103.0. "Livin' on Bluez power" by BIODTL::FERGUSON (Obscured by Clouds) Mon Jan 14 1991 17:23

"Da Bluez" run deep in the Grateful Dead's music, especially
	the older stuff (Pigpen era).

This being the case, there are probably a couple of people who
dig Da Bluez in this conference -- it's one of my faves.

So, let's use this topic to discuss local bluez acts coming to
	your favorite bar, city, etc...

	Reviews are welcome.

103.1Ronnie at the Sit 'n' Bull, 1/16/90BIODTL::FERGUSONObscured by CloudsMon Jan 14 1991 17:2612
Ronnie Earl, a Massachusetts Blues mon, is a very good act
to catch if your sweet spot is guitar.

I believe Ronnie and his band are playing at the Sit 'n'
Bull pub this coming Wednesday. It will be a no-alcohol
event because the 'Bull has lost it's liquor permit for
	a short spell...

	Heidi, have you confirmed this?

When I was in Cal for the New Years shows, I spent a couple hours in
San Fran airport waiting for a friend to arrive. While hanging around
there, I started talking to some guy who was waiting also. He was a
standup comedian in town for a show and we started talking about show
biz, etc. He was telling a story about doing a show in Boston and how
his cousin joined him on stage and the place went nuts. Yep, you
guessed it.. his cousin is Ronnie Earl! Guess there's some serious
entertainment genes in that family, huh?!

Yup, it's all true, Ronnie will be at the Sit'n'Bull tonight for
an all ages alcohol-free show. They don't get their license back
    until Sunday.

    Be there or be cubed.

103.4We all have the bluez.29812::FERGUSONObscured by CloudsThu Jan 17 1991 15:1530
Well, after hearing the president's speech at the Sit 'n' Bull, Ronnie
took the stage with his band. Played a couple of instrumentals and asked for
a moment of silence. Not even the hum from the amps could be heard. Went
into a nice, slow, and emotional instrumental next. Pretty sobering. Sugar
Ray came out and sang a number of songs, including one duet (Sugar Ray and
Ronnie stumming) which was really sweet.  We were sitting right up front;
nice location to see and feel the music. First set music tends to be more
mellow; this first set followed that mold.

	Break time.

Second set. Opened with a few harder driving numbers. Sugar Ray came
out. Sang a number of tunes. Ronnie's guitar solos were getting increasingly
more intense. He turned his Fender in often for the hollow electric because
it kept going out of tune from playing it so hard. Sweat starting to form
on the foreheads of the band members. At one point, Sugar Ray was singing
without the aid of the microphone; pretty intense. The crowd was totally
into it; nice and quiet. Sugar Ray exited stage right, and Ronnie called
up a friend to sing a few numbers. His friend Brian could sing. Nice change
from Sugar Ray. But let me tell you, Ronnie was possessed now. His guitar
solos were BURNING... his fender guitar was getting beaten. Ronnie was jumping
and stomping around stage. Intense electrical sounds were coming from the
speakers. Brain sang two songs. The fender needed tuning again after those
3 songs. I'm surprised that he didn't pop a string the way he was whaling
on that guitar... Sugar Ray came back to do a few more to end the night.

Intense night of blues. Appropriate given the world condition at
this point...

	See you there next Wednesday.

103.7Jan 30, 1991BIODTL::FERGUSONIs it just a waste of time?Thu Jan 31 1991 14:2225
Well, another Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters night passed by. Great
night of music. The first set was a bit more cranking then usual. Having
noticed this, I thought that the second set would be really wild!

	It was!

They jammed very hard. After a couple of smokin' instrumentals, his
guitar was in need of tuning. While it's being tuned, Ronnie will jam using
his '52 Gibson hollow body. Beautiful sound comes out of that. However, he
tends to be kind to that axe. A couple of guest guitar players (some of
Ronnie's friend I think) played along for a few songs each. One guy was
really hot and I though that Ronnie felt like he was stealing the show.
After this guy stepped down, Ronnie lean hard on his Fender... he was jumpin'
and jammin' around the stage.

	What a night of music.

If ya'll want something to forget about the problems you have in your
life today (be it your job or the war), come and see Ronnie. His music will
take your mind off everything. At least with me it works. I can't even play
darts while listening to this band because I get so distracted by the music.

