324.12Au Revoir - Another GRATEFUL noter hits the roadGR8FUL::WHITESee SYS$DISK2:[WHITE.PUBLIC]RESUME.POSWed Nov 18 1992 13:5825

It is with great sadness that I announce that I will be leaving
Digital in the next round of layoffs. My last day will be
sometime the week of 7 Dec 92.

This has been very tough, but it is my choice. In a time when
so many are without work, I have two excellent opportunities.
One is in Dallas, an excellent professional opportunity, but
requires me to leave behind people and a landscape that I love
dearly. The other opportunity is in the greater I-495 area.
This not as good professionally, but means I don't have to
relocate. I do not know now which I will choose.

One of the biggest losses in leaving Digital is access to this
notesfile and the close connection to the GRATEFUL community. I
        will miss y'all a lot.

        Peace,
        Bob

For those that might want to keep in touch, I have an account on
The WELL. My internet address is: rwhite@well.sf.ca.usa. I
don't check that account too often so be patient in waiting for a
        reply.

Well folks, looks like this IS a trend.

I'm outta here after 13+ years in DEC. So many feelings. A bunch
of folks have been with me through these last 2+ years of personal
turmoil in my life, and have also shared in some of my successes.
I started in DEC 5 months out of high school, so i feel like an artic
explorer, getting ready to leave base camp.

I'm ordering a dec PC this weekend, and will be getting a compuserve
account. I've been mostly absent from the scene for quite awhile,
but have logged in a few times here and there and am glad to know that
good vibes are still free! I'll be getting folks phone numbers etc,
    and will post mine.

and now....I must have ESP, because about a month ago I started
    executing a business plan for......"Stella Brew"! {gonna make em shine}
I send out mail to folks in note 212, but if you would like a catalog,
    send me mail.

I'll be around till 12/11, keep the faith.

This message is being sent to several folks in the hopes that
it gets through to at least one who can post it to the GRATEFUL
        notesfile....

Howdy from the State of Texas. I've been here almost five months
and I'm liking it a lot more than I thought I would. I'm even
        just plain liking it! :-)

I'm already used to the warm sunny days. And the winter wasn't
hard to take. The most brutal winter day required scraping a
little frost off the windows and noticing that a few of the water
puddles along the road had a skim of ice. Rough, real rough.

Yeah, yeah - we'll see what tune I'll be singing come August!

Work is mixed. The people are generally excellent. I have not
run into one technical person who is a bozo. That is quite
refreshing. Management, on the other hand, sometimes seems to
        make up for it completely.

I am the lead system engineer on a product new to the power
electronics marketplace. We are engineering and planning to
manufacture a complete, line cord to IC, distributed power
system. The work is exciting and challenging and my team mates
are excellent. Even though management made a few discouraging
moves/decisions, so far it has worked out OK.

        I'm in a brand new house: 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 2 car garage
(stacked to the ceiling with boxes %-/ ), 2000 sq.ft. of house,
500 sq.ft. of deck, fireplaces in the living room and master
bedroom, the master bath has the typical his-and-hers sinks and a
big tub with a built in jacuzzi. Right now it's surrounded by
empty lots but I expect that over the next couple of years they
        will get filled.

Dallas is turning out to be an alright place. It is much more
cosmopolitan than I expected. Excellent restaurants, good music
and cultural scene, and a whole lot more Volvos that I would have
        ever dreamed!

But, if y'all want to hear more and perhaps even see some
pictures, we'll have to arrange a DECHead lunch or dinner.
Although I've slipped quietly through the Boston area twice
already, this trip I have enough time to try and meet with folks.

I'll be in the Boston/Worcester area from late the evening of
Wednesday, 2 June through Sunday, 6 June. If someone is
interested in trying to arrange a get together, my preferences
(in order) would be: lunch on Thursday, lunch on Friday, dinner
on Friday. Thursday evening is already taken up by the high
school graduation ceremony of the youngest of my two probable
future step-daughters. And there's a story I'm sure not many
        will want to miss :-)

Would love to hear from one or many... Let me know what's up -
        contact information below.

        Peace & health to y'all,
        Bob

        P.S. to Jeff Strobel et.al. - the DECHead V3 T-shirts are
        excellent!

324.35Greetings from John HambyNECSC::LEVYA song that's born to soar the skyThu Dec 23 1993 10:4956

To:	'Dave Levy' <cscma::levy>
CC:

Hi Dave,

I'm John Hamby, once DECWET::HAMBY, now johnh@asymetrix.com. I left DEC for
good this past June. I hadn't participated in any Notes conferences for many
months prior to departing, so you probably thought I had disappeared long
before that...

I've been almost completely out of touch with the world of late. We get no
incoming TV at home now, and don't take a newspaper, so I tend to miss major
world events. Like yesterday someone told me Frank Zappa had died, just as I
was getting ready to play "The Yellow Shark" for the first time. The cover
photo didn't show him in good health, but I had no idea his cancer had
advanced so far. One more of my heroes, gone. I wanted to talk to someone
about it, and I'd been kinda meaning to drop you a note for a long time, so
howdy. At least in public, Frank was a helluva guy, and I'm glad he produced
as much good music as he did.

I haven't heard any Dead news in all of 1993. How has the band been?
Everyone healthy? Additions to the repertoire?

I hope the year has treated you and yours well, and that the magic glue you
talked about in your how-I-met-her story is still holding. Give my best to
everyone in Grateful!

John

P.S. A good record you might not have heard is "August and Everything After"
by a band called Counting Crows. It sounds like a weird cross between
"Astral Weeks" and the Jayhawks.

Hi Seth,
Remember me? I'm still at DEC, uh, make that Digital. There's still a
GRATEFUL notefile, more-or-less like it was when you were here. Still just
a few of us "old-timers" around who even actually remember you!
I've been reading your LA GD show reviews - very eloquently written, as
always.
Write back!

Just spoke with a former Dechead Randy Switts, he is working
for Data General out of Atlanta, and asked me to post his
work and home phone numbers, he sold his entire Dead Tapes
collection and now is into Dat Trading so if you are also give
him a call Home 404-926-6587, or Work 404-705-2542.

He is working as a project manager in imaging, and loves what he
    is doing.

this is not to post an address, but looked like a sortof good
place to put this stuff - news of old friends:

Got some email from 'noky over the weekend - he's back in
wherever he's from ;-) in the midwest - doing a coop for
NASA - some spacelab project that will "improve life on
Earth" - getting in trouble, but still happy. He's coming
east for that Phish extraveganza and was asking me who
else from here would be there. If you are and want to hook
up with him, let me know and I'll try to remember to get
his address. He'll also be at Bread and Puppet. He also
mentioned that Rich Fromm might be back here for Phish?

I've also been in touch with Bob Bailey - he'll be quitting
his job on August 9th (that date burned into our souls :-( )
and taking the rest of the month off before he looks for
something else. He and Tree and I and families are going
camping in the Cascades - a DEChead West camping trip!
