2058.0. "VAXmate Sequencer Software?" by RICARD::NIS (The goblin is by the water.) Thu Jul 27 1989 23:20

MIDI sequencer software for VAXmate with MPU-IPC?

Anybody got a good experience out there?

Being in southern France it seems necessary to shop mail orders, so I would
appreciate some first hand reviews on how some the alternatives perform
before committing anything on the credit card number.

How about the MPU interface status and data registers. How do you sending
and receiving messages with this interface? I've printed out Usenet MIDI
primer from # 342.0 - thanks to Robert and Richard - good beginner reading.

I somehow expected to find tons of public domain references in this file,
but there are surprisingly few such entries on PC MPU. Next thing to do
would be to get hold of that Technical Reference Manual for the Roland
interface and hack it up from there.

I'd settle for the non graphic screen image for starters like the early
Commodore PROgrams. Velocity bars are nice too, but... if anything like
Cakewalk (is that it?) is workable and in the $200-380 range (FF 1500-
2500) it's a gotta have one.

You can get an MPU-401 clone interface (works the same, costs
less) AND simple sequencer software for US $200. I've seen clone
MPU-401 boards bundled with Cakewalk for just a little bit more.

I uploaded a demo of Cakewalk to DYO780:: a few days ago. I don't think you
need an MPU-401 to run it to check the look and feel. Might be worth a look.
