28.0. "Places to checkout while on tour" by TERAPN::PHYLLIS (Wake, now discover..) Tue Aug 06 1991 22:17

I thought it would be a good idea to use one of the reserved topics as a
space to discuss good places to hangout, checkout, eat, etc., while on
tour. I know we have notes on specific meeting places, bars, etc., but
this would be more permanent - more generic I guess and won't have to
be purged after one run of shows. Let me know if you think it's a bad
idea and I can move it.

    Anyway - here it is!

I thought I'd put together some ideas for places to go to catch good tunes
after the shows, and places for good, cheap eats too. There's a lot of great
local bands, so when it gets closer to tour time, I'll let you know who'll be
where, but for now, here's some cool places to go and the type of music you
can usually find there. I'm not gonna get into the bigger places right now,
that get the bigger names. They're more expensive and IMO, only worth going
to if there's someone specific playing there you want to see. So, for them
we'll wait until the Sept. schedules come out.

Nightingales - 2nd Ave at 13th St. - good rock bands, pool table, cover is
usually $5, can be crowded.

Dan Lynch's - 2nd Ave btwn 13th & 14th - good, local blues, pool table, cover
around $5 also, can be crowded.

Manny's Car Wash - 3rd Ave at 87th - you can catch some great blues men here,
cover is around $3-$8 depending on how great :-), very small place, will be
crowded.

The New Frontier - this is the old Lone Star Cafe at 13th St & 5th Ave. It's
now a TGIFriday's. Once you get over that :-/, you start to notice that they've
been having a lot of good rock, reggae, funk bands, with no cover, and usually
$1 drafts between bands.

Delta 88 - 8th Ave at 26th St. They get a lot of good New Orleans, cajun,
zydeco type bands here. Usually no cover up front, $5 to sit in the back at
a table.

McGoverns - Spring St. btwn Hudson & Greenwich. No cover, gets some good
local rock bands and some weird stuff :-), pool table.

The Pool Bar, Bway at 8th St. - Sometimes no cover, sometimes a few bucks,
I haven't figured out the system yet :-). Some good local rock bands, some
weird stuff, pool table.

Mondo Perso & Mondo Cane - both in the village, both get good local blues,
both have a $5 cover

Here's some places to keep your eye on for more music, but the prices will
be higher: Wetlands, The Lone Star Roadhouse, Tramps, SOBs, the Bottom Line,
the Marquee

Now for good, cheap eats:

If you're just walking around and will stop in somewhere, you're best bet is
the east village, but you can find good meals for under or around $15 just
about anywhere - just gotta poke around. If there's a certain type of food
you'd like and don't see listed, or a specific area of the city, let me know.

Also - if you just want to pick something up and go sit somewhere nice, here's
where some of the best parks are:

Central Park runs from 59th St. to 110th St. between 5th Ave on the east and
Central Park West on the west. It covers over 800 acres. A nice, quiet spot
to check out is Strawberry Fields, at 72nd St. & Central Park West, across from
the Dakota. Most social/hangout spot is Sheep Meadow, at 72nd St. & mid-park.

Washington Square Park, in Greenwich Village at the base of 5th Avenue. This
is far from the prettiest park, but it's the best hangout.

Riverside Park, from 72nd St. to 150something, west of Riverside Avenue. The
best place to catch the sunset.

Carl Shurz Park, from 84th to 88th on the East River (and 1/2 block from my
apartment so come say hi :-)) This is where Gracie Mansion is in case you feel
the need to speak to Mayor Dinkins. :-)

Here's some restaurant ideas:

Veggie/Natural/etc..

  Dojo on St. Marks Place
Yaffa Cafe on St. Marks Place also
Spring St. Natural, Spring St. at Lafayette

Middle Eastern

Mamouns, McDougal & W. 3rd St. - for the worlds greatest falafel :-)
Ovo Cafe, Bway at 22nd or 61st St. & 3rd Ave.

Tex/Mex

Benny's Burritos, Avenue A at 6th St. or Greenwich Avenue at Jane St.

Indian

Anything on Indian Row, 6th St. btwn 1st & 2nd Avenue. My favorites are
   Somali and Passage to India

Chinese

In Chinatown, your best bet is somewhere that looks like a hole in the
wall, down some stairs, with no Americans eating in it. :-) You can get
great Chinese all over the city, especially of the Szechuan variety
(although in Chinatown I think it tends to be Hunan or Mandarin)

Thai

Thailand Restaurant, in Chinatown at the corner of Bayard & Baxter. This
is my new favorite restaurant in all of NYC and the best Thai food I've
   ever had.

