Conference rdvax::grateful

	Well, I majorly upgraded my PC at home yesterday (from a 286-12 
	to a 486DX-33 for those interested).  This now allows me to run
	several sessions simultaneously using Microsoft's Windows (tm)
	software.  So in this window I'm entering a note in GRATEFUL
	and sending mail to folks that their tapes are ready - in another
	window I'm playing Solitaire :-)

	I have a VS3100 with 500 mb of storage plus 16 mb memory that i will
bring home eventually.....

    
    I have six pints of Guinness in the fridge, and a few more in a box in
    the living room for backup!

	Speaking of beer Meester Russo, I did a bit of beer tasting over
	the weekend with a couple of conni-sewers.   

	Ever taste Belgium's Lambiec Franscoise ?  WOW!  This beer has
	raspberries in it, is fermented with only air-born wild yeast (as
	a homebrewer this is horrifying ;-), comes in a champagne bottle 
	complete with cork, and takes about 3 years in the bottle to mature!

	The most intruiging, strangest beer I've ever tasted, and I've tasted
	a lotta beer.

    It's called Framboise. There's also a cherry kriek that's good. I've
    seen peach but haven't tried it. The yeast isn't totally wild. It's
    airborn and originally wild but it's in a relatively stable
    environment.
    
    If you want some really yummy stuff, look around for a trappist ale.
    They're made in just 6 monasteries, 5 in Belgium and 1 in the
    Netherlands. I've had Orval and one or two others, very smooth stuff.
    Also bottled like wine. Another good Belgian brew is Chimay. Never been
    able to get one myself but it's got a great reputation.
    
    I started a batch of strong bitter this weekend. Also have the makings
    for a Belgian-type ale (with honey) that I'll start in a couple weeks.
    
    My other fun for the weekend (other than yesterday at Canobie Lake) was
    finding a copy of Rocky Horror for only $10. I guess no one wants to
    rent them. I don't think I'd want to clean my living room after showing
    it to a bunch, with rice and hot dogs and toast all over the place.

    I saw some really funky-sounding and EXPENSIVE Belgium beer on the list
    at the OVK, this may have been it......wild yeast, huh? Sounds
    downright dangerous!!! :^)

    They don't add yeast, the beer is fermented by yeast that falls in...
    I'd call that wild (but evidently good) yeast.  They brew in wide *open*
    vats in a room filled with cobwebs (to provide more surface area for 
    airborne yeast), with ventilated roof tiles (open slots all along the 
    rooftop) to let the yeast float in from the outdoors!  [This is according
    to an episode of The Beer Hunter on Belgium.]   I guess we're talking 
    about the same thing, just a difference in the semantics of the word WILD.
    
    I also tried MEAD for the first time.   Now I know why you most people
    drink anything but ;-)

    I've been thinking about a mead recipe for sometime now...
    Think I'll try a raspberry mead, with Colo Clover honey.

    I made some blackberry mead last year. After almost a year in the
    bottle it's starting to get good. I want to make another batch this
    winter (made 3 different types so far) but may go for spices instead of
    fruit. I tasted some "Scarborough Fair mead" a friend made. It was
    really good. Spiced with parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

I've also started playing a good ol' character-cell game here at work, that
I haven't played for five years or so ... Empire.

Of course, I only play it during lunch (11:45:00.00 -> 12:30:00.00) and after
work.

    BLACKBERRY MEAD!!!! sounds yummy...I'll pass on the spices, might try
    some herbs though %^)  I've heard of some homebrews with tiny pieces of
    paper floatin around in 'em too...somekind of contaminatiobn I've
    heard.

    It's a character cell Star Trek game that just came out.  It put's you
    in the command seat!

    I played golf this past Sunday at Shattuck Inn in Jaffrey ..great new
    course and only six minutes from the house...had seven pars and
    it was absolutely gorgeous with the views of mt.monadnock...and
    for my other fun i started replacing the hardware on my garage doors.

 I had fine time indeed Friday night at the White Horse, a fine Saturday during
which I celebrated my youngest son's 9th birthday and ate too much pizza,
and a quiet Sunday playing guitar, a brief visit from a fellow noter, and
an enagement later in the day that was cancelled enabling me to just kinda
hang around and not do much but wish whoever it was that had their laundry
in the machines ahead of me would hurry up and get done so I could do something
besides sit around the apt waiting for their laundry to get done..

Well, the laundry fairy did make an appearance at about 5 PM when it was 
decided that whatever it was that was in the dryer had been there long enough
to dry...and if it wasn't dry yet after 2 hours in the thing it wasn't my fault.
So I did remove it from the dryer (it was dry) and toss my stuff in..Something
had to happen cuz I knew I was in competition for the dryer with another guy
that was pacing around waiting for the stuff to dry...so it was time for
ACTION and I acted....:^)

    I've been spending my time deciding on whether to take the buy out or
    not... and decided not. 
    
    I am plannign to see the Allman Bros this weekend at Lakewood
    Amptheater...  Little Feat is opening for them.... should be hot...
    
    
    PLan to record it, after hearing how good the Allmans were at Holman 
    Stadium... (great tape of that show) I figuered I should go and
    record it..... plan to use a SONY D/3 DAT with a 3 gun mix, NAK's
    and a 421 Sehnieser (great voice mic)  None of this is mine but I have
    access to it....
    
    I also need to take some time to rebuild my system at home... I have a 
    VS3600 with 32 MB memory and 2 GB of storage, a KFQSA port for a 
    R215F expansion cab, an RRD40 disk reader, and a VT340 so I can dual 
    port to the VS or to my Modem.    Looking into buying a 386 PC so I
    can buy a cheap scanner and OCR package and use PATHWORKS to transfer
    info to my workstation.... should be fun setting it all up....

    Halfway through the tour, the Allmans decided to allow recording.
    That's what they get for hanging out with Bear. ;-)

A couple of weekends ago we went rock climbing in Eleven Mile caynon. 
Clipped into 'Staircase' a couple hundred feet above the canyon floor with a 
view that was simply INCREDIBLE!! Such a grate day that even falling was fun!

    Play, play, play....what a play-type weekend! Got into Alma Friday
    nite just in time for one set from Southpaw at the AOB (Alma's Only
    Bar, which is Alma's Other Bar now that the South Park bar has moved in), 
    a local band from the South Park region, all original tunes, 
    sorta Firefallish, Allman-like.
    Snoozed good that nite....
    
    Sat. was a scorcher! high 80's in the
    high-country, we heard high 90's here in Colo Springs! Did a tour on
    our borrowed mountain bikes, then blew up the raft and took my youngest
    daughter and her friend to the Salamander pond/swimming hole. 
    It was just windy enough to keep the
    skitters away (they don't call it Mousquito Gulch fer nothin!)
    Even though it was 85 degrees, the water was only a couple of degrees
    above freezin! or so it felt. It was cool to have a rubber raft to
    cling to or just dangle your feet over the edge, I did most of the
    paddlein, but the kids got into it too. Fishin on the South
    Platte isn't very good so far  this year, that evening, after the sun
    went down and the temps started to drop, I caught only 2
    small brookies in fast water, my normal beaver ponds were totally
    unproductive. 
    
