389.0. "Equipment Stolen at LA Show - Reward Offered" by TERAPN::PHYLLIS (in the shadow of the moon) Wed Dec 29 1993 13:08

***begin forwarded message***************************************

I just got off the phone with Don Pearson of Ultra Sound, and he asked me to
pass this information along to the Deadhead community:

On the third night in LA (December 10), during the set break Branford Mar-
salis took his hat w/ wireless and earplugs and left them near the net
while he played basketball. When he went back to get them, the hat was
 empty.

He played the second set with a spare receiver and a cheap set of earphones.

Healy, Pearson et al. have no choice but to "retire" this frequency and buy
a new transmitter, because whoever has the receiver could record the gigs.
So it's worthless as a piracy device, but the band is out several thousand
 dollars.

Anyone who knows anything is urged to contact Ultra Sound, GDP, or get in
touch with me and I'll get you in touch with Don. Or just put the receiver
and earphones in the mail to Ultra Sound, PO Box 3625, San Rafael CA 94912.

Don offers this reward for information leading to the return of these items:
four tickets to the show of your choice.

389.1Why retire the freq?ESGWST::MIRASSOUOld McDonald was dyslexic. I-E-O-I-EThu Dec 30 1993 05:007
Just curious. Why do they have to "retire" the frequency because
of this theft. I thought that the broadcast frequency was known
already, so why whould they need that specific set of phones for
piracy? Wouldn't any comparable equipment that could receive that
    frequency be just as good?

389.2CSCMA::M_PECKARThat would be somethingThu Dec 30 1993 12:086
The only frequencies which are known to anyone other that the band and crew
are the frequencies for the stage direction, which is different from the
frequency for the monitor sets. The monitor set frequency was the one
conpromised in this case.

I'm not sure, but I think they'd eliminate the specific
frequency for that device, making it useless.

ya but the shows are STILL recorded, no matter what! I guess THAT'S
    the part I don't get?

I think the device would not only enable you to singularly
monitor the instrument/microphone on that frequencey, but
also all the jibber jabber between the band members. Also
if they were to continue to use that frequency, the thief
would probably be able to insert his/her own crap in which
would probably be annoying to the band members.

My take is that yeah, audience recording takes place, but not
every show is available widely as sbd recordings. That's the
	difference.

Jeez, I think I'd rather have the hat.

But, then again, I've always had this thing about hats...;-)
