Major Bummer...
A friend just called me up with the news. Apparent heart attack

There was some mention of drug rehab, but I didn't quite get

Sigh...

I agree with earlier reply saying how we should look on
the positive aspects of his life. His voice and guitar will
live forever. He enjoyed his life to the highest level and
gave & got the most out of it. He was an extraordinary
musician who touched millions of lives with his heart, soul,
emotions, and feelings. We should be grateful.

Rock Icon Jerry Garcia Dies at Age 53

NOVATO, Calif. (AP) _ Jerry Garcia, the master guitarist whose
band the Grateful Dead symbolized the 1960s counterculture and
remained a top concert draw three decades later, died today at a
drug treatment center. He was 53.
No cause of death was immediately given.
He was found at 4:23 a.m. by a counselor at Serenity Knowles, a
residential treatment center for drug addiction, said Dan Murphy of
   the Marin County sheriff's office.
A nurse attempted CPR, and sheriff's department staff who were
summoned also failed to revive him, Murphy said.
The Grateful Dead, with its roots in the Bay Area's psychedelic
scene of the 1960s, combined rock, bluegrass and folk influences
into a unique stew. Garcia was lead guitarist, composer and
   vocalist.
Among the band's best known songs were ``Truckin','' ``Casey
Jones,'' and ``Friend of the Devil.'' Its only top 10 hit was the
1987 song ``Touch of Grey,'' with its refrain ``I will survive.''
But the Dead was almost more a way of life than a band to the
thousands of ``Deadheads,'' many of whom followed the group from
   concert to concert.
The band has been the most popular act in the United States,
grossing tens of millions of dollars each year.
``You need music,'' Garcia once said. ``I don't know why; it's
probably one of those Joe Campbell questions, why we need ritual.
We need magic, and bliss, and power, myth, and celebration and
religion in our lives, and music is a good way to encapsulate a lot
   of it.''
The bearded, rotund Garcia had a history of health problems that
caused frequent breaks in the Dead's grueling concert schedule. In
1986, he entered the hospital in a diabetic coma.
He also has admitted past drug abuse.
Garcia slimmed down, stopped smoking and hired a personal
fitness trainer after falling ill with exhaustion in 1991.
In recent years, Garcia also developed a line of colorful
   neckties.
But the years of constant touring took its toll.
``It was a meltdown. Too many cigarettes, too much junk food and
too little exercise,'' band spokesman Dennis McNally said last
   year.
McNally was unavailable for immediate comment today.

Well, I haven't been following the Dead for all that long.
Rich Fromm got me to go to my first show this summer at
Highgate. I've had lots of friends playing tapes for as
long as I can remember, too.

Anyway, referring to .35, I consider myself lucky to have
gotten the chance to see the group. Things will never be
the same again in that area, and I am glad I got to
experience it! It was certainly a mind-opening experience,
to be sure. I've been reading this notesfile over Rich's
shoulder for a couple of years now, and I'm sure everyone
reading this will sorely miss Jerry. Just remember that
he was able to touch new people (like me) until the very
end-- isn't that the most important part of music?

    My condolences...

Sigh... Now I'll never get a chance to take my kids to a Dead show.
For some reason this song has been running through my head for a
while, so I thought I'd share it with you. Don't know if it will
help, but it might put some things in perspective

Let The Mystery Be (Iris DeMent)

Chorus:
Everybody is wonderin' what and where they all came from
Everybody is worryin' 'bout where they're gonna go
When the whole thing's done
But no one knows for certain
And so it's all the same to me
I think I'll just let the mystery be

Some say once gone you're gone forever
And some say you're gonna come back
Some say you rest in the arms of the Savior
If in sinful ways you lack
Some say they're comin' back in a garden
Bunch of carrots and little sweet peas
I think I'll let the mystery be

Chorus

Some say they're goin' to a place called Glory
And I ain't sayin' it ain't a fact
But I've heard that I'm on the road to purgatory
And I don't like the sound of that
I believe in love and I live my life accordingly
But I choose to let the mystery be

Chorus

If you caught the last Northern Exposure a few weeks ago, Iris's was the
closing song, "Our Town"

