    Interesting list...

I like the Oasis album, but I don't think its very groundbreaking or
different, conservative with a small 'c'.

Black Grape I like a lot, but I think the non-singles lose it a
little. Couurtney Pine - some tracks are v good, some others are a
    little tame for my taste.

I'd like to hear the Beltane Fire album.

I would probably go for Underworld, or maybe Help for sentimental
reasons (although there are a lot of very good trax on there).

Mmm, I have similar reservations, Blur's Great Escape Album, is easily
as good an album as the Oasis one. THnak god there is no M People type
album this year. Dance, once again, seems to have been extremely mis-
represented, where's the album of challenging Drum 'n' Bass for
    example?

    Altogether mmmm,

(See, didn't mention Fuzzy Logic by Super Furry Animals once, oh
    knickers!)

Who are Mark Morrison and Norma Waterson?

Mark Morrison: semi-famous, soul singer, recent number one with 'Return
of the Mack' (not a song about a missing raincoat)
Norma Waterson: finger in the ear folkie type.

Can someone remind me what the point of this award is? Is it something to do
with recording quality, or is it just the music? How canthey compare such a
variety of styles?

I'd say it has a lot to do with who the record companies are tryingf to
promote - note the inclusion (not!) of recent albums by bands who
    aren't household names....

The Norma Waterson album isn't that great. Norma is married to Martin
Carthy who has been a leading light of the folk movement since the
    early 60s.

Oh, undoubtedly, but what's the OFFICIAL reason?! Why set up this as well as
the Brits[sic]?

I believe this was meant to be a 'Booker Prize' type thing for British
music. Initially it worked quite well, i.e. Screamadelica by Primal Scream
got one, but since M People won one for a nasty handbag album to get
the 'normal' records buyers interested, it's turned into an excuse to
push a couple of albums during a traditionally slack time in record
    sales.

A top album too, well deserved. Though I have finally manged to
aquaint myself with Everything Must GO (MSP) and it's on my playlist of
the month. Take That were nominated for Mercury award a couple of
years back, I don't remember who beat them though...