    Sunday morning I hit the ponds by 9 am, hooked but missed 6 fish 
    but managed to hook and land a nice 14 inch brown, 
    (Ok so maybe she was only 12 inches) a grate barbecue and then back to
    the swimmin hole with the rubber boat, then another grate barbecue and
    beers, one last beer in the AOB, and time to head for the city...Patty
    drove, Got back in 'bout 9:30 pm. A beautiful, nice, family type
    weekend
    But too damn hot!

    last week when we were up there...the "tone" between the 2 towns wasn't
    quite as congenial as this article portrays it to be, one thing...there
    are more Deadheads in Alma than Leadville!!!! Bob Ensign in this

	ALMA, Colo. (AP) -- High in the Rockies, the fight between a
small city and a tiny town ended in a draw: Both get to share
bragging rights about their loftiest claims.
	The opponents in the battle for the title of highest city in
North America were Alma, population 160, and Leadville, population
3,100.
	Leadville, about 15 miles west of Alma, had long claimed it was
the highest incorporated municipality on the continent. Then last
week, it declared its official altitude was 10,152 above sea level.
	Alma contested the claim, saying it sat 10,355 feet above sea
level.
	Then Leadville found a spot within city limits at 10,430 feet.
	Not to be outdone, Alma officials took a closer look at their
own survey maps.
	``It got our dander up, and when the dander's up in Alma, it's
the highest dander in North America,'' said town board member Bob
Ensign.
	The maps recorded one measurement at 10,578 feet, putting an end
to the height war. Leadville would have to annex a mountain peak to
outdo Alma.
	Alma residents proved to be sporting winners, extending a peace
offering to Leadville neighbors by claiming only to be the highest
``town'' in North America.
	``That's great,'' said Cathy Patti, Leadville's director of
economic development. ``They are the highest town, we are the
highest city, and we can both live with that.''


    
    

	This was in the boston globe too i think!  deb was reading it and
said who do we know in Alma?  i asked if the article was about the highest
town dispute, and she was surprised that i guessed it (i rememebr rfb talking
about this in the past)...  anyways, i also told her that rfb has a place
there....

    so a friend of mine who can't seem to make his mind up where he's goin
    this summer, Vegas, Eugene or Washington, comes over this weekend to
    ask for the direct # ticket%^&$%$%* uses, 520-9090. so i call a wrong
    number and when the lady says "hello" I ask when the tixs for grateful
    dead in las Vegas go on sale....she chuckles a little and says "this is
    the district offices of School District X in Colorado Springs..we
    only sell Metallica tickets here". she and I busted up laughin big
    time!!! ...a funny moment

    Spring has sprung on what little bits of prairie are left around 
    Colorado Spgs. The area on the west side called the mesa still has
    large areas of private and city owned land left natural. We walk our
    stupid dogs there. After the almost weeks worth of rain last week, the
    indian paintbrush, pasque, and other wildflowers are blooming like
    crazy. Literaly millions of wild onions blooming; if we didn't already
    havea yard full of onion and garlic chives, I'd a been harvesting! We
    managed to find our patch of wild asperagus before all of the stalks
    bloomed. We were able to eat three stalks raw; two about a foot long and as
    big-a-round as a nickel! The third was more your normal size wild
    asperagus stalk, like a pencil. But there were over 20 stalks this year
    that had already bloomed, making them inedible, but garunteeing an
    even larger batch next spring...if we can find them in time. The scrub
    oak leaves are just coming out, shiny reddish baby leaves so soft to
    the touch. Robins, Meadow larks, all kinds of birds back in full force
    now, singing their lungs out form 4 Am till 9pm every day. Cottontail
    bunnies diggin holes to have their litters in, driving the dogs crazy
    as the bunnies so easily lose their dumb asses amongst the scrub oaks
    and maples that seem to grow only on the top of the mesa now.

    yeah thanks rfb,  what trying to get me more homesick than I already
    am?   I love Colorado and the spring wildflowers are just about as

Well, this'll help, mark:


	The Cormorants are back on the Wachusett. They like to perch on top
of the telephone poles which line the rt. 140 causeway the crosses the
Stillwater Basin right behind my house. They stretch their wings often and
hang them there in a vulture-like pose. In the water, from a distance, they
look very much like loons, and just thinking about loon calls brings
thoughts to my head of primal times, when then loon may have been the
symbol for the tribe of cavemen airheads I may have descended from.  :-) 

	The Maples have finished dropping their flowers and the piles of
flowers which were pushed together by winds are all ready starting to rot
from the last three days rain. The dandylion seed puffs are everywhere in
wake of the same rain and in some places it looks like its snowing because
they are so thick. 

	On my commute into work I pass a Great Blue Heron rookery on Rt 2,
where the state says 26 nesting pairs have been counted this spring.
Occasionally, I see one hover over the highway with its 6 foot wing span
and crawed neck, then I swerve when some idiot with a cellphone in one hand
and a coffee in the other cuts me off going 85 miles per hour. I relax and
swat black flies that streamed into the car when I opened the door for
three seconds while getting into the car that morning. Then, before I know
it, I'm at work. 

Then again, maybe it doesn;t help!  Sorry Mark! :-)

Sometime over the past two weeks, my yard exploded.

White mountain laurel, purple lilacs, rododendrons and wild flowers
are everywhere.  With a little luck, I'll get out there this
weekend and straighten up - but it's amazing how much of a mess
was hiding under all that snow.  I know, the snow melted a month
ago, but I've been busy..;-)

No fireflies yet, though.  I think it's black flies, fireflies,
bloodflies (aka mosquitoes), and then the malathion man goes
belching by and wipes them all out.  The fireflies are neat, 
though - my yard has some wetlands, and they swarm in the evenings
by the thousands...

Can't wait to go out and sit around the shanty, and put a good
buzz on...(every night and day)....;-)

    Another young black bear walkin the streets of west Colo Springs last
    weekend, just afew blocks from our house. DOW darted and released him. 
    
    The Forest Service is no longer maintaining garbage pickup on the top
    of Wilkerson Pass (the pass that lets you into the east end of South
    park, one of 3 upland parks in COlO, Tumbledown is on the west end of
    the park) because of the bear problem. Seems 
    a black bear walked right into the womens restroom, (more of 
    an outhouse than restroom, but not quite as primitive as 
    Tumbledown's outhouse,) fortunately there were no women using 
    the facilities at the time. 
    
    Friends of mine were checkin out some mines up the road from
    Tumbledown last weekend and found some LARGE bear tracks in a muddy
    area. Took some pictures of their hands next to the tracks for
    comparison. 
    
    over 30 bears destroyed in the state this summer so far and I'm sure
    more to come as fall comes on...thanks to the stupid voters in this
    state that approved no baiting of bears ("hey, where's my chicken and
    sweets that are always here every year? Well guess I'll head into town 
    and find a garbage can or a womens restroom.") and hunting bears with
    dogs. ("Here come those stupid dogs again, watch me lose 'em in this
    stream.")

