377.0. "The official old fart note (speak up young-un!)" by NECSC::LEVY (Predestined to believe in free will) Mon Oct 25 1993 19:41

Since Danielle has made me feel so ancient with her announcement of reaching the
ripe old age of 21, I've just gotta know something:

Who is the oldest old fart in the notesfile?

I believe that I'm in the running for this...errr...honor. I just turned
42 on Adam's 27th birthday. Does anyone beat that?

Is that in *real* years or *virtual* years ????

Someone had to ask :^)

Glenn_whos aged several virtual years recently with getting engaged,
selling *my* house, and living together in *her* house, suddenly being
a father to a 13 yr old daughter, witnessing the birth of my 2 month
old son, purchasing a lot and overseeing the building *our* house,
in the meantime selling *her* house (Nov 9) and getting ready to move
into a rental for a little over a month while *our* house finishes
being built (first or second week in December)....
Can you say 29 going on 49...
	I knew you could.... ;^)

I love this.

For some time I have been fascinated at the wide range of
ages in this very social group...from Danielle, who's barely
21, we range in age across what many people would consider
to be two or three generations - thirty years or more.

...and then, there's Mystery, who's been 23 for the past
17 years runnin'...;-)

Many of us seem to be in our thirties, albeit some of us
just barely...;-)

I love it.

377.32Being single has always been the pitsTRETOP::SAMILJANThu Oct 28 1993 18:2510
    Hey Deane,

Being single was the pits in the '60s, '70s and '80s, too. It's just
that you have to be a lot more careful in the '90s.

Cheer up, kid. I'll bet most of us in this conference who are hitched
didn't get married until we were in our late 20s or 30s. There's
    plenty of time.

    Bud
377.33My 2 cents....ISLNDS::CONNORS_MThu Oct 28 1993 18:4120

I disagree... I'm single and I really like it that way. I guess
it's just a mindset. I believe that if your unhappy with the way
your life is at this moment... getting married certainly isn't
going to help that - nor is being attached to someone else. You
must be happy and loving to yourself before you can share that with
someone else or make a positive impact on someone's else's life.

Dating, however, is a whole other ball game - and I will agree that
that IS the PITS! I would imagine that it always has been across
    the decades.

My humble advice to those frustrated with the dating scene is to
relax (have a homebrew), be yourself, do the things you love and
eventually (I truly believe) that that person you've (not) been
looking for will be very close by. As for how you will know them..
Well, I haven't gotten that far. I'll let you know when I figure
that minor detail out! ;-) :-)

Don't listen to him Dean :)

Being single isn't so bad. You could be married, flippin' burgers for a living
and have 6 kids at home and another on the way; arguing about $$$ and the lack
of it.

Like Bud said, Maybe what you meant was, "Being careful in the 90's is the
pits."

MJ, thanks for clarifying the point for me, which is that DATING was
the real problem, not just being single. Although I must admit, while
I never minded not being married, I'm a much happier person as a husband
and father than I was as a single male.

377.36ISLNDS::CONNORS_MThu Oct 28 1993 19:2324

Well, this point has confused me for quite some time now! I'm
certainly looking forward to the time in my life when I will
find my soul-mate and live a happily married life and have children
and grow old together and have grandchildren... etc etc etc...

But none of these things are guarantees in life so I choose to live
for what my life is today and nurturing myself into the person I
am (and am evolving into each day).

I certainly cannot say that I am happier single than I would be
married - for the obvious reason that I've never been married - so
who knows! Hopefully I can be happy regardless of my marital status.

I am happy for people like you, Bud, who have found the person
they want to share their life with - your two of the lucky ones! :-)

I agree, Dating IS the pits....it's letting someone take your heart and
rip it out and twist it around and make it bleed and then they throw it
on the ground and step on it.

I guess, that is, if you let them, which hopefully won't happen to me
    again. :(

There are a couple of good things that go with dating but they aren't
    worth it sometimes.

I like being single right now because I only have to worry about
myself and I don't have to think of anyone else but myself. I can go
wherever I want and do whatever I want. Yet sometimes I really miss being
close to somebody and sharing things with someone.

    :), danielle

377.38...BINKLY::DEMARSEUnusual occurrences in the desert...Thu Oct 28 1993 19:4811
Like I said, my viewpoint on dating and that whole scene is always
changing mainly depending on my mood...Today I have been thinking back
about the past and a particular person and that's why I've had a
    negative opinion about dating today.

When you meet somebody new, it's awesome in the beginning, getting
to know that person and etc. Yet you run into trouble when you start
to fall for that person and then it really sucks getting hurt. I guess
that is how I feel about it.

Interesting digression from old farts...;-)

I agree with MJ. Marital status has nothing to do with
happiness, and you can be happy or miserable in any
situation. I know, because I've had the 'opportunity'
to be miserable both single and married...but not anymore!

