    planning before)

well, when i look at note 403.3, all i see is deano's note. i can't find
mystery's "cow" note anywhere, other than in your reply

as for how deano is messing things up, and the weird date, i think i have a
clue. for a while now every time i did a dir i saw something at the bottom
by deano (which may very well have been labeled 403.3), even though at the
time there wasn't a note by that number. my guess is that however that got
into there, it probably happened on 16-mar (hence the date). this strange
listing at the end of the dir has now disappeared. but it would be kind of
odd for deano to post to the exact note and reply number that was previously
appearing as unusal...

i take this back. i just posted this, and then started doing "next unseen".
i get to 403.3, and there's mystery's note! i hit next unseen again, taking
me to 403.4. i got back to 403.3, mystery's note is gone, and there's deano's
note! something phishy's going on here...

There is something going on! I was next unseening away, and got to the
base note, then worked my way through all the replies, and when I hit next
unseen on the last reply (.10) it sent me to reply .3, weird.

If Highgate indeed happens it is very likely that camping will be available
onsite, or in designated areas w/in walking distance.

To continue in the spirit of hopeful thinking, I have a new (to me)
truck, and it and I would be ever so happy to give one or more people
a ride up to Vermont. It even has an official cap, as opposed to the
furring-strip-and-Luan "doghouse" on the old one, so I can offer
camping facilities to 1 or 2, as I'd probably be tenting. The old
one, sadly, fell shy of its goal of driving the mean distance to the
moon (238k miles) by a bare 19k; it did, however, get to turn up 200k
on a hot, dusty Ohio road in June, going to last year's Buckeye show.

So I'll top the previous best offer: I'll trade a DEChead V2.0 (your
choice of medium or large, but the medium has some sand stains from
diving after Mystery's volleyball spikes) *plus* my old pickup truck for
your Vermont Summer Ninety-Four extra ticket!

    paper in Mass.

Town officials in Swanton,Vt.,are a bit put out because they say
a Grateful Dead concert planned for a neighboring town this summer
could cost their community $28,000 in extra police and fire services.
The concert could attract 50,000 to 60,000 people, more than the
population of all of Franklin County, where Swanton and Highgate are
   Neighbors.
Highgate's recreation department will receive an undisclosed sum of

It was Hartford AND Hampton. At the Hartford show you had to go to western
Mass or Conn. to get a ticket.

I hope they play in Highgate but since that's their only stop around here
I think it's a bad idea but I'll be there if and when they do as long as I
am not on vacation. I dunno - Oxford worked out though (and there you didn't

Yea, Oxford was a wonderful time! One of my fave times.

From where I was sitting on the bleachers sort of as a base point both days
it went like this: Everyone waits until show time to try and get in.
X0000 people all try to get in at once. Some got pissed and came in under
the fence at one end of the field (some! I should say a steady stream
for both Feat sets.). I'm sure there were a lot of people taking advantage
as well (getting in for free).

But on the 2nd day I think, maybe both, they opened up the turnstiles
and let everyone in.

fun time!

can't see a 90's version of Wavy Gravy announcing breakfast in bed for
500,000 people). :-)

Well, I'm out of time, so I'll say goodbye here. I got whacked,
unexpectedly, on Tuesday, and have been hustling to get stuff wrapped
up ever since. Here is a hopeful place to say goodbye, anyway, because
I'm still optimistic that this Highgate thing is going to happen.

It was ironic, but I got TWO certified packages yesterday: the
"package" from Mother Digital, and a fat envelope from GDTS. I didn't
have time to open them both. My one ticket to Buckeye Lake came
through! I can carry one, *maybe* two, if anyone needs a ride...

Could the responsible party please put me on the not-at-DEC list?
I'll be at "niedner@world.std.com" after this weekend.

Goodbye, DECheads. Thanks for the warmth of your electronic presence,
which has brightened many of my days. I hope to see you all physically
    at shows now and again.

