Let's use this note to discuss Exchange Clustering stuff.

Until we had the visit of a Microsoft Technologist from Paris this
morning (also a friend of mine), I thought Exchange was not ready to
incorporate ANY clustering features until maybe V6.0.

However our Microsoft Insider this morning stated that Exchange 5.0
(Yes 5.0) is postponed 1 month to incorporate failover capabilities.

I have always got goos information from this guy.

Any other information?

    I think your information is accurate. The Microsoft Wolfpack group
    says they will have "simple Exchange failover" when Wolfpack V1.0
    ships. I think this means you can have Exchange server running on a
    single node in the cluster. When failover occurs, Exchange server
    starts on the other node.

    This is similar to what we proposed doing for Digital Clusters, but
    there were not enough engineering resources to work on it.
643.2No Exchange Failover for Digital Clusters?GUIDUK::HEALYAlan Healy @ZSOThu Feb 20 1997 23:596
    Carl,
    I understood there was a chance that some sort of Exchange failover
    might be possible in Digial Clusters 1.1. It looks like this is not
    the case?

643.3Need reduncdant system?NETRIX::"rushc@mail.dec.com"Chris RushFri Feb 28 1997 06:377
Does this mean that you would need a system sitting there doing nothing. We
have an implementation with two Exchange servers (4100s). Would I have to buy
a third to provide cluster failover or indeed two further systems?

643.4Use standby system for other server workDECWET::CAPPELLOFMy other brain is a polymerFri Mar 14 1997 22:579
    re .-1
    In order to use "simple Exchange failover" feature promised for
    Wolfpack V1.0, you would have to have 2 additional servers - each pair
    would be a cluster. The second system in each cluster can't run
    Exchange while it's running on the first system, but it can do other
    useful work.

    MS's grand plan is to allow Exchange to run on both servers at the same
    time, in a future version of Exchange.
