Dead related for certain....

There's gonna be a record (I think there is a march release) that will
be other bands doing covers of Dead tunes.

I've misplaced (in my memory) the name of the LP and also some who_will_
do_what connections but:
Elvis Costello will do Ship of Fools (he did this live back on his ?87? tour)
Los Lobos doing Bertha
Indigo Girls doing ??Friend of the Devil??
and others....
I cut the article out and I'll see if I can remember :) where I put it....

should be a lot of fun!
bob

ps. Oh yeah....Lyle Lovett'll do a tune too...maybe that is was him doing
Friend of the Devil and the Indigo's doing Uncle John's...??
anybody else read this??

No, I didn't read whatever you read, Bob, but I have heard
that proceeds from the album will go to the rainforest
funds.

more info for you...
the album will be called Deadicated and it is a tribute to
the Dead by other artists doing dead covers ...

in addition to what I put in a note or 2 ago here's a bit of the lineup
(dunno whether it's complete or not):

Lyle Lovett - Friend of the Devil
Midnight Oil - Wharf Rat
Cowboy Junkies - To Lay Me Down
Jane's Addiction - Ripple
Dwight Yoakam - Truckin'
Elvis Costello - Ship of Fools
Indigo Girls - Uncle John's Band

I for one am waiting for the day I can run right down and buy it...
I mean, Juanas Addicion doing Ripple...I can hear it now ... "ooooooo
who is that band ****ing up Ripple!" I like Jane's Addiction....
Midnight Oil doing Wharf Rat! This'll be interesting...the rest are
what I would call apropos match ups (tune vs past styling...)

No Hornsby doing TN JED or Jack Straw?? I thought for certain that
that'd be on there? (probably not complete though with only 7 songs?
but then again...).

This album is another reason why the Dead are such a great band. What other
band would have such a tribute made to them? Maybe the Beatles, that's about
all I can think of.

I'd be mighty flattered if I were the Dead.

On top of it, the lineup of groups is quite diverse. Another indication of the
Dead's far-reaching effect.

I just hope Jane's Addiction doesn't metal-ize Ripple. Frankly, I don't think
they'd do such a thing.

Thanks for reminding me.. I heard a pre-release copy of the tape on
the way up to Albany! A lot of the cuts sound really grate.. some
are other bands doing dead tunes so they still sound familiar (just new
voices, instruments), and others are completely rearranged so that all
that's the same is the lyric (like Burning Spear's version of Estimated
    Prophet!)

I'll definately pick up a copy when it's released.

38.15DEADICATED - A review from the NETAD::VAUKlove will see you throughThu Apr 04 1991 12:45138
From: jojw@troi.cc.rochester.edu (John J. Wood)
Subject: A net.rap on the upcoming DEADICATED compilation
Date: 2 Apr 91 16:31:11 GMT

Disclaimer: Before posting this article, I emailed David Gans for
net.etiquette advice on posting soon-to-be-released material.

Between the Glandover and Grassau runas last week, I acquired a promo
cassette copy of DEADICATED, the upcoming Grateful Dead Tribute
Compilation, complete with an Arista Records press release.
After listening to the tape a good handful of times, I doubt that anyone
here will be disappointed with the compilation.

Here's a full listing of the tracks, with a few comments by yours truly.

SIDE A
======
"Bertha" - Los Lobos
        - Left coasters who attended the JGB Shoreline show last year
received a preview of this tune, as Los Lobos played this
as an encore. A nice jammy section at song's end,
and Steve Berlin's accordion adds a unique flavor found
in a good portion of Los Lobos recordings.

"Jack Straw" - Bruce Hornsby & the Range
        - Upstate NY Netheads who attended the Hornsby show at
Geneseo received a preview, and the Range's studio
version here is very good. Some subtle changes
in arrangement to fit the Range's sound, but the
essence of this rendition owes very much to the Dead.

"U.S. Blues" - The Harshed Mellows
        - This didn't cut it for me. The band consists of three
                Heartbreakers (guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist
Benmont Tench, drummer Stan Lynch), two Georgia Satellites
(Dan Baird on lead vocals, Mauro Magellan on drums),
Michelle Malone on backing vocals and Brendan O'Brien on
bass. The hamheaded "southern boogie" arrangements waste the
Heartbreakers' talents, and Dan Baird's vocal shrieks are
a cross between Steven Tyler and Rod Stewart. Imagine
imitation rehashed Aerosmith, and you have an idea
of what this dud sounds like. When you get the CD and play
this once, you'll want to skip it.

"Ship Of Fools" - Elvis Costello
        - A poignant, heartfelt rendition with taste. Costello also
avoids his higher range, and *sings* this rather than
blars it out. While the rendition's arrangements differ
from the Dead versions we all know, it also is played
with a similar aura to the MARS HOTEL studio cut.

"China Doll->Cassidy" - Suzanne Vega
        - A dreamy vocal performance with sparse backup. "Cassidy"
is based off the ACE studio original. "China Doll"
features Vega's breathy vocals and an innocence
that derives from the MARS HOTEL version. One
of my favorite tracks so far.

"Truckin'" - Dwight Yoakam
        - A barrel-chested southern country rocker with plenty of
punch. Yoakam's yodelish vocals also provide plenty
of amusement, and the song is played with country &
                western gusto.

"Casey Jones" - Warren Zevon w/ David Lindley
        - A straightforward rocker, with some nice slide work by
Lindley. Zevon's vocals are what you could expect,
as the rendition is a cross between Zevon's vision
                and southern California rock.

SIDE B
======
"Uncle John's Band" - Indigo Girls
        - SIGH!!:-} Absolutely wonderful! Based on the Dead's
studio version. One lyric has changed to, "SISTER,
I declare/ Have you seen the like". Played with
taste and the Indigos' vocals shine sweetly.
Emily Saliers also chips in some nice guitar lines
that pay loving tribute to Garcia.

"Friend Of The Devil" - Lyle Lovett
        - Another superb reading. A laid-back, homey country
arrangement where Lovett's vocal and acoustic
guitar are the mix's main focus. Very tasteful.
Those who caught his recent appearance on Late
Night With David Letterman already have a good idea
of what this track is like.

