127.0. "David Gans Grateful Dead Hour" by AD::VAUK (love will see you through) Mon Feb 18 1991 18:43

Since there has been some interest in the David Gans Grateful Dead Hour I
figured I would create a note that had the weekly show in it. Below
are the stations that are currently carrying the show. I am not sure
what show WBCN is on but last year they were a week behind.

    Happy Cheese-
    Jerry

Subject: Grateful Dead Hour # 149 - David Grisman!
Date: 22 Jul 91 00:14:01 GMT

This week's GD Hour features an interview of David Grisman by Phil Lesh
and Gary Lambert from their Bay Area radio show, Rex Radio. Jerry
Garcia joins in, too, for some funny reminiscences about the ol' days.
Grisman wrote up The Warlocks for Sing Out! magazine in '65, and other
great stories. Also: Grisman got the name "Dawg" while playing in Old
and In the Way - and Garcia's name in that group was "Spud"!

Caught the GD hour last night, something I rarely do. This weeks was the
second half of Greensboro 4/1/91.
Was it me or was that set REALLY OFF??? The Dark Star was one of the worst
I've ever heard. Playin reprise was a joke. Was the whole show this bad???

On a better note, caught the sneak peak at the new JBG live disk. Sounds
HOT HOT HOT!

After the GD HOur, my local station debuted the new Indigo Girls live CD.
Sounds real nice. No UJB tho...

After that the guy played some nice Bela Fleck and some Grishman and I won
tickets to a movie in town. All in all a night home by the stereo turned into
a great time!

It looks like WBCN is up to #145. Does anyone have the cue sheets for
shows missing from this note (#s 144-147, I think)? There's one coming
up that is very rare -- Gans mention in r.m.gdead that he thought he
was the first person to hear the tape since it was recorded in '69. He
called up the Dead Base folks and they stopped the presses to add the
    setlist.

BTW, could some kind mod add a good keyword to this note. I wasted
precious moments of my valuable time finding it. :^)

WBCN is actually up to #154, 155 will be on 9/23. #154-156 are all
from this summer's Giants' Stadium shows. Pretty mediocre, IMHO.

Howzabout a GD_HOUR keyword for those who don't know who or what a Gans
is?? :^) BTW, the keyword made it much easier to find this note and I
can now go back to exploring the promise of the "Do" key.

BTW2, the VCR recording came out fine. Hi-Fi VHS blows away cassettes
for sound quality and recording time. If only there were more radio
    shows worth recording.

Another show worth recording is Mountain Stage, on WBUR Sundays from 7
to 9. It's a live show (via tape) from West Virginia, and you never
know who they'll have on. Usually 3 or 4 acts in 2 hours, 2 sets per
act. I've discovered many great musicians in the year I've been
    listening to it.

    WBUR is in Boston, 90.9.

Also, check your local PBS stations (2 and 44) for the Lonesome Pine
Special and Austin City Limits. A recent Lonesome Pine had an hour of
Little Feat live. They're usually on Saturday nights around 11:00.

I do usually tape Blues After Hours, it's a fantastic show (and hosted
by DEC's own Mai Cramer). I've heard Mountain Stage a few times and
it's always good. I never seem to catch Austin City Limits or Lonesome
    Pine.

Blues After Hours is on 9-1 Fri. & Sat. on WGBH 89.7 Boston. During
Friday's(?) shows Mai plays the syndicated Blues Stage, hosted by Ruth
Brown (Atlantic Records has been called "the house that Ruth built").
I listen to hear her pronounce NPR (comes out NPR-ah).

So, how's the new Jerry CD? I've heard "Deal" on the radio a few
times, did it have hit potential?? I give it a 10; it's got a great
beat and you can sway to it.

JGB CD:

I think the Jerry CD is very nice, although, I must say that I have heard
some Jerry boots that I prefer for reasons of better music. If you're
into JGB, there are quite a few fine sounding boots floating around, 3-1-91
to name one.

Anyway, the CD is chock full of music; must be over 2 hrs worth. There is a
18:00 (or so) Don't Let Go, Senior, Evangleline, The Way you do, etc, etc. Must
be a total of 16-20 songs. I paid $17.85, delivered to my office, which is
a pretty decent price. A must for JGB fans.

The mastering on the JGB CD is nice; The bass is enough to get any decent
pair of speakers really rockin'. If I had to rank the mastering of the most
recent live CDs to come from the Boyz & CO, I would rank 'em as: W/O a Net,
1FTV, and JGB. Comparing these live productions to other bands' live
productions, the stuff from the Boyz & CO sounds MUCH better.

127.30request for prog #45 info please....SOLVIT::BXOFRN::ROYthe sky was yellow, and the sun was blueTue Aug 18 1992 19:5534
Hi, a request if I may...........