I believe that "Let The Mystery Be" was a song in the movie Little Buddha

Peace all,
PeterT

I ended up going out to my car and putting in a tape

as ever, the Grateful Dead mysterious magic pervades...
the very first song I started up in the middle of
was Terrapin "storyteller has no choice...soon you
will not hear his voice..." ahhhh the healing power
of words and music and tears...

the tape happens to be of my very first show in '73...
almost one whole side is Dark Star and a very beautiful
one...the leaves fluttered in the breeze to the music...
the ripples of the brook reflected in a dance on the
trees...oh, it hurts so to know I'll never hear those
sounds live again...what I have on tape I'm glad to know
will always bring a smile...even today.

hardly any vocals on the side...until the end... the
very last words "shall we go? you and I while we can?

Yes, this does feel rather like the day Lennon died. That emptiness
when someone you had subconciously thought would always be there isn't.

I went out at lunchtime to get some air. Turned on the news and the
Christian Science Monitor was playing "Truckin'".

Before my first show, various people had been telling me "you have to
go to a Dead show". I had listened to some of the albums. Couldn't see
what the fuss was about. I can't explain exactly what it was that made
the shows such a grate time, but I do know that you can't find it on
CDs, tapes, videos unless you've been there at least once.

It is sad to think that no one will be able to make that discovery

i know it is not quite the right time to bring this up, but, something
to think about.

she suggested that perhaps we should plan a dechead camping trip

if people are game, reply here.
for some reason, the worries of work are secondary today.

    A message from Europe.

I saw the Dead only 4 times (1 in '81, 3 in '91), all in London.
The shows were great, I will never forget them. I recently
joined Digital, found this conference, planned a trip to the US to
see some shows (if I could get some tickets), and then this. I heard
on the BBC nine o'clock news last night and was devastated. You know
its coming, but hope that it never will. I know none of you but my
thoughts are with you all. WE will survive...

Well, I found out in the paper this morning -- front page. Yesterday I was too busy to listen to the radio, watch
the news, . . . I can't believe it.

My son introduced me to the Dead with his multitude of tapes and excited descriptions of concerts. I'd never been
to one, and last summer, he decided that it was important "for part of my education" that I go to a concert. So,
for a grad present to me [for finishing my master's] my then-19-year-old-son stood in line to get a wristband,
stood in line to get tickets, and took me to Highgate '94, explaining everything going on, what song was next,
what to listen for, watch for, ... I/we had a wonderful time -- both the concert and the joy of having him as my
"date".

When my son was 16 and explaining why he needed to do summer tour, I remember he said "Mom, Jerry is going to die,
'cause he doesn't take care of himself, and I need to get to all the concerts I can while he's still alive." He
got to 4 concerts that summer, more since. I'm glad that he did.

Little Feat proved to me how wrong they were to even try.

Seeing the show at Club Casino last night confirmed everything. It lacked.
And that's good...We need to appreciate whats missing. It needs to be

car are my Dead tapes). Then I got into the notes file......

Let me tell you....it hit me like a ton of steel. I broke
down right then and there and it took all I had to keep my
composure (little that did). My supervisor was kind and under-
standing and let me have the day off.

Sooo......I BLASTED the tunes all the way home...sought
comfort from my dear friend Gail (who loves the music but has
never been to a show)...the news saddened her as well....then
went home and taped whatever I could from the various info
stations. My two cats knew something was up and they did their
    best help me.

And while I was sittng there, dumbfounded, it occurred to
me.....Jerry wouldn't have wanted it this way....sure, be saddened
by OUR loss but don't dwell on it too long. Be glad and rejoice
that he has departed this life and is in a far better world than
we could ever imagine. At least that's what I keep telling my
friends to do when I pass on.....