I spoke with Athena :) who knew what night I wanted a reservation for.
You need 2 nights to reserve though. 27 must be for a lean-to because
a tent site is something like 12 per night so the total for me ended
up being 27 bucks for 2 nights (that's for 4 people. extra people mean a
few dollars per head per night).

People are reserving campsites for 7/12 and 7/13? It it practical to

there's also a $3 reservation fee. assuming 4 people, that comes to $27 for

why do you say very unlikely? it's in the middle of the week in the middle

you will, however, probably see a number of people taking a break from phish

Lisa Yetto has been in contact with me and others in this file to try to
organize (oh god, that word!) a DEChead camping situation at some campground
near the show. It looks like the Lake Carmi campground is becoming the de
facto standard. I say let's run with it. Has anyone reserved a site at
another camprground? (cancel it! :-))

According to my VT map, Lake Carmi is about 10 miles from Highgate Center,
which is at the intersection of Rtes. 78 and 207. The lake is bordered on the
east side by Lake Carmi State Park, and is just west of Rt. 236.

(adam picks up the phone and calls VT)

OK, I just reserved site 23 for the 12th and 13th. The site works out to $27
TOTAL, which is $12 a day for 2 days = $24 plus $3 reservation fee.

I am alone so far on my site so I can take another tent and car, and each site
holds up to 4 people without incurring the $3 per person per day extra. There
are 176 sites.

I had a nice long conversation with the manager. The sites in the 20's are
near a bathroom, they do have showers, you can swim in the lake, they are real
psyched to have us there, the place is about 1/3 full now, they will have an
overflow area (which is just a huge lawn) for the proposed bonfire after the
show and for people who just show up with no reservations (and they will pay
extra). They will have sheriffs and their own people driving through during
the day Wed and during the show for security. The place is run by the VT Youth
Corps or something like that and they are a "liberal" campground. THey
acknowledge it's going to be a late night on Wednesday!

Hey now!!

well with the Vermont shows really happening Gerry and i decided it'd be fun to
get a large group camping. Don't mistake this for an attempt to organize you
cretins :-) we simply are going to reserve 10 sites at a campground in Vermont
for July 12 and 13 and offer them out for you people to join us first come,
first serve. So, if you are interested in joining us please email me or ger.

	Lisa email: lota@db1.cc.rochester.edu
	Ger email: grg@world.std.com

We decided to jump the gun and deal with this this way (rather than lengthy
discussions and votes) so we could actually find campgrounds with a group of
sites still available. We are making reservations at a campground which is
maybe 20 miles SE of Highgate. According to the map that location offers us a
few alternatives for a route into the show which is definitely a plus (anyone
remember Maine with it's 1 road?) Anyway this place offers tent sites for
$10.50 (one tent per site, two people per tent) and your other basic camping
stuff ... bathrooms, showers, jacuzzi .. ooops I got carried away! :-)

Should I need to use my CC for reservations, I will definitely be expecting
money (checks, deposits into my dcu) to hold each of your reservations so I
don't have to shell out $200+ for too long! The reservations are for July 12
and July 13. If this doesn't jive with your plans let us know but we may offer
priority to people planning on staying two nights. We can always give you the
name and # of the place and you can make your own arrangements for one night if
that works out.

So, if'n your interested let one or both of us know asap. We need to know how
many tents (sites), how many people per, and the dates you are interested in.
Unless we get more than 6 yes' before we make the reservations we only plan to
hold 6 or so sites. If we don't fill all the sites say, within a week, I'll
probably call back and cancel a few.

Lisa

PS. btw; it was nice talkin to ya' again! :-)

PPS. Adam, if you join us remember your breadcrumbs!!!! ;^) ;^)

Now don't forget that little hint I let you guys in on, TicketMaster
has something like 70 lines, numbered from 2000 (or whatever) down.
If'n you can't get through to the main number, try 2001, 2002, etc.
Apparently this works, but it doesn't do much other than get you
past the busy signal. You still have to wait for an available operator,
but that's not tooo bad. I still haven't made up my mind about
going. It's a bit of a bad time for my wife to take off (in between
2 weeks our daycare provider is taking off, so it would be hard to
take more time off from work. And yes, I'll probably take some time
off around then too.) But she's sort of given me an OK if I can
find someone to go with. I'll have to figure out the guilt quotient
and see if I can live with it ;-)

