169.0. "Venue Hotel/Camping Information" by AD::VAUK (love will see you through) Fri Jun 14 1991 17:59

Since we all get hotel/camping information with our mail order tickets
I thought it would be a useful thing to keep that information in one
location for easy reference for future tours. Moderators if this is
already else where please feel free to delete/move.

I'll make a recommendation for the Sheraton Mansfield. We stayed there
last weekend for the folk festival. $118 for a night includes the most
incredible brunch you ever saw! About an acre of food. I put on 5
    pounds, easy.

According to my travel agent, the Sheraton Mansfield is now the
Mansfield Host Hotel. $75/night. Not too steep, for Mass.

Sounds like $118/night was a little steep for Mansfield, of course
there's no food included for $75, I'm sure.

My 2 cents..

If hotel prices in Manhattan make your jaw drop, you may want to consider
staying in a hotel in NJ or Queens. I've never been in a hotel in either
location, but I'd imagine they are cheaper than those in Manhattan (although
maybe not much).

I'd prefer Queens, since it's easier to get to (pop in the subway anywhere in
Manhattan and you can get there). Plus, it's my hometown! With NJ, you have
to get to the Port Authority Terminal (reputed to be crime-ridden, even for
NYC!), which is about 15 blocks from the Garden, then get on a bus to NJ, which
may not actually get you to whatever hotel you may be in. I don't know what
kind of mass transit NJ has (especially at night). The NYC subway runs all
night, and you can get to most areas of Queens in about 45 minutes. There are
hotels in Queens in the Elmhurst area (accessable by subway), and near
LaGuardia Airport, although you'd probably have to hop on a bus to get near
LGA.

I stayed in the Southgate and thought it was good. Nice room, had 2
separate rooms, a bedroom w/ a door and the couch folded out into a
double bed. It had a kitchen too.

the price you say? well, ahem, I seem to have forgotten that smaLL
important piece of info.

took the train from BOS --> NYC then from there you walk out, and look
across the street and there it was. didn't even need a cab.

have fun,

Well, here's your first hotel hint: Call American Express corporate
travel: DTN 297-4711. They typically have DEC rates at hotels near the
DEC facilities, and our DEC facility is attached to MSG! If you don't
mind staying on 8th Avenue, you can be close to the Garden & pay around
$85 for a room with 2 double beds. The DEC rate for the Southgate Tower
is $115 and they are diagonally across the street from the Garden.
(Same thing.. sleeps 4 or 5 or 10 and one person airbrushing t-shirts
and 1 German shepherd but that's a story for another time ;-))

Adam's right about motels outside the city being cheaper, and Queens is
probably the place with the most of them. I don't have any info about
    any of them, though.

169.32BTW, do you know how Wehawken got its name? Ask Treemon...BIODTL::FERGUSONthe rainbow does not have a beardWed Aug 07 1991 15:3013
The TreeMon and saw two showz in NYC last year. We stayed at a Flea-Bag in
NJ for $45 for one night and with one of his friends the other night. We
took these vans that go from the Joisey side (Wehawken, NJ) to the NYC port
authority. They cost about $1.75 a ride.

Park in Wehawken on some side street, grab one of the vans (for more information
on the vans, talk to the folks at Ed and Joe's Bar in Wehawken), and have some
fun... the vans run fairly late (midnight at least, I think) so there is time
for one or two pops before ya gotta hit the road.

As for food in NYC, it is nothing but PIZZA for me! Yum Yum.

    FYI....

As Jim said, all Amtrak trains enter and leave NYC through Penn
Station. Though keep in mind delays do occur. Last time I took the
train to Boston, we were stuck in New Haven for over 2 hours. Taking a
train that gets in at 6:30PM might be chancy.

Also, a new budget price hotel just opened up. It's called the
Broadway American, 222 West 77th St, NYC 212-362-1100. They advertise
singles from $45.00. Also check out the Hotel Empire, 44 West 63rd St
212-265-7400 (across the street from Lincoln Ctr). Both hotels are in
a great location, 5-10 minute subway ride from MSG. The surrounding
neighborhood is very safe and you can park your car on the street,
however, it has to be on the right side of the street!! Alternate
side of the street parking rules can be explained at a later date!!!
See if they accept Digital Corporate discounts.

