290.0. "Tattoos...do you have one?" by SANFAN::SCOTT_RO (Dustoffthoserustystrings1moretime) Thu Aug 20 1992 20:32

I've been sitting here wondering (when aren't I ;^) about how many
Grateful Dead tattoos there are amongst us. Or any tattoo for that
    matter.

If you have one, what is it, and what made you do it. What does it
mean to you? If you *want* one, what would you get?

In the past year, I've been thinking of getting a little dancing bear
on the side of my ankle. But then I started thinking, ALOT of people
around me have a dancing bear, so I want something different. Last
night, I looked out my back window and saw the sticker there of the
terrapins playing a banjo and a tambarine (sp?) and it occured to me!
I'll get a little terrapin playing banjo on the back of my leg
near the heel, just a small one mind you! ;^)

    Now to get up the nerve! %^}

I've seen that a popular ankle tattoo is a peace sign, a happy face,
and a heart really small right in a row. Maybe replace the heart with
    a dancin' bear or terapin.

hhmmm, that's a different idea. So it kind of looks like an anklet?
As I'm sitting here looking at my ankles (yea, my ankles!) I'm thinking
I'd rather have it done on the inside ankle area, a *little* less
    noticable (you know how some people just *don't understand* ;^}

Yeah, I might chew on your ankle! :-)

Ask Lisa, she has a shroom on her ankle (no I didn't chew it, but yes, she does
have one).

The ankle seems to be a popular place for a tattoo! I like the turtle idea!

I was thinking of starting a note like this a month ago!

    I have one.

    It's a "Darmiscotta" (like a ying-yang, but made with a black
and a white dolphin) meaning 'the never ending circle of good
    and evil'.

It's on my leg about 1/2 inch above my outside left ankle bone.

My mom loved it. No one's said anything negitive about it so far!

Had it now for about 6 months. Definitely want to get more work
    done to it.

Yes, it _did_ hurt, but it was a nagging stupid pain. Afterwards
it felt like I'd cut myself with a razor for about a day.

Norm's in Pawtuckett RI does a real nice, CLEAN job.

If you want it, get it, 'cause in about 5 years it'll only cost
about $100 to get it removed if you want to.

I'll never get mine removed. It was a conscious choice, one I
can live with for the rest of my life. And hey! If I *ever* have
kids, and they have kids, they can say how cool "grandma" is!

I like my tattoo - it makes me happy. Even though Adam did threaten it once
upon a time. :-)

I had thought about getting a tattoo for years - a mushroom on my ankle, kinda
like the Allman Brothers 'shroom. Finally I decided I had been thinking too
long *not* to be serious. So I made an appointment with a very well-known
artist in New York. I walked in with a friend of mine and was immediately
drawn to all the butterflies on the wall. They were so pretty, and the colors
(a new vegatable die) were so bright and vibrant!! Well I couldn't change my
mushroom idea of five years, so I got both. The butterfly is flying over the
mushroom, looking like she's about to land. They are on the outside of my
left ankle and they are full of colors - even now, 2 years since it's been done.

I was told that the type of dye used won't fade but the best thing to do is
to take good care of it (bacitracin, no sun) for a couple of months after you
get it.

And no, it didn't really hurt, it WAS annoying though as sparky said - kinda
like a bug biting me for 45 minutes. The outline that is, the color is
nothing.  But I must say, the ankle is one of the better places to get one;
first of all you can sit comfortably while it's done, secondly it's not one of
those spots (like upper thigh or chest) that fluctautes with weight gain/loss.
My friend has a tattoo on her thigh and now, after a baby it looks like someone
drew a picture on an expanded balloon and then let the air out....

I am thinking of a second one .... (third actually I guess) - a bluebird on
my shoulder. :-)

My advice is to think about it until you are really sure, cause they don't
come off as easily as they go on.

I've got one too... got it about 5-6 years ago. Mine is right
near my hip bone, kinda in the crease of my leg - not visible
unless I'm in a bathing suit, or nekkid of course. It's of
a flower (kinda like a daisy) with long vine like stems coming
out of each side w/a few leaves. It is only about 2 inches in
length and 1/2 inch diameter. I like it. It has faded alittle
bit and probably could use a touch up on the colors, the petals
are white, middle yello and leaves green, but I don't think I'll
be rushing out to get it done anytime soon. I got kinda sick
when I got it. No, I wasn't under the influence of anything but
I tend to have a very weak/nervous stomach and I passed out when
I got it! (don't mean to scare anyone who is thinking of getting
    one - I'm just a wimp!) ;-)

I usually get comments like "is that a REAL tattoo?" and stuff
    like that. Pretty funny.

The first person I told about it in my family was my grandmother
and her first question was "is it a snake?" but after she saw
    it she liked it.

I've wanted a tattoo for a long time. I've found the design I want.
    It's a painting by Georgia O'Keefe. It's a black petunia against a
white petunia. I may have the white petunia done in pale pink. I'd
like to have it just above my knee. I found the artist, he does my
son's tattoos. Now I just need the courage.