"To Lay Me Down" - Cowboy Junkies
        - SIGH!!:-} Margo Timmins' vocals are impeccible here,
and the Junkies' subtle backup is tasteful
throughout, including dobro, mandolin, and accordion. My
vote for the best cover of the compilation.

"Wharf Rat" - Midnight Oil
        - The other track that failed to move me. A bit new
wavish as you could expect, but the arrangements
themselves are a tad simplistic. However, I will
be the first to say that the New Wave genre doesn't
do much for me, so those with "new music" tastes
(that I lack) will probably enjoy this one. Other
complaint: this is a ballad, but the rock arrangements
are too fast, so the song's actual pathos becomes lost
to these ears. I may be in the minority here, so
judge for yourself on April 23rd.

"Estimated Prophet" - Burning Spear
        - A natural fit, and Winston Rodney and company deliver
an intense, tribal reading that is a cross between
                reggae/rap and ska. Great stuff!

"Deal" - Dr. John
        - Another gem, but I'm not surprised, as Mac Rebennack
                utilizes tasteful New Orleans-like arrangements.
Sung and played with a feel only the good doctor
can provide, with some great brass in the background,
and a nice guitar solo (but since the press release
doesn't list the musician credits, I have no idea
                who it is). Again...great stuff!

"Ripple" - Jane's Addiction
        - An interesting cover which fades while the band plays the
opening bars of "The Other One". Thankfully, the
excesses are kept to a minumum, and the band produces
an updated reading that stresses a nervous urgency
rather than the reflection of life itself.

The release date is April 23rd. No, I haven't seen the cover yet,
but even on tape, the sound quality is crisp and clean throughout.
Probably the most impressive thing about this compilation are the
diversity of artists selected from different genres (pop, folk,
new wave, reggae, rock), and how all unite to create an impressive
package. However, because of that diversity, I don't know if you'll
enjoy every track; and that becomes an issue of personal tastes
and subjectivity.

Plenty in stock at the Minor Chord in Acton MA...

The fold up box with plastic inserts is pretty funky - and I
don't particularly care for it. I would much rather have the

Sound quality is fine. The full introductions are there.

Er, actually, I guess it *is* an official vault tape. I checked last night

I took this off the net since it reminded me I'd been meaning to talk
about it in here anyway. My friend, Steve, has a pre-released copy
also and what I've heard (only over the phone so far) sounds grate!
He's got about 140 minutes worth, but told me that 2 of the songs he's
got were cut from the to-be-released version. I don't remember which.
Hopefully I'll get to hear the whole thing soon. Does anyone know the
    scheduled release date?

When he first received the tapes, he was given 4 60 minute tapes and we
all freaked thinking it was so much music! Turned out to be only about
35 minutes a tape, though. Pretty weird way to record it, huh? Anyway
    - here's the play list.

I don't remember seeing this posted. This is the song lineup as it
appears on an advance promo pre-recorded cassette. The tape was titled
"Jerry Garcia Band" and is to be released on Arista records. It looks
to be about the right length for a 2-CD set. What I've heard so far
sounds good. I think they did a fine job of capturing the live JGB
sound.

Hey! I can't believe that I'm the only one in here with the newly
released Garcia/Grisman CD. Or am I?

I found it it Tower Records, Boston, on Saturday. I've played it
about six times since then! I love it!

The title is simply "jerry GARCIA / david GRISMAN". The line up is Jerry
on guitar and vocals, David on mandolin (of cours), Jim Kerwin on bass,
Joe Craven on percussion and fiddle (no, not at the same time!).

The songs:

		The Thrill Is Gone (4:43)
		Grateful Dawg (3:39)
		Two Soldiers (4:24)
		Friend of the Devil (7:04)
		Russian Lullaby (4:12)
		Dawg's Waltz (4:34)
		Walkin' Boss (5:17)
		Rockin' Chair (7:56)
		Arabia (16:25)

For a total time of 58:28. Yes...Arabia really is over 16-minutes long!

It's copyright 1991 on the Acoustic Disk label (Grisman's label?). acd-2.

Got the new JGB cd here - it's called just "Jerry Garcia Band".
Rockit has it for $17.99, Lechmere has it on sale for $17.98.

    Contents:
The Way You Do The Things You Do (8:08)
    Waiting For A Miracle (5:54)
    Simple Twist of Fate (11:54)
Get Out Of My Life (8:53)

    Dear Prudence (11:41)

    Stop That Train (8:51)
    Senor (7:43)
    Evangeline (4:47)
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (9:36)
    Don't Let Go (17:16) (!!)
    That Lucky Old Sun (11:32)
    Tangled Up In Blue (12:16)

It doesn't say where it was recorded, other than in 1990. Good deal for
the price. A 2 disc set and it's still cheaper than Dead Set! Why is
    that still so expensive?

Also, Lechmere is having a sale on all Warner/Reprise/Atlantic/Virgin/
Elektra/Asylum/etc labels, 20-25% off. Time to fill in the collection

38.55New Robert Hunter live CDKOBAL::MROGERSSomeday everything's gonna be different...Thu Sep 05 1991 15:4326
Besides a new live JGB there's a new Robert Hunter live CD out called
"Box of Rain." The nine live tunes are from his December '90 tour.
Hunter made direct recordings of all the shows but audience tapes cut
on a DAT recorder from the last night of the tour were rated as juicier
by Hunter so he used those rather than board tapes for most of the
cuts. Two of the cuts, "Franklin's Tower" and "Space" were recorded at
    his show in Somerville!

    Song list:

    Box of Rain (5:48)
    Scarlet Begonias (3:22)
    Franklin's Tower (4:40)
    Jack Straw (3:55)
    Brown-Eyed Women (3:30)
    Reuben & Cherise (8:28)
    Space (1:58)
    Deal (2:55)
    Promontory Rider (4:58)
    Ripple (3:52)
    Boys in the Barroom (1:23)
    Stella Blue (3:58)

The cover art is identical to the book that came out last fall.
Speaking of books, Dan Gans' new book, "Conversations with the Dead"
should be in the stores by now, too.

Yeah, I did notice that about the labeling not being on the wide spine,

I don't mind long boxes if they have nice artwork. I keep them and cut
out the pictures. I used to put them on the ceiling at my old house,
but I don't know what to do with them now. Still, I'd prefer just a
simple old plastic box. Go to Lechmere and they have tons of classical
cds just shrinkwrapped (not only cheap stuff either, although the
Laserlights I got are really good) and I doubt they have any
significant amount of thefts. I went to stores in London where
everything was just in jewel boxes, and they had a huge amount of discs
in a small space, like book shelves. It wasn't that hard to look at
    them either.