    Started with  SHAKEDOWN STREET Friday nite at the bar 3 blocks from 
    my house. a fantastic Jack Straw with one of those "really tore it up!" 
    jams in the middle. Eyes was good too. The flash flood that swamped
    Hoot's bronco filled the entire street outside the bar!! 
    
    A late start Sat to Tumbledown where i took a coupel of kids fishin at
    the swimmin hole (WAY! to cold for swimmin now!) where they caught
    quite a few small brookies. 
    
    Sunday, I went down to the South Platte and came
    back with 2 nice browns, a rainbow and 3 nice brookies. Had a BIG brown
    snap my line on my ultralite!! The rest of the crew spent the day
    4wheelin Mousquito Pass. I also spent an hour tryin to find Arti the
    a**hole cause he's afraid to ford the river and get his lowrider butt
    wet! So he ran all the way back to the shallow part, a mile up stream,
    where he thought he could wade across without having to swim...that's
    where i found him contimplating his crossing...so I threw his ass in.
    
    Monday was very laid back, a little checkin out the cemetarys, ghost
    towns and mines that were easily accesable. Then got in line with all
    the weekend travelers for the long trip back. 
    
    Ate like a horse all weekend long ( killer breakfasts that included
    fried potatoes, trout, ham, sausage, bacon, eggs, toast, and lots of 
    ginsing tea) and did my fair share of beer drinking too.

    Sounds like a grate Colorado weekend rfb.  I did the new england bit.
    Went to rhode island friday night, ate seafood. Went to the beach
    Saturday morning.  We all had a ball jumping in the water and walking
    all the shore of Misquamicut.  Went to Watch Hill for lunch and ate 
    seafood.  Cruised back to Hudson Saturday evening.
    
    Went to Rindge NH Sunday morning.  Took the dog swimming again in the
    lake.  Hung out till 4:00 then off to Hampton for Southside Johnny and
    the Asbury Jukes.  Fun show thenn headed back to Rindge.  
    
    Good but tiring weekend.
    
    	

    Another grate weekend in the high-country!
    
    Hoot, Hoolie and I left late Friday nite, so by the time we cruised
    thru South Park and into the Tumbledown area it was dark. Didn't
    realize the COLORS! were even there till the next morning! The Aspens
    and willows are blazin! Spent the morning on the river and I came out 
    with 2 fat browns about 11-12 inches and 4 fat brookies. Had brats imported
    from Ohio for lunch, did our desert and hit the swimmin hole for the
    little brookies. This swimmin hole is way over populated so I don't
    feel bad about takin 10-15 8 inch brookies for breakfast. By this time,
    with the sun up in full force as well as us, the oranges, yellows and
    reds of the aspens were almost TOO FREAKIN MUCH!!!!! 
    WHEW! was a common expression of the day. Towards evening Hoot took off
    to do a bow hunting trip, he saw lots of fresh sign, but no animals
    other than the young lion that was watching Hooli and I fishin at
    the swimmin hole. We never saw it, but Hoot saw it twice! Which is
    rare. Steaks and chicken for supper and too many beers. 
    The next morning we hit the river again, this time cincentrating more
    on the beaver ponds than fast water. I got 5 more 12 inch fat brookies
    and 1 brown. All went into the freezer for future ski trips, except the
    15 little ones from the swimmin hole which we had SUnday morning
    panfried with taters and eggs.......mmmmmmm, mmmmmm, good!!

then havta mop the mud off the floor - now if I could just convince the wife
that there's also plentry of room for her yapping piece of fluff to stay

on a side (bummer) note, looks like we've lost both our cats to the owl 
this past week...

    -1 What did the Owl do to your cats?

	not to answer for glennnnnn, but owls prey on small four legged
	critters: mice, rabbits, and sometimes cats. when they're hungry
	they'll eat what comes across their path.

coming back from portland OR (business TRIP), i got to pass thru bozeman MT
to visit dave weiss.

had a cool time ..!!! drank tons of excellent micro brew for cheap
prices (2.50 / pitcher special at one place!)... went down to yellowstone.
wondered around the hot springs.  then, we cruised into this river where
a cold-water river meets a hot spring river.  it was excellent.  you kinda
move around until the mix is just right, then kick back, and watch the
beautiful scenery.... we stayed in the natural 'hot tub' for 3 hrs, then,
headed back to bozeman for dinner and drinking and dahts and pool...
bozeman mt is definitely a cool place.   dave seems very happy there. he's
able to ride his bike to all the bahs!!

I gotta get me an owl.

You'll need a Great Horned Owl, Tim.
But be carefull. It mite come after you, with
tallons sharp as knives and strong as a vise.
I know a raptor rehabilitator with scars to
prove it.

An Eagle is the only thing bigger than a 
Great Horned. And they eat fish.  ;-)

You bet!  My bro-in-law found one on the side of the road which had
slammed into a truck due to a wind tunnel effect.  It was in winter,
and it was frozen, but in excellent shape.  No damage at all. He's 
having it stuffed and is donating it to the local high school (for
one thing you can't have a stuffed one in a home). 

This bird, or raptor, was incredible!!  It had _hands_ that were tough
as leather, only slightly smaller than my own hands!, with gripping effects 
like sandpaper, and loooong sharp talons.  It could easily grab a cat.   
A dog would have to be a small one though.  Its eyes were spooky. 
*Huge* pupils.  What an animal!  I'd love to see one at night.  

I once saw either a barred owl or a female snowy owl in my yard, perched
on a tree eyeing my bird feeder.   The same bro-in-law has a bird feeder
and goes through at least 50 lbs of seed/week.  Often a hawk will swoop
down and pick off a bird...

I believe it is a great horned owl that's been lurking around our neighborhood.
I've seen it several times now - standing (sitting??) around 2 to 2 1/2' tall 
with approx 4 to 5' wing span -- grey in color with what looks like little tufts
on the ears.   Really cool bird to check out at relatively close range.

 I won't miss the litter box problem, but somehow I don't think I'll be able to
coax the owl into de-mousing my basement this winter... Wish there was a way to
discourage it from hunting our cats (or my wife's yipping piece of fluff - aka a
poodle)  -- that is without breaking the law.. 

I know owl sightings are believed to be a symbol of death, and I'm
reluctant to mess with it... 

Maybe if I get a whole bunch of kittens maybe a couple will last the winter :^0

	I have a friend who's a raptor caretaker. She has many birds,
	including a Great Horned, Barred owls, the little ones (the name
	escapes me right now, Sawetts??) plus she has a Golden Eagle and
	she owns a Red Tail Hawk which she uses for hunting (she's a
	licensed falconer). She often takes her birds to libraries,
	museums and schools to teach youngsters. You get to see the birds
	up close and they are amazing birds. If I hear she'll be in the
	area I'll let you know. It's a lot of fun.
	
	She also takes the feathers and replicates authentic Native
	American artifacts, such as headdresses and such. In addition,
	she is an artist and does ink drawings of her birds which she
	sells to support he rehab job. She's a grate lady and her shows
	very interesting.

