311.33Streaking magtape...ORACLE::WATERSThu Jun 19 1986 04:2116
I have offered to pick up the tape from Dennis/Mark in Newtonville.
Whether or not that goes through, I can hand deliver the tape to
or from anyone in HLO, LKG, Boston, or any place in between.
However, if the tape delivery is resequenced to avoid the U. S.
Snail, we must _ensure_ that it moves faster than it would have
with the original delivery sequence. Otherwise, this is horribly
unfair to those who queued up ahead of us.

If I get it early in the week, I can give it to John Arnold the
next morning. As a resident of bustling Westborough, he must be
a stone's throw from Len Fehskens, who works with Brian Handspicker.
Then, if we get it to Edd Cote, a quick lateral to Todd Rhodes puts
the tape within reach of the hoards in Framingham. A thought...

I printed out this whole note, and scanned the list to extract
relavent information. Unless someone objects, I would suggest
consulting the people who have some relation to you in the list,
and negotiating a mail bypass. The first skip is from Dennis
Savage to Mark Schmieder, who I suppose will give me the tape
this weekend. I plan to give it to John Arnold Monday, for
delivery to Len. But we haven't been able to reach each other
by phone yet. Could be the tape will outpace both U.S. Mail and

I think Mark's right - the intent of all this was to SPEED UP
circulation of the tape, not jump ahead of people. If you all want
to play by the "original rules" and circulate the tape mostly by
US Mail, fine, we'll do that, but I think it will take longer to
    get to you.

I am therefore dropping my name from the physical distribution list,
this should simplify routing a little. I will still participate

Could someone edit a final version of the list using geographical
and practical criteria and post it here as a reply before we all
get mixed up? I could be the last one on the list, since I'm this
far away, and then forward the tape back to Brad.

I move that we place Timo at the bottom of the list.
That way, we could read it from start to "Finnish." ;-)

Sorry, guys--I just *had* to.

As a "local" (i.e. NH) noter I have to agree that it doesn't seem fair to
make the outlanders wait for me, since I signed up 26'th while KM2 (for
instance) signed up 5th. I can be patient. Besides, I'm still working on

311.60What confusion?ORACLE::WATERSMon Jul 07 1986 13:0744
There seems to be much confusion over where to send the tape next,
or from where to expect it. As far as I know, it's simple: you
contact the person before you in this note to see if the tape is
coming. After you get it, you send it to the next person in this
note, in order of earliest reply number. After getting the tape,
delete your reply (or replies). It's unfortunate that we have to
wipe out this list and make a new one for the next tape, but since
some people have already deleted their replies, I think we have
to stick with the original orders. (And change them for the next
    tape, if you want.)

Now, some people have removed themselves from the list before
getting the tape. Others have spawned copies of the tape, causing
whole groups of people to be removed from the distribution list.
If you have made arrangements to get a copy of the tape from someone
other than the person before you in the grand order, PLEASE DELETE
YOUR ENTRY (ENTRIES) IN THIS NOTE!! Until someone sets up an
alternative distribution listing, this note still serves as everyone's
reference for where to send the tape!

I apologize for causing confusion earlier, when I proposed some
fancy foot work to eliminate senseless mailing. What we learned
    from that experiment is this:
        1. Busy DEC employees aren't _that_ much better than the
            U. S. Mail in moving a tape. The tape still has to go
lots of places, requiring each person to work 3 or so
            tape-related activities into their schedule.

        2. The right way to speed delivery of the tape is to
replicate it in each "locality" (whatever that means),
and share only the copies with people who are easily
accessible. Keep the master on track to the distant
            people.

How should we handle the next tape, you ask? How about letting
it follow pretty much the same path as the first one? I'm going
to retain a copy of the information in this note (names, where to
reach people), which I'll post if that's the thing to do for the
    next tape.

    GW

(P.S. I'm still on the recipient list, and I mean to be.)

311.61What the f*** over?MTBLUE::BOTTOM_DAVIDMon Jul 07 1986 17:0014
AS near as I can tell the order of the list is totally out to lunch.
Based on what I do know about the last location of the tape I cannot
figure out who I get it after or even venture a guess as to
when...sometime before christmas perhaps? In the future we should
stick to the order of the list reguardless of how much faster it
seems to be as gets handed back and forth down south there......this
would eliminate the problem of having people jump in at the end
of the list and get it before some people who were signed up at
    the very first.

So anyone who can figure out the order (now) please post it as a
    reply here.......please

Well, Dave, I was number 3 (yeah, 3) on the list, and I got the
tape after it had been through many hands. I know I got it faster
than if it had been mailed to me at position 3 than handcarried
to me at position 10 or so (which is what actually happened).
Edd Cote made 5 (yeah, 5!) copies of the tape for people. That
means 5 less mailings or rendezvous. I'm making a copy for Derek
Speed. For all this complaining about the tape being lost or delayed,
it does seem to be getting around. Next time we'll "play by the
rules" and it WILL be Christmas by the time you get it.