Some of the tracks sound interesting, where they combined several
spaces together and then ran them into a midi unit. Are the Dead the

Hey Don,

Sonic Wallpaper!!!! Ugh! :^)

Simple difference of opinion I thought I'd express - no flame intended :^)

Not all new age is of the Andreas V. type (although I enjoy Andreas at
times) -- Tangerine Dream is a bit more "harsh" than Andreas, Wind Machine, or
any Widham Hill collections... Ever listen to Tangerine Dream or Shadowfax??
Each of these has it's own tone or mood that takes me to different places,
although not always the same place as the boys. But I like that - different
places for different moods...

I'll be the first to agree the Dead's drum/space is one-of-a-kind and quite
unique, but what about "Blues for the Rainforest"?? I think this could be
likened to new age type stuff... IMHO (pls don't shoot ;^) I think this stuff
would be much more listenable than a full CD of drums/space...

Glenn who's musical tastes also enters the abstract but hasn't heard IR yet...

Aw c'mon folks, I was just funnin' ya. My music collection is quite
diverse as well, going from small ensemble chamber music, and Gregorian
chants to full scale orchestral; Jazz, R&B, Rap, New age, C&W, slash,
comedy albums, old time r&r, dead, dead, more dead. (Insert anything
else you can think of here) I'm the guy around here who sticks up for
MC Hammer as well as Jerry Garcia. Shadowfax is cool in my book! I'll
listen to everything. Yes that's right, I'm a music slut!

Sorry, I didn't mean to step on anyone's toes!

Tangerine Dream is great! Especially their old stuff, like "Journey
Through A Burning Brain", from the Electronic Meditation album. I
thinbk their best stuff is from the 70's, before they went totally
electronic: Phaedra, Ricochet, Alpha Centauri, stuff like that.
Another good one for strange background sounds is Brian Eno. Some of
his instrumental albums like Discreet Music, Music for Airports, and
the Fripp & Eno albums are really strange.

I have probably as wide a range of music as Don does, from 12th century
medieval music to jazz to classical to electronic. The only stuff I
really don't care for are rap, modern heavy metal (although the
classics like early Deep Purple is really cool, when they weren't doing
Neil Diamond covers), and the really commercial c&w.

One of my latest cds is Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. If
you want some mean drums, listen to what Gene Krupa was doing then.

Benny Goodman did the original "Sing Sing Sing". I think it was written
by some latin musician but they really jazzed it up.

Glenn Miller's big hits were "In The Mood", "Pennsylvania 6-5000",
"String of Pearls", "Moonlight Serenade", etc. Trumpet player. Benny
    Goodman played clarinet.

How do I know all this? Glenn Miller is my father's all-time favorite
musician, and that stuff is about as implanted in my brain as Bugs
Bunny cartoons. Also, Benny Goodman's Carnegia Hall jazz concert was

Yes, Glenn Miller played Trombone. But he is the arranger who really
created that classic saxophone/clarinet sound (with the clarinet
playing the lead) that is so much a trademark of the swing era.

One thing I miss at times is playing in a jazz band.....in high school

I just saw this commercial for the first time, and I thought it sounded like
Jerry. I remember hearing a bass guitar, not that I thought it was Phil (tho

Hey, I have a question that is actually about Commercial Dead Music.

I have been considering buying the 2-CD live set of Steal Your Face,
Vol.1&2, recorded in '75. Problem is, I've never heard anyone talk
about it. Is it terrific, real good, just OK, or what? (I have other
live commercial releases and some tapes [thanks to Mr. Bailey], but
I don't know anything about this one.)

While I'm at it, here's another question for general discussion:

What's your all-time favorite commercial Dead release (live and/or

Well, I've heard it called "Steal Your Money." :^) I haven't heard
the whole thing, but the LPs had very poor sound quality (may have been
fixed for CD), and the performances weren't "definitive" versions. I
was surprised it was released on CD at all, but the money machine rolls
    on . . .

I'd rate the live releases as follows:

Live/Dead -- Dated, but still the best. Side 4 will drive those
    unwanted guests home.

Without A Net -- Frankie does make it for this great live set.

Europe '72 -- Fine, but the performances are a bit too laid back.

Dead Set/Reckoning (aka For The Faithful) -- The band at a low point.
Reckoning is worth owning 'cause it's acoustic, but Dead Set is poorly
    selected, haphazard, and limp.

Steal Your Face -- Haven't heard it, or anything good about it.

    How many did I forget?

While I wouldn't be so negative as to call it "Steal Your Money" as Mr.
Ide did :) I would agree with him that there are other disks where your
money would be better spent. To me SYF is just a bunch of live songs rolled
into 2 disks and the "feeling" of the live show is lost. The sound quality of
the CD is not impressive considering what "they" can do with old tapes and new
technology.

I remember that after I bought it I was disappointed.

As for live stuff - I like:
			 Without A Net
			 Live/Dead
			 Reckoning
			 Europe '72

Steal your money :) I guess "they" did!

That's how I feel about Dead Set.

My impression was that it was botched from the beginning and rushed out
the door. Phil had something to do with it and has said that he'd like
to disown it. I don't know if they could have improved it for CD.
    Maybe they did!

As for the studio releases, I like "Wake of the Flood" a lot, though it
might just define laid-back. "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead"
are the classic country-rockers. The only real clinker is "Skeletons
From the Closet," a poorly programmed greatest hits package (the Dead's
music doesn't lend itself to hits compilations anyway, and "Rosemary"??
-- that was a top ten hit, right?? :^)).

There's parts of SYF that I like, but for the most part its not their best..
The CD sound quality is good, though not spectacular. I haven't heard the
vinyl version in years and don't remember much about it.

I love Reckoning, Europe 72 and Without a Net, all very worth owning..and Live
Dead of course. As far as studio albums I love Wake of the Flood, American
Beauty, Workingman's and (gasp!) In the Dark..each of their studio efforts have
their high points for me however.

