halfords (Basingstoke) quoted 49.95 for the bars then
another 20.00 for the conversion kit.

It was therefore cheaper for me to go to Renault and buy their own
    brand at 55.00 a throw.

    Helpfully yours,
    Gav.
5.574Beware cheap imitations!FAILTE::BURNETTDI have a cunning plan!Wed Jul 13 1994 19:3210
I bought THULE bars which fit both of my estates. 505 and Tempra. I was
using a cheapo halfords rack which fitted over the 505 roof rails onto
the gutters, but after a few trips with the boat on the roof, the bars
now have a strange boat shaped dent in them.

The Thule ones weigh about three times as much and don't bend, so
beware cheapo racks if you're lugging anything heavy!

5.583Car with Tow-Hook?GRUMBL::keanehelloTue Oct 11 1994 18:0120
Hi,

Is there any kind person in Reading, Basingstoke or Newbury area, who has a
large car with a towing bracket, that they will lend, (hire?) me, for a
couple of hours during office hours.

The reason is that my son has just finished building a kit car. He has
legally driven it to the MOT station and had it mot'd, (it passed!). We now
have to take the car from Silchester to Reading to have it inspected for
serial numbers by the vehicle registration dept. in Minster Street. The
officials there, are insisting that the vehicle MUST be taken to them on a
trailer and not driven! There is a mobile examiner, but he covers the
whole of the south and it will be weeks before he can get to us!

WE have the use of a car trailer, but no prime mover!.

We have taken 11 months to build this kit, and this is the last hurdle to
be overcome, please can you help!

I'm sure this has been answered elsewhere (maybe in euro_motoring if it's still
around).

You can hire snow chains from the RAC and probably the AA, and maybe your
dealer. Shops such as Les Smiths & Halfords sell them. They are not terribly
expensive.

I agree with your point and wholeheartedly applaud your sense
of vision and correctness for pulling a man up about his diction whilst
he was merely entering a note in here with the misguided impression
someone will actually give him some help.

leaseplan and the price they quote if you just ring them and ask what
    they've got on offer.

If anyone who has a car that fits the bill and would like to possibly
make a small!! profit by buying it and selling it on then please mail
me here at Solent (Gary Jackson @SBP).

    Thanks folks.

and 3 months warranty came with the deal + an excellent price.

This was with Hertz (admin via Leasplan - and very efficient they were

Hmm, thats a bummer. I wish I'd queried this a few months ago as
I was going to buy an end of lease Hertz car but didn't in the end because I
    thought no warranty applied.

Wanted: Set of Wheel Covers for a Nova

I am looking for a set of Vauxhall wheel covers for a Nova (13" i
think) the sort I am interested in are a star shape (I have seen them
on an SR but I don't think they were the original covers as I have seen
them on lower models as well). The colour I am interested in is ideally
Silver although Black might be OK.

    Hi,

I would either like to buy or borrow (for up to 6 months) an engine
crane, preferably hydraulic (needs to be able to lift approx 1 ton)
to move an engine and gearbox from an MGB around my garage while it
is being rebuilt and fitted to the car

    Thanks

Most local Tool-Hire shops have what you are looking for. I hired one
to install an engine and gearbox in my Caterham. The crane was in
pieces which fit in the boot of a car. I found it was easy to use and
accurately position the engine , effortlessly.

It wasnt expensive to hire and the longer you have it the cheaper the
    daily rate.

Another useful "tool" are engine stands to bolt onto your engine when
it is out of the car.

    Hi.

Does anyone have a unwanted but otherwise usable ball joint splitter
suitable to dismantle a mini's front suspension ball joints?

The tool that I'm looking for is the one that is forked and splits the
joint by being driven between the the upright and radius arm by a
    hammer.

i.e. not the screw clamp version.

    All offers welcome. Cash Terms.

I have one in Leeds, well Harrogate. I don't have any plans to be down
south in the near future. Bikes mount upside down, which doesn't seem
    as secure as upright.

    Andrew

PS mine is Automaxi, there is nothing special about Omega bars, any
rack for bars would do the job. It's not like others where you need
    gutters/bolts or whatever to fit.

A40 from Oxford to Brecon. Well, actually I think you have to turn off
the A40 just outside Brecon as the A40 now bypasses the town, but
basically just follow the A40 all the way. It's a very nice drive, much
    better than hacking along motorways.