Today I was listening to a tape that I have id'd as Gans program
#44. The material is from a Red Rocks show on Sept 7, 1985. In
the program, Gans comes on with snipets of what will be on next
weeks show. What I heard was what I think could be a killer
version of Dear Mr. Fantasy w/Brent.... So, I am assuming (I
know, don't ASS-U-ME), that the show mentioned is #45. What
I am looking for is a songlist and showdates for the material
that David had on show #45. The next step would be to find
	that whole show.

The tape that I have as #44 has the following songs on it. (In
case I have the program # wrong).

	Gans program #44

		from September 7, 1985....

			- logger song
			- shakedown st.
			- crazy fingers
			- sampson & delilah
			- goin down the road (delaney & bonnie & friends)
			- one more saturday night
			- johnny by good
			- it's all over now baby blue

So, if you think that you have Gans' program #45, could you
enter the show date(s) and the song list from it?

thanks much....Glenn (the second N is silent)

    Glenn,
Goin Down the Road WAS not part of that Red Rocks show...I was there...

The Dr Mr. Fantasy WAS done that run too and i think that day...
I have the set-lists and tapes at home...but someone
with a deadbase-dammit will prob answer yer question before i get
    a-round-tuit.

BTW...those shows were my second dead-run.....hooked fer life

a mish-mash of the entire run!

Randy.....yes, the way Gans does it, I am sure it is mixed....
I will have to listen again, he might have mentioned more than
one date. Also, I have a borrowed deadbase at home, and will
try to check it tonight. I haveta say though, hearing Brent
for that 1 or 2 seconds is enough to curl your hair.... that
    	must have been SOME show!!!!!!!!

    	thanks, GLenn....

YES? Just before I fell asleep last nite, I got up and checked
the deadbase, as I knew I'd forget this morning. Definately
there was a DMF on 5-7-85, right out of space. Of course, I
didn't write down the set list, but I can get it if you really
want... But, now what I have to find out is if the clip I heard
on the Gans tape is the same one.

UUUHHHHMMMM!!!!!!! Could Be!!!!!!! I'd have to listen to the
Gans thing again. Why this caught me was that I always loved
Brents singing, the soulfulness that he put into it.... So,
when I heard that clip, I gnu I wanted to get it. Kinda makes
up for the tape that I have where the first 5 - 10 seconds is
a Gans clip saying something like, "...and on tonights show
we'll hear .....(clips of songs here)....and in it I here
something that really intrigues me....well, wouldn't you know
it, but it ends...stops...and some other gans show starts up.
I don't know what the hell happened, but it appears that I
must have unknowingly taped over something, and every time
I listen to it I get mad at myself....So, someday maybe I
	will i.d. it....

So... anyone have the songlist for gans show #45? Also, I
will be at a friends house one night this week, and will be
able to check his collection for the 5/7 show. I have a
strong suspician that he might have it....I think that was
during the time that he was putting a lot of effort into
	taping.

Hey all you radio listeners, uh, tape enthusiasts out there, you wanna
get'cher tape decks spinnin' cause here it comes!

This 1974 stuff is _NOT_TO_BE_MISSED!!!!!

I most of this show on some too-fast-in-pitch bootleg records, and its
Phan-tastic! The Dead play very, very similar to the Oct. 74 Winterland
run. Actually, this show, and the 2 at the Palaise de Seine on 9/20,21
where the last played before the Winterland shows.

Just incredible versions of all the songs Gan's is playing on the GDH.
Sure would love to get the whole show! There's a GREAT Peggy-O.
Since Gan's is broadcasting this, I assume he has a clean DAT source?

Before doing a tree, you may want to wait until the next deadhead hour.
I haven't seen a schedule, but here in the bay area David did a 2 hour
show (he does it live here on KPFA), and this week he isn't doing a
show. The second hour contained more stuff from the same show (I
think... I didn't hear the date, but it was from '74)

Hope he does do the rest, there was some good stuff in the second hour.

Josh,
Well, I sat up late last night to try to tape this (yawn!) but it turned out

a cut from "Dick's Picks". I think it was GDH #271 (but they don't tell

Ah, now we have a reference point on what GDH WBCN is up to!
Thanks, Craig - its a dirty job but someone had to do it... ;-)

The Dijon GDH's are show nos. 273 and 274. So you would think that they
are being broadcast on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3, but in light of the last few
notes I'm not so sure. Also, I thought Eric Simon told me, before yesterday,
that the Dijon show would be on in 2 weeks - making it Dec. 20.

Note the the "Do not broadcast before December 13, 1993" line in the GDH
posting DOES NOT mean that it will be broadcast on Dec. 13!

I just called WBCN (617-266-1111) but there was no one in the music dept.
to answer this earth-shattering questions. Woman there told me to call back
around 2 so thats what I'll do.