Live: I like Without a net best. Steal Your Face is definitely the weakest of
the major live albums. Live Dead/Dead Set/Europe 72 and REckoning all have great
moments, but none of them really come close to a live show. All of them have
both superb and mediocre moments.

Studio - I like Built to Last, wake of The Flood, and American Beauty as their
best studio efforts.
38.138LANDO::HAPGOODnow we play for lifeTue Dec 31 1991 13:2014
Yeah I agree with you about Dead Set being the same as SYF although they
made an attempt to keep that live feel a bit more than SYF. (like they include
drums and a teeny bit of space (the jerry mosquito guitar in to Fire)....
but only an attempt (it must be tough hacking apart a series of shows and
trying to make a live lp).

I like most all of their studio stuff (yes, even Built To Last and TOG)
but am partial to Wake of the Flood (ditto!!), Blues for Allah and
Workingman's Dead.

Wake of the Flood is my fave though....

My favorite is Europe 72.....lots of good tunes, and i love the 'sound' that
the boyz had at that point in time. But.....I understand that they dubbed
the vocals for that album and Skull&Roses......which wasn't a bad idea,
actually, because these albums, more than being just 'live' albums, actually
contain the only releases of tunes never released from the studio, like
'Jack Straw', 'Tennessee Jed', 'Brown-Eyed Woman', 'Bertha'.....etc...
On a few tunes, like Tennessee Jed, you can faintly hear the original vocal
tracks in the background, probably bleeding into the instrument microphones.

Anyway, sorry to digress.....

Reckoning is also a favorite.....its really good because its acoustic, and
I really like the laid-back feel of it. Its got some grate jams on it, and
a really really cool flowing Birdsong!

Like a few have said, Live Dead is also incredible!! And you can find
better live albums than 'Steal your Face.'

I think that Mars Hotel and American Beauty are great studio albums.....
'Scarlet Begonias', 'China Doll', and 'Unbroken Chain' are excellently done
studio takes, though not containing long extended jams, they all have a
great feel......American Beauty is just a classic, to me its a MUST HAVE for
the collection.....the definitive version of 'Ripple', its absolutely
beautiful and could not be improved on IMO. 'Wake of the Flood' is also
really good (in fact, I think they did their best studio work from 1970-1975),
though I find myself listening to side two almost all the time......
"Eyes of the World" is excellent, and the entire "Weather Report Suite."

"Live Dead" -- has red cover with female ghost apparition rising from a coffin
holding a banner that says Live Dead on it..

I believe the Bertha, Mama Tried one is known as "Skull and Roses", and I

I would have to agree that "One from the Vault" is the best because it
is from one show and that intro to Help on the Way blows you right out
    of your chair.

It all depends on what "era" of the dead you are interested in.
if your what the Pig Pen era then go for "Europe '72" - He's
Gone->Truckin'->Prelude (or epologue??) is great. If you are
interested in Brent go for "Without a Net". And if you want the
Keith/Donna era go for "One From the Vault".

I agree with da ve, there are tapes that I would pick over each of

It lives! Two From the Vault is now available here in
Boulder. (I got my copy yesterday at a place called CD Cellar.)

Recorded August 23-24, 1968. The line-up:

   CD 1
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (15:59)
Dark Star (11:20)
Saint Stephen (4:40)
The Eleven (14:27)
Death Don't Have No Mercy (8:23)

   CD 2
The Other One (15:40)
New Potato Caboose (14:16)
Turn On Your Lovelight (17:13)
(Walk Me Out In The) Morning Dew (7:13)

Wow! Sound is great, but boy has the sound changed in 24 years!
Morning Dew does end abruptly, but not too bad - not in the middle of
a verse.

I don't know if this has been discussed in here before, but ...

Occasionally I see a CD in the Dead bins at Strawberries called
"Hooterroll" with Garcia and Howard Wales (?). What kind of music
is this? Is it worth buying?

    thanks - Dave

Hooterroll. Ah, kind of jazzy spacey stuff. All instrumental.
Can't quite remember anything off it at the moment. I've listened
to it a few times. If you want, I'll listen again over the weekend
and see if I can come up with a more coherent response ;-)

Question:

_Did_ or _did_not_ Garcia play the pedal steel on the Mar's Hotel's
"Pride of Cucamonga"?

Something in the back of my mind is telling me that he _did_not_. That I
read this somewhere, possible an article in The Golden Road or some such.
Debunking popular myths and all that.

There is no regular lead guitar track on PoC, at least that I can hear.
The lead is played by the pedal steel. This all makes the Mars Hotel
_outtakes_ version of PoC all the more sweeter, cause the (rock_crit_ese here:)
bouncy, ebuilient lead guitar on it _is_ definitly Garcia!

(Say, didn't Bill Graham introduce Weir as "ebuilient" on 12-5-71 ? or was
that on the 1975 OfTV show?)

Yeah, right! Someone made a sanctioned tape of a show. This is done all
the time. However, they then turned to a country that does not have
the same copyright laws as the US and turned it into a profit making
deal which is explicitly NOT sanctioned. I'm sure, legally, they are
able to sell it without the same fear of it being confiscated as a
bootleg. However, I'd be extremely surprised if the band gave it their
blessing or they recieve any profit from its sale. Which still speaks,
BOOTLEG, to my mind.

38.211How many minutes does it take it understand Dark Star ?SLOHAN::FIELDSAin't gonna worry my life anymoreSun Sep 25 1994 14:3930
Well here is something we have been waiting for !!! someone must have
leaked out our ideas of how many minutes of Dark Star have been played
    live in concert......

Recording engineer John Oswald has done the weirdest thing to the song
Dark Star (well not that weird) he has taken over 40 hours (2400 mins
in dechead timing) from 100 shows from the years 1969 to 1993 and cut
and spliced it into a 60 minute CD !!!

yeah a 60 minute Dark Star, Cool !!!