	Powerful stuff mon.

Back again next Wednesday, 6 days away. Yeah.

Hot night last night at the Bull. Ronnie and his band were very solid; lots
and lots of intense jammin ... Ronnie's keyboard player, Tony Z, would make
a good keys player for the dead...... he improves SOOOOOO much.... but, he's

THEY...

were they hot last night!!! Ronnie invited some of his buddies up to make
some music too... one thing about Ronnie, he doesn't have an ego problem.
He likes to share the stage with friends after the same thing: making good
music!!!

Anyways, Rick Nelson, formally of the Boston Baked Blues, played / sang
a couple of songs while Ronnie and sugar ray (singer) kicked back. then,
Rick Nelson's guitar player played w/ him, and a woman also got up and
jammed on the harp... NICE NIGHT OF MUSIC to say the least! Played until
12:30 am............. nice and long.

Got to see Dave Russo, the elder Dave Clark, Jon S, and, much to my surprise,
Heidi MOllenhauer ( :-) * 10000) ....

I saw Ronnie Earl Wednesday night for the first time since the
re-organization of the Broadcasters (I must have seen Ronnie and the
Broadcasters in the old configuration about 25-30 times).

Quite different to say the least. The new Bass guy is quite good.
The keyboard guy isn't quite as enthusiastic as the former guy (Tony) and I
much prefer the sound of the Hammond B-3 over those synthe'd-type keyboards.

Ronnie and the drummer haven't changed. Both fantastic musicians,
IMO. No vocalist or harp player this time, but the drummer did sing one
number which was excellent. Ronnie!!! He is one smooth character on the
guitar ... while the place was quiet and transfixed on Ronnie while he
was playing to a bunch of folks at one table, he did a very, very sweet
instrumental of Silent Night... very, very kind, poignant and smooth.. Only
Ronnie can be that smooth, imo.

He'll be back Jan 8 (he's off the Belgium for a spell), at the Bull,
so I'm told.

Well, I suppose that depends on your definition of 'right'...

But, they have the special 'slow pour' (does it use a nitrogen gas (like wine
taps) instead of CO2?) tap, so that you get beer, not foam...

Sounds like they DON'T know how to pour it correctly......

You're supposed to fill the glass 3/4 at a normal speed, then let the
Guinness settle a bit. When its settled, you 'top it off' by pushing
the tap handle forward, pouring more Guinness WITHOUT nitrogen into the
glass, filling the glass completely, and leaving a (settled) half-inch
head on the top. You usually have to let the Guinness settle for a
couple minutes before topping it off.

The whole band was into it and Ronnie just played that guitar like nobody's

rfb has the facts straight mon. Kenny Burrell is a very cool guitarist. I
have one CD of his and would like to get more -- only thing is, Noteworthy
doesn't carry much in the way of non-popular artists...

SRV's the Sky is Crying turned me on to Chitlins, which in turn made me
get the Kenny B CD...

	Speeking of Lil' wing...

Last night, at approximately 5:26 P.m, WZLX in Boston played a version of
Hendrix doing this which I hadn't heard before. It lasted at least ten minnits,
had NO SINGING, and was absolutley stellar!!

A pointer to this particular version on vinyl, High Density Poly-ethylene, or

Hey / mon - I don't think anyone would ever say anybody BUT Hendrix
did Little Wing! :)

And as for Fog's question - FOG, I'll bet this is on the new 4 cd set of
all live shows (whole shows) called STAGES. I heard 2 of the 4 disks
new year's eve and I'll just have to say I heard enough...2 shows in a row!
whew I was looking for some "MUZAK" or elevator music to recover :)

and what else? oh yes, someone mentioned Stormy Monday's. Just wanted to
say I used to deliver groceries to the 90 year old woman who owned the home
before she died and they turned that place into a restaurant. Used to take
her *forever* to answer the door when I knocked but she was a sweet old
woman.