I just called WBCN (at the listener line, 617-536-1111) and confirmed that
they are broadcasting GDH #273, part 1 of Dijon, on Monday 12-27-93
(at midnight, as usual).

Guy there did not have the sked for Jan. to confirm if part 2 (GDH 274)
is gonna be on 1-4-94 (as I would think it would).

This Monday, 12-20-93, is Richmond, 9-10-93.

Problem for me is, I'm gonna be in NYC on 12-27-93. So I'm gonna take my
tuner & deck down there... but first:

Phyllis, can you confirm that WNEW is broadcasting GDH #273 on 12-27-93?
Thanks! If they are one week ahead of WBCN then I'm screwed :=|

I just got through to WNEW-FM at their main #, 212-286-1027.

Guy there only was able to say that tonight's show is from Sept. of this
year. Which must be the Richmond show - so, thats GDH #272, and next week
should be Dijon.

Looks like I'm bringing my deck tuner, and home-made beam antenna to

Due to some software deadlines, I was up late last night and decicded to
tune into BCN for the GDH, which is supposedly on at midnight. But
instead got Howard Stern who wasn't as obnoxious as I heard he could be.
GHD did finally come on about 12:30 or so. Nice section with Ken Nordine
on. Would have taped it if I knew in advance (I usually keep those
GHD notices around, so it's not as if I DON'T know, just hadn't been
keeping up to date.)

You probably need to send it to BCN, as Gans doesn't have control over
it once it goes out the door, unless they do something really obnoxious
and cut it up and remove his id stamps. Gans mailid is
tnf@well.sf.ca.us just so you know.

This was on Monday, 12/20.
On Monday, 12/27, WNEW broadcast the SECOND part of of the Dijon stuff.
W t F*** happened to the first half of the Dijon stuff?
Unless the WNEW guy was completely out to lunch on 12/20 and they broadcast
the first part of Dijon on 12/20.
To make things worse, WNEW has the most compressed signal I've ever seen.
The level meters didn't budge a db during the whole set. And WNEW really
screws up the GDN show by cutting out Gan's intro to the music at the top
of the hour.

Anyone in NYC know what happened? I'm really pissed off.

What did dear ole WBCN do here on 12/27?

Most of us here on the BostonMusicNet seem to agree that 90.9 FM WBUR,
"Boston's NPR Station" is a good home for David Gans' syndicated
Grateful Dead Hour. In coordination with David, I have called WBUR
to put out preliminary feelers. I spoke with Music Director George
Preston, who suggested that the possibility did exist, and that he would
discuss it with his boss, Managing Director George Boosey. He
suggested that FAXes from fans of the show to Mr. Boosey would be a good
way to indicate the level of support that the GDH has among Boston NPR
listeners.

So, with the prior knowledge and approval of DGans, I am now calling for all
members to FAX WBUR's Managing Director George Boosey at 617-353-4747 with a
brief note expresing your support for NPR, WBUR and the GDH. I have included a
sample note below, but feel free to write whatever you care to. It is a
particularly strong message if you mention an actual dollar pledge in
conjunction with your support of the show, but of course this is entirely
optional.

If we want GDH commercial free in Boston, it's up to us to see that something
is done about it !

  ==> FAX today !  <==

Thanks for your support,

take care,

ejs

Re: Syndicated program The Grateful Dead Hour

Dear Sir:

This FAX is to voice my support for the syndicated radio program

The Grateful Dead Hour in the hopes that WBUR will pick up this show. The

GDH has a loyal following of listeners in Boston but finds itself without a

home after cancellation by WBCN. An informal survey of fans of the show

indicated that WBUR was our top choice for a new home.

We believe that the GDH would fit into your stations format well

as Deadheads tend to be NPR listeners (and vice-versa !). Please consider

this note to be a pledge of loyalty and financial support of your station

if you do decide to pick up the show.

Because I realize that WBUR relies on listener support to maintain

operations, I am willing to make a pledge of $20 contingent upon the

broadcast of my favorite syndicated show.

Thank you for your time and for your consideration of this matter,

yes you do, jeff; you can just go down to the fax room on the second floor by

or, you can do this, that just came on boston-music (and sounds really neat)

I just got a call from the program director at WXPN, and he's seriously
interested!

Fortunately, they're starting a fundraiser immedioately, so this coming
SUNDAY from 2 to 4pm they will air GDH 281 (hot off the presses) and also
#208, my sample program. There will be fundraising pitches. If they get
enough action on this, they'll pick up the program immediately.

So SPREAD THE WORD. Let's make this happen!!!!

WXPN is at 88.5 on your FM dial. Sunday from 2 to 4pm.