Well, I checked with Amy, and since her sister is about to have twins any day
now, and she is likely to leave me with Hannah and Dan for a few days to
help out, my guilt quotient is clear and I have the go ahead for a solo
trip. So.... assuming I get a ticket, and no other bozo's hook up with
me, could I scam into someone's site with a small tent and small car?
Probably head up that morning and need a place to sleep after, along with
other dechead agenda's. Costs shared, of course. I hates standing on
line since I no longer have the enough time to take off and hang out overnight
or whatever, so I guess I'll be putting my own advice to the test. Can't
hurt....

you can stay on my site (#20)

it's currently just me, deane, and possibly one more. up to 8 are allowed.

i believe they said something to the effect that after tuesday night they are
going to be parking all of the cars in the day lot. or maybe that was just
starting wednesday after the show. not sure exactly, but the gist of it is
that they're trying to control the traffic within the campground. so, if you
don't show up until wednesday, you may have to walk your stuff from your car to
the site.

p.s. we probably also ought to try to arrange carpooling to minimize the
# of vehicles heading up. i can fit 3 people plus gear in my car.

i'd love to do that, but i am a little concerned about leaving my bike
unattended outside of a concert.

someone determined enough can break thru any lock. or even if it is locked up
well, it's pretty simple to strip a bike of its components.

i still may do it (and i used to leave my bike unattended all the time at
school), but i am a little worried. i hate to be paranoid, but after my
experience at the buffalo show last year i'm not quite as trusting of

    too
    Just got through 2

Hmmm, did that look ok. Hard to tell with this keyboard and editor.

What I meant to say, and I'll be careful now. Just got through too.
but about 10:15 or so, and then waited for about 5 minutes with
"Thanks for calling all tied up next available ....."

And then they kept asking me to speak up, sigh..... Must be in
major mumbling mode today, or it's a bit loud in their office.
But picked up 4, just for a round number. 2 reserved for a
friend (the juggernaut) who MAY go, but isn't really sure at the
    moment, and 1 for extra's.

As far as the dialing experiment went, I tried a few 20xx numbers
and they all seemed tied up. 2042 got somebodies answering machine
in an accounting office. Could be ticketmasters I guess, but
it did seem to be a personal line. Never got more than a busy
on any of the others. However, as compared to 2000, they were
    ta bit less
uh, hum, a bit less travelled on. I started out upstairs with
the cordless phone, and then went downstairs to press the the modem
line into service. Weird. At points I was getting stereo
busy signals. But about 70% of the time, the 2000 number would
ring and then "We're sorry, all circuits are busy. Try your call
again later. Worcester Tandem." The other numbers didn't get that
at least. The kids were hanging off me half the time too.
But then Amy took them out, and I decided to try using the computer
to dial up one of the phones and take the strain off my head
    when TicketMaster finally picked up.

Of course now, with our lack of communication, I'll be in good
shape if I actually get the tickets! Her read back address
seemed mostly okay, though I did have to ask to change the
Maine to Massachusetts :-( At least she had the zip
    right!

    Well, beats standing on line.

PEOPLE IN VERMONT TOWN PREPARE FOR DEAD FANS

(AP) HIGHGATE VT. - Residents of Highgate are waiting with a
mixture of anticipation and apprehension for the arrival in a month of
the Grateful Dead and an estimated 60,000 fans.
Town officals and concert organizers chose the town's 40 acre
Franklin County Fairgrounds as the site for a concert by the legendary
rock band, which has been playing all over the country for 30 years.
The July 13 concert is expected to be the largest ever held in
    Vermont.