From Colorado Springs you can motor yourself to Las Vegas NM or La Junta CO
and get on board Amtrak's Southwest Chief which will take you to Las Vegas NV
I believe..lots cheaper than flying and a heck of a lot more fun.

I plan to MO for Vegas. If you plan to visit the Casinos and/or
party all night, you should stay somewhere on the Strip although
you have to deal with the cheese factor. Some of the prices I
know of are:

	Dunes $69/night
	Excalibur $59/69 (Fri-Sat), $35 (Sun-Thur)
	Mirage $139/night
	Bally's $85/night
	Maxim $55 (Fri-Sat), $35 (Sun-Thur)
	Center Strip	$64-71 (Fri-Sat), $55-62 (Sun-Thur)
	Barbary Coast	$45/night
	Townhall Hotel	$30 (Fri-Sat), $20 (Sun-Thur)
	Super 8 $53 (Fri-Sat), $43 (Sun-Thur)
	BW Mardi Gras	$42/night

I stayed at the Best Western Mardi Gras last year. It's about 1/2 mile
from the Strip. Every room in that place is a mini-suite with a queen-
size bed and a queen-size hideaway, a wetbar, and a refrigerator. The
one thing the Mardi Gras won't have is the glittery (and cheesy) casinos
and sideshows. Your AAA California/Nevada Tourbook will give you more
choices. Don't forget to ask for AAA rates if you're a member or check
corporate rates. See ya there!

Hi Don,

I am also staying at the Red Roof Inn in the Meadowlands. Just to clarify, I
called the 800 number they have, and they gave me a price of $65.99 for one
double bed. Maybe I should call the number you listed.

O.k. I just called the Red Roof direct, he told me, that they were informed there
is an "event" happening that weekend, so they are able to raise the room rates.
So some of us got lucky with a cheaper rate and some of us have to pay a higher
rate because we booked after they went up! Bummer. Of course, I am in the latter
category. :-(

Now, I just hope I get tix. I didn't M/O on the first day, I sent it in on the
following Monday, so what are my chances of getting tix? I'm hoping I still get
them since the place is so big. Any comments on this thinking???

Thanks,
Kim

I also got the same deal from the 800 number.

I also got a 2-bed room near RFK for $59 (I think). The closest Red Roof (I
think it's in Lanham, about 10 miles from RFK, but all highway driving).

Any recommendations for hotels for the Vegas shows? I haven't been to Vegas

We're staying at the Boulder Statuin, a new hotel on Henderson Highway
about one mile from the stadium (and THAT's gonna be rfb's famous "ten
minutes from the stadium in the Deadcrowd!) We reserved two months ago
and have rooms for $60/nite Thurs. and Sun. and 70/nite Fri. and Sat.

Other places close by are Sam's Town and Nevada Palace (but bot ten
    mins on THOSE days!)
Downtown there is the Golden Nugget, where Marty and I usually stay (we
go to Vegas about twice a year and gamble our life's savings away...
last year I went through a WHOLE ROLL of quarters). the Four Queens
(possibly a little cheaper than most), the Frontier, and the Plaza
    (where the train station is)

On the Strip there are the Excalibur, MGM Grand (and it is grand...
also expensive), the Luxor unless it's fallen down by now, Treasure
Island, Caesar's Palace, the Barbary Coast, and dozens more "too
    numerous to mention"

Off the Strip are the Rio and Palace Station...

This is by no means a solicitation for any of these... get reservations
somewhere fast; you won't believe the crowds for these shows!

One thing to consider is that since these are weekday shows all the
"straights" will be at work until 5pm or so which means pahking in the
local garages and such will be a nightmare! In fact in '93 they didn't
open the garages to DeadHeads until 5:30 - that cuts it pretty close
for me. I remember big headaches on the Monday show in '93 for this
very reason. If you get in at the Ramada, once you park in their lot
you're done as far as travelling to the shows is concerned.
