394.0. "Ways of Praise, mural suggestions..." by TFH::KIRK (a simple song) Tue Jan 21 1992 11:31

Hi all,

I've been asked/volunteered (you probably know how that can go .-) to work on
a mural for a wall of our church nursery. The theme doesn't necessarily
need to be religious, (the other walls will apparently be Seasame Street (tm)
wallpaper) but I wanted to keep along spiritual lines anyway.

While listening to the Christian Education report at our annual Parish meeting
the theme came to me, "Ways of Praise".

It struck me as an open theme, which I like, affording lots of input from
people to consider ways in which God can be praised, not only in our parish
lives, but in our lives outside the church as well.

I'm working on some sketches to give the other people who will be involved and
our pastor an idea of what we might do.

I envision a panorama of people of all sorts, each engaged in praising God.
Some fairly obvious ways might be singing, dancing, teaching, bringing meals
to shut-ins, hugging, et cetera.

I've asked some people in my parish for ideas, and I would like to expand that
here. What are some of the ways you praise God?

They just may be immortalized in a nursery mural.
(Okay, Michelangelo I'm not!)

Peace,

Jim

    Hi Jim,

Whenever I am in nature I praise God. Working in a garden, hiking
through the woods, admiring clouds or a beautiful sunset... Sometimes
when I am awe struck with the beauty of nature I do a body prayer. One
of my favorite poses is with arms over my head in an arch, palms toward
the heavens, feet rooted firmly on the earth. (I often feel I have
wings in this pose.) And in this pose I say hello and give thanks,
feeling the energy from the heavens flow down through my body
    and into the earth.

...Sounds like a great project you 'volunteered' for!

    Best wishes!

How about an image of a few children bending down in a playground,
feeding a pigeon or two, with outstretched hands tossing some bread
crumbs. The children have that unspoiled giggle bursting forth from
their faces. You know what I mean, you've seen that look!

Realizing such images exist during some of your quiet times is one way
    to praise God.

    	Shalom,

Jim,

I don't have any ideas to add, but I wanted to suggest a few things to remember:

Include lots of animals: dogs, cats, birds. At certain ages, according to the
studies I've read, children identify more with animals than with humans.

Make the mural multi-racial.

Include a figure who is physically challenged. I, for one, appreciate the
inclusion of a boy in a wheelchair in the characters Burger King is presently
using in their advertising.

Why include these things?

Well, the underlying message is that God's love is boundless.

Peace,
Richard