Grayfolded, Part One: Transitive Axis is an hour long CD that sounds
like a single preformance of Dark Star. you can get you copy by calling
1-800263-4020, total cost is $28.75 (that includes shipping and
handling) Canadian (minus the @30% difference to US$$$) comes to @ 20
bucks !!!! you might wanna call around to some stores in you area as it
has been shipped to some record stores....

oh and if 60 minutes was not enough, part two Grayfolded, Part Two:
Mirror Ashes will be coming along shortly !

there is a nice wrte-up in the Worcester T&G Sunday Datebook (Sept. 25,

---------
Deadhead Alert: An 18-minute animated home laser disc aiming to capture the
"feeling" of live Grateful Dead concerts will hit stores this week through
Image Entertainment. Produced by Len Dell'Amico and Larry Lachman, who
conceived and staged special effects for Grateful Dead concerts from 1987
-1991, the laser disc - which will also be made into a video soon - is
called "Infrared Sightings." Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia, who died
Aug. 9, was involved in the initial planning of the project.... Also, two
Garcia albums with mandolinist David Grisman will be out next spring,
including a second volume of "Old and In the Way," a bluegrass album that
Garcia and Grisman and other musicians recorded in 1972. The second
compilation will be made up of Garcia-Grisman sessions recorded between 1990

Don't think I've seen any comment in here on the new "Roots of the
Grateful Dead" CD on Shanachie. (Original versions of Morning Dew, Big
Railroad Blues, Big Boss Man, etc. etc. The Dead had a hand in its
production; also R Crumb's cover art is offered as a T shirt by GDM...)

Anyone formed an opinion yet? I've only played it once myself -- I think
what's there is fine (esp. the ones I hadn't heard, like the original
Morning Dew). Not sure how often I'd play it straight through, but...

My other thought -- they really need a Vol.2 of this. They missed a lot
of cherce originals of Dead covers. - Jay

I tried to get this CD at Tower in NYC after the Zero show Friday

P.S. Zero was great - only about 80-100 people showed up. Steve
Kimmock is some guitarist. His overall style is very similar to
Jerry's. It's very errie - if da (remaining) boyz want to tour, he's

Good question! I know that the previous two are now available as

One reason I'm psyched for Dick's Picks 3 is I've been getting back into
  Deadtape games...

I'm constructing composite Dead concerts from (so far) 1968-9,
1970-1, 1972, and 1973-5, working from both tapes and commercial releases.
I was going to look into 1977 (which people keep telling me to) after I
  finished those.

Games tapeheads play. The only rub so far has been messing with the sound
on the tapes to make them fit with each other and with the commercial
stuff. Don't have no fancy equipment.

The 68-9 is kinda like Live Dead, but with an Other One, a Morning Dew,
etc. Stuff that shoulda been on Live Dead.

1970-1 is a little strange, as (fleeting) 70 vs. early 71 vs. late 71
shows somehow don't mix real well (pigpen seems to be in and out, unless
my ears deceive me). It only hangs together circumstantially, because
it's all post-Workingman's/Beauty, and nearly always with NFA/GDTRFB.

'72 includes Cryptical and Comes a Time from Hundred Year Hall plus songs
  introduced in Europe.

'73-5 has the common threads in the repetoire that connect those years for
me (Big River, Sugaree, Roses, Wake/Mars/Allah, ... can't bring myself to
include Around & Around, though it was omnipresent, and Il paso on El
Paso). Haven't sorted it all out yet.

I try to include a Dark Star and St. Stephen from each time (if I can find
clean/compelling ones), they seem to add a dimension... Just got my hands
on the "samba" versions (as I think of them) on the '71 Dick's Picks a
couple of weeks ago, they're in.

  '77 -- a new frontier... - Jay

Re: "The Music Never Stopped: Roots of the Grateful Dead"

OBRAY RAMSEY, Rain and Snow - Bluegrass banjo type music, Jerry always liked
this kind of music, Jerry could have learned it from Peter Rowan who
did it with Bill Monroe (who was credited with creating bluegrass music)
MERLE HAGGARD, Mama Tried - Classic Merle Haggard, this is where "country"
	music came from
DIXIE CUPS, Iko Iko - This is an old song, the Dixie Cups version was recorded
on somewhat of a lark with (I think) only percussion as accompaniment,
lots of great versions of this song out of New Orleans
REV. GARY DAVIS, Samson & Delilah - Great song, Rev. Gary Davis is worth
checking out, Hot Tuna did lots of Rev, Gary Davis songs. My Hot Tuna
favorite is acoustic Death Don't Have No Mercy - which we have all
heard. Rev. Gary Davis was (is?) an awesome acoustic guitar player.
I suspect that members of Hot Tuna may have actually taken guitar
	lessons from Rev. Gary Davis.
CANNON'S JUG STOMPERS, Big Railroad Blues -
MARTY ROBBINS, El Paso - I grew up with this song on the radio, a favorite of
my older brother, this is the "western" side of "country and western"
BOB DYLAN, It's All Over Now Baby Blue - Another gem from a well of great songs
CHARLIE PATTON, Spoonful
HOWLIN' WOLF, Red Rooster - There is a great version of this from 1970 with
Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones in accompaniment. This is one of
the few songs that the Dead covered that I think they didn't necessarily
	do better than the original.
CHUCK BERRY, Promised Land - That Johnny B. Good riff will live forever.
HENRY THOMAS, Don't Ease Me In
JIMMY REED, Big Boss Man - Jimmy Reed has always been greatly under-rated in
my opinion. Pigpen "personalized" some of the lyrics and changed
the tone of the song a lit.
BOBBY BLUE BLAND, Turn on Your Love Light - Pigpen really understood the blues
and Bobby Blue Bland could sing the blues, I think this has horns.
BONNIE DOBSON, Morning Dew - Jerry put more feeling into his versions that
	this lady ever imagined
BUDDY HOLLY, Not Fade Away - Classic rock and roll.
WOODY GUTHRIE, Goin' Down This Road Feelin' Bad - I taught in a high school for
gifted children who chose to exit their graduation ceremony to the
Beatles "Here Comes The Sun". Runner up in the voting was this tune.
I think the intent of the voters was to use the Dead's version. Those
kids had the right attitude about that school.
PINDAR FAMILY W/ JOSEPH SPENCE, I Bid You Goodnight - Pretty crude version here.
If you want to hear a *great* version of this get Arron Neville's solo
album that covers this with the Neville Brothers and friends singing.
	Great version.

Anybody know of an original version of I Know You Rider?

