George, you are one LITERATE person!
Related question: What's happened to the traffic level in here?
Nannini signs with Ferrari (apparently), a noter enters it, and
hardly any response. Has all the traffic gone over to CARS_UK?
The activity level in here seems to've dropped off the side of the
side of a table!

No. Report to 65 immediately and we'll deal with you there.

| Personally I didn't mind the NASCAR guys in this conf, it made it easy keeping
track of that series. As for F1, I tend to stick to CARS_UK since it seems to
have more indepth reports and gets this info first. I tend to use RACERS for
US based racing organizations and such.
If we get rid of NASCAR and F1 goes to CARS_UK, what have we left?? I might
as well read SportsCar and On Track......

| Well I think that the NASCAR folks have enough traffic to warrent a
conference of their own. I don't know if the motivation was that they were
dominating RACERS and some people didn't want so much NASCAR traffic or
that the F1 folks don't care for the NASCAR stuff and went to CARS_UK
(which I don't follow) and getting the NASCAR traffic down is a way to get
the F1 folks back into RACERS. Personally I don't car what conference they
all are in. I will continue to read RACERS and NASCAR. I have noticed a
considerable decrease in F1, CART, etc. since the increase in NASCAR
traffic.

| Interesting. I've been moderator of this conference, either solely or
in partnership with one or more other members, for about five years
now. I went to European DECUS three weeks ago, and on my return I was
surprised to find the conference has a new home and major surgery. The
demise of the old host system was unexpected, and such things will
happen. Dave Lyons had mentioned in passing to me the week previous
to my departure that he planned to clean out some old entries, but I
didn't realize the extent of the pruning that would result. Those
things happen sometimes, I don't think the intent was to make anyone
feel unwelcome, at least I certainly hope it wasn't - if it was it is
not consistent with my own attitudes and I will join (or perhaps lead)
the exodus.
I think there are a couple of things involved. One is the style used
by various conference moderators. I myself tend to prefer to be
inactive and to explore consensus before taking action, while others
tend to be more active and/or more inclined to follow their own sense
of rightness. I wouldn't say either style is right or wrong, they are
just different. The most important thing is how the style of the
moderator sets the style of the conference, and how that interacts with
the membership. If the membership participation does not constitute
sufficient activity to maintain critical mass, the conference will die.
This to me is the strongest argument for seeking consensus within the
conference membership, before taking moderator action. On the other
hand, the host system particularly has a strong argument for exerting
control based on factors unrelated to membership consensus, since they
provide the resources used by the conference. Things like conserving
disk storage may have priorities to the host system that differ from
those of the membership. I guess what I'm saying is, please don't be
too quick to judge actions taken by the conference moderator, and don't
think that all of the moderators have the same feelings about any
particular action or issue.
For myself, I would hope that this conference can retain sufficient
interest and activity to remain viable. I don't have time to follow
lots of conferences, so I'm more likely to stay in RACERS for NASCAR
and F1 and IMSA and local SCCA topics than to chase each topic across a
seperate conference. My belief was that RACERS started out as a home
for folks interested in racing, without regard to style or role. As
far as I'm concerned, that's still the case.

liked the broad info in this conference and enjoyed reading some of the
F1 and other types of racing that I'm not familiar with. I hope to
input in both NASCAR and RACERS! NASCAR for sure, since that is more my
style.

| I don't have a dented helmut but there are those that would say my head
has been dented. Can I stay???? Seriously, I will probably remain a
read-only member of RACERS since I do not have any "carnival" knowledge
of F! and what it takes to climb Mt. Everest in a sports car. I can't
afford to race a car myself. For that I guess I must apologize and
tear the good guy badge off of my chest.
I will contribute to Nascar since I feel wanted there. It's a tough
ole world out there but if there were no spectators, there would be no
racing...or at least no reason for it.
Since Mr. Lyons has made his opinion of NASCAR racing well publicized
in this file, I do not want to burden him further with the details of
that racing. See all you REAL fans in NASCAR.
Have a nice day!

| I am not much of a NASCAR fan BUT the notes put in by some of the NASCAR
people can be more interesting than watching some of the races. I
don't always have time to read one notes file not to mention 3. I will
have to be a at least A Part-time Read Only Member (APROM?) of NASCAR.
Racing is racing is racing... I may not be the fan of one type of
racing that I am of another but that doesn't mean I will look the
other way. A well prepared race car (or boat or ...) is nice to see
just as a good driver is fun to watch. I believe that to the point
that yesterday when I had to go to Martinsville I made a point of
driving by the track to see if there were any cars visible on my way
to work.

Have all you F1 watchers gone off to CARS_UK. Oddly enough I don't go
in there - there's almost too much F1 chat, I can rap with Brit F1 friends
as much as I want without spending my life in that conference. It's
more interesting exchanging notes with you guys from a somewhat
different racing culture. Also the rate of notes traffic is quite
comfortable as far as time spent goes. I even enjoy the NASCAR guys
bitching at each other!
So where's the best place now for F1?

| I still read and participate in both UK_CARS and RACERS. Sometimes UK_CARS seem
to have some more indepth reports and there does seem to be some duplication,
but there seems to be more F1 contributors in the UK_CARS conf.

| re .18
Dave, do you reckon there's a need for long race reports in the
conference (like Colin Dawson's ones)? I usually assume that everyone's
seen the race or the highlights on TV and eventually gets to read all
about it in the mags or papers. I only read the long reports when they are
the "I was there" type (I'm biased because that's the only type that I
put in!).
PS as soon as I get the dup set done!

| Nigel,
I read the long reports avidly, and I love to monitor the British view
of Formula 1. What I noticed though is the lack of Ferrari fans, being
one myself, I am somewhat afraid to participate fearing a barrage of
taunts from all the Williams, McLaren, and Lotus fans. Do you know
of any Notesfile that has a niche for Ferrari Fans?

| No, I don't mind the race reports, except that I may have to skip to the next
note if I've already read it in VNS or Colin's own mailing. Personally I've
dropped AutoWeek and On Track so the TV and notes are how I keep up the F1
scene right now.
If I *HAD* to choose between UK_CARS and RACERS I think I know which one I would
go with, but I can be in both so that's just fine.
Dave

| Whats wrong with being a Ferrari fan. May I extend the welcome of CARS_UK
fans to the Tifosi. Even the most die-hard partisan Brit must admit Ferrari
at various stages have had what it takes. Some of our best drivers have
thought so including:
Stirling Moss
Graham Hill
Nigel Mansell
Lotus are on a downer
Mclaren are universally resented for being so consistently sucessful
Nearly all teams including Ferrari have such a strong British component
in them it would stupid to apply nationlism to it.
Ferrari ( Have lotsa work done in the U.K.)
Benetton ( Formerly Toleman U.K. based)
