864.0. "What is a Eucharistic Minister?" by COVERT::COVERT (John R. Covert) Sat Feb 19 1994 02:40

Canon II.2.5(a). A Lay Eucharistic Minister is a person licensed to
this extraordinary ministry. The Lay Eucharistic Minister shall have
one or both of the following functions, as specified in the license:

  (1). Administering the elements at any Celebration of the Holy Eucharist
  in the absence of a sufficient number of Priests or Deacons assisting
  the celebrant;

  (2) Directly following a Celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Sunday
  or other Principal Celebrations, taking the Sacrament consecrated at
  the celebration to members of the Congregation who, by reason of
  illness or infirmity, were unable to be present at the Celebration.

(b). Qualifications, requirements, and guidelines for the selection,
training, and use of Lay Eucharistic Ministers shall be established by
the Bishop.

(c). This ministry is not to take the place of the ministry of Priests
and Deacons in the exercise of their office, including regular visitation
of members unable to attend the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist. A Lay
Eucharistic Minister should normally be under the direction of a Deacon
of the Congregation, if there be one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Unless there is a special need, Lay Eucharistic Ministers generally perform
only the function of chalice bearer at the Eucharist. The Priest or Deacon
will generally always deliver the Body of Christ both at the Eucharist and
to the infirm, except under special circumstances. Requirements may vary
from diocese to diocese.

864.1Appreciation for Eucharistic MinistersCSC32::J_CHRISTIEI'm 2 sexy 4 my chairSat Feb 19 1994 19:179
    I served with Roman Catholic Eucharistic Ministers at a local
    hospital for a while.

    I always appreciated how each one, before administering the elements,
    would take the time to 'connect' individually with the patient.

    Peace,
    Richard

Note 864.2

>.0 was originally part of a reply to a note referring to the Lay Eucharistic
>Ministry in the Episcopal Church; the canon quoted is from the canons of
>that Church.

It's true. It was originally a reply in topic 4. I thought the material
worthy of its own topic, and easier to locate later under DIR/TIT= should
the desire arise.

864.5What is an LEM?SOLVIT::HAECKDebby HaeckMon May 02 1994 20:4920
    Hi Nancy

    The full title is Lay Eucharistic Minister I (where 'I' is a Roman
    numeral). As such I am licenced to administer the chalice during the
    Eucharist, and participate in the service. I get fuzzy about what is
    standard for every parish, but in my parish I also read the lessons
    (but not the Gospel), lead the Psalm and lead the Prayers of the People
    during the Eucharistic service. I have also, on Sundays when our vicar
    was away, lead the Morning Prayer service.

    btw: I have also applied for a Lay Eucharistic Minister II licence.
    This will allow me to bring the Eucharist, which has been consecrated
    by the vicar at a Eucharist, to shut-ins. I am nervous about that, but
    was led to apply for it because of a particular gentlewoman in our
    parish.

    Oh, and the license is issued by the Bishop, in my case, of New
    Hampshire.

    Debby