Jim

I have the Bobby Blue Bland album (yep, vinyl!) with this on it. Has the
horns. I think the Dead's (with Pig) arraignment is straight from this
version! Just longer. Another great tune on this album - why I bought it -
is "Something on Your Mind". Which Pigpen & the Boy's covered in 1966,
for example 11-29-66. Again, Pigpen and the band did a very straight cover!
Even down to the stop-time vocal-only break. Jer sure did play a great
blues guitar... *sigh*....

BTW, the Cannon's Jug Stompers and Henry Thomas cuts are not their
signature tunes -- you can find those in the (excellent up to mid 50s)
Smithsonian anthology "The Blues". Which BTW, has loads of cuts that were
direct archetypes of rock songs. The programmer must've picked 'em that
way on purpose, it's startling how many famous 60s and 70s riffs came
directly from 20s and 30s recordings by blues artists that emerged from
obscurity for just one or two 78's of note.

38.2517/8 Set 1 and 7/9 Set 2 boots -- not greatHELIX::CLARKWed Nov 01 1995 15:2836
Picking up a tangential discussion from the last-show tree topic, 486...

Quick consumer note about the boot CDs "Jerry's Last Show 7/8/95 Set 1"
                                     and "Jerry's Last Show 7/9/95 Set 2".

First, it does bother me that folks in Italy and elsewhere are leaping to
cash in on concert tapes. If they were doing it out of reverence or for
posterity, it would be one thing... In this particular case, their haste
  manifests itself in several ways.

The main thing to be aware of: The cut lists are reversed -- 7/8 Set 1
lists the cuts for 7/9 Set 2 and vice versa. The CD contents and liner
notes are correct for those sets, only the back-insert cut lists are wrong.

If you buy 7/8 Set 1, you really are getting:
Jack Straw, Sugaree, Wang Dang Doodle, Althea, Queen Jane Approximately,
Tennessee Jed, Eternity, & Don't Ease Me in.

If you buy 7/9 Set 2, you really are getting [last 5/9ths of set + encores]:
Corrina, Drums/Space, Unbroken Chain, Sugar Magnolia, Black Muddy River,
    Box of Rain, & "fireworks".

Other signs of sloppiness & haste:
...mention of included video footage (?? assuming this is spurious)
...total lengths listed as approximately 74 minutes each (Set 1 is
     actually 59 & change)
  ...both shows designated "Last"
...tapes dumped to CD without editing/reduction of between-songs "air"

The liner notes seem pretty knowledgeable (measuring each performance
against others that summer -- in fact a bit overcritical in spots, while
making a plea to listeners to give "Eternity" a chance...).

The sound: well, OK for in-the-audience (exclamations by surrounding
onlookers intrude), nowhere near soundboard quality to my ears. With good
tapes available, I wouldn't rush to get this... - Jay
38.252CJS signature tunes *real* familiar...HELIX::CLARKWed Nov 01 1995 15:4421
P.S. to a comment about these not being the artists' signature tunes...

> CANNON'S JUG STOMPERS, Big Railroad Blues -

If you had to pick a signature tune for Cannon's Jug Stompers (pre WW2
black jug band), IMO it would be either "Minglewood Blues" or "Viola Lee
Blues". (Erasing any doubt Garcia and Weir are into these guys...)

> HENRY THOMAS, Don't Ease Me In

Aka "Ragtime Texas". On reflection, I'm not sure this guy ever latched
onto a tune that became identified with him. Including "Don't Ease Me
In". The tune in Smithsonian's "The Blues" is "Bull Doze Blues", a pretty
  generic sample of his stuff.

This guy was one of those pre-blues "songsters" who played everything he
heard around him (dance tunes, spirituals, pop songs, folk/ hillbilly/
cowboy songs, work songs, narrative ballads, ragtime tunes, minstrel songs
-- all the stuff that floated out of the 1800s and predates commercial
blues). A chameleon. More famous exponents of his ilk are Mississippi
John Hurt, Leadbelly, and Mance Lipscomb. - Jay

Second Coming Records near Harvard Sq. has zillions of boot CDs, Dead and
nearly everyone else. Cost is usually about $20-$25 per CD.
Often quite hilarious to see the badly botched song titles, and bizaro
covers that attempt to appeal to 'coolness'.

> -< 7/8 Set 1 and 7/9 Set 2 boots -- not great >-

Actually, I should "clarify" a couple of things about that review I did...

No, I didn't buy the bootleg CD -- I sampled it in the store.

FWIW, and I'm not kidding, I don't buy bootlegs. Part of this is probably
hypocrisy -- I know dozens of local collectors and critics I can drop in
on for listens. (Looser morals, bigger wallets? 8) You better believe I
know every note of the Basement Tapes, Albert Hall '66 (dylan of course),
Live-R, Black Album, etc. etc. (I have other favorites that aren't as
famous.) Never have paid a dime for a bootleg, though.

But part of this is genuine ambivalence on my part:
  - I don't like to buy things that don't benefit the artists.
  - The really great ones surface on commercial releases anyway, albeit w/
infuriating gaps [all the ones I listed above have, or will soon, become
available, except Live-R. Albert Hall '66 is due soon... Beatles
    outtakes 19-Nov... DP3 7-Nov...]
  - With so many high quality sanctioned Dead tapes around, what's the
    point?
  - Most of them aren't up to snuff, not unlike commercial releases. (I do
a lot of asking stores to open one up and play me a sample... before I
    report to friends 8).

Also, I didn't mean to single out Italian bootleggers for criticism --
Italy has been, for some time, a hotbed of bootlegging (the way Austria is
a hotbed of preWW2 reissues of gems they can't possibly have licensed but
rather got directly off vast private European collections of 78s...).
A lot of it is done out of reverence and for posterity, and apparently w/
the blessing of local & international authorities.

The one I critiqued isn't even Italian, I don't think -- and it was just
this one particular pair of CDs I thought reaked of hasty assembly.

I'll be more careful how I discuss "live concerts CDs" in the future.
  -JayC.

from the internet:

the new Old and In the Way CD is now due in
stores on Feb. 20th, not today. (I just called my local CD merchant and
was told this.) I guess it's just another release delay, which is not
uncommon.

I also verified the new date with Acoustic Disc, the CD's label (founded
by David Grisman). But you can place an advance order with them now, and
receive a copy of the CD "in about two weeks" (i.e., around Feb. 13). Call
1-800-221-DISC if you're interested in ordering.