Well, I left my setlist at home, but last night, / joined forces with the
Howard Randall blues band and delighted those of us in attendance with his
guitar playing, singing (7 on the tms scale [though the upper reaches of the
scale are yet to be defined]) and, yes folks, humming. A fine night of blues
at Shenanigan's in the polite, friendly, though rainsoaked town of Londonderry
NH. Set list? Well, this is from memory, which is slowly returning after this
extraordinary performance, but here goes:

/ and the Howard Randall Blues Band ..1/23/91 Londonderry NH (no Hornsby)

 First set:

 Some song..
 Some other song
 Still some other song
Hurts me too (/ on vocals)
Some other song (not a reprise of the above)

 Break.

 Howard does a few tune
 / hums and groans
 some song
 A couple other songs.
 a few more

 Break.

I was emotionally drained after all of this and departed to be reintroduced
to reality, but this was a fine job, by a fine young man and his axe. Not
 bad for an Ibanez :^)

>Can someone tell me what to expect...for instance...
>what's a good time to get there? when does the show start? what's the cover?

Well, the place is not a posh joint by any means. There are a fair amount of
tables in front and booths in the "main" area. If you want to sit up front,
you best get there no later then 8pm, although sat. night might be different.
You can go earlier - they do serve dinner. The band will hit the stage, I'd
guess, 'bout 9-9:30 or so; first set about 1.25 - 1.5 hrs, break, then a
second set for another 1.25-1.5 hrs (end about 12:30pm, or so).... cover is
$7 on wednesdays; I'd reckon the same for sat night.

>are there directions somewhere in here? how's the parking?

Parking is no problem - DEC HQ (the mill) is right across the street - i usually
park on the street... it is a mellow place, not like the city at all.

>All this planning is because I will be traveling from Bedford, NH (outside
>Manchester) which is quite a jaunt (am I crazy?) and I don't know the area

you might wanna call 'em for directions as the way i come is different (maybe
someone in here can explain the 495s -> 117e route to the bull).

the way i go is this: 495s -> 119/Littleton Common exit. right off exit over
495. straight through the lights on the hill. this is 119/2a. at the
27/2a junction (sunoco/shell gas station), hang a right. this is 27. follow
27 through 1 set of lights (@ rte 111)... keep going. you'll pass a mobil
on your right. you'll go over a black train bridge; you'll eventually pass
a Saab dealership on your right; a used car place on your left. golf course
on your left. then you'll see a cumberland farms. _immediately_ after the
cumb. farms, take the RIGHT fork. go straight through the lights. this is
downtown Maynid (sic) - you'll see the DEC clock tower. at the end of this
road, make a right. the bull is about 2/10s up the street on the right.

>(so if I don't get in, I won't know where else to go!). I'm keen on keeping
>the stress level down so I can relax and enjoy the night.

if you wanna keep the stress level down, get there early, choose a table you'll
be comfortable at, order up some dinner, and kick back w/ a couple of drinks.

Robben Ford plays a mean guitar and is truely a grate one...the album
    i've got here is;

Robben Ford and the Blue Line on GRP/Stretch Records...

Dugo's Blues News brings you yet another choice pick of the week...

Went home and pulled out some others from the 'Ford Family'....
Both of these are on Blue Rock'it Records which is kind of obscure...
    The first is:

"Mark Ford with the Robben Ford Blues Band"...it's excellent Rock based
blues with Mark Ford on Harp and Vocals, Robben playin' guitar, Roscoe
Beck on Bass and Tom Brechtlein on Drums...

Whereas the Robben Ford Blue Line album is more Jazz influenced, this
album is definitly towards the Rock spectrum...Mark's got a grate voice
and can play a mean harp...

    The second is:

"The Ford Blues Band"...this album isn't quite as polished as the other
two, but that adds some charm and the music is a gutsier based blues.
It features Mark Ford on harp and vocals, Patrick Ford on drums and
vocals, Garth Webber on Guitar and vocals and Ron Gurewitz on bass...

Next week i'll turn ya' all on to the best of 'Miss Honey' Alexander
and the Rouge of her life......

    Stay 'tuned'...

103.134Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors...CARROL::YOUNGwhere is this place in space???Mon Jul 19 1993 16:1521
Hey now...caught Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors at the Plantation
Club last night...grate freakin' band...the bass player plays an old
standup bass and Mark really rocks on Harp...one of the best i've ever
heard and i've heard a bunch of 'em....only guy that might come close
is Jimmy Lea and The Funk Pumpers out of Cleveland.