    Patty and I took Wed and Thurs off...just couldn't take the stress
    anymore and we knew this would be the last week of colors above 10,000
    feet. Didn't see any owls but tons of red tail hawks all over the
    mountains and South Park. Had one fly beside the Bronco II for 50
    yards, right outside the window, doin about 35-40 mph. 
    
    Checked out a new pass, Breakneck Pass, in the Donky II...beautiful
    reds, yellows, golds, oranges....unfreaking believable!!! the aspens
    down here close to the city a just starting to change, by next week,
    most above 10,000 feet will be gone...fall will have fallen

Took the Fam up to rfb's place over the weekend -- the colors 
are raging!!  things are really flared up!!!

I'll tell ya though, taking a 1 yr old anywhere that hasn't been
"baby-proofed" can be quite a challenge - we tried to leave eveything
just as we found it - but we had to move a couple things outta reach of Travis.

drove up there Fryday night with all the touristos and unpacked and settled in..
got up early Sat am to frost covering everything - hit the "swimming hole" to 
do some fishing -- saw some little trout and got a nibble or two on a fly -- 
but didn't catch anything -- drove in the woods checking out the colors most of
the day and took our daughter Natalie fishing around dinner time - she
caught a 7" brookie in the stream below the swimming hole and let it go -- Dad
still didn't catch anything :^) -- had a great taco dinner and watched the moon
come up over the aspen covered hills to the east - quite a beautiful sight!

Next morning I went fishing AGAIN ;^)  --- (beginning to think I better hang
up the fishing poles and stick with kayaking and mtn biking ;^) -- this time I
did catch a nice 9.5" rainbow in the stream just down the street from
tumbledown -- Whew, at least I wasn't skunked the whole weekend ;^) 

saw a few red-tail hawks, aome HUGE black birds that look like crows kinda -
but man, they were big, some deer, and a good-sized beaver (the first one
Natalie has seen other than TV - she was pretty psyched :^) 

got home last night and after unpacking Danielle and I killed the greater
portion of a box of cheap wine while unpacking and just hanging out watching
the almost full moon rise over the eastern horizon :^)  Harvest moon coming up
soon!

A really nice weekend -- thank you rfb and Patty!!!  :^) 

I'm ready to head up again in a month and help stock up on wood for x-country
skiing this winter!!!

all you guys ravin' about colo!  sounds excellent!


here in N.E., the leaves are starting to turn.  deb and i were camping in
mid-NH at our fave state park in the middle of beautiful back country, some
of the finest i've seen in the state (untravelled, unknown, and wild).
the maples are the most glorious 'cuz they crank out 2-4 different shades
before finally falling.  now, not all the maples are in tune w/ each other,
so, you might have one maple turning red, the one next to it yellow, and the
one next to that greenish yellow, and the one on the hill orange.  nmeedless
to say, the contrast and colors can be quite intense!  put that together
with a body of water, a cool, crisp 45F sunny day with wind, and you have
my version of heaven on earth for fall colors.  we're still a ways from peak
in the boston area.  my predictions for color peaks are:

	northern NH:	this week and next.
	mid-NH:		first week Oct.
	MASS		first week Oct - 2nd week.

    we have the "bodies of water" here too, but at this time of year it's
    way to freakin cold to get in 'em! but as long as I can throw a worm or
    fly into one and have those colors reflecting in 'em too....I'm happy!!
    ...except it all goes too fast  here....

promos out!  kinda funny.

Grate Colorado weekend up at rfb's place at tumbledown!  Left early on Friday
with a case a beer, many tapes, a chainsaw and a coupla dogs - found myself 
drinking cheap beer throughout a real nice ride up to Alma -- some aspens were
still holding onto few golden leaves, spotted a herd of deer, the buffalo off
in the distance, and some antelope... After arriving I went WAAAaaaayyyyy
overboard killing a bunch more cheep beers, then went out and spent all my
money playing pool and drinking Red Lady Ale at Alma's Only Bar - passed out at
some unknown hour and woke up at 10:00am!!!!  I haven't slept that late in
years! RAGIN' HANGOVER! but (with sunglasses) it was a beautiful day, approx 3"
of snow covering the surrounding pines and mountain peeks -- rfb, the
tumbledown host with the most, got me going with a cup-o-java and some good
chow - we went out an got a couple loads of dead Aspen - ate again, attempted
another beer, and well, then I was back asleep from 4-6pm %^} the rest of the
night we took it easy and RELAXED in a big way - some quality couch time with
tunes and stories of South Park CO.  To bed early and woke back up on Sunday to
yet another fresh dusting of snow -- beautiful morning - packed up and came
home. Phew! gotta pace myself better next time!

    Halloween was a wondeful day to stand in line for the Denver tixs
    lottery. Hoot, myself and Tom Lawlor managed to upgrade our seats
    considerably...but not as well as others I found out later in the
    day...one friend grabbed #1 at the AirForce Acad Tix outlet and got 4th
    and 10th row BBB, plus somewhere else on the floor...grrrr...just
    wasn't our year for tix, either mailorder or in line...BUT, we do have
    fair to middlin seats all 3 nites behind the tapers...and a bunch to
    dump...then beers and phillysteak subs and an afternoon in the sun with
    more beers.....then all the littleones in costume!

I'd like a pointer to a bicycle shop with low prices.  I want to buy a couple of
city/mountain bikes for Christmas.  Thi is what I think I want:

	- city/mountain bikes (strong enough to ride on dirt paths)
	- grip shifter
	- quick-release front wheel

I suspect that what I am looking for is one step above an entry-level bike
in a reasonable line of bikes.  A Cambridge bicycle shop has what I'm looking 
for for $269ea.  The question is: could save much by going to a shop in southern
NH (saves 5% sales tax at a minimum)?

    did some light skiing with Divide Dave around
    Orphan Boy Mine at the base of Loveland Mountain (no where near the
    town of Loveland) on saturday while Tom Lawlor and Glennnnn went near
    the top. Snowed all day, the conditions were great. Tom said "it don't
    get no better than that on Loveland Mt." Then back to Tumbledown for
    venison stew and beers, off to Breckenridge for a pitcher of Avalanche
    Ale followed by one of Imperial Ale and nachos  at the Breck 
    brewery, then to Shamous Otoole's for hours of dancin *crazily*
    to the sounds of Shakedown Street. Back to Tumbledown about 3am, pizza
    from Fatty's in Breck, and ZZZZzzzzzzzzz till about Nine Am Sunday. 
    Delerious drive back...had to stop for food in Lake George. Passed out
    watching the Simpsons, the last thing I rememebr was Burns laughing at
    the Green Peace people for fooling them into thinking he was Wavy Gravy
    and showing them his bong saying "and I've been smoking regular tobacco
    all this time! Ah HAhAhAHAHA!"
    
    way too much fun...a grate base finally in the back country....65-70
    degrees here on the front range all this week though, hope the base dosen't
    turn into spring run off this soon.

      Here's to the the first REAL weekend of summer in COLORADO!!!!
    
