113.0. "The All new bumper stickers note!" by LEDS::MRNGDU::YETTO (child of countless dreams) Mon Feb 04 1991 17:05

Hmmn, I couldn't find a bumper stickers note so here 'tis...

usually I chuckle at the bumper stickers I see, even if
I don't at all agree with, or admire them. However today
I saw a very disturbing one. It's intent perhaps is a noble
one but it's message is very poorly worded. I don't even
	like thinking about it...

		Shoot people, not drugs

Oooh, it gives me the creeps!

	"KILL THE TELEVISION"

Sure made my day since TV ain't on my top 40.
113.26KILL YOUR TELEVISION!!!DEMING::SYMONDSWed Mar 13 1991 18:4516

Yeah, i like that one too!! TV (with *minor* exceptions) is for
people with labotomies! If you're willing to let other people
choose your entertainment for you and shape your views about the
the way life *really* is (how is it anyway?) then you may as well
        just punt!

Especially with these goddam clickers these days!! Talk about
couch potato mush mind society!! People literally don't move or
talk to other people, or remember that there ever was anything else
        to do before television ....

pheeewwwww! I feel better now, thank you!

113.27point/counterpoint ... sort of ... ;^)BOOKS::BAILEYBSmilin' on a cloudy dayWed Mar 13 1991 20:3837
Kill your television ?!?!? Time for a rebuttal ...

Television has it's proper place in society. Why if it weren't for TV,
many of us would never get to watch a Celtics game. Now, while most of
you probably would shrug and say "big deal", for some of us it is a big
deal. Personally I get as much of a blast out of watching the game
played by professionals as I do out of attempting to do it myself.
And YOU try getting Celtics tickets these days ... ;^) ;^)

As to letting somebody else choose your entertainment for you ... well
you always have control over what you watch, and when you watch it. So
I can't see the validity of that argument. Same goes for the remote.
If it bothers you, let it sit there. It won't get up and start
    switching channels all by itself.

I agree that some (most) TV programming is mindless brain rot. But
you don't have to watch that stuff. There is also plenty of quality
programming to choose from for those who are so inclined, not to
mention news and weather information and educational programming. (I
still prefer to watch Celtics games though) ... ;^)

One can argue that TV presents a warped sense of reality, but that
doesn't mean you have to accept it as such. That's YOUR choice ... if
you think the media is trying to shape your views, then YOU can make the
choice not to take them seriously and there ain't a damn thing they can
do about it. So they're not controlling you unless you choose to let
    them do it.

It's a nice slogan and all, but the concept of "killing your
television" is basically the same as burning books. You don't agree
with the content so you destroy it so nobody else has the option.
Sorry, I don't agree. There's plenty on TV that's beneficial, even for
those of us without lobotomies ... ;^)

    						... Bob

PS - I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotamy.
113.28EZRIDR::SIEGELThe wheel is turningWed Mar 13 1991 21:059
Yeah, besides, PBS, A&E, Discovery, and Nick at Nite are quite respectable, in
my opinion. Even Nick at Nite's self-promoting commercials are a riot!

I agree that most mainstream TV is brain rot, just like most mainstream radio
is ear rot. Ya just gotta poke around...

I enjoy a bunch of stuff on TV, particularly nature related programming
and cooking shows, music stuff. Most of the other is ridiculous BS, but
they all come equipped with a channel selector and an on/off switch.

I do respect people who can discipline themselves and not watch the thing or
don't even own one.

I can do without it, but there are times I really do enjoy it.

Well, I'm one who does not really like the TV that much. However, I do agree
that there is a lot of decent stuff on the tube that will suck you in just like
a vacuum sucks up dust.

That is the problem I have w/ TV. I see people who get sucked into the tube
spending many hours watching, and, doing what appear to me as NOTHING ... all
of those commercials that are on the tube must have a brainwashing effect
after a while.

I figure that time is a very precious resource that is going to run out
eventually. Rather than sit in front of the tube doing nothing, why not
do something else that is more useful to you or society? I suppose it is
a matter of priorities. TV is not a very intellectual thing, IMO, which
seems to be the biggest problem I have w/ it.

This is the JC outlook on the TV; may or may not jive with your prerogative.
I really get annoyed when I have friends over that want to watch TV...

Don't read books - you'll be brainwashed into thinking just what the
    author wants you to!