For those who have no idea what the hell I'm talking about, here's the
album blurb from the Acoustic Disc Web pages:

Old and In the Way - That High Lonesome Sound (ACD-19)
-------------------------------------------------

At Last - New Old

And now...21 years after the release of one of the most popular bluegrass
albums ever comes more Old and In the Way - That High Lonesome Sound on the
Acoustic Disc Archive Series. This new recording features 14 previously
unreleased songs from the original live performances that produced the
acoustic excitement captured on the first Old and In the Way. Jerry Garcia
picked banjo (his first instrument of expertise) and sang in this legendary
band which played together, mostly in Northern California, for only nine
months in 1973. This unique group of talented individuals featured, in
addition to Garcia, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, David Grisman on
mandolin and vocals, Vassar Clements on fiddle and vocals, and John Kahn on
the upright bass, and exposed a huge number of people to bluegrass for the
very first time.

One of the great things about Old and In the Way was its eclectic and
extensive repertoire. This recording includes hard-core bluegrass classics
like Bill Monroe's "I'm On My Way Back to the Old Home" and "Uncle Pen," Jim
and Jesse McReynolds' "Hard Hearted," Vassar Clements' amazing fiddling on
his own "Lonesome Fiddle Blues" and "Orange Blossom Special," as well as
Peter Rowan favorites like "The High Lonesome Sound" and "Lonesome L.A.
Cowboy." There's also an inventive bluegrass arrangement of the 50's pop
ballad, "The Great Pretender" and an evocative performance by Jerry of the
gospel anthem "Angel Band." All this, plus a 20-page booklet featuring rare
photographs and notes by bluegrass scholar Neil Rosenberg, make this release
a must for all bluegrass fans, deadheads, dawgheads and lovers of American
acoustic roots music.

>Fire on the Mountain - Reggae Celebrates the Grateful Dead

I listened to this once through on the way to work. My first reaction is
kind of mixed, though first reactions can steer you wrong...

In the spirit of dwelling on the positive -- one cut I instantly liked on
first hearing was Lasana Bandele's "Cassidy". Here's a cover that doesn't
just take a Dead tune and put it to a reggae beat, but reworks the song.
Sounds like he was having a damn good time too (he's a Bay Area reggae
artist, has an underground following the notes say).

This is the sort of reggae reworking I was hoping for from this CD, like
what Burning Spear did with "Estimated Prophet" in the Deadicated tribute.

Reggae artists and the Dead oughta have spiritual and, uh, sacremental
common ground, as well as similar generosity, good humor, and general
outlook in musicmaking... Plus some Dead tunes might lend themselves to
reggae treatment. Was hoping more would take it up and run with it.

The cut I was expecting the least from, "Catfish John" (don't like the
song much) is actually given a decent turn by Toots (Hibbert). 'Course
I'm a sucker for those Otis Redding mannerisms.

"Wharf Rat" by Michael Rose (Black Uhuru's main man) is interesting...

I like it when the musicians take liberties or add something of their own,
such as the reggae-vocalese section in "Casey Jones" by Wailing Souls...

"Eyes of the World" seems like a natural, lyrically at least, for a reggae
artist -- and it is great to hear the vocal nailed for once 8) 8) .
(Couldn't resist.) Coulda been a great cut with a little more reworking,
esp. in the rhythm section, but hey, I'll settle for good.

Guess I've commented favorably on several cuts... Guess I wish all the
cuts had the rawness and rhythmic surprise of the "Cassidy" cover. And
why no Island/Mango-affiliated headliners? -- I have a hunch label
  affiliations played a hand...

"grain of salt" advisory applies -- by the 2nd or 3rd listening I'll
probably think "Cassidy" is drivel and all the slick uptownish cuts
  timeless classics... - JayC.

Reggae fans P.S. The 2-CD "Anthology" sets coming out for Toots & the
Maytals, Burning Spear, Black Uhuru, and others are all the same
(Island/Mango) artists covered by single-CD "Reggae Greats"
collections last year. Might wanna compare before you buy...

FWIW, the Burlington (MA) Newbury Comics has "Fire" also for $11.88.
In their case, filed under the Dead (not reggae, not compilations).

I've listened to it 3 times now. Although my first impression still holds
for me, cuts 6 through 10 provide a mighty tasty reggae/Dead suite for a

>Infrared Roses 90s	Early 90s

This addition sent me back to the Infrared & Vault topics... It's
mentioned that Infrared comes from Drums/Space's going back to the Dylan
shows. And the discussion begins November '91. So it's probably...

Fire on the Mountain..A nice compilation...
The Catfish John by Toots, Row Jimmy by Judy Mowatt and Michael
Rose(formerly of Black Uhuru?)'s version of Wharf Rat are excellent...
it seems they incorporated Jerry and Bob's licks into a bass or piano
riff and held the reggae timing down with the guitar

    Quite peculiar yet enjoyable....thumbs up

Don't remember if this has been mentioned...

David Grisman is beginning a series of Garcia/Grisman releases, with a new
one to be issued each year on Jerry's birthday (1-Aug).

[The first one is late, but Vols. 2-n should show up each 1-Aug
  thereafter.]

Quotes from Grisman (from Tower's Pulse! magazine):
"We did about 40 sessions worth of material. 1 to 4 or 5 hours each.
We recorded every time he came over...

"There's quite a wealth of great stuff there. There's jazz
instrumentals. There's country tunes. There's bluegrass. I thought it
would be appropriate every birthday to put something out for as long as
it lasts, which will be a few years."

re: Grisman and Garcia

Sounds cool. I know that during the few concerts they did together
in the last few years, they sometimes played "Sitting Here In Limbo".
I might have a somewhat hissy copy of that someplace in my great
tape pileup, but I'd love to here a decent version. Right now I have
to rely on Slipknot from the Slipnot/Zero/Hot Tuna gig at the Northboro
F&G a few years back for my Limbo fix. Not that there's anything wrong
with that ;-)

Btw, all that concert data was gathered using the Poor Man's Deadbase.
I don't got the real thing.

(Don't know if that's admirable, pathetic, or what.)

I'm holding out for the Xth edition. Yeah, that's the ticket... - JayC.

  Did you know...

That U.S. Blues debuted at the same show (2/9/73) that introduced...
Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, Here Comes Sunshine, They Love Each Other, Eyes of
the World, and China Doll? (US Blues was last of 7 new ones.)

