383.0. "This note's for ME" by POWDML::MACINTYRE () Fri Dec 10 1993 15:11

Well, the Digital train will be pulling out of the station
without me next week. After riding that train for almost
14 years, I will officially be terminated (nice word, huh?)
      on Monday, Dec 13.

There is some ambivalence in how I feel about it. On the
one hand I have been exploring outside opportunities
(albeit half-heartedly) during the past 6-8 months, so I
have been interested in moving on to other things.
Although my career at DEC ends involuntarily, I have been
ready for it and am positive about how things will work out
      for me and my family.

On the other hand, it is impossible to not feel some
sadness about leaving a place where I've spent more than
one-third of my life working. The last couple of years
have not been the best for the company and the atmosphere
has been unremittingly tense. Given that, there are still
many, many people and events that had enriched my life.
Perhaps the most enriching and fun aspect of that time has
been the people in GRATEFUL who made Digital a very special
      place!

There are many individuals whom I will miss but it is the
collective wit and wisdom of the GRATEFUL community that I
will miss the most. Each and every one of you contributed
to making me laugh, cry, rage and wonder. Thanks for that.

My plan, such as it is, is to gather my thoughts and
recharge my energy and attitude. I will be networking and
making contacts over the next few weeks and hitting the job
market very hard by the second week of January. My
"package" is enough to keep us going for at about 6-7
months but I surely hope and expect to be employed long
before then. The Boys Club of Nashua is allowing me to
work out there each morning before they open so I will keep
a regular schedule. I don't want to get lazy and languish
around the house making my wife and son miserable.

That's it for now. I sign the papers on Monday and can
stick around cleaning up loose ends until Friday. However,
I have already done most of that so I will unofficially be
all done on Monday. I might check in one or two times
during the week when I get to MKO for some Credit Union
      business.

Take care and keep the faith. You are all special and I'm
glad I got to 'know' you.

      Further on down the road...

      Marv

      P.S.
Please forgive me egotism for starting a new note. I
figure one of the mods will delete it at the end of next
      week. Thanx again.

      P.P.S.
There are a lot of other folks getting let go this week and
I wish those that stay and those that go the best of luck.

around the wonderful Nashua area, but I'll miss you in Notes.

I know we've had our disagreements in the past, but leave understanding that

Well, it's sad day for GRATEFUL and for Digital.

Sad to see you go Marv, I too have always enjoyed you notes and
perspective. I don't articulate my thoughts very weel some times, but
oftenI didn't need to cause you'd put in a note that would say just
about what I was going to say.

Marv,

Best of luck, but my friend, you don't need luck. You'll do fine.
We've disagreed in the past, but I think we have both learned from
each other...

i've spoke with friends who plan to leave or have left dec and they
say it is like getting out of jail. you become free from this
nightmarish environment. i do hope that you can find something that
allows you to meet your finiancial obligations, etc (ain't that why
we work?)

i won't be here next week to say my last goodbyes, so this is it mon.
we'll see ya on the trails and at slipknow shows. please send or post
your home phone/address... i may call on ya to hike w/ me sometime.

Thanks for the messages and good wishes.

I am just about set to enter the execution chamber (i.e. conference
room) for my paper signing ceremony. This should be interesting. I've
seen the personnel rep that's going to precide a couple of times in the
past few days and she seems more tense and upset than I am. I hope it
goes smooth. I've heard that about 90% of these things turn hostile.
No fear of that from me. I am content and feel free. jc, I think
you've got it right. I'm being liberated.

If anyone is interested in getting in touch or ever needs a witness to
say something like, "He/She was with me and nowhere near the site of
the crime." I can be reached at:

Hey Marv. It's been nice having you in here and it's not fun to see
more people leave, but it sounds like you're happy about your future
prospects and that'll probably make them good. I suspect I'll still see
you around from time to time and maybe next time you can tell me how
great your new job is. Good luck with it all and keep on being you.
