460.0. "Ophishial Cheap Airfare Note" by ROCK::FROMM (This space intentionally left blank.) Thu Jun 01 1995 18:57

I don't know about the rest of you, but it seems that I only find out about
cheap airfare deals either

	- by luck, or

	- once it's too late.

For instance, I just found out last nite, when I called to check on some fares,
that prices are somewhat lowered now, but will be going up on June 2. i.e.,
if you're planning on flying anywhere sometime soon, make your reservations
by midnite TONITE!

Just thought I'd let people know. And I think a convenient base note for
disemminating this information might be useful in the future.

- Rich

p.s. some good sources of cheap airline tickets, fwiw:

800-451-7200	Cheap Seats	(i usually get my tix thru them)
800-466-8194	Suburban Travel
800-745-8000	TFI
800-777-0112	Student Travel Agency
http://www.nando.net/pctravel.html	PC Travel
	- this lets you get (w/ telnet, or by modem) to the airline ticketing
reservation system that travel agents use

Cheap Seats is terrific! (Thanks again, JC!)

I just booked a round trip to New Orlean (yeah, again. I know) with
them. The best Thomas Cook could do was over $400 - Cheap Seats was
$286. Such a deal...

I use the online Official Airlines Guide, usually accessed through
    CompuServe

    !Go OAG

I have been using the OAG in printed or electronic form since about
three days after the Wright Bros. invented flying...

Usually my travel agent can match the fares I find but once or twice I
come up with fares even she can't find! (I always use Going Places
Travel in Albuquerque... have since about FOUR days after the Wright
    Bros. did their thing)

Wasn't that the day their luggage arrived?

Ah, the anniversary of the invention of the Baggage Retrieval System
(or it would have been, if a critical part hadn't been rerouted to
    Madrid).

If traveling out west, cheep seats is the God. If Digital hired
them to consult, we'd save millions yearly. What would have cost
$500 through T. Cooke, cost me $350 thru cheap seats.

Just called "Myrtle Beach Jet Express" for a 1-way back from South
Carolina in 2 weeks and it was a modest $119. For a one way fare,
    thats not bad.

I've always had good luck getting good rates from Shrewsbury Travel...
I did a LOT of comparitive shopping for our Lake Tahoe trip coming up
in August, and Shrewsbury Travel had the best rate (at the time) so I
booked it... $330 per round-trip ticket to Reno with 1 stop in Denver,
reasonable, rate and good selection of flight times too...

Fares change hour-by-hour, all the time.

I booked a flight from MHT --> ABQ --> MHT, the fare was $549.00. The
same flight two months ago was $302. Gulp, says I. Told my travel agent
to book it and send me the tickets.

Got the ticket yesterday. The fare was $397 -- because the T.A. waited
four hours (on the same day!) to buy the tix!

Nations Air was pretty good from South Carolina. They
have shuttles to Philli and elsewhere for $50

Bargain basement airline, but decent 737's with old motors.

I have fairly good luck with Cheapseats. Only downside is that since they buy
their tix in bulk, you can't use discounts like FF coupons, etc. which I get
from time to time.

My next trip BOS<->LAX will be only $340 on American, NON-STOP (with a $75 FF
discount coupon). American is the only non-stop BOS<->LAX that I know of.
Cheapseats only had $369 with a change of planes each way and non-ideal flight
times on a 'lower-quality' airline. No thanks. I got the American tix by
calling their 800 #.

Non-stop is key for getting ~5 hrs of sleep on the red-eye return, and
American drops the price $20 for the red-eye flight. With a stop, I'm a total
veg on Monday, just like yesterday %-|

And the two times I've flown American on the return non-stop, it's been on a
DC-10 or L-1011 and I've gotten an entire row of 5-seats all to myself!
SCORE!

...or should I say SNORE! :-)

I guess it pays to shop around. I did notice American advertising
round trips to LA in today's Globe, for $299!