The Guitarist was Joel Foy who recently busted out of the James
Harmond Band to go on the road with Mark...this guy playes a hollow
bodied Gretch guitar and man can he make that thing sing...truely a
virtuoso....picked up a tape from them called 'Hard Love: 1990' which
is really well mixed...wish they had a CD but he was sold out. Anywho,
the guitarist on the tape is Junior Watson of 'Kingsnakes' fame and he
sounds soild....but man, he just doesn't have the sweet swing of Joel
    Foy....

These guys are out of San Francisco, so you probably won't seem them
around much, but if'n you git the chance...don't pass 'em by, you'll be
    sorry ya did....

103.135Bluz Nuz for Yuz....CARROL::YOUNGwhere is this place in space???Tue Aug 03 1993 16:4349
Hey now...more Bluz Nuz yuz can uz....

Miss Honey is one hum dinger of a piano player. Her full name is Honey
Alexander and the rouge of her life is Rod Piazza...together they form
the nucleus of Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers....

This band has been around for a long time with some of their early
releases dating back to 1981. They have some newer CD's out on Blacktop
records (paving the way to your soul)...

The newest one is 'Alphabet Blues' (1992) and continues in the line of
Rod's Upbeat Rockin' Rythum Blues...Rod's got a clean smooth voice and
this dude can play a harp...backed up by Miss Honey on Piano they form
a tandum that is internationally respected. In fact, much of their fame
has been drawn from blues affectiendo's in Europe where they've toured
    substantially.

The new band is composed of Rod on Vocals and Harp, Miss Honey on
Piano, Alex Schultz on Guitar, Bill Stuve on Bass and Jimmy Botts on
Drums. Another album to check out is "Blues in the Dark" which was
released in 1991....again on Blacktop Records. It features the same
    lineup.

If you can find it, there's one more that i know of that is a
'keeper'....It's a real obscure label called Hightone Records and the
CD is a compilation from now out of print records they did in their
early years. It's called the "The Mighty Flyers - Essential
Collection" and it contains songs from "Radioactive Material" (1981),
"File Under Rock" (1984) and "From Start to Finnish" (1985) which is a
collection of live takes done in Finland.

The "Essential Collection" is pretty rare stuff so if you see it, snag
it. The early band had Rod, Honey and Bill Stuve in it but also featured
    Junior Watson.....

Yep, same guy who's played with The Kingsnakes, Canned Heat, Mark
Hummel and a host of others...from the liner notes, it says that Junior
Watson got his start with Rod Piazza, and the playing on this early
stuff is raw and vibrant...truely grate guitar playin'....

Well kids, that's the Bluz Nuz for today....next week, i'll but
together a lead on what Guitar Player Magazine has called America's
Best Unknown Guitar Player....this guy covers the spectrum from
    Rockabilly to Roadhouse Bluz.....

    Stay Tuned....

103.136Danny Gatton...CARROL::YOUNGwhere is this place in space???Wed Aug 11 1993 16:1897

Yes kids...time once again for the latest installment of Bluz U can Uz...
this week i'd like to present for your muzical entertainment a man that
Guitar Player Magazine has called "America's Greatest Unknown Guitar
  Player"...Mr. Danny Gatton!!!

We have our own home time favorite right here in Ronnie Earl...now take a
trip to Washington D.C. and get introduced to their prodigial son... i
could never do Danny Gatton right so i'll take the liner notes from his
"88 Elmira St." album and let Brawner Smoot do the talkin'...

"In 1957, a twelve year old Southeast D.C. kid spent hours in his
Elmira Street home making multi-track tapes with his new blonde Gibson
ES-350 electric guitar, Martin flattop with DeArmound pickup, and two
reel-to-reel decks. He recorded note perfect duplications of his hero
Les Paul's "How High the Moon" and Bill Doggett's "Honky Tonk",
impeccably copying Billy Butler's blues guitar solo. Somedays he'd
borrow a third deck and add echo to the Chet Atkins and Scotty Morre
licks he was deciphering. His supportive parents, cheering "Play a
million miles an hour!", urged him to pick with the speed of Jimmy Bryant
  and their neighbor Roy Clark.

