400.0. "Baby Makes Three" by STUDIO::IDE (My mind's lost in a household fog.) Mon Mar 14 1994 14:57

My mind's lost in a household fog
    			Wedding gowns and catalogues
    			Kitchen furnishings and houses
    			Maternity clothes and baby's trousers

"A Legal Matter" by Pete Townshend. I guess you have to be English for
"houses" and "trousers" to rhyme. The rest of the lyrics, about a
    nasty divorce, don't apply. :-)

We're married, have a house, and enough kitchen gadgets to satisfy the
extravagant gourmet. Yes, you guessed it, we're expecting our first
    child in September.

Mom is doing fine, although she's pretty exhausted most of the time.
Dad is oblivious as usual. Emily heard the heartbeat (emphasis on the
singular) at her last pre-natal visit, and that's gotten us pretty
excited. Somehow a test strip changing color didn't have the same
    impact.

Since this is my note, and the topic is me, I'll share a story from my
childhood. I was in my freshman high school English class and we
were going over some vocabulary words. Miss Pinkham called on me to
make up a sentence with the word "natal" in it. I was momentarily
confused (maybe permanently, my graduating class voted me "flakiest")
    and blurted out "post-natal drip."

We're very excited and more than a little nervous. It's going to be an
interesting summer, and that's only the beginning.

Congratulations, Jamie. You can't imagine all the wonderful ways your life
will change. We've done it twice and it hasn't stopped being miraculous.

Someone recently asked me what was the best advice I could give about
becoming a parent. I've thought alot about it since and I think the
best advice would be to relax, learn to let the little things go,
and savor every moment. The other stuff sort of comes naturally.
(This assumes that one is a thoughful, fairly well-adjusted human
    being.)

Anyway, congrats and goodluck. Someone earlier said to get plenty of
rest now. I agree; it could be another 18 or 20 years before you get
    a good night's sleep again.

Thanks for all the good wishes. Mom and Cassidy came home on Sunday
and we've been doing pretty well. The odd thing is that although I've
never even held a newborn before, it all seems very natural to me. I
could easily adapt to being a househusband.

I've been getting plenty of sleep, but nothing wakes me up. Emily's
not getting much sleep, but that's the way it's got to be since I'm not
    equipped for feeding. :-)

My advice to fathers-to-be is to not read too many books or pay too
close attention in childbirth classes. It doesn't follow a script.
Soon after labor began, I asked the obstetrician "ok, next she'll go
into transition labor, then active labor, right?" He replied "I dunno,
I don't read those books." I knew that it was about to happen when the
nurses and doctor, who'd been wandering in and out, returned dressed in
    scrubs instead of lab coats.

One funny thing (from my point of view) was that I could see the
contractions beginning on the monitor before Emily felt them. She
quickly tired of my saying "here it comes..." The funniest moment was
when the doctor, who was doing his first delivery in Mass., held up an
instrument and said "I've never seen one like this before." Emily
couldn't see him, so I had to clarify: "He's talking about the
    instrument, not you."

For you stats freaks (you know who you are):

7lbs. 9oz. (my earlier 1oz. heavier no. was not from the official scale)
    21"
Born at 6:27pm after ~6.5 hrs. of labor
    SPLs:	90dB (Cassidy)	110dB (Emily)
    Elevation: 3rd floor
Mom's first words to Cassidy: "Oh, look at you."
Fashion report: stunning print johnny (Mom)
    		    birthday suit - literally (Cassidy)

Congrats. You will find you have all sorts of skills you never imagined :-)

You're right about the books. If you are going to read anything, pick one,
and only one, and read it. You'll get lots of unsolicited advice, so here
is some more (from our pediatrician, a very laid back guy)... "If friends or
relatives are bugging you with unsolicited advice, just tell them that your
pediatrician is very strict on <whatever your are being bugged about>"

They change so fast, you've got to be here now.

Cassidy got a phone call the other night, which I took since she was
sleeping. The voice on the other end of the line informed me that
    she's pre-approved for a Visa with a $7500 credit limit. Sheesh, the
ink is barely dry on her Social Security card and TRW already has a
file on her? I should've taken them up on it.

I don't think it was a mistake, my wife and I get at least two calls a

I also throw about a dozen mail offers away per week.

..or just give them to me. Our town now accepts junck mail for recyling. I
even found out what they do with it: they mix it with newsprint, shread it
and turn it into insulation you can by at HQ et al. I just bought some this

You're not worried that Cassidy may already have a credit history? I'd
be at least curious as to how she ended up on a prospecting list. It
may be as simple as a bank account in her name, or it may be that
someone else's records have merged with hers.

Like I said, I get a little paranoid about these things (a filing error