471.101corporate deadhead philosophyBIGQ::DCLARKno, I'm notFri Aug 11 1995 14:5021
Thought I'd add my $.02 here; I used to be quite active in this
conference but have become mostly read-only lately. Sort of in
parallel with my involvement with the Dead and the scene. Since
my third kid was born I've been out of touch. So when I heard that
Garcia died it took a while to really hit me. Even though I don't
see a lot of Dead shows anymore (or any other shows for that matter)
the Dead have made a tremendous impact on my personal and
professional life. As a statistician, I try to approach every
problem the way the Dead played a song; as a rough framework
within which to improvise, with the best work always coming
in spontaneous bursts of inspiration. Deciding to approach
problems this way was a concious effort on my part based on
what I'd seen the Dead do. This same philosophy results in
a disdain for monthly reports and an utter disgust for job
plans (I don't have a direction; I'm going whichever way
the wind blows!). One of the things I've always admired most
about the Dead is that they never had goals or milestones
or any of that stuff; they simply went in whatever direction
felt right at the time. In the process they became far more
successful than any goal-oriented band. Somewhere in there is
a lesson for corporate America :-)
471.102OBSESS::BEAUPREFri Aug 11 1995 15:2622
I'm not sure what, if anything, I have to contribute to this string,
other than to add that I will also miss the big guy.

I haven't seen a Dead show in ages, and now I won't have that opportunity
in the future. Damn. I saw them a few times in tbe late 70's, the best
memories being of the show at Umass, Amherst w/ Patti Smith as the opening
act. You probably couldn't have picked a stanger combo if you tried, but
somehow it was perfect. They were both doing exactly as they pleased with
little regard for whatever emphemeral bullshit happened to be in vogue.
That's one of the main reasons that I always respected the band and Jerry
    Garcia as an artist.

Since those days I've subsisted on the occasional live tape passed along
by a good friend from Oakland who estimates that he's seen the band
    somewhere around 80 times. Whew. My favorite songs were always Jerry's;
"Stella Blue", "Row Jimmy", etc., etc. His voice, even when it was
less-than-perfect (a have tapes from the 80's where it was little
more than a croak), was still somehow sweet and soulful. And his
guitar playing was instantly recognizeable, expressive and ultimately
addictive. Those two unmistakeable elements are what have made me
return again and again to these largely uneven and often muffled
    cassettes.

Well, since you guys want to hear from read-onlies too, I'd
like to share my one experience where I actually saw Garcia
      talk live.

The Dead played on Tom Snyder perhaps 15 years ago. After
they played, Snyder talked to Jerry and exclaimed that he
was really thankful that the Dead were willing to accomadate
their small surroundings. He said all other rock bands just
blasted him right out of there!

Jerry said something to the effect that he really was thankful
      to have the oppurtunity to play in such an intimate setting;
how nice it was to play all accoustic.

He really came off as such a nice guy and a real gentle soul.
      Totally unpretentious.

Yesterday I wanted to wear my tie-dye; but I had a first-ever meeting
with my (prospective) new boss's boss, up at corporate. So I dressed straight.
About 1/2 way through our talks, we were walking by a newsrack, with uncle
Jerry on the front page. My new boss's boss started reminiscing about his
favourite Dead concerts and songs..... I did the same.... it was good.

It's also very good to have this conference to reminisce and share

To quote something Debess said yesterday at lunch that made
    me feel a little better...

"We just have to be so glad that we were alive when he was"

I think this is so true. I'm so sad and empty with the
reality of never again feeling that same kind of magic
that rushed through my body and soul at a dead show...
that feeling of belonging... the excitement... each time
trying to absorb as much as I possibly could to get me
    through the days ahead...

Being a head changed my life in a very powerful way. A
way I don't think I could ever put into words - at least
the words would never come close to the extent of the
experience... I was lacking something before I found them...
and I was filling that void more and more with every
    experience, every show, every friendship...

I feel honored to have been a part of something so wonderful.

I have found a bit of peace is Jerry's death in that he
lived his life as he wanted to... I intend to try to do
    the same with my own...

IMO, if we could touch a fraction of the lives that Jerry did
we will have far outdone our purpose on this earth.

I agree that there was a special magic that rushed through body and soul
at Dead shows. At the risk of being labeled a heretic, I have to believe that a
magic that could touch us all so strongly must transcend any single living
person. Jerry was a great vector for the magic, and we'll all miss him. We
musn't shut our hearts to other ways for the magic to reach us, though, for I
think in doing that we'd do ourselves and Jerry a cosmic disservice. We need
time to greave, and to heal. Then, we can look forward to the quest for the
magic in life. It's got many guises, some of which we'll recognise, and others
we may not, but the ones we miss may show themselves to others. We musn't stop
looking though.