A year later, the yongster appeared on a local country music TV show and
played "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" so fast on his Vega five-string banjo
that the house band couldn't keep up! When the astonished host, Don
Owens, asked the kid how long he'd been playing, a squeaky voice
answered, "Seven MONTHS". At fourteen, fake ID in hand, he joined a band
of older working musicians called the Offbeats. Word quickly circulated
that he was the guitarist of choice. Danny Gatton's musical odyssey had
  begun.

Around 1974, the guitarist and rhythm section seceded from a popular D.C.
country rock aggegate, Liz Meyer and Friends, to form a volatile power
trio aptly named Danny and The Fat Boys. Armed with his '52 Fender
Telecaster and tweed 4-10 Bassman amp, Gatton fired off screaming blues
licks, Echoplexed rockabilly lines, fluid jazz octave passages, finger
twisting pedal steel-like string bends, cascading artifical harmonic
fills, mercuial right hand banjo rolls, and Heineken beer bottle slides,
  often within one solo!

Two years later, having become a cornerstone of the blossoming local
music scene, various incarnations of the Danny Gatton Band continued to
present a diverse repertoire of guitar driven American music,
incorporating blues, rockabilly, funk and jazz, in and around the
periphery of the nation's capital. He appeared at gigs sporting a
Charlie Christian pickup on his belt buckle, toting an Emmons twin ten
pedal steel, Gibson Mastertone banjo, a '52 and '53 Tele, and what became
the most recognized instrument in Washington, a flashy pinstriped '61 Les
Paul Custom outfitted with a homemade guitar mounted (pre-digital)
electronic invention, the Magic Dingus Box, whose many knobs and lights
controlled everything from his rigged up motor driven Echoplex to his
  swirling Leslie organ speakers.

His legendary status among six-string connoisseurs grew in the late 70's
with his leadership of the fiery Redneck Jazz Explosion (with pedal steel
innovator Buddy Emmons), subsequent sideman work in the early '80's with
country star Roger Miller and neo-rockabilly crusader Robert Gordon, and
three homespun record releases. Danny was nicknamed "The Humbler" (by
fellow bender Amos Garrett) after a red hot bootleg cassette of the
Gordon Band live in Berkeley, California circulated among guitarists.
Pickers continue to make pilgrimages from all over the country to be awed
by the artistry of D.C.'s favorite son.

In the three decades that have transpired since those early Elmira St.
experiments, Danny has absorbed every significant American guitar style,
hone his ferocious technical ability, and blended it all into his
beautifully eclectic, intimitable and soulful guitar voice. "88 Elmira
St.", Danny's major label Debut, presents an eleven piece cross section
of this man's musical versatility. For Gatton fans, "88 Elmira St."
offers a satisfying fix. For the uninitiated, after this taste, you'll
soon be hooked. Like the voice in the last cut, you too will yell,
"Yeah, play it one more time for me!"

Well folks, there you have it...America's Greatest Unknown Guitar
Player... he has five albums out...the first two are hard to come by, but
i found "Redneck Jazz" out in Albuquerque, so they are out there...

1.) "Redneck Jazz" on NRG Records (1978)
2.) "Unfinished Business" on NRG Records
3.) "New York Stories" on Blue Note Records
4.) "88 Elmira St." on Elektra Records (1991)
5.) "Crusin Deuces" on Elektra Records (1993)

His latest two albums are more blues/rockabilly oriented and of the two i
like his newest "Crusin Deuces" the best. The Redneck Jazz album has a
Soulful Rock/Country bend to it...which i like but may not appeal to all.
In any case, if'n you get a chance to see, hear or play any Danny Gatton,
not checkin' it out is truely your loss....

Next week, well take a 'slide' down under to visit the "Hole in Perth"...
till then, keep livin' on Bluz Power....

too many things to do and not enough time! i've found that life is like this

anyways, i did brew up a nice batch; somewhat dark ale; 1.051 SG; i also

this might sound weird but the highlight was when ronnie was not there
! the band just started without him and did maybe 5 tunes with the
drumer sang one and the bassest sang another ! when they finished the
5th song they all looked at eachother with the look of now what do we
play ? then we hear a knock at the side door ! someone in the crowd
gets up and opens the door, and in comes Ronnie and Paul R. Ronnie
jumps up on stage with a shit eating grin of sorry Im late ! with out
much haste the band kicks in and Ronnie lights the room on fire ! after
the tune Ronnie turns to the band and say lets do a Bruce K. tune but
the band says wel we already done that one :') Ronnie lets out a laugh
and say to the crowd well how often will this happen tonight ?

