	well, as a NRPS show, it was excellent.
	but, the band seemed a little confused on the Jerry tribute part.

	still, a grate time, if not a little short.

477.16I felt like I was patronizing Jerry's memoryQUOIN::BELKINRIP Jerome J. GarciaTue Aug 29 1995 13:359
I thought some of the audience was a bit noisy & loud when Marmaduke was
trying to lay down his respect for Jerry. But then again, its da Bull, I
guess. The sound also was not good and it was distracting the band.

Parts of it seems a little sad to me - I mean, why would Marmaduke grab his
two bandmates and fly all the way from Marin to the Sittin' Bull to play
to a very small crowd? Would he have done that had Jerry not died?

Josh
477.17STOWOA::JOLLIMOREOneWhiteDuck/0^10=nothing at allTue Aug 29 1995 13:397
	Yeah, it was a bit loud in there. and the sound system was
	causing the band fits!

	NRPS is on the road. Ted made up the "Jerry Garcia Tribute show"
	part. I think it was a scam to fill the place on a moanday nite.
	It was just another show in another town to them (as it looked to
	me).
477.18ZENDIA::FERGUSONDry your eyes on the windTue Aug 29 1995 17:555
NRPS was ok.
I loved the old stuff.
Newer stuff, well.... i'd rather see Bluestime or even Pousette-Daht.
ie, there's been better "old bands" at the bull than NRPS
all in all, good time 'cuz there was lot of decheads!

    	I too was confused about the "Jerry Garcia Tribute" part. But, I
    like the way the guitarist did those pedal sounding steel licks on his

477.22old and in the wayWCCLUB::TERRITOWed Aug 30 1995 12:228
    I saw the Riders at the Bottom Line in NYC last week and they claimed
    they learned 3 dead songs for their Japanese shows,since those people
    never got to see the Dead.I have a hard time believe the Japanese have
    been waiting all these years for nrps,times must be slow. The early
    show was less than 1/2 full and after the show ,Rusty was selling tee
    shirts and tapes.In the old days when the riders played ny the shows
    were always great and always sold out at theaters not clubs.Times sure
    have changed
477.23DELNI::DSMITHand they keep on dancinWed Aug 30 1995 14:103

    I liked the hillbilly sound of NRPS but craved drums, bongos and
    bass...not to mention, a steel guitar would have been fantastic.
477.24QUOIN::BELKINRIP Jerome J. GarciaWed Aug 30 1995 16:057
yeah, that was me taping. haven't checked the sound on the tape yet but I
don't think it will be very good.

re -.1, I wouldn't say the current NRPS has a hillbilly sound, more like (as
they themselves said) "country rock"! :-)

 Josh
477.25Panama Red and Anchor SteamXANADU::KENMAN::matthewsThu Aug 31 1995 16:147
I had a great time myself, but I thought the show was more a nostalgic than
 musical triumph. There was no "bottom" and no "steel." Dawson seemed
really spaced out when I talked to him later. And the "Garcia" tribute
seemed thin too. The explanation that they were on the road anyway and
willing to go with Ted's billing makes sense. But hey -- the friendly
venue, great beer and burgers (anchor steam!) and hearing "Panama Red" made
for an enjoyable night.
477.26Question about NRPS set listXANADU::KENMAN::matthewsThu Aug 31 1995 16:308
Oh, and one question. What was the song Dawson said they couldn't do
because someone else is out touring with a new version and he didn't want
'em mad at him? I thought somehow he meant "Friend" but then they played
it. I asked him later and he said he didn't remember saying anything like
that.

For NRPS fans, he said they didn't play "MaryLou" cuz the band didn't know
it!  (4 chords???)
477.27STOWOA::JOLLIMOREOneWhiteDuck/0^10=nothing at allThu Aug 31 1995 16:404
	i remember dawson talking about a song they couldn't do, but i
	didn't catch the name. and yeah, dawson did look very spaced.
	looked like the road (among other things) had been taking it's
	toll.
477.28DELNI::DSMITHand they keep on dancinThu Aug 31 1995 16:454

    re- Toll taking

    Perhaps it was the Panama Rad?
477.29QUOIN::BELKINRIP Jerome J. GarciaThu Aug 31 1995 18:026
I don't remember the song Marmaduke was talkin' about but I do distinctly
rememeber him saying someing about "Nelson's band". That would be Dave Nelson,
ex-original NRPS member, and a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band
(the one that played Broadway in 87 and had the CD out).

Hmm, in a dark corner on the deck ... maybe GETTING spaced :-)

... so Dave Nelson is still playing out. The song in question then
probably was a JGAB tune. We'll never know what we missed. Thanks all for
the replies.

grotesqe name ... but do they play around here? :-)

    	I saw them a few years ago at the Old Vienna....They said they were
    practicing for when the dead stopped touring......They seem to be made
    up partly by New Riders folks....

I get the Old Vienna flyer every month & I'll watch for 'em. I'm going
down to get "100 Yr Hall" at lunch ... see if I can get any NRPS. I found
my vinyl "NRPS" and "Powerglide" this weekend ... sure would like to have
them around again. I don't think finding CD's of NRPS will be easy, but i
think M-duke said they were available.
477.37HELIX::CLARKWed Oct 04 1995 16:305
  NRPS is available; don't see Powerglide.

  When I looked NRPS up in Schwann, listed right before them is a group
  named New Potato Caboose. (?) They have an album, "Promising Traveler".

477.38NRPS at RockitXANADU::KENMAN::matthewsThu Oct 05 1995 01:536
Damn, PowerGlide isn't available? Well, I can haul out the turntable and copy it to tape.
rockit in Nashua had both NRPS and Best of, so I got NRPS. They also had a whole lot of
excellent used CDs at prices that had 'em leaping off the rack into my shopping cart ... and 100
Yr. Hall, too. And my 6-yr-old daughter is now into The Eagles (learning all the lyrics ... I
catch snatches of her singing "Witchy Woman" and "Tequila Sunrise" to herself), so I got Best of
and Hotel California in the used lot for her.
