85.0. "Second Blessing/Perfection" by CUPCSG::SMITH (Passionate committment/reasoned faith) Thu Oct 25 1990 22:43

    Another topic that was debated in my youth in my part of the country
    related to the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the "Second Blessing" and
    "going on to perfection." The idea was (is?) that after being saved,
    there is a second blessing that is the coming of the Holy Spirit into
    your heart and life.

    Proponents based their belief both on Scripture and on the sermons of
    John Wesley.  (And perhaps others?)

    You no longer sin -- this was explained as being like a mother who
    physically *could* drop her infant on the sidewalk but actually *never
    would* do such a thing because of her love for it.

    Have you heard of this belief? Do any of you believe this teaching?

    Nancy

This is also known as the "double cure", mentioned in the hymn "Rock of Ages".

Some also believe in a "triple cure", where the third is a general
sanctification process.

Most non-theological types assume a single cure, nowadays.