    MIXED FEELINGS

Residents of the rural community near the Canadin border expressed
    mixed feelings about the onslaught.
Carl Martel, who is 70, agreed to let a Kielbasa vendor set up on
    his front lawn for $500.
"Everybody's out to make a buck," Martel said. "Now is the time to
    take advantage of it."
Mark Kemp, 37, the owner of a local convenience store, said he was
buying a couple thousand cases of beer for the week, the amount he
    usually sells in three months.
He said he had learned that Grateful Dead Fans favored Heineken,
    Beck's and Rolling Rock.
"They're 50 years old now," Kemp said. "they don't have to buy 16
    oz Pabst."
Kemp, whose store is a mile west of the concert site, said he
believed other supplies might be in demand.

Ok, gang, let's get this organized. We've got a certain number of campsites, and a
different number of people, but I can't believe we wouldn't be able to fit everyone...
I suggest a communist approach, and getting everyone who doesn't yet have a place to
camp, into a site that still has room.

I'll help organize this if people are willing to cooperate and share the space.

Anyone been to Lake Carmi? Are the sites really big enough to handle three or four
tents and six or eight people?

Well? Whadaya think?

I like this, Tim says let's orgaize and I'm realing in shock, that's like taking
a vote. BUt at least he doesn't try to keep it on one screen. Then we decide to
organize by who needs sites, who wants sites, who has sites, who's going and
who's not going. It's comforting to know that in the threat of organization
all the DECheads react with a vote. I wonder which is going to be more fun,
organizing this or going to it? ;^)

I don't know if I'm going yet. It depends on on wheather or not I get
tickets first. From what I hear it's a 99.9 (or it that .5) % chance we can get
them. Then the intensity of surgical procedures five days before the show has
an influence on the go/no go situation. And if those all work to allow us to
go I'll then need a campsite space for three. So this variable constant should
make for easy organization. Just don't forget us.

It'll certainly be more fun than work

My surgen said "don't drive", it was only 10 hours I didn't cheat much.

This time it's Robyn, I had three weeks to recover, she gets three days
before the drive. So it could be a no go for that. And if I need to pick

well, that doesn't say anything about disallowing coolers, food, non-alcoholic
liquids, and plastic containers. but just because things aren't always
explicitly prohibited doesn't necessarily stop security from turning it away.

Know what you mean, Rich. Once I had trouble getting into the Centrum
for a JGB show because of my Swiss Army Knife. Can't remember if I
dropped it back off at the car or just slid it in my pants.
Nowadays I just usually leave it in the car. Even though otherwise,
it hardly ever leaves my possession. I think the worst anyone has to
fear from my knife is getting some infection from cutting themselves with
the blade, since I don't often run it through the dishwasher. (The clothes
washer has seen it a few times though ;-)

i did have it with me for a specific reason, one that security probably
wouldn't have been too happy with. i used it to cut the plastic ties that
hold the wooden chairs together on the floor, so that we could neatly fold
a group of them up during the show and make a dance area.

the security guard told me to put it back in the car, which i couldn't do
because i didn't drive, and my ride was already inside. i said that i would
be satisfied with leaving it at the customer service desk if i was given a
receipt and could claim it afterwards. at that point i was told that there
was no customer service desk, to which i responded, "don't lie to me. i
know that there is one because i know people that have been there." (thanks
to this notes file) that took the guy a little off guard, but then he changed
his line to "well, i can't take you there." finally another security guard
who was witnessing this walked up to me and whispered, "why don't you just
go to another door?" i gather that the hidden implication was "and do a
better job of hiding it" i did (on both counts).

i believe the story is that it's normally used for daytime parking, but during
the deadshows it will be used for overflow camping. no reservations, just
first come-first serve for those who couldn't get spots at the regular

What is everyone's opinion on bringing a bike to the show?
As anyone had a bad experience or is aware of one, in which
    a bike got riped off.

I always want to bring my Mtn. bike to the show so I can cruise
around and see more occasionally when I get bored. I never have
though for fear that someone without tix and without anything to do
will steal my bike while I'm in the show. I got a wagon, maybe I
    could lock it inside?