    So, what do I do? GO SKIING!!! Patty and I parked the old Scout (been
    imobile for 2 years) at 11,800 (altimiter in Scout). Put our skis on
    our backs and hiked up to about 12,500 ft. with Arthur the Asshole and
    Cosmic Kady. I did about 10 runs with big wide parrallel turns, no need
    for telemarks although I did do a couple of "fake" ones. Patty did 4
    runs from edge to edge of the snow field. My skis must make the same
    high freq. sound as the lawn mower and vacuum cleaner do, cause Arty
    chased me and tried to bite my ski boots on every run. Fortunately,
    he's a slow skier (but you should see him tobogan down the runs!!) 
    This snow field was sorta steep, but dropped off *REAL* steep halfway
    down, so we stayed on the upper part until time to leave. Patty took
    her skis off and walked down the tundra with the dogs. I, like the fool
    I am, did the whole snow fieled down, falling and twisting the &*#@ outa
    my right knee. Packing it in snow and ice helped alot!!! But still
    Sunday I could barely walk (not too bad today, but no skiing, hiking
    or love mak....WAIT A MINUTE!!!! OK, no skiing or hiking for a while
    and dancin at Shakedown this weekend will be, errr subdude...%^) )
    (I like that...subdude....) I also did some flyfishin with my dad's old
    8 1/2ft. Pfluger rod and reel, got alot to learn about REAL flyfishin
    still, but managed to catch a few small brookies at dusk both Friday
    and Sat evenings (Sat before the knee swole up) Nothin like crammin
    winter and summer into one weekend!!!!!!

    Fairplay, known as Fair-lay during the ladies run....Divide Dave, his
    girlfriend Julie and their friend Karen rode up Sat and stayed with us

    i have a friend who just started a 3 year cullinary school run by
    Keystone. She's  attending  school this summer in Keystone, will work

    I needed this weekend bad. Did my mind and soul (not to mention my head)
    real good. Went to a party Friday nite for a friends son who is getting 
    married. A Blue/grass/country/folk band, called Just Another Roadside
    Attraction, played for a couple of hours. 
    Towards the end I requested "some dead"... NFA-->GDTRFB sounded real
    good! It rained real hard and there were minor flash floods. I just
    happened to turn and look down at the dance floor once and there was a
    6 inch Tiger Salamander crawling across it, flooded out of it's hole
    I'm sure, and looking for higher ground. I was the hit if the party with
    all the kids and girls (women, too), walking around letting everyone
    feel what a salamander feels like. (no crude remarks here)
    
    The next morning we had to get up early, pick Hoot up, and head to the 
    Wet Mountains down by Westcliff for a wedding in a meadow...just
    beautiful! The ceramony was so sweet, with the Apache weding vows
    imbedded in the ceramony. A keg af Laughing Lab Scottish ale, coolers
    full of homebrew, wings, tenderlon and loin strips cooked in the fire
    under a foot of hot coals.....and we listend to as much Jerry as we
    could....

    Went and picked up my eldest, Tiffany, at Mission Wolf last nite
    again...she skipped school for a week to go live and work with the
    wolves for her third time this summer. Got to go inside one of the
    enclosures again and scratch and play with 2 5 month old pups, a 2 year
    old female and a 4 year old *HUGE* white female. way cool. The pups
    were out of control! Jumping on you, biting yer nose, ears and pulling
    your hair HARD!, until the Alpha female, the huge white one, would come
    over and growl at them as if telling them "BEHAVE!" (talk about 
    a growl, too!!!!!)
    One pup was pure black (Merlin) and Guiness was the
    typical timber wolf color. The 2 year old female was red and black. 
    AFter about an hour of petting and talking to, the pups finally
    mellowed out and just sat around and got as much scratching as they
    could. 
    
    As we were leaving the area, which sets ina aspen grove ina  small
    valley, all 50 wolves starting holwing at the moon...one old female
    (9yrs) that her pack has kicked her out is really lonely and starts the
    howling usually....she did and everyone else joined in! The sound of 50
    wolves of all ages echoing up and down the valley brought this huge
    smile to my face (not to mention goose bumps all over my body!)
    ...Patty looked at me and said "waiting for that weren't ya!"
    
    Tiffany's big hilites this trip -- she got the pleasure of helping to
    butcher a horse for the wolves to eat....and soaking in the wood fueled
    hot tub (actually a horse tank they build a fire under)
    
    also a bear hanging around Mission Wolf but we didn't get to see it.

    My youngest (15 yrs) , Lindsey, and I went on our first solo backpacking 
    trip together this weekend.  Got a late start Friday nite, hiked with
    flashlites 3 miles in on the Platte Canyon Trail following the South
    Platte River out of Lake George Colorado. Kind-a spooky under a sliver
    of a moon, knowing the bears and lions were out hunting. But I figgered
    flashlite would scare any off. Set up camp around a small fire, tossed
    our tinfoil meals on the coals,  (Lindsey made vegatarian tin-foil
    meals with layers of potatoes, yellow squash, baby carrots, onions, 
    and baked tofu that were really good!) I had a beer and we hit the
    sack. Next morning the clouds rolled in real low, covering the mt. tops
    around us, but not us since we were in the canyon. I had fished the
    mellow part of the river before but had never hiked down into the
    canyon, which of course is what Lindsey wanted to do. So we explored
    new ground. Some fantastic cascades and waterfalls down in the canyon! 
    The sound of a large river being forced into a small canyon amongst
    rocks twice the size of houses....Scrambled back up the canyon and
    back to camp for lunch. It took Lindsey about 30 minutes to conquer
    every route on the cliff face by camp...she technical climbs pitches
    rated 10's...I took a nap and when I awoke, Lindsey was asking "what
    our options were"..%^). Kid was bored already! and I was beat already! 
    She decided that she'd rather do some more backpacking and the only
    trail lead back to the truck. So we ate all our heavy food, drank all
    our juices and water, broke camp and headed out. The same trail looked
    awfully different in the day! Stopped for supper in the fanciest 
    restaurant in Woodland Park in our wood-smoked smelling clothes and 
    ate dinner among the homecoming queens....Lindsey and I looked an each 
    other, laughed and rolled our eyes whenever a bunch would walk in 
    (being the cruel people we are). A grate trip! Lindsey's already got 
    a trip planned for us next summer further down the canyon. Grate way to 
    keep in touch with a kid....

I got home a few weeks ago, thinking I'd rather be at the Dead concert
I had tickets for, but up for a ...  Well, I wasn't quite sure
what I was up for, since it was my 40th and my wife had been very
quiet about it, though Dan had been running around that morning shouting
"surprise party, surprise party"  ;-)  But it was a school night
and we're pretty good about getting the kids a bit of sleep when 
they need it, so I couldn't really imagine a party that night.
But I was equally shocked when I did pull into the driveway, since,
sitting on top of our station, was a brand new red canoe!  I was literally
speechless ;-)  for a few minutes at least.  I think Amy got the 
reaction she was hoping for.

Well, due to too many things to do, and not enough time to do them, it
wasn't until the weekend afterward that we got the paddles, and
life vests and finally got it in the water.  Only to be greatly surprised
that Hannah burst out screaming and crying "I'm scared! I want to go 
home!"   for about five minutes.  Sigh...  We never really got anyplace
that day, though we're looking at this weekend to try again.
We were not anticipating this at all, nor did we prepare her for it,
since we had gone canoeing last summer and she really enjoyed it.
But when asked about that trip, she says she can't remember it.
  