A few years ago I was having trouble with the death of someone very
close to me. Marv MacIntyre posted something (94.861) which helped, and I'd
like to remind you all of it now. "As we live beyond the time of ones we love,
the memories are all that remain so we cherish those memories all the more. The
pain of grief is the twin sister to the joy of rememberances. We can decide for
ourselves which sister to commune with."

I'm only an intermittent reader of this conference...

However, I've been a Dead fan since '74, when Dead albums & concert tapes
were the house music on my dorm floor at Tufts. An entire social scene
coalesced around the Dead. The Dead and related musical interests --
among other things, I heard my first fusion-era Miles Davis with that
crowd, which led to my reconnecting with jazz (then classical, then first
connections with country, blues, and R&B...).

A sometimes-reader of this conference got me to my first Dead show in the
80s, since which I've been to about a dozen more.

I share the feelings of pain and loss expressed by other noters.

In addition to missing his friendliness, humor, and humility...
And his singing and playing (including on steel guitar)...
And the opportunities to introduce new friends and family to live Dead...

I have to say something about his musical intelligence. I always loved
the musical sensibilities of the Dead, and their unique (which is not to
say seamless) alchemy of R&B, country, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and more.
But the more I explore and experience of music, the more I appreciate
  (specifically) Jerry Garcia's musical mind.

If anyone out there missed the dual interview of Jerry Garcia and Elvis
Costello in Musician magazine, consider seeking it out. It's all there --
whether its Charlie Parker or Art Tatum in jazz, or Clarence White in
country and bluegrass, or any of his assorted rock and blues heroes...
Jerry Garcia has wide open ears, recognizes something special when he
hears it, and is *extraordinarily* articulate about it. His sense of
context and history, of what comes from what and connects up to what... I
probably miss him most for these qualities.

But I have to marvel at (celebrate) how many people, like me, he affected
with his musical instinct & intelligence. I know I widened my horizons as
a result of being part of that Dead-centric scene in college (happened to
be losing interest in mainstream rock heroes at just that time...).

And I keep bumping into people who I first met at Dead shows, at jazz, and
blues, and bluegrass, and funk/rap, and alternative shows... - Jay

It's so interesting to remember the poeple and friends made through
appreciation of the Dead. I had friends calling me expressing their
condolences as if it was a family member who died. In some respects in
was. My friends called to thank me for introducing them to the Dead. I
so enjoyed taking people who had never been to see the band to a show.
I just wanted them to share in my enthusiasm and love of their love of
their music. Maybe its the shock of coming to grips with our own
finality but the songs have a new poignancy and lyrics new meaning.
Last night I listened to Jerry singing Dylan's "I shall be released"
and had a tear in my eye. I don't know really know why the music of
Jerry, and the Grateful Dead effected me so. I heard Workingman's for
the first time in 69 and became an instant convert. To this day there
is nothing I rather listen to. I have tapes, CDs and videos to
remember them by but I know that I'll never feel the same excitement.
Maybe that's why I feel so sad.

As I rolled by, they waved and smiled appreciativly. I wanted to stop right
there, get out, and thank them for being who they are. It makes me so happy
to see young deadheads, there are so many other paths they cound have chosen,
and they chose love.

I waved back, smiled even more appreciativly and yelled "Jerry lives on".

Actually, I don't see why they should have their flags at half mast for
this, despite how I feel about Jerry, I don't see that it is
appropriate at all in this case.

I *am* angry about all the talk show crap that I've heard about, where
the hosts are all upset about people honoring Jerry and Mickey Mantle
because of their "alcohol and drug abuse." They refuse to give them
credit for their accomplishments because of these "character flaws."
The media is finding fault with anyone who enters the public eye,
anyone short of perfect is open for criticism.

For centuries, great people had their faults, but now it is not
allowed. Jerry was a great human being, and his life should be
considered a great success. I wish the "media" would recognize that.