Now *that* woulda been some kinda treat.

Surpassed only by the introduction, in one show (2/18/71), of...
Loser, Greatest Story, Johnny B. Goode, Wharf Rat, and Playing in the
Band. [Followed next night by Deal and Bird Song.] Yowza!

[This is also by way of saying that U.S. Blues is mislisted in .-3 as
debuting 2/74; I missed about 14 entries of 'Wave That Flag', from 2/73
  on, in pmDeadbase.] - JayC.

Ummm....the tune on 2/9/73 is Wave That Flag, not U.S. Blues. Same
    tune, but very different lyrics.

    Wish I had been there!

38.324Dead concert staples, w/ Deadbase datesHELIX::CLARKThu Jul 25 1996 21:53202
Well, now that I'm a proud owner of Deadbase IX...

Here's a "Dead concert staples" list that uses Deadbase IX's dates for
when each classic was first performed. It's kind of like, Deadbase's
list, but filtered an interesting way.

I disagree with their calls in a couple of places but, hey, they're in the
business, they must have good reasons for what they do/don't call a first
  public appearance of a song...

Where multiple songs debuted the same day, I vary from their practice &
list in actual order of introduction.

The most impressive mass debuts of originals have to be...
    8/18/70: Truckin', Ripple, Brokedown Palace
2/18/71: Bertha, Loser, Greatest, Wharf Rat, Playin'
10/19/71: TJed, Jack Straw, Mexicali, Comes a Time, Saturday Night, Ramble
2/9/73: Row Jimmy, Loose Lucy, HC Sunshine, TLEO, Eyes, China Doll
2/22/74: US Blues (post-Wave), Roses, Ship of Fools
    2/26/77: Terrapin, Estimated
  JayC.

LIVE STAPLES (by date of 1st appearance, live or album)

Criteria: 60 or more concert performances, with obvious gaps filled in
(Speedway, Ripple, 90s songs). Covers are marked with [.

it was only a matter of time....I'm still waitin for Phils STuff, but
will most likely get this too..

had to be in a liquor store yesterday, one that I don't usually
frequent (read:don't have a tab there) and finally saw the Dead Red
Unwine...non-alcoholic red wine ina dark bottle witha stealie on the
label...had to buy that too....but it'll stay on the shelf as i don't
    like wine and it's non-alcoholic. 15.00$

Yeah, I stumbled on the 'Dead Red' "dealcoholized red table wine" and
picked up a bottle. ($13 in Lexington.)

I tried it -- I'd guess even folks into non-alc wine would need a chaser
for this (has just enough in common with both grape juice and wine to be
neither). IMO. I'd be interested what an experienced drinker of non-alc
  beer & wine would say.

For folks who haven't seen it yet, mine had the Stealie label; forthcoming
"limited editions" will have skull & roses, dancing skels, skel & roses,
and space your face labels. (Would've preferred skull & roses for my one
& only, but was too curious to wait...) - JayC.

As for the Arista compilation... Seems not bad for what it is. Cut
selection seems generally OK, but... With cuts like Far From Me and Just
a Little Light included, you'd think they coulda found room for the likes
of Althea...? Victim or the Crime...?

Probably plays pretty well as is, though. - JayC.

:)

As for Arista - this is the 2nd thing they;ve done as a box. They put out
a 6cd (all of the disks on arista up to an including t-o-g) special limited
edition box just after t-o-g was released. no extras. no bonus tracks..
a nice book and box though.

Well, you just aren't thinking like an Arista executive (or future Digital
  VP)...

The PR copy claims the cuts "span the Grateful Dead's best recordings from
1977 - 1995, ... as well as the essential concert albums... which
contain live recordings of their earlier classics."

Looking to the live cuts... Dire Wolf, Cassidy, Feel Like A Stranger,
Franklin's Tower, & Eyes Of The World. There's your Arista's-eye view of
  the Dead first decade.

Dark Star, The Other One, et al, musta just missed the cut. 8) - JayC.

Hear hear! I got DP III ('77 show) and DP V ('79 show) about a week ago
to complete my DP collection, and they are really good, even the '77 show ;-)
The '79 Oakland show is *incredible*!! Gotta love that Estimated, the jam
afterwards, and the Caution jam! Among the rest...

Speaking of new discs, I also picked up the Butthole Surfers Electric Larryland.
Surprisingly good stuff on there, especially the psychedlic tunes, some of
which sound a LOT like old Country Joe and the Fish!

/Ken
38.341SMURF::MROGERSWed Jul 31 1996 18:148
Another vote for that Electric Larryland disc--tis good heavy stuff
with lots of Quicksilver/CJ Fish riffs on a lot of tunes. Cross a
couple of them with Beck's "Loser" and you get the idea;-)

Can't believe these guys are being played on BCN these days. Ten
years ago you couldn't even get FNX to play em. They also do an
extremely outrageous cover of "American Woman" originally done by
    the Guess Who.

Yeah, I was just following through the literal interpretation of the PR
  copy's big lie...

Looking forward to DP 6 and the Phil package of 90s stuff, myself.

Too bad Hunter & Garcia never got to follow through on that phone call
transcribed in Hunter's journal though. - JayC.

P.S. It is interesting how the Butthole S*rfers are developing...
I remember when the Phoenix would only print their name as BH Surfers.

I remember the "Hairway to Steven" CD, which up 'til the new one seemed
their most accessible and wide ranging. Kinda like Pet Sounds lyricality
crossed with Hendrix and other quotes of rock-band sounds.

I remember "name" alt. acts they opened for (that the younger majority of
the crowds had come to see) paling in comparison.

I remember them canvassing from the stage for 12-year-old girls to come
backstage after the show and, for the benefit of their accompanying
parental units, explicit descriptions of planned sexual acts...

After which concert I decided the schtick/music ratio had reached some
threshold (for me), and haven't listened a lot since. Probably will give
"Electric Larryland" a listen though. - JayC.

Gregory Isaacs does a nice cover of Sugaree.

This Vol 2, at the first couple of listens, appears to be better than the
last one. There wasn't much interpretation of the Dead songs on the last
one, just straight ahead covers. This one seems to have a bit more
interpretation.

Marcia Griffiths, Wailers...I forget who else...