Anybody got any good hints on how to convince, entice, cajol a 6 1/2 year
old that this won't really be a life-threatening activity?  This weekend
I was talking to her at the table, "Now you know your mom and dad would never
to anything to hurt you, or anything that wasn't safe..."
"Is this about the canoe again?"  
She's too smart for me ;-)

    My 3yr old has been telling me about my "surprise" 40th birthday ever
    since she was told that Halloween comes after that. While I was doing
    homework last weekend she would stop by every hour or so to see if it
    was my birthday yet.
    
    Linda explained to her that it was "many sleeps" away so Erica wanted
    to go to bed immediately (about 2pm) to get this sleep nonsense out of
    the way.
    
    We're also getting the "I'm scared" routine, with a plastic skeleton
    being the main target. Of course, if she thinks no one is watching, she
    dances with it :-)

  My girlfriend took her 5- and 7-year-old sons to King Richard's Faire
  (Carver MA historical recreation) this weekend.  Paid $30 to get in.
  
  From what I understand, the first thing the 5-year-old spotted was a pig
  turning on a spit.
  
  He freaked, then his older bro' contact-freaked... and they were outta
  there.
  
  Later at bedtime, the 5-year-old was still brooding about it.  "Why would
  they do that to that poor pig?"  (Her answer omitted mention of bacon, hot
  dogs, ham, ...)   - Jay

	As for six year olds and boats, as I remember it, Megann was not 
too intimidated about sailing at first. Then a few weeks later the idea 
of sleeping on the boat became sheer horror. This took great efforts to 
calm her about it, but she never felt comfotable. Then at 7 she was willing
to go sailing until we got under way and the boat healed, "Hey, you didn't
tell me it would heal" (spoken with a quiver of fear). Then any time out
I was always asked "do you promise we won't tack, jibe, heal", which of course
I would never even suggest because it's a sail boat and you can't go anywhere 
without those. 
	Now at 8 we've moved up to a multihull. Megann looks forward to sailing,
is upset when she hears that we've gone  without her, informs everyone that we 
have the most "Awesome boat on the water, enjoys passing Monohulls on a regular
basis and wants a boat of her own. The high speed, low heal and unsinkability 
of a multihull has done wonders for her comfort level. 

	This doesn't do a lot for canoeing, but I have seen a product 
announcement for a simple bar that ties two conoes together forming a multihull
of great stability. This could probably be done with a good bar and some rope. 
Now you just need to borrow a second canoe. 

	My only other suggestion would be to go out with life jackets on and 
an empty canoe, warm water and full knowlege to everyone that you are going 
to tip it over. Once she's floating she'll relize that everything is fine 
and it's not that bad. the only problem then is that she'll want to tip 
over the boat all the time.

We had a similar experience with our youngest, who we took out for the
first time at the age of 1 (we start 'em young :-).  As soon as we
started getting him into the lifejacket he flipped out, stiffened up,
threw a full hissy, the works.  After a few minutes it was clear that
we weren't going anywhere...

If you haven't already done so, you might want to get your daughter
her own paddle (the pipsqueak model), and let her practice paddling
in the bathtub...our kids are both pretty intrigued by the tornado
tubes (vortexes) they can create when paddling.  Acting as the emergency
brake is another favorite activity on the water...

    I'm not really too worried about it.  She was also sick that weekend
    (running a slight fever for a few days) so that might have been
    a factor.  The only reason I'm a bit hesitant to get them their
    own paddles is that I'm afraid I'd end up wetter than I'd like to 
    be ;-)  We're tentatively planning on trying again this weekend,
    and if Hannah freaks out again, I think she'll hang out on the
    shore with Amy, while me and Dan tool around a bit.  If she see's
    Dan having fun, it might be a strong incentive to her.  Or maybe
    if I tell her that if she has a hard time on a canoe, there'll
    be a lot of rides at Disney World she won't be able to go on... 
    (maybe that falls under 'cruel and unusual punisment' ;-)
    
    Of course, in general, I'd like to get her to a state where she
    can see that panicing is not a good or helpful response to ANYTHING.
    But, since she's only 6, I'll give her some leeway...
    
    And I have thought about the tipping over the canoe stunt, Geoff, 
    but given the season, and that there were other people on board,
    I had to pass on that one!  Multi-hull...  Not doable all the time,
    so I'd just rather get her past this hurdle.  
    In talking with her afterwards I was trying to figure out what
    scared her so much,
    "What were you scared of?"
    "That the canoe would tip over and we would drown."
    "Why do you think we wear life preservers"
    "To help you drown better."
    
    ;-)    Gonna have to work on that last one...

    Patty and I rushed to the COlo Spgs airport Friday nite to see Mike
    Duggan. Arrived at 7:50 right when his plane was supposed to arrive.
    Unfortunately, the plane arrived half an hour early and was leaving
    half an hour early..so we just made it onto the airplane to shakehands,
    hug and pass along a t-shirt...then barely made it off the plane in time
    to avoid an unscheduled trip to ALB...
    
    Then on to Shakedown Street...good time, except Patty has one beer and
    starts to feel that old familiar cold symptom. I sent her home and she
    slept most of Sat and all of sat nite while Tom Lawlor and I went back

                   Xmas Play report....
    
    Shakedown Street at the local westside bar Friday nite with Me-n-Patty,
    Glenn Ingalls down from Denver, Hoot, and others with pre-show party at
    my house. Then again Saturday nite, just me and Divide Dave...good
    time! the band was strong, even Friday's first set minus one guitar
    player..simple songs like Peggy-O and TLEO were handled very well by
    Ted until the other guitar player showed up. While screwing off Sat
    nite, the band introduced a new Xmas song..lemme see if I can rememebr
    how it goes..sung to the tune of Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do....
    
       Dose, a dose, and a mexican beer,
    Ray, the guy who buys me a beer,
    Me, the one who needs a beer,
    Fa, a long way to the bar,
    So, I think I'll have a beer,
    La, la la la la la la!
    Ti, no thanks I'll have a beer. 
    which brings us back to dose

    Then spent Sunday getting ready for our Xmas feast with my parents and
    a close friend whom we've known for about 19 years, who's house we went
    to that evening for a HUGE turkey dinner...came home stuffed to the
    gills..
    
    Xmas day was much, much fun...got lots of dead stuff, including a mouse
    pad, steali clock, deadskier t-shirt, fanny pack, plus lots of flies for
    this spring/summer/fall fishing, plus some warm water lures and a gift
    certicicate that will prob be spent on fishing stuff...
    Then our Xmas dinner, a huge ham for the flesh eaters, tofu scrambler
    for the veggie-heads, all the fixins, beers, and way too much
    sweet-type deserts, then the real sweet stuff later on...then a 3 hour
    nap, then another dinner, then more sweeeeeeeettt stuff for desert...a
    grate time. 
    