Perhaps the flag thing wasnt appropriate. Id agree. But this "old junky"
reference to Jerry, if its true, has no place in the argument. If you
object to some guy in the state house abusing priviledges, take it out on
him, not on Jerry. It gives offense.

Which leads to the deluge of talk show BS and Jerry jokes. It happens.
The human race has its share of brainless sh*tstains. A lot of whom
    happen to be radio personalities.

I don't think it's appropriate to lower any federal or state flags for
this. If the SF town hall wanted to fly the city flag (if they have one)
at half mast then that's fine. Mind you, I'm not against lowering the flag
for this occasion, but I can foresee various groups protesting because if
you do it for Jerry then you gotta do it for just about everyone.

About Clinton, I saw his interview with Tabitha Soren on MTV. The
interview was mainly about the anti-smoking thing that's going on in
society, but she slipped in a question about Jerry. What he said, and what
was not mentioned here yet, is basically, it's a message to all people to
try to fix up their lives before it gets to the point where Jerry was. He
wanted everyone to say to themselves "I'm not going to die that way, I'm
not going to die that way."

well, i haven't been in here in a while so i might as well jump i and

re the half mast stuff... my understadning was that it all started
when Weld was asked if he'd lower the flag and he replied "i'm
considering it"... i didn't think he actually made the request, issued
    the order, whatever...

i agree that nationally, it would be inapporpriate... i like the idea
of the dead flags, but NOT at half mast... as the boys sang "wave that
flag!! wave it WIDE AND HIGH!!!"

as for flying the flags at half mast in SF... i would agree with
that... he was a favorite son in the city by the bay... i think it's
    very appropriate there...

re" the collateral flack.... a lot of folks just don't get it... and

Comes A Time

Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe."
Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
only love can fill.

Been walking all morning went walking all night
I can't see much difference between the dark and light
And I feel the wind And I taste the rain
Never in my mind to cause so much pain.

Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the the dreams you still believe."
Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
only love can fill.

From day to day just letting it ride.
You get so far away from how it feels inside.
You can't let go cause you're afraid to fall,
But the day may come when you can't feel at all.

The words come out like an angry stream.
You hear yourself say things you could never mean.
When you cool down you find your mind.
You got a lot of words you've got to stand behind.

Comes a time when the blind-man takes your hand, says "Don't you see?
Gotta make it somehow on the dreams you still believe."
Don't give it up, you got an empty cup only love can fill,
only love can fill, only love can fill, only love can fill.

Just to clarify, Brent's last show was Tinley Park. Same state (IL), but
different venue. Brent's death did occur at roughly the same time (early
August)., 5 years earlier.

The Star, or one of those trash tabloids, had a headline claiming to have
the last picture of Jerry. I bought it, it looks like it could be him.
It's a grainy picture, and it appears to be a side view of him sitting in a
lawn chair, wearing a white t-shirt and sweatpants. He's looking chubby
:-( He's just sitting alone at a table out on the grass.

I'm waiting for the "Jerry is alive"/"Jerry was abducted by aliens"
headlines to add to my scrapbook. :-)

I guy I know here at work (non-head) just came up to me today and we
had a very nice conversation. He said something to the effect that
since Jerry's death (he's never seen the dead) he's been doing alot of
thinkin about new music and how the kids don't go for the music
anymore, etc. (of course we know some didn't attend shows just for the
music either) and how Jerry touched so many people and they never even
knew it......it's nice to hear stuff like that.

I talked to a woman here in CX03 yesterday whos daughter lives in 217 (zat
right??) Haight...the boyz old house...she went to visit her daughter
the day before Jerry left us (weird or what!!!) neither is a head...but
she was *SO* impressed with the people who came to the shrine in front
of the house. People Mag, Rollong Stone, Spin...all the music rags and
some that were not were in her daughters house taking pictures, doing
interviews etc....she has pictures of it all, shrine, heads, magazine,
etc, and said I can have the
negs for re-prints. As a lot of non-heads were/are, She was *VERY*
impressed with how Jerry touched such a vast amount of different
people. (not being a head, she doesn't have a clue as to how "we" are
all different and yet in the same "family"...but her concern and what
    she was saying was genuine.)

should be some grate pics that we can pass around with the others.

