1303.0. "Question for the Day" by YUPPY::CONNELLA () Fri May 26 1995 13:14

My question for the day is what has happened to Simply Red??( reminded
cause Chris Evans played the excellent Stars this morning and some git
pinched my CD two years ago)

They haven't had anything out for years now (1991??) have they split
for good or are they on some Island "being creative"??

Simply Red have spent 2 million years recording a new album at Air
Studios in London, they finished it about 9 months ago.
The album will not be very good, because Charlie Drake appears to be on
    lead vocals.
1303.5i think not !WOTVAX::STONEGTemperature Drop in Downtime Winterland....Fri May 26 1995 14:595

....no doubt Simply Red will be in for the same criticism which the
    Stone Roses got then ?

Sorry but someone here has to stick up for 'em. Mick Hucknell has a
fantastic voice and can come out with some damn good songs when he
wants to. Saw them at Wembley Stadium a couple of years ago and they'd
wipe the floor of several of the groups mentioned in this conference.

So they are actually still around then.(oh Hi Liz by the way, nice to
speak to you the other week) Does anyone have a release date for the
new album?? I agree, I've been a fan since "money's too tight to
mention", I think Mick Hucknall has got a great voice, I loved
Wonderland on Stars, in fact I must re-purchase that CD.

    >>they'd wipe the floor of several of the groups mentioned in this
    >>conference. ^^

They're not that desperate for money are they?

Presuming you mean "with several of the groups mentioned in this
conference" I'm curious as to how you would define "wipe the floor
with" when you're talking about something as subjective as music.
Technical ability? Possibly, but what does that count for? How much you
like them? Likely, but that's no proof of their floor-wiping ability.

    Phil Gill.

> Martyn Ware or Ian Craig Marsh?

No, I didn't mean Heaven 17 did I? They're great, got the cheapo greatest
hits thing, I meant that other band that I always confuse with Heaven 17,
similar meaning names, blond guy with a bass and a guy with black curly
hair on keyboards who wears one of those headset mics, umm, no, lost it
completely. Help!

That's it! Yeah. So boring I can't remember their name. My basic point was
that you can pack your band with people who are technically talented, but
technique doth not a groove make.

Guy

I liked some of Level 42's stuff when I was about 14, but they
went downhill after the release of `Living It Up' or whatever
the thing was called that they released in about '83.

    re. Level 42

Nah, I saw them at Glastonbury in 86 and they were still bloody good
then. It all went a bit downhill after that. My question for the day
is where is Chesney Hawks, he of the anagram, Cheesy Whanks, fame?

I never heard that Mick was one of the "gang" as it were, in fact there
were always rumours about his latest conquest..

I still think they're great (cause they're NORTHERN!!!!!) But I'm
relieved that they are still around (bless em) As far as wiping the
floor with everyone, I know where Liz is coming from. It does seem to
be a bit of "who is hip and who's not" and if you happen to appreciate
or like a band that doesn't fit the 'rules' of ie are they nationally
popular if yes- they're crap??? then it's take the crap (good humoured as
it may and as *I* certainly take it that way (or Take That) ); but has it
occured that I (and Liz?) find it as ridiculous having heard some of the
    other
"favourite" bands that you actually can sit and listen to them, let alone
    spend money on their music.

As Phil Gil said, musical taste is an individual thing, but it does
seem to be an almost dare I say it 'PC' music notes file- the obscure the
    better????

Andrea (a bit controversial but there you go) ha!!!!!

Not as ridiculous as suggesting that one band can "wipe the floor" with
    another.

I think I understand what you're trying to say. I have little interest
in most of the bands discussed in here at the moment, but I do enjoy
reading about what other people are listening to, their musical interests,
etc, even yours Andrea! I wouldn't dream of suggesting who or what is
"the best", only which ones I enjoy most.

Just having a chat about Manchester Bands etc, and my question now is
whatever happened to James (oh sit down...etc) I haven't heard them for
ages and I used to get drunk and listen to their music when I was about
17/18. (happy college days ) Where are they now??

    Andrea.

Hmmm. James last 'conventional' album was Laid which came out about 2
years ago, maybe a bit less. Since then they have released a more
'unconventional' album of Brian Eno produced snippets from the Laid
sessions. The title of this album escapes me, but I'm sure someone like
Mikef will be able to add more details.

I saw James in Finsbury Park about 2 years ago (supporting Neil Young),
they were excellent, better than I remember. They used to play in our
local night club all the time, the lead singer (can't remember his
name) used to get all frenzied and rip his shirt into shreads all the
time, don't know what his mother thought of all this, but that was
about 6-7 years ago. ah those were the days.....

A friend of mine met Mick Hucknell about 2 months ago in a supermarket
car park, he was sat in his van listening to something or another when
mick came over and asked him what he was listening to and how he
couldn't believe how good the sound was in his van(????) they had a
lengthy conversation about the acoustics of a renault and off he
    went.... Um very strange.

Presumably the recording of the vocals for the next Simply Dross lp will
take place in the back of a van. Still, can't make them any worse than
    a recording studio would.

I'd go for Wanna - dyes, but I don't really have anyomre of a clue than
you do ! You could go by what they're called on the Radio, but having
heard 'Orbital' called 'The Orbital' (M25 perhaps ?) then that's just
as likely to be wrong as your own interpretation. Of course, if you
want to appear 'clued up' then try calling them 'The Wannas' (as in