According to person I just spoke with at WZLX (who said she should
double check :-), the proposed time slot for GDH is 12-1 Saturday
night.

Sure beats the old 12-1 Monday night WBCN had it.

Let's see, there must be some business I know of whose proprietor is a
deadhead and would consider advertising.....

Well, where did all the netheads meet during the last couple fall
tours? CBC?!!

Maybe if enough patrons mention over the bar what a good idea it would
be....

If you can think of other businesses where you and your friends spend
your money, mention to the proprietor that he or she should consider
advertising for GDH on ZLX. Esp. when spending $$$$.

Cheers,

one Massachusetts station airing this program, and it's
in Provincetown. Does anybody know for sure where / if
one can pick it up in the Boston area?

wzlx pre-empted the GDHour and played "nonstop Aerosmith" on
Saturday night instead...I was bumming cause it was to be the
2nd half of the (HOT!) show he had broadcasted the week before.

I gave the dj a call and asked what was up there! and he told
me they had decided to make that programming change on Wed.
and to play the GDHour on Friday night instead. He said they
had been announcing the change all week long. Well, I don't
listen to the radio :-) so I never heard about the change and
tuning in on Saturday to find out it was broadcast the day before
did me NO good! He said that he was getting quite a few calls
about it - maybe they would re-broadcast the show next weekend.

anyone here by any chance hear it (tape it!) on Friday?

I think a few pointed Email messages to WZLX are in order. Hey, I
understand business, and wanting jump on the new Aersomith release
wagon. But this was just handled poorly. I didn't hear anything about
the rescheduling either, and in any event they should have moved the
re-broadcast to sometime AFTER, like Sunday night. That way you didn't
find out on Saturday that you missed it the night before.

    They'll be hearing from me.

no, not a fan. They play some unusual tunes once in a while, but

I can't stand Charles. I haven't really liked him since the Duane

	in the weird-but-true department:

I try to record the GDHour whenever I can - sometimes I keep 'em,
sometimes I just listen to 'em for a week and then record over
them the next week. Sometimes I stay up while the show's on,
sometime I hit the record button and go to bed.

this past weekend I did the record/go to bed deal. Listening
to the tape the next day, it had run out of tape and cut off in
the middle of Phil talking about this play he's going to be
	in with his son.

Phil did alot of talking about his kids' school, and how parent
meetings are started with songs, and how he wants to do a benefit
"singalong" with Deadheads next December. I read the transcript
of the interview, and the part that got cut off from my taping, he
was talking about the play starting with a Eurythmy piece.
I'm most positive that his kids attend a Waldorf school now! I'm
sure nobody knows about Eurythmy unless they have knowledge of
	Rudolf Steiner/Waldorf schools.

Anyhow, I had wanted Guntis to hear this - the Waldorf connection -
but my tape got cut off (and he doesn't read the 'net).

I was mentioning this at dinner last night (first time I've seen
him since the weekend - he's been farming with Bobby's childhood
friend this week ;-) ) - and he said that he had the radio on where
he was sleeping, woke up to the word Eurhythmy, which caught his
attention, and then realized it was Phil who was talking.

Do you think he heard my tape player click off just at that moment,
to wake him up miles and miles away?!? ;-0

Subject: Announcing the Grateful Dead Hour Mailing List

Announcing the creation of a new email list for information on and
discussion about the Grateful Dead Hour.

As you may know, the GD Hour is a nationally syndicated radio
program devoted to exploring the wide musical world of America's best-loved
band. Produced and hosted by David Gans, it began in its present form in
1987 and is currently heard on over 80 stations. The program presents
high-quality recordings of the band's live performances from analog and
digital master tapes provided by the Grateful Dead, as well as interviews
with band members, recordings by artists who influenced the Dead, other
people's performances of Dead music, and so on.

Subscribers to the mailing list will receive regular reports detailing the
content of upcoming broadcasts. In addition, they can post requests and
comments, connect with other tape collectors for copies of past programs,
discuss how to get additional stations to carry the GD Hour, etc.

Please note that the Radio Concerts Discussion list will continue to
receive the periodic listings of upcoming Grateful Dead Hour programs.

Also note that the Grateful Dead Hour Mailing List will not provide the
names or email addresses of its subscribers for any other purpose.

To subscribe, simply send email to:
gdh-request@lists.best.com
with the word subscribe as the body of the message. You will
receive back a confirmation message with instructions; read that
message and follow through; you then will be subscribed automatically.

The default for new subscriptions is "digest" mode -- the digest sends out
*one* message per day, complete with all the posts from that day only. The
"single-message" list will resend each email message as it arrives at the
server.

To subscribe to the single-message mailing list, send email to:
gdh-request@lists.best.com
with the word subsingle as the body of the message.

Enjoy the mailing list, stay tuned, and have fun!