I thought the order was by the list unless you get it to/thru someone
locally in a very short time relative to putting it in the mail.
I would have been happy to make n copies for people locally had
I been asked. Maybe next time we should select some "reliable"
local distribution points, so distribution of copies of the master
can take place independent of circulation of the master.

It only takes 1.5 hours to copy the tape. There's no excuse for
holding it more than overnight. If you can't copy it IMMEDIATELY
when it's your turn, pass it up.

If you don't like latecomers jumping in, don't let them. But it's
stupid to put the tape in the mail when there's a guy across town
who can copy it and forward it in a few hours. If people are
responsible about copying it IMMEDIATELY. If you can't copy it,
you shouldn't be at the head of the queue.

    Guess what?

I got stuck teaching a DTR class this week for a customer. Lo and
behold, while monitoring the lab (and being very bored), I got a bright
    idea!

Now we have the recipient list on line, as well as a list of who
does/doesn't have the tape. The latter is incomplete seeing as I don't
know who has/hasn't had it for sure.

I currently have 33 people in the database. Is it worthwhile for
me to maintain this thing? Might make managing "who's got the tape"
and "where is the tape" much easier.

Another thing I've thought about doing is developing a location table
that matches location codes to a particular locale (geographically
speaking, of course). If we can hit everyone in a general location at
once, tape circulation might be improved.

    Comments? Suggestions? Flames?

Gee - since .68 went over with such a resounding thud, I guess that
means no one is interested in this?

Well, nuts to you - I STILL think it's a good idea, and I will STILL
try to keep this list updated. I tend to agree with the sentiments
that others have expressed - I see no sense in having umpteen responses
here, or a zillion "COMMUSIC 999 tape 234" notes.

I hereby volunteer (EGAD! Not again!) to be the focal point for
maintaining the distribution list information. If your name is on the
list (which will be posted and periodically updated), you get a copy of
the tape by default. To NOT get a copy of the tape, or to have your
name removed from the list, send me mail or post a note. Then once we
get this thing in gear, we can get rid of all these miscellaneous
    notes, eh Mr. Moderator?

Anyone who is not on the list that would like to be, please post a
    note.

Currently, the database keeps track of who's on the list, and who has
received what tape. In a few days, I hope to have a location table set
up to optimize delivery within the Mass user community.

The rest of this response contains current name/address info for tape
recipients. PLEASE REVIEW YOUR INFORMATION AND POST A NOTE IF IT'S NOT
    CORRECT.

BTW - if this is a bogus idea, tell me up front so I don't waste
    any more time, ok?

Well, Brad, it's NOT a bogus idea, and thanks for spending your
time doing it. It is not clear to me if this invalidates the pecking
order established for Tape 1 and recently for Tape 2.

Admittedly, lots of noters, especially myself, are real quick to
recommend but slower to implement...personally, I'm a planner, not
    a worker...

there's so many notes in the system, addresses aside, that I've
been having to ADD MARKER on some of my hot interests.

Brad, I think it's a wonderful idea. What I would like to see is
the list optimised for distribution within and without the Mass
area, and then I'd like to see us stick to one f****** distribution
scheme rather than reinventing the wheel over and over again (al
la tape 2 circulation list). New additions to be incorporated into
the scheme where it makes the most sense (ie positioned for the
fastest overall distribution). If you are in the position to drive
this effort please do. Since I have not seen or heard the tape I
don't personally feel that I have much control over what happens.

Whatever is done ought to accomodate the notion of some of us acting
as distribution points for multiple copies.

I think keeping a distribution list is a fine idea. The localized
"fanout" points are even better (especially since I've signed up to get
a copy of tape 2 from Len). A separate tape for the European subset of
the list is probably an excellent idea. (I've already worked out a
deal to send Paul Kent a copy of Tape 1 rather than the master, so
David Bottom should get the tape about 2 weeks quicker!)

Brad: please change my node name from BIZET:: to BARTOK::. BIZET
is currently a node name in transition. BARTOK is much more reliable.
    Thanks.

I guess I'me happy to act as the European "fanout point" is this
a technical term?. Provided the guys around Europe

A, let me know that they want to be on our personal european
    distribution list.

B, Find some way of reimbursing the cost. ( one or two wouldn't
be so bad,but this thing could run into 10's of pounds ).

So any European takers let me know. If you do want me to mail you
direct I suggest you also mail the guy who's in the current list
before you, so that he know's to miss you out.

    					Paul.

I don't have much time for NOTES these days. Hope I remembered the format
correctly.
311.77Can I get a copy?GALLO::MCARLETONReality; what a concept!Mon Jul 14 1986 21:0419
Add me to the database. I would rather get a Nth generation copy
than have to handle the master. I don't have any equipment I would
trust to play the master and I don't have any way to make a copy
if I did. Does this put me in line for tape two also or do I have
to go find the other note to do that?

So that everyone gets the message Please do not send me the master
tapes until furthur notice, my deck is on the blink and I can't
imagine what kind of flack I'd catch if it ate the tapes. I left
my adress info in this note for future reference. I have deleted
myself from the tape 2 distribution (although I'd still like to
hear it). Since the nearest repair facility is probably Portland
(1 hour drive) it may be a while unitl I get repaired.