Where was Ronnie? I think I read in yesterday's globe that he was at the
MFA doing a 30 minute intro to a film on the blues (the film featured koko
and either Lonnie B. or possibly Little Ed?? nah someone else I think).
They had a 6:30 and 8:30 showing and Earl was supposed to do his 1/2 hour
thing before each.

	he was late.

Well, went down to Providence on Saturday to see Robert Cray at
Lupo's...what a show it was. Ronnie Earl opened up for him. i've only
seen Ronnie over at 'Da Bull' and in a small room like that, he really
can't open it up much. But at Lupo's he flat out lit it up...very
    powerful and oh so soulful...

Kim Wilson was entertaining, but after Ronnie's performance, sorta
flat. Did get to see Junior Watson play guitar, for the very first
time...he sounds grate in the studio, but can't hold a flame to Ronnie
    live on stage.

Robert Cray was, well incredible... The guy is a first rate entertainer
from the word go...he held the crowd captivated from the very first
song and never let them down...i liked the light show that he had
supporting him. At first you noticed it because of all the individual
beams of light, but after a while it just became part of the music...
Well done all the way through and not repetative...

Anyway, enjoyable time had by all, catch it if you can...he is, as the
MC stated, "The country's premier blues artist"!

I was thumbing through a book called "the Eric Clapton Scrapbook",
the other day, and there was a picture of Clapton jamming with
our local boy "Ronnie Earl"!.....EC was wearing a"Roomful of Blues"
t-shirt, I think the photo was taken in 1986 at a club in Boston.

The following message was on the Warners board this morning:

<Well, its still a bit of a wait for the Clapton album (From the Cradle)
but it will be worth it. I've heard it all, and it burns. It features some
of the same songs Clapton and band played at the T.J. Martell foundation
concert benefit a few months back in New York (Avery Fisher Hall) which
I was lucky enough to attend.>

<16 songs; first track to radio is "Tore Down" which will probably go to
radio 3-4 weeks before the album release date. There will be a tour, with
    some surprises -- that's all I can say.>

<Also a great potential single in "Motherless Child". Tht's the one Eric
    evidently thinks would work best.>

    <More info later.>

Will post more as I hear it.

Thought folks might like to know the real story behind Danny Gatton's
    death...

Article: 6584 of rec.music.makers.bass
From: georged@meaddata.com (George Dibos)
Subject: Interesting Danny Gatton Item
Date: 4 Jan 1995 16:29:18 GMT

I spoke at length last night with one of Danny's best friends about the
tragedy (Evan Johns of H-Bombs fame), and was assured that though Danny
did take his own life, it wasn't because of a trifling "marital dispute"
as stated in the press... The real reason was because Danny had suffered
two back-to-back strokes which left one side of his body paralyzed, and
since he'd seen older family members succumb to the same thing (repeated
strokes of increasing severity) while he was growing up, did not wish to
go through such an ordeal--or put his family through one--himself.

Whether such a decision was medically sound or necessary is a moot point,
of course, but it makes a difference to me knowing the truth. That he did
not take his life in anger, but in sadness.

Evan then went on to recount how Danny's death had rekindled the musical
energies of a number of famous musicians... That there was wide agreement
in the musical world that Danny probably had as much raw talent as anyone
born in this century, and if *he* had it simply snatched away by fate, the
rest of us had better get cracking.

Interesting food for thought, as well as a case of dark clouds having a
silver lining, however thin.

If'n you want to check out a little more of Danny and some other
great guitarists...look up Arlen Roth's "Toolin' Around" album on
Blue Plate Music...it has Arlen playing with Danny, Albert Lee, Duane
Eddy, Duke Robillard and Brian Setzer...good stuff...can be found at
    Newberry Comics...

    Enjoy,
