2205.0. "The Moral Maze" by BAHTAT::EATON_N (Personal Name Removed to Save Costs) Fri Jan 14 1994 14:13

Yesterday, on the way home I saw a DHL van being driven by a real
psychopath. As we were sat at some traffic lights (me second at lights,
him third), he dived out of the queue to the left, turned down a filter
lane to the left, pulled a U-turn and then, since the lights had
changed against him, he simply shot the red light.

"Ah-hah!" I thought, "man in hurry". About five miles later I found
myself two cars behind him again. I then watched fascinated as he
overtook a car on a completely blind brow (even allowing for him being
a bit higher up there was no way he could see). Inevitably he forced an
oncoming car to brake quite hard.

I was then treated to a view of the back end of his van disappearing at
a tremendous rate. In a 30 limit. In a small village.

So. Dilemma. I was so amazed by this clown that my first instinct was
to take his number (which I did), and ring DHL (which I haven't yet).
What would you do team? Does a man like this deserve to be reported?
Would DHL do anything anyway? Should I bother?

    All opinions welcome.

I don't know whether DHL would do anything, but at a former company, a
sales manager got a call about the driving of one of his sales people.
A member of Joe Public had called in after seeing the NCR sticker in
the rear window to complain about being cut up on the motorway by one
    of their employees.

Car Fleet took it seriously - the sales manager didn't.

    Give it a try.

    Yes.

This probably depend upon who gets to hear of it. I've often heard that
a fax to either the MD or the Public Relations director is a good way to
start and the numbers are normally not too hard to get hold of.

Wot about the boys in blue ?

I've phoned them before now from the carphone, and they've tried to
intercept the offender (not with a great deal of success).

In fact, they phoned me back to ask if I could follow the car, but I'd
    already lost sight !!

After being overtaken in my village going past the primary school where
my wee lassies goes to school, the first thing I did after I camed down
enough to stop sayin f*****G B******D between every two words.. I
phoned the cops.... The first thing they asked me was, was there anyone
else with me to verify the situation.. Unfortunatly, this time I was on
my own, so the officer said all he could do is trace the car reg and go
and speak to him about the incident...

Lesson learnt..... get witnesses!!! Anyone elses reg number in the
vicinity who you think should have seen the event... then phone the
    cops!

Gross stupidity needs to jumped on hard....then maybe wee kids can come
out of school without getting killed by assholes trying to save five
    minutes on their journey time!!

Mind you there have been a few bozzos down this way with "digital"
related stickers in the back windows of their cars jumping traffic and
    shooting through red lights!

    Hi Nigel

    I see your busy again.

A friend and I once saw a motorcyclist doing wheelies in the High
Street and acting rather dangerously etc.

We reported him to the Police, and they someone else had also taken the
number and reported it. With two witnesses they can prosecute for
    whatever offence they see fit.

IMHO, I think they'll ignore it as a crank letter or just someone with
    an axe to grind.

*However* the neat thing is that, in a few weeks, some other
equally public spirited citizen might complain about another
incident by the same driver... maybe three or four letters and they'll
    pull the guy in.

I think you're doing the right thing BTW. Most of us would have
    apathy-ed out by now.

Also while I'm ranting on, I have changed my opinion of the 50 MPH
limits in Motorway Road Works since I saw that documentary about the
poor b*****ds who actually do the work (occasionally).

Imagine having to dig up a road with some nutter doing 85 MPH three
feet away from you ? I guess the limit is there for their benefit
along the same lines as having a 30 limit outside a school.

First of all, we've had this before - speed cannot kill!!! Otherwise,
where are all the dead Astronauts? Speed in the wrong place and/or place CAN
(but NOT necessarily) kill

Secondly, the stupidity of (any) speed limits in most cases, is that
they are not necessary most of the time: "workers" do not work on Road Works
24 hours a day, 7 days per week, for instance.

I am not without sympathy for speed limits in general, it is just the
application with which I disagree!

If we're in RatHole Mode, it's probably not the speed, but the sudden
    deceleration that kills...

Mind you, the idea of Speed Limits at certain times of day is quite
appealing... anyone know of any examples ?

My neighbour works for the Transport and Road Research Laboratory in
Crowthorne and she tells me (unofficially) that they have been reviewing
the effectiveness of the old style cones. They will be looking at
"continental" alternatives as well. Perhaps, the cone will disappear in
the future.... what will drunken students wear on their heads then?

Perhaps better placed in *seen in passing* but I have also seen this
at the approach to the M3 works at Winchester.

Presumably its to report cones that get knocked over. In the local
news recently they said they replace around 250 cones a week in that
    stretch of road alone.

Try the Death Valley roadworks on the M62; lots of cones, but lots of
concrete barriers too. Try overtaking an artic at {mumble} miles an
hour in a lane that's only just wider than a parking space with a
concrete wall 2 feet from your wing mirror :-)

Wasn't this cones hotline part of the
back-to-basic-citizens-charter-I'm-still-here stuff? As I recall if you
see the usual seventeen miles of cones with Fred and his mate leaning
on a shovel at mile nine, with nothing else going on the idea is that
you ring the cones hotline, and they either (a) rush out and put the
whole thing right, or (b) smile, and say "'Ere Mavis, I gotta nuvver
    one 'ere!" to their friend.

Yep that is what the cones hotline is for.
However try dialling it. You get to an answer phone and asked to
leave your name and number/adress and some no-name will get back to
    	you..........NOT!

I would certainly be in favour of timed limits, for example outside schools

8:00-9:30 etc.(20mph) all other times (40-50 mph)

Same for outside places like factories etc...

Maybe derestricted (no-speedlimit) between 1am-4am on motorways maybe ?

Well, it's been a while, and this is the outcome:

I got a letter from the PR guy saying that this wasn't what they'd
expect from their people, and he'd pass the letter on to the Leeds
manager, who would then get in touch with me. (S)he didn't, so I guess
I can draw my own conclusions about what DHL think of the public. I can
also draw my own conclusions about whether I'd be happy to have my
packages transported by people who drive like lunatics. You may wish to
raw your own conclusions too, and you are free to do so!

    Cheers