I've taken my bike to a few shows.....after riding it I either lock
it to the roofrack or inside my car. Once I rode my bike from my
campground to the Vermont Reggae fest......I couldn't believe all the
bikes that were at that!! (I think Highgate will be the same), once
I got there, I chained it to a cyclone fence....no problems.

a friend of mine had his bike at Giant Stadium, on the bike rack on
the front of his van......not locked or chained for the whole day...
    nothing happened to it.

yeah, I think there'll be a ton of bikes there too.
One reason I think it'll be nice to have one is all
those thousands of cars flooding those little country
roads. I'll just zip around 'em; there's probably some
    good trails there too.

403.225anybody interested in Misiquoi canoing on 7/14?NOVA::ZASTERATue Jul 05 1994 19:1218
My girlfriend and I are interested in doing a leisurely canoe trip on
the Misiquoi River on Thursday (the day after the Highgate show).
I've got *1* canoe.

This is right in the same area where the show is. The last 15 or so miles
of the Misiquoi (before it flows into Lake Champlain) are supposed to be
slow and easy. It goes right through a big wildlife refuge (Misiquoi W.R.,
naturally) that should have lots of birds and stuff.

Anyway, this trip would be ideal with 2 cars--one stationed on Lake Champlain
at a convenient pick-up spot. The details of this trip are described
in the DeLorme Vermont Gazeteer.

Is there anybody out there with another canoe that might be interested in
hooking up with us to do this?

         Craig

I highly recommend that if you don't already have a DeLorme's Vermont Atlas,
get one!

This atlas shows all the roads around Highgate in great detail. This may
prove usefull to know in the traffic mess thats sure to happen.
It shows the Lake Capri State Camground. Doesn't show any airport/fairgrounds,
but I guess once we're up there it's be obvious where the show is.

Yes, any decent bookstore, eq. The Paper Store in Maynard and in Acton,
or the chain bookstores in malls. The N.H and Maine atlases are also very
usefull to have. Much better detail than regular maps.

Josh, the Vermont DeLorme atlas does sho the airport - in is 2 pages
before/after the map w/Cami Lake SP. It is real close to I89
between Higate Springs and Higate Center/falls. There only seem
to be a couple roads in the area so traffic should be bad.

Yeah, I finally realized to look on that page, cause I was curious where the
campground Craig Zastera (hi Craig! wish I hadda canoe!) is staying at is.

Ya know, theres _really_ a creek there called Dead Creek. :-) Right by the
Missisquo National Wildlife Refuge.

I think a good bet to get to Campri is to get off at exit 19. If Campri isn't
running busses to/from the show like I thought someone here said they would,
then I'd bet on taking some of the back roads to the NORTH of Highgate and
sorta looping around in from the north side.

I just talked to Lake Carmi, they are so friendly!
(at least the one person I talked to was)
    Some info:

to check in go to the "contact center", tell them the
name of the person the site is under. If its paid for
you can go to your site. Each site has a fire pit,and
they allow as many tents has you have, within reason.
8 person max. first 4 are covered on the site fee,
any additional people are a cost per person.

Only 4 out of 174 sites are non-dead related folk.

OVERFLOW SITE: in a hayfield, first come first served,
she said get there early, like Tuesday, because she has
had a ton of calls concerning overflow. No campfires in
the overflow, but the park is gonna build a bonfire for
us and possibly have some guitar players there after
the show as a good-will gesture. Isn't that nice?

There are nature trails, a nature center and one trail for
mountain bikes. Swimming in the lake is good, they rent
paddle boats, canoes and rowboats. Rowboats are $5/half hr
and $20 for the day. One day fishing licenses are available.

The show is 10-12 miles away. They are working on getting
a bus available. Some guy in town may be subcontracted.

    gotta go,

That all depends... How the roads are, what the traffic is like, what the
weather is (more of the same but a bit more humid, I've heard). I'll be
leaving a few hours earlier than that myself. Hope things aren't too
bad. From the looks of things, Carmi is actually past the concert site
(assuming you're coming in from 89.) So, given the situation, it might
be best to head to the concert directly. But judge when you get up
there, and wait for the Ben and Jerry's stop on the way home ;-)