    This morning my youngest takes off with her climbing instructor/family
    for a 13 day climbing vacation, climbing in 3 states; Sedona in AZ,
    Mt. Lemmon in AZ, Josua Tree NAt Mon in Calif and somewhwere else,
     plus a week on the beach in San Diago...My oldest takes off tomorrow
    for Mission Wolf again for 4 days before she must return and make some
    money. Patty and I have a week to ourselves! Too bad I need to be
    here...
    
    I hope everyone had as grate a time as I/we did out here in Colorado
    I thought about ya'll collectively, and some of ya'll individually.
    
    Thought about Jerry, about the rest of the band and hope they had a
    good one too....there was a moment of sadness when we found out a very
    good friends of ours that lives in another part of the state is in the
    ICU and not expected to make it, but we resoned that out pretty well.
    Still, when his time comes it will be hard on us...everyone needs to
    take a little time and see how lucky we really are, count our
    blessings, and tell those we love that we love them...cause we might
    not get the chance again....

    The Mission:Wolf people came into town last week for a spiel at a local 
    elementary school and invited Tiffany to come help as a handler. They
    brought Syla, a full grown white female, and Guinnes, a yearling wolf
    pup, to the school and let the kids touch them. The cool thing, Tiffany
    was setting in the front row and both wolves remembered her, came
    over and did the submissive bit to her, crouching and play biting her
    lower jaw, letting her and all the kids know that she was the "dominant" 
    wolf. Tiffany hadn't seen either wolf since Xmas break.  Cool stuff.

    i finally got around to picking up some in-line skates a coupla weeks
  back. i went with a *nice* pair of K2's with the soft shell...wicked 
  comfortable. after skating around the neighborhood a bit i went on
  my first real outting last friday afternoon, heading down to the east
  bay bicycle path, which runs from east providence to bristol. all i can
  say is fackin' awesome!!! i didn't start at the very beginning (at india
  point park) beacause of a rather large sized hill, but a mile or so
  from the start, where after a small decline it is virtually flat 'til
  the end. the entire path is over 14 miles long, but it definitely didn't
  feel that long on the skates. 
    this path (rail-to-trail, which is an old railway converted) is a true
  gem. it runs along the coastline and offers spectacular scenery (for rhode
  island anyway). it ends (rather abrubtly at bristol harbor, about a mile
  or so past colt state park (unfortunatly inline skating is not allowed
  in the park, so a pair of sneakers in the backpack are nice if your not
  into renegade skating). surprisingly it was not that crowded, though i
  heard that it can tend to get crowded on weekends. definitely worth checking
  out for skaters and bikers alike. (i've heard the scenery puts the minuteman
  trail to shame). 
    to get there take 95s (or 146s to 95s) to 195 east. exit 3 for india
  point park (the true start) or exit 4 towards riverside, up the hill and
  there will be a parking lot on your right.

                 Fourth of July *TRIP* Report
    I know most of you (including my friend Hoot) are recovering from 
    Hartford Furthur, so here's some light reading from those of us that
    were stuck (and i do mean stuck, more on that later) in the
    high-country. Thursday afternoon we had a grate bar-b-Q before watching
    the local fireworks. Pretty small this year. I don't know if it was
    from lack of monies or the extreme fire danger we've been under for
    weeks. We had our own little "display" afterwards on the street in
    front of our house with small fountains. Friday late morning Patty
    and I took off for Tumbledown. Divide Dave and his girlfriend Julie
    were already there and staked out and off up Mousquito PAss in his new 
    toy, the Jeep he pulls behind his big-rig. Our friend John showed up
    too. Dave and I fished the swimmin hole that evening and released all
    the little brookies we caught. Next morning, after sausage and eggs, we
    hit another land locked pond that has slightly larger brookies in it. 
    Divide  Dave and I came back with 6 mostly 10", which was poor fishing
    compared to what it would have been later in the evening. Then we took
    off for Cooney Lake, which sets at about 13,000 ft. Not a tree around,
    all low-growing tundra. This lake has a ton of very picky cutthroat
    trout in it. We 4x4'd up an old wagon/mining road, stopped at the last
    large snowfield and hiked up and around the lake until dusk. Just
    beautiful! A little early for most wildflowers at that altitude, but
    the high-country sunflowers were out by the dozens. These little
    sunflowers are only about 5" tall, but have a head about the size of a
    large coffee cup. There were several tarns above Cooney we checked out,
    the last fed by a huge snowfield. Arthur the Asshole and Crazy Kady
    had a blast running after the sounds the Pika and Whistle Pigs made.
    AT about 8pm we started fishing Cooney with tiny flies and a bubble. 
    Dave lost a couple, one nice one, before I got a hook up,,a nice fat
    10" wild cutt....THE COLORS!!!! even at 8:30 pm, the colors jumped off
    the fish and onto my hands. That was my only hook up. At about 10 pm we
    decided the fish weren't hitting anymore so we walked back down to my
    old green monster truck, had a beer and hit the trail. We went about
    500 yards and I buried the passanger side of the truck up above the
    hubs in soupy, gooey mud. It took us over two hours of jacking and
    rocking up the truck, plus a short bout of altitude sickness on my
    part, to get out. Divide Dave and I were covered in mud, our fingers
    bleeding from using our hands to dig out mud and to stick large rocks
    under the tires. But we got out!!!, rather than spend the night wraped in
    a dog blanket..which i thought twice we were going to have to do. 
    Sunday Dave and Julie went back up Mousquito pass to another lake.
    Patty and I ate and loaded up the truck, hung out a little and headed
    home before the masses did. 
    
    after unloading the truck...i died on the couch for a couple of
    hours...

    slept all night thet were still sleeping this morning when we came to
    work, of course Julie likes to take them hiking and swimming when were
    in the mountains, and saturday she must have hiked them 5 miles.
    
     rfb also left out the part about the Rocky mountains goats watching us
    fish around coony lake, they sit up om the mountain about 1500 feet
    above us and watched as we beat on the water!

    Then they called me Sat afternoon to sit in Sat night at
    the Firehouse Cafe, in Worchester (Slipknot cancelled out).
    
    Had fun (especially playing a few tunes I had never heard before!)

I'm asking because I thought they dissolved the band.  Their web page
hasn't been updated since last December.

    ahhh..... what a nice PLAY weekend....
    
    Started out Friday nite with Shakedown Street with special guests from
    Chicago, THE BUZZ...hard-core Chicago blues! was a weird mix with dead
    music for some songs, but interesting on others. The guitar and sax
    players were awesome. Bout half-way thru the nite Patty and I decided
    we needed a trip to Tumbledown. 
    
    Up Saturday morning and on the road to Tumbledown. It was one of those
    rare summer-in-spring days in the high-country. No shirt, berkinstocks,
    smile on face. We pulled into the local liquer store in Fairplay as
    it's tradition and good luck everytime we pass thru to buy a bottle of 
    Red Lady Red, made in Crested Butte, COlo. (with one of the coolest beer 
    logos I've ever seen of a beautiful red-headed saloon girl circa 1860's) 
    and noticed a new beer, Trout Creek Brewing Company....IN FAIRPLAY!!! YES!
    a brewery in Fairplay!! They make a porter, scottish ale and lager so
    far, the logo is a cool looking rainbow trout jumping out of the
    water. I bought a case for the weekend.
    