TV is worth having if only to watch The Simpsons. Despite the hype,
the series has gotten better and better, and it's the only thing on
that I would stay home for. Tonight's episode is a repeat of "Itchy &
Scratchy & Marge," about cartoon violence and what happens when Marge
tries to restrict it. A real dig at the woman from Minnesota(?) who
started a campaign against Married With Children by complaining to the
show's sponsors. If you haven't given the show a chance, watch it
tonight. But don't blame me if you're brainwashed into buying pounds
and pounds of Krusty Pork Products!!

      yeah, yeah, yeah....

Seems to me that if I spent $50. /month to get any of these programs
worth watching, I may have a better feeling about the boob toob.

I won't deny that there are some things worth watching - its more
the addictive `suck you up like a vacuum sucks dust'(I like that
      one!) that gets me.

A bunch of friends went in on a skihouse this winter - the owner
left us everything *but* the TV. I was wayyyy psyched, but a
couple others were just appauled (sp?) that they may have to find
something else to do after skiing! `What else is there?'

Over the season its worked out really well ... now everyu saturday
night is `jam night'! Originally, 4 of 9 people were musicly
inclined; since they have no tube to resort to, now *everybody*
is getting into the jams either vocally, electricly, acousticly,
maroccaly (?), etc... There are even 2 other houses which come
over often to join in..... Do I attribute this all to the lack
of a tv set???? Sounds like it, doesn't it? No, course not,
but it sure helped. But at least we've answered the question
for some people of `what else is there?'

I've never been skiing on an overnight trip, although if Florida
doesn't start taking recycling more seriously, we may be able to ski on
'Mt. Trashmore' in a few years. So, naturally, I have all sorts of
fantasies to answer this question which, at least according to John
Ryan's notes earlier, are all still illegal.

I guess I'm just gonna hafta a.) lobby for legalization, b.) find an
excuse to go north during the winter, and c.) leave the TV at home!:-)

Well, I ski almost every week-end. And after a day of flinging myself
off of any obstacle that gets in my way, and terrorizing the local
woodland creatures (I like to ski in the woods, 'cause that's where all
the powder is), I'm generally too tired to do much besides go back to
the house, pop in a tape, consume some oat bran, and get mellow.

We don't have a TV at our ski house either. But sometimes I wish we
did, along with a VCR, so I could sit there and watch videos of people
who really know how to ski. It's always a fun way to spend the evening
after abusing your body all day on the slopes.

That is exactly the problem I have with the tube. My roommates would gather
around the 13" B/W, smoke cigarettes, and watch what I thought was content-free
trash (General Hospital)...

ANYDAY, I'd rather sit around, crank up some tunes, open a few brews, consume
oat bran and play a couple of games... there is not interaction with the TV.

Everyone has thier own form of relaxation and entertainment, like it or not.

Equating a person who watches the tube with a person who has had a lobotomy
is a pretty mindless generalization, IMO.

Lisa

PS. I like lots of stuff on the Discovery channel and A&E to learn something
by and use as a foundation reference for when I do more research at the library
(imagine that, a television set sparking my intellect and sending me to the

=#= So there I was, trapped in one of those newfangled
automobiles in San Francisco's own newfangled automobile
Hell (a.k.a. Route 101), along with billions of fellow
cheap petroleum enthusiasts. And I noticed an elaborate
bumper sticker right on the newfangled bumper in front
of me.

=#= A gem, it was, one of those lovingly-crafted odes to
patriotism that sold so well last January and February
(thanks mostly to the huge marketing campaign on the
nightly news). It said, of course, "Support Operation
Desert Storm." And it had an American Flag on it. It
also (presumbly for good measure) said, "These Colors
Don't Run."

=#= Except that they had. The flag itself was washed
out, and the bumper sticker (and bumper) was festooned
with blotches of red and blue dye.

Driving down the Garden State Pkwy over Memorial Day Weekend.
Got behind a (american) van.

The van had the following on the back...

A "I support the Gulf War blah, blah, blah..." bumper sticker.
A licence plate in the left rear window that read:
"Unemployed? Hungry? Then eat your Japanese car!"
Another licence plate in the left rear window, just below the 1st one:
"I'd rather be riding my Honda!" (had a picture of a guy on a bike).

I kid you not!

I felt like stopping the guy and asking him if he realized that Honda motorcycles
were made in Japan?

Anyone been watching the "Made In America" series on PBS? The country

Whoops, I guess I wasn't clear. Thank god for these asbestos undies... :-)

We've been through this before, that it is very unclear exactly what is an
imported cars vs. what is an american car. Maybe it is unfair of me, but I
usually assume when I see anti-imported-vehicular-propaganda (tm), that the
person who pastes it on their car assumes "American company ===== American car!
Foriegn company =====- Foriegn car!"