Also a friend of mine that's a DJ in Vail gave me a tape of a
supposedly unreleased interview with Jerry...haven't listened to it

    Some good news people....

Dead video bootlegs are starting to surface. Last Sunday I sat in
amazement as a friend showed me Boston Gahdin, 9/22/91, Set II. I had
forgotten what a good show that was.

I would like to share this one around....it was such a hot show and the
sound is excellent. Jerry is a riot throughout the performance..him and
Bruce Hornsby were on the same wavelength that night as they exchanged
many smiles and bizzare hand signals. Watching this Sunday mourning
was such an uplift. We laughed a lot, as Jerry made many adjustments to
his equipment trying to improvise what he'd be saying to himself...
"Ahhhh, need more envelope filter, mmmmmmm, little more color, Ahhhh".
Ya know? Anyhow, I'll have this on tape next Saturday and would love
to share with those who have the capabilities.

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) _ Jerry Garcia's heart simply gave out,
the coroner has concluded.
The Grateful Dead leader had used heroin within days of his
death at a rehab center Aug. 9, but that didn't contribute directly
to his heart attack, Marin County coroner's investigator Gary
Erickson said Tuesday.
``He was a 53-year-old man with hardening of the arteries,'' he
said. ``This was a mechanical process.''
Tests results indicate that the guitarist's most recent use of
heroin was ``likely from before the time'' he entered the
rehabilitation facility.
Despite a diabetic coma in 1986 that damaged his heart, Garcia
had a difficult time exercising and staying on a diet. He was
admitted to a hospital in 1991 when he became exhausted.
Two of three arteries leading from Garcia's heart had been
reduced to ``a pinpoint'' with 85 percent blockage, Erickson said.
The third artery had 30 percent blockage.
The Grateful Dead has been one of the nation's most popular
concert acts for years, grossing more than $50 million in ticket
sales last year.

471.217I've finally caught up and have a minute to enter thisMILKWY::MILKWY::SAMPSONDriven by the windFri Sep 08 1995 19:2253
Monday it was forecast to be blowing 20-30 knots. Since this is our
honeymoon and was planned as vacation and not a beat you brains out race
we put off leaving for one more day. This put our arrival in Portland (where
we'd visit a friend) off until Wednesday.
Wednesday we began motoring, got enough wind to sail a little in the
later morning, then found ourselves motoring again putting effort into
making shade for relief from the sun. With about 15 or so miles to go
we were able to set the chute and came into Portland while the Wednesday
night racers were on there way out. We watched for Scott since he told me
he had begun racing again. Turns out that the light air and his standings in
the half completed series were not enough to get him out racing tonight.
The pieces just all fell together to perfectly. Had we stuck to our
original plan we'd have been out of touch with the news for another week.
If Scott had raced we might have heard about the race rather than news.
But it all fell together and at about 5:00 PM on August 9 Scott invited us
aboard and we relaxed and talked about things. He said, "Oh did you hear,
Jerry Garcia died?". I waited for the punch line, but it never came.
He told us how he heard about it but it was not a major media news
source, I can hide in denial for the time being.
We walked around Portland, had some beers, some dinner and some more
beers. This whole time I'm trying to not believe, or block out, what he told
us on his boat. But every corner we turn, every band we over hear, the dead
are playing. The second place we stopped for beers I'm beginning to believe
the bad news. The radio is on and every song is a Dead tunes. "What's Become
of the Baby" is not a normal airplay song. I don't say anything, but I'm
beginning to believe the only news of the day.
The next morning I see Scott on his way to work and he tells me that
he has now heard it on the radio. I haven't heard it and am still doing the
denial thing so I can concentrate on our destination and our honeymoon.
After reaching our next destination we take the dingy a mile up the
river. After some really (I mean Rillllly) cool site seeing, gunk holing,
we stock up on provisions for the next few days at a tiny store in Cundy
Harbor. Walking in the door I see a news paper with a familiar face on the
front page. I can't deny it any more. We bought the paper.
We're still on our honeymoon and there is plenty to be happy about.
We're also sailing in unfamiliar water so there is plenty of other things
to distract us and not leave us to dwell on the news. But after putting a
tape in and hearing Peggy O. It really struck me that this was something
I'll never get to hear again live.