Well, I got my tattoo while I was in San Francisco. It's a little
dancing bear (couldn't find a terrapin) that's a bright turquiose with
maroon for the little tuft of hair. It's kicking his leg dancing and
it's on the inside of my right ankle. I seem to disagree with everyone
whose had one, the coloring hurt the worst! Next time (ok, so MAYBE
there will be another..;^) I will only get an outline....HA!

It's still really red and at the moment pussing all over (yuck!!). The
redness is creeping down from the tat a little...kind of like blood
poisoning..eeek! Just called a parlor, and he thinks I'm just having a
reaction to what I'm using on it...some kind of lotion FILLED with all
kinds of natural herbs and such. Switching to Neosporin (verrrrry
sparingly) and if it doesn't clear up by tomorrow well then.....but all
in all...I'm still verrry glad I got it. Cant' wait to see my mom's
face when she sees it!! She thought I was crazy for wanting one in the

Rochelle,

I hate to say it but did you ensure that the place where you had your tattoo
done was using clean needles? Where I went he opened the needle new for me
and threw it away after he was done. That coupled with the fact that he was
a world known artist (of tattoos) made it a bit more expensive but it was
worth it, and still is close to two years later. Anyway, I did the bacitracin/
change the dressing twice a day thing for however long he told me to and all
was fine. You are probably just getting an infection. Keep it moist with
ointment such as bacitracin and clean gauze and you should be OK. Do you
have sensitive skin, it kinda sounds that way. Don't worry....

Yes Rochelle! No Neosporin -- bacitracin. But first, clean
it with soap and water! Keep a gauze pad on it, but make
sure there is always a layer of bacitracin on. After the
first 3 days, no more gauze but plenty of bacitracin.

Don't play with it, don't scratch, don't pick, don't do
    anything.

Sounds like this guy wasn't that clean. Mine threw away all
his needles too. Sterilized them in an oven before opening
    the package even!

Might want to go to a more reputable artist and see what they
have to say. Your doctor may not have an answer.

Well, just got back from the doctors'. I've got a severe infection, I

The place I went is verrry reputable. Maybe some of you have heard of

who did it, and the dye is mineral based non-toxic whatever. I was
there as he took the needles out of the sterile package...not taking a
chance of catching anything, especially in San Fran!! He said NO
bandages, not to use ointments of any kind, just to let it dry out.

IT HAD BETTER NOT RUIN THE TATTOO!! I'll be majorly bummed! This
costed me $70. This place charges $100 an hour, a little above the
average, but as I said before, this was a verry reputable place.

Speaking of charges.....I'm warning the men right now, sqeeze your

In the list of charges, and the wording is rather funny, it lists:
If tattooing the penis, there will be an additional $200 handling
charge above the cost of the tattoo.

OUCH!! I saw a picture of one (a nice one at that! ;^> ) with a pretty
intricate design. I want to know just how they would do that, and um,
well, how would they tattoo it so that the design wouldn't er, stretch?

    rochelle
290.4011SRUS::MARKWaltzing with BearsThu Aug 27 1992 00:2827
Hope that infection clears up soon, rochelle!

>how would they tattoo it so that the design wouldn't er, stretch?

Wouldn't the point be to have it so the design was normal under
conditions suited to stretch, and partially obscurred, otherwise? Which
reminds me...

There was a guy who was engaged to a woman name Wendy. He was so
enamoured of her, that he decided to have her name tatooed onto him. Now,
under normal conditions, his tatoo read "WY". However, when Wendy inspired
him, the whole tatoo, "WENDY" was visible.

Well, he and Wendy got married. For their honeymoon, they went to
Jamaica. While there, they went to a nude beach. Now, after some time in
the heat of the afternoon, Wendy is getting thirsty. Our hero gallantly
goes to the bar to fetch them something cold to drink. Since this resort
doesn't want to make the patrons uncomfortable, the staff dresses (or rather
doesn't) in the manner of the guests. While waiting for the drinks, Wendy's
husband notices that the bartender has a "WY" showing in the same place that
he does! "Wow, I had my wife's name tatooed on me, and it's 'WENDY'. Does
yours say 'WENDY', too?"

The bartender fixes him with a withering gaze. "No, it says 'WELCOME
TO JAMAICA, HAVE A NICE DAY'."

got it, and picked out the rudest one they had.

it's a devil's face, with a naked woman sitting spread eagle with
the devil licking her.....pretty nasty eh? His mother cried when
she saw it.....and of course he got it just above the elbow where
    it's easily visable.

A few of us saw a woman at the Grafton Flea Market with a very large (I'd say
10 inches) tattoo of a man taking a leak below her shoulder blade on her back.
It was very detailed you saw his um, pee-er (that with which he pees :-) and a
stream of, well you know and below the "puddle" on the bottom was the word
"Plunk".

I have a steal your face on my left shoulder-only cost $40 and
looks great. I'm thinking of getting a bear with a guitar on the
      other shoulder-I play...

Good one Tim! But that's why I use those tatoos from the cracker jacks
boxes,,,they last at least a week, even with showers!!