Barbeque

Dallas Barbeque, there's one in the village at 8th St. & University, but I
like the uptown ones better (Central Park West & 72nd or 3rd Ave & 73rd)
If you're seated by 6:30, you can get 2 full meals for $7.95
Brothers Barbeque, Houston St. btwn 6th Ave & Varick
  Brother Jimmy's, 1st Ave btwn 81st & 82nd
Tennessee Mountain, Spring St. at Wooster (the way it should be spelled
   everywhere, btw ;-))

Delis

Carnegie Deli (probably the best deli in the world - also where Broadway
Danny Rose was filmed :-)), 7th Ave btwn 54th & 55th. Picture the biggest
sandwich you can, then double it and you begin to get the idea. Definately
made to be split. Or, if you don't want to wait on line to be seated:
  The Stage Deli, 7th btwn 53rd & 54th.

Jamaican

  Vernon's Jerk Paradise, 29th St. btwn 7th & 8th

Italian

If you're around MSG during lunch, there's an incredible Italian place called
Veronicas. Unfortunately it's not open for dinner, though. It's around
38th & 7th Ave. It's cafeteria style.. just big, long tables and you'll
definately have to wait on line, but it's worth it! Delicious, homemade
food, probably cost you around $8.
There's also lots of chain places around the city that have huge menus, pasta
cooked 8 million ways :-), for around $10. My favorite is Pasta Vicci,
   Amsterdam Ave btwn 79th & 80th

Afghani

Khyber Pass on St. Marks Place in the village. If you're a group of 4, call
beforehand and reserve the pillow-table in the window.

Eastern European

Veselka, 2nd Ave at 9th St
  Christines, 1st Ave btwn 12th & 13th, or 2nd Ave at 25th St

Well, unless you're incredibly hungry, that should be enough for starters. :-)
Seriously, if you're looking for something or somewhere specific, send me mail.
I'm sure we've got it.

See you in September!
Phyllis

For a cheap afternoon you could wander around the Capitol building
and Empire State Plaza. Free tours are given through each. That's
where I met my wife. We were both tour guides. There's a bunch of
modern art in and on the Plaza, unless they've done some re-arranging.
Or go looking for the devil in the Grand Staircase in the Capitol
building (modeled after the Paris Opera staircase). Pointers to the

We went to Buddy Guy's Legends a few years ago and had a blast. Great
local blues and 4 pool tables! One of the biggest, most popular local
    spots is Kingston Mines.

    Check out Lake Michigan.

I didn't care for Legends, but I will recommend BLUES and Kingston
Mines, practically across the street from each other on Halstead.
There's good restuarants on Halstaed too (Chicago ranks 2nd to San
Francisco for food, imho). Here's some numbers:

Local acts to check for are Magic Slim, Hubert Sumlin, Big Time Sarah,
    and many more, I'm sure.

Goose Island Brewery is one of the best brewpubs in the country (it's
just off Halstead). The Berghoff is good too, and has two downtown
    locations.

Have fun, it's a great city.

I went to Kingston Mines when I was there about 1month ago or so.  Cool place;
it has 2 stages. While music is cranking out on one stage, the other is
setting up. When stage 1 is done playing, stage 2 kicks in. this repeats
until 4am or so!!!

My wife and I were at Universal Studios park in LA a few weeks back.
We got into the Star Trek Adventure. They pick 30 people to play parts
in the psuedo movie they film. You can buy the video later. My wife
was part of a landing party. I was a Klingon dressed in full costume.
The majority of that costume was foam rubber, so it was pretty damn
    hot.

Anyway, my wife and the landing party beam down to a planet. They
didn't know it, but the Klingons were waiting to attack. We surprised
attacked the landing party. The wife and I got to pound each other
with fake rocks!! Lots of fun!!

>So does this mean that every episode is filmed for a 16x9 screen???

Nope. 'Big' screens only went 'wide' (16:9 or greater) after TV became
a commercial success in the early 50s. Prior to that it was 4:3
    (Academy Ratio) just like TV.

Regardless, some shows look good a big projection screen, some do not.
A lot of recent stuff does not, particularly if it was shot on video.
A lot of 60s stuff looks pretty good, possibly because a lot of the
production staff would have originally come from the film world and
paid more attention to lighting, composition etc.

ST:TOS doesn't look too bad, although it's low budget show through
occasionally. TNG and DS9 look great.

Cool, we were offered that gig but couldn't do all 6 nights requested.
That would have meant 10 shows in 12 days while trying to hold down 40+
hour a-week jobs.

    Chris,

So far we haven't been able to score any tickets (hint, hint) for Sat
nite which is the only show we wanted to go to.

From my last memories of Philly, the Spectrum is on the perimeter of
the city. I really don't know of any places to meet. Even if we don't
get tickets to the show, we'll be coming to town. We have tickets to
see the Barnes Collection at the Philly Fine Arts Museum at 11AM! We
could probably meet up for drinks/dinner etc.

Not heading down to Philly, however points of intrest are many and
easy to get to, via The Broad Street Subway, the Italian market
is almost walkable from the Spectrum around 9th and Snyder.
Atlantic city is only 1 hour away, maybe more if traffic.