Coming back to work after 2.5 weeks vacation the most difficult thing for
me was reading through all these notes and buying the reality. I could only
take it in small doses, but didn't feel that I could skip any notes. So it's
taken a long time to catch up and get through them all.
As for where I'll remember I was when I heard it, I'll always think
of Scott's Boat, Cundy's Harbor and Peggy O in Sebasco. It doesn't overwhelm
the memory of the honeymoon and I'm very happy about that. I have wonderful
memories of great sailing, beautiful coast line, picturesque, secluded
harbors and a great 2 weeks with my favorite woman. But this news was
certainly the worst part of the trip.

I took a lot to buy it,
     Geoff

Yeah, it sucks, but consider the might have beens.

Wouldn't you rather that Jerry died peacefully in his sleep,
rather than in the middle of a raging Stella Blue in front
of 20,000?

It was going to end sometime, and while we wished it
ended latter than sooner, we're kind of lucky it
went as long as it did. Sure I would have preferred
that Jerry lived on into his eighties or nineties and
just did one Farewell concert every year, but that
just wasn't to be.

Things change, things remain the same.
In the beginning, I believe I've read that Garcia,
and possibly Wier, considered Pigpen to be the
heart and soul of the band. The situation is somewhat
different in that Pig took a while to die, slowly
getting sicker, while for all intents and purposes,
Jerry just died overnight. With Pigpen, they
already had a new musician in place who was playing
with the band before Pigpen checked out. With Jerry,
they are going to have to decide whether or not to
continue, or spin off into various subgroups or
just put out live albums based on old tapes for
eternity.

And we'll learn to live with what we have left.

Info on obtaining a ticket refund for cancelled Grateful Dead shows
including info on keeeping tickets as a souvenir.

If you received your tickets for the cancelled fall tour shows
(Boston, MSG, Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore), to get a
full refund of your money (including the service charge) without
getting the tickets back as souvenirs, send the tickets with a
self-addressed-stamped-envelope and name of original purchaser (by
October 6) and enclose a note stating that you want a full refund
including the service charge to:

GDTS Refunds - Fall 1995
PO Box 9812
San Rafael CA 94912

If you want to keep your tickets from a cancelled fall tour show
(Boston, MSG, Glen Helen Blockbuster Pavilion in Devore) as a
souvenir, you need to do the following. Send the tickets with a
self-addressed-stamped-envelope and name of original purchaser (by
October 6) to:

GDTS Refunds - Fall 1995
PO Box 9812
San Rafael CA 94912

(You may want to include a note stating that you want the tickets back
as a souvenir.). The tickets will be returned with a stamping on
back with a likeness of Jerry Garcia; they will not be stamped void.
Note, the $2.50 service charge will not be refunded if you get the
tickets back as souvenirs; only the face value of the tickets will be
refunded.

If you do not send back tickets, GDTS (Grateful Dead Ticket Sales)
cannot keep the money. It will be turned over to the state of
California (eventually). To donate the money to GDTS or to the Rex
Foundation, send a photocopy of the fronts of all tickets and a signed
letter asking for the donation to be made (to either GDTS or the Rex
Foundation).

GDTS appologizes for having to send many mail orders back unopened marked
"return to sender. "

There is a special printing of Hunter's elegy for Jerry that will be
sent out with all refunds. If you want a copy and are not asking for
a refund, you can send a No 10 self-addrressed-stamped-envelope to

GDTS - Hunter Elegy
Po Box 2081
San Rafael CA 94912

Note, tickets were actually printed up for Boston, MSG, The Spectrum
and Devore. Tickets were never printed for Shoreline or Toronto. The
possibility exists that GDTS may try to find a way to distribute the
Spectrum tickets, GDTS ticket czar Steve Marcus reports "But it
may not happen for a while." There have been no announcements about
getting souvenir tickets if you don't already possess tickets to a
cancelled show (as of Tuesday September 19, 1995).