    Mud season is over with and dandilion season has barely
    started...so not much green at 10,0000 feet yet. But the robins and
    woodpeckers are back, the house wrens will soon follow. Saw a small
    herd of proghorn with fawns in South Park. We built a fire and
    barbecued most of the day. At about 7:00 pm we hit a small beaver pond
    that has grown progresively larger over the last couple of years. The
    trout were jumping OUT of the water after little black flies. I didn't
    expect to get any thing on the larger white fly and bubble I was using,
    but managed three small but fat 10" brookies and missed several larger
    ones. 
    
    We heard the front come thru sometime before sunrise Sunday morning,
    signaled by several wind gusts that we could hear inside the house.
    Sunday was more like it's supposed to be this time of year in the
    high-country. Cool and getting cooler as the day went on. Then
    rain/sleet for a coupleof hours. But when it cleared off, it as once
    againa  beautiful afternoon in the high-country. We decided to stay and
    get up early Monday morning and come home. Hit the beaver pond again at
    about 7pm..no flies and a little wind so no trout were riseing or
    jumping. But I got a nice brookie and anice brown right away on the
    same white fly and bubble..nice 12" fat fish. Then a bout an hour later
    a smaller brookie. All released both days as I still have fish in the
    freezer from last year (well, not after this weekend...YUMMY!)   
    
    BAck at Tumbledown, we finished off all the Trout Creek Scottish ALes
    and Sammies and hit the sack. UP at 5am this morning, surrounded by
    thick fog. Quick cup of coffe and on the raod before sunrise. Coming
    thru South PArk, 5 of the large bison bulls were right nect to the
    road, awesome, giant critters. Over Wilkerson PAss, a herd of 7 cow elk
    right next to the road. Then right outside of Lake George, a Golden
    Eagle enjoying a breakfast of freash Canada Goose. We had to turn
    around for that one. Went back and watched him gooble on goose for
    awile. His soul-mate was about 10 feet away waiting for his'her share
    of the meal. Giant birds. We were close enough to see the golden
    feathers on the back and head that give these birds their name. They
    watched us but didn't fly off..guess that goose was tasty. 
    
    On into town, quick shower and another cup of coffee..and now I'm here
    at work....

     Theres a place out here that makes some parts with a DEAD type logo.
    
     I plan on ordering a couple of parts but I wanted to know something
    about the Seva Foundation. This company donates 10% of all proceeds to 
    the Seva Foundation, and anymore I would rather find out what these
    foundations stand for and what they do.

    SEVA is sanskrit for sight if i remember correctly and the
    organizations starts up projects like one completed in a village in
    India where many of the residents were stricken by an affliction like
    cataracts( which was easily reversible thru simple surgery)....
    
    kinda like a visual red cross i guess

    they have also worked to eliminate blindness through nutritional
    programs as well...  one of the dead's and rex's favorite charities
    that they have worked with for a long time...

bunch of sunfish and perch :^/

	no less), but I got a bunch of bass and a definitely had fun!;-)

    Back from Kansas..other than spending way too much money on a dump room
    and not getting into the big catfish like we wanted to, we had a grate
    time. Friday morning on a "Kansas Partyboat", a pontoon boat with no
    awning, we got into a few catfish of some size, but no 15 lber's.
    Friday afternoon I waded out into a shallow bay with my neoprenes and
    socked the white bass. Unfortunately, they were all too small for me to
    keep. But on an ultralite with 4 lb test line, everyone of those little
    bass was a fighter! Got 20 fish on 20 casts at one time and mustve
    caught 50 in all. Saturday morning we bank fished and got nothing. That
    evening we went out once again on the pontoon boat and caught some nice
    cats and some larger white bass. Nite fished Saturday nite and Divide
    Dave caught a nice cat and I a small one. Saw my first alligator gar, a
    dead one, on the bank. Bought 2 feet long and FUGLY! Sunday morning's
    fishing from the boat sucked, but that afternoon, once again in a small
    cove, we all caught crappie and white bass. Nite fished again SUnday
    nite and I caught one small cat, my dad caught one plus a small
    bullhead, and I lost the mother of all catfish at about midnite. Almost
    pulled me into the lake when I set the hook, tried to horse him out of
    the other lines and he snapped my 10 lb test line like thread. I saw
    him roll about 3 feet from the shore when he snapped off...woulda been
    a monster! Monday morning, again from the boat, the fishing for us
    sucked, one guy pulled in a gar about a foot long whlie crappie fishing
    that was interesting. But we came home with a few baggies of fillets for a
     fish fry, and other than some minor pain that Divide Daves dad had with 
    kidney stones, no one got hurt, sick or too drunk (except me on that last 
    one Friday nite). Think it'll be awhile before I go back to Kansas for a
    fishing trip, but who knows...

	while I haven't done any fishing myself, I've been eating quite
	a bit of fresh caught fish lately - Guntis has been having fun!

	Friday he went shad fishing in the CT River - they've come up
	the river to spawn - a yearly tradition for him and I believe
	this is the first time he's ever kept one to eat (lottsa bones).
	got caught up the creek without a paddle too ;-) - he pulled the
	rope on the motor one too many times, it broke, and well, like
	I've said, he's a handyman...

	then Sunday, he went ocean fishing for cod - says it was the
	best he's seen it in -years- (yeah!) - he came home with all
	kinds of different fish - mackerel, cod, wolffish, a big ol'
	ugly eel, I forget what else.  A nice assortment.  He caught the
	most fish and the biggest fish on the party boat.  Called up
	all his fishing buddies to brag ;-)  He said he saw lots of whales
	out there, and a huge one came right up alongside the boat.  Now,
	-that- I would be interested in seeing..

    
    Guntis should have gone to the the land of OZ with us if he wanted to
    Shad fish, there where thousands up along shore spawning, they would
    damn near run you down....
    
    The fishing trip that rfb two fathers and I went on was a kick, just ran
    outa beer to early on sunday.

    yep, shad are all over...out here we have what they call "gizzard shad"
    and we use them as bait! I always wondered about the name, until we
    used shad gizzards as bait this past weekend...they actually havea
    "gizzard" just like chickens that makes the guts stay on the
    hook...hope everyone has had lunch already....%^)

    	This is a request for someone to play with.....
    
    	I play a little bit of guitar.  I officially categorize myself as
    a 'hack' player.  I've been messing around for about 22 yrs on and off.
    It's hard to get psyched, challenged when you play alone.  I have found
    that I made my most progress by playing with/against others.
    
    	I live in Manchester, N.H.  Is there anyone in that area that would
    be interested in getting together about once a week to make some noise?
    
    	I have both acoustic and electric, so can go either way.  My
    schedule is horendous, so that might be the only difficulty.  I have a
    place where noise is not much of a problem.  Actually no problem, until
    it starts to get late, then I self limit.....
    
    	Musical interests are mainly rock, soft to medium, almost any
    group, even those grateful dead guys   8*))))