So, being single does not intrinsically suck. Being
miserable does. Finding someone to be miserable with
doesn't change things much...certainly not for the better.
Find a way clear of the misery, and being single can be
just fine...

Hey Deane, aren't you glad you brought this up? ;-)

Amen, sister.

So many people rush into a relationship with another person (whether it's
marriage or living together) without getting their own heads straight first.
The old quote about not being able to love another person until you love
yourself is true, IMO.
377.44POWDML::MACINTYREFri Oct 29 1993 13:1732
I think I've said something about this before [is there *any* subject I
haven't expressed an opinion? :-) ] but to me:

Love is the commitment to helping another to reach happiness.

Everything flows from this commitment. Personal growth, the growth of
your mate, a concern for others.

I met my wife when I was 33 and married her when I was 34.5 yrs young.
First and only marriage for me!

Single life for me was feast or famine. I had lots of dough and way
too much time. I used to travel quite a lot back then. I did a lot of
    things a lot back then.

Since my marriage, I've done a lot less of many of those things but
I've also done more of the things that make a complete human being.

You give up some things but you gain so much more in return.

    Marv
P.S. We began living together the day we were married. If a couple
wants to live together because they love each other I think that's
great. However, I don't believe the notion of "try it first before you
marry". Either you want to be married or you don't. Taking a test
    drive isn't necessary.

This is not a slam on anyone who is or has lived with someone. For me
once I decided I loved her I knew I wanted to be married. One of my
greatest pleasure is hearing myself say "This is my *wife*." or to hear
her say "This is my *husband*."

i'm with MJ...if your happy in life, you'll be happy in marriage,
you'll be happy single, you'll be happy no matter what, even if the foo
sh*ts...but if you're discontent, then the grass will always seem greener
on the other side of the fence and anything you get into won't last
    very long....

As to old farts...i'm 37, single, happy and just plain dig'in it...so
i guess i'm not yet old and in the way...

Just over 3 years ago I was single, and was not particularly interested
in the dating scene. When I saw my wife (and I had always wondered
when I would first gaze upon her) it was truly cosmic. I KNEW right
then that I had found my soulmate. You can't plan on it, the best you
can be is ready for it. I'm glad that she got the nerve to talk to me,
because I was still too shy to talk to her that day ;^)

Being married is different, lifestyles changed....some things about
being single are missed, but there were many disadvantages to being
single that are not forgotten as well. Getting married just seemed
like the right thing to do, and I feel that we've flowed well with the
stream since our two streams 'collided.'

Actually, I wasn't sure until one day when we had both ingested a healthy
amount of what we referred to as "Vitamin L". We were sitting around with music
on and both had a "vision" where we saw each other as 70-80 year olds. It felt
like the most natural thing in the world to imagine that we'd still be best
friends when we were old.

The other thing was just a feeling of fitting together well. Not the passion
or anything like that. Just a sense of things being "right" when we were
together.

Cozmic, eh?

As an offical old fart, 43 on 11/10, and married for 22 years, I agree
with MJ's point, if you are happy with yourself now, it will transfer
to your married life. I did not have "arrows from cupid" hit me when I
met my wife in College, I felt later on "it didn't get better then
this", so.... Maybe because I worshiped her from afar at first.

I am happy with being married, I would not want to be single in the

Ah yes, the night Nixon resigned! I remember it well. We held a little
ceremony on Checker's grave that night. Or I have mentioned that already?
The mind and grammar is going. Oh yes, it was a celebratory ceremony,
rather than one of mourning.

Lately, I think of life as an 80 year arc. (If you're lucky...)
Years 1-20 are spring, 21-40 summer, 41-60 autumn, 61-80 winter.

I just find it amusing to think so -- not for sober consideration... 8)
[Major course changes happened for me at ages 20 and 40, a rank
coincidinky that started this choo-choo of thought...]

The idea's kind of taken hold of me though. It doesn't depress me to be
over 40, because I decided to treat each 20-year slice o' life as a
completely separate undertaking... Esp. if that's the way the road is
leading me anyway - what the heck.

Put another way, you get 4 long/strange trips in your life, and 3 of them
are under your control. (Unless you marry unwisely in summer... or your
ungrateful progeny stick you in a home in winter... Hmm, I better get
  crackin' here in autumn! 8)

To answer the question though: Old fartdom indisputably starts at 40.
40's the midpoint of the arc, the peak of the mountain...

But ya don't all-out barrel down that proverbial Far Side, until winter... 8)
Lord knows I'm counting on fooling everyone through autumn.

Both my parents were extremely active fun seekers, teaching and traveling
throughout their 60s and 70s... My dad died at 76 while on vacation in
Monterey. From where I sit today, hell, I'd settle for that! Give me 35
more years and I'll blaze new trails in old fartdom. - JayC.