So, given that assumption...What I saw on the van was

Buy from an American car company, dammit!
Japanese bikes are great, dammit!

So does Honda make anything in Japan anymore?
(rhetorical question!) :-)

I wasn't tring to flame ya, Dave. Heck...never flame a Dave in a
conference full-o-dave's! ;-) It just seemed that ya didn't know
that some H*nda's are made in 'merica.

I'll admit, though, that I get very very touchy about motorcycle brand
wars, particularly the 'merican iron versus rice burner wars. I think
this is simply because I don't get it...I love all of 'em. Also,
motorcyclists have enuf enemies in local/state/federal government and
other "do goodie" organizations that it seems *stoopid* fer
motorcyclists to be "fighting" amongst themselves. But I digress.

For what it is worth, Dave, I have seen several instances of Harley
stickers in the back windows of Japanese trucks/cars. I get somewhat
the same reaction from this as you did from the H*onda sticker on the
'merican cage. Kind of a "you missed the point, didn't ya?" feeling.

Speaking of Russia - I was reading yesterday how their currency is so
screwed up, the ruble is nearly worthless in Russia, even more
worthless in the international markets, yet their salaries are almost
the same as they were prior to the breakup. As an example it costs

Ice-9 is water with a wierd isotope that is solid at reg temps,
and crystalizes to make the world one large skating rink.

From a Vonnegut novel, don't remember which one...

There are eight described molucular configuraetions for frozen water. Ice-9 is
the fictional ninth configuration that was the central theme in a Kurt Vonnugut
Jr. novel (forget which one).

The publishing company that owns the rights to all the Dead's originals is Ice
Nine Pub. Co.

I had a feeling there'd be a rush for that one.

I think it was Breakfast of Champions, but it's been a long time. I
know it isn't Slaughterhouse Five. I read a whole bunch of his stuff
back in the mid-70's, which for the usual reasons like age, sex,
drugs and other distractions, is pretty much a blur these daze...;-)

It seemed to come out about the time that real science was recovering
from the so-called "Polywater" hoax - there was actually a scientific
theory that water under extremes of temperature and pressure would
polymerize into a liquid that had very non-water attributes, like, say,
flowing uphill.;-) They even thought they had artificially produced
some of the stuff in the lab. Turned out to be totally wrong. Sort of
like the cold fusion theory of late. That was in the late 60's.

From what I recall, one of Vonnegut's premises for the 9th
configuration was that it was a polymer which, when it came into
contact with other molecular configurations of H2O, would cause those
molecules to 'join' the polymer, converting all water into unusable
Ice-9, i.e., spread across the globe, take over the world, if you will.
The idea that the Dead used this as the name for their music publishing
company was therefore very entertaining to me...:-)

a long drive home, and the kids and wife appreciate it when I
show up at a reasonable hour ;-) (of course, tonight, I'll have to

The other possibility is SouthEast Asia, which is a slight bit

some of the Littleton DECheads too. Should we move this to the

there brew leaves much to be desired. all of it is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
too light. even the stout ! i thought i was drinking colored light beer.

now, this was late last year. perhaps things have changed. when i was

had the same character, etc...

Martha's had a Scotch Ale at the Boston Brew fest which of the 40 beers I
tasted, was best of show. My guess its OG was around 1.060. It was carbed
correctly for the sytle, too.

Also, they are in the process of adding capacity, which should allow them
to offer a wider range of brews and keep up with demand for their current
brews.

I enjoyed that beer too, but I detected a hint of papaya in the nose
that was very inappropriate for style. I agree that the carbonation
level was correct, but only because it was served too cold. At the
proper serving temperature it would have been overcarbonated. Not to
mention that a true Scotch ale should have a hint of smoky peat on the
mid-left side of the tongue (those taste receptors are lcoated very
    close to each other).

No joke, I was at a Boston Wort Processors meeting (an unholy union
between a fraternity and the Boston Computer Society) and watched an
esteemed beer judge pass judgement on a neophyte's beer. He swirled it
around His mouth, crinkled up His nose, then swirled it some more.
With furrowed brow and crossed eyes, He finally swallowed. He stared
off into space as the neophyte, headed bowed, awaited the sentence.
Finally His eyes locked onto the neophyte's, who squinted in His
radiance. "I TASTE PAPAYA," He said. The neophyte quietly slunk off
    and hasn't been seen since.

I've been known to stop by Martha's now and then. Their beer's improved
since last year. For example, the stout has improved although it's still
thin and served too cold. There was an artivle in Newsweek 2 weeks ago
about brewpubs in which Martha's was mentioned. The person from Martha's
said they keep their beers like as many of their patrons work at the Bud
plant. Last week when I was there I mentioned the article to one of the
bartenders that and suggested that they should serve Bud to those who want
it and that they should really differentiate their beer form the big
brewery swill. He seemed to like the idea and said he'd pass it along (I'm
not holding my breath).

Food there isn't bad. Basic fare of soups, salads, sandwiches and a few
other entrees.

Yah, that's an interesting RFB, do you have more cars than I have boats??
Lets see I can only count 4 at the house right now, but there's a
fifth on the way. I guess that's not a hard number to beat. I guess the more
unknown greater quantity wuld be wheather we have more sails or skis at
the house?I guess we'll need to get a canoe, kayaks and a Sunfish for
Megann if we want to keep up with RFB's car count.

Okay, it's the first day of spring and Im anxious to use a boat!

well Rich and Geoff, I actually dumped one not too long ago..sold my
78 yellow toyota P.U. with camper shell to a kid who drove it to AZ. to
attend Devry Institute of Technology, where I went to school eons ago.

    I still have:
    1.Mean Green Machine - 1970 Chevy 3/4ton 4x4 P.U with shell
2.Old Scout or Sally Scout as my kids dubbed her years ago - 1978 ScoutII
3.my newest, yet unnamed, 1980 Subaru GL sedan front wheel drive
4.my daughter drives a 1979 Subaru DL wagon, front wheel drive
5.my wife drives a 1985 Ford Donkey II 4x4 "sports utility vehicle"
(read "real dog", but she loves it)

They all run, but the Scout is unlicensed, I plan on parking it at
Tumbledown this spring (DOOOHH! that was yesterday!) so's I have a real
4x4 always at the cabin, we used Patty's Donkey way too much for heavy
duty 4 wheelin last year and a couple of times those front hubs got
REAL hot! Come to think about it, my Chevy truck is also unlicensed!

A friend of mine wants me to buy his 80's Volvo, but I can't afford it
right now. and I saw an old cadilac for sale for 400$ a couple of
days ago! I always wanted an old caddy to trash with dead stickers.

I've deleted my note due to (un)popular demand. Sorry for offending
some folks (gee, I've never had to say that in here before :-)). A
    couple of quick points:

My uncle (and great uncle before him) runs a crematory, so death humor
has probably been more common in my life than most folks'.

It was nobody's thought but mine. It popped into my head a couple of
days ago as a play on the "The Fat Man Rocks" bumperstickers and I
thought more than twice, but obviously not enough, about posting it.
My original idea was to tell one person and wait and see how long
    before I heard it again.

Back to the topic, I recently saw: "Warning: Driver May Be Experiencing
    A Hot Shakedown."

I wear my Focus on Gefilte Fish T-shirt regularly. It was a limited
edition run; Jewish Voices for Justice (I am a cofounder) created them
as a fundraiser and sold them at the Diversity Fair a couple years ago
and at Poor Richards. We just decided last week to do another run of
them. There were/are actually three versions. One of them has just
the stuff on the front that you saw. The second version has a
follow-on phrase, on the back, that says "We want to shove our values
down your throat." The third has the Rodney King "Why can't we all

here in Colo SPgs, because of the influx of christian orgs into the
city, there's quite a few vehicles that have the fish symbol on them.
And because of the few brave souls that have the cahones to stand up to
the moral right (or moral wrong, depending on how you look at it) the
fish symbol with legs and the words Darwin on the middle are quite
popular also. Well, yesterday I saw a new one...the fish symbol with
the letters PHISH in the middle next to a bumper sticker, that I assume
is a lyric, "Why can't I have fun while I'm young"..or something like
that....thought some of you PHISHHEADS might think that cool...but
you're probably way ahead of me and already know about this....

    rfb_
did i ever tell anyone that Tiffany hung out with PHISH here in
COlorado Spgs for an hour or two before they played there one and only
Springs gig??? She said they were really nice and a little weird...

Ever heard of the Church of Euthanasia? They go by the motto
'suicide abortion cannibalism sodomy'. They have some pretty cool
bumper stickers out. While wandering through the web last night,
I came across their home page:

Here are some of the bumper stickers they've created:

you can click on an icon for their catalog. It'll take you to a page
