    Macs and musical gear tied together with MIDI.  The presenter is
    a local musician who told me he'd be bringing in about $30K of gear
    for the demo.

	Here's the directions to the WMUG:

		Location: Kingsley Hall, Worcester Academy

		Get off 290 at exit 14 and go East on Harrison street for one 
		block where it intersects with Providence Street and take a
		right.  Take the first street on the left, Aetna Street, and 
		proceed for two blocks to Penn Ave.  Turn right through the
		chain-link gate and park as near the end of the drive as
		you can.  Kingsley Hall is on the left.

		(The area is pretty grungy, but the folks at the WMUG are nice!)

		*****  ANNOUNCING FallJam '88  *****


    FallJam '88 will be held in the Texas Lounge, Worcester, on
    Saturday, November 12. The program will run from 1:00 to 6:00 pm,
    and feature a variety of live music in a wide range of styles.
    It will provide a mixture of groups and individual performers.

    FallJam '88 is open to all DEC employees, their families and
    friends. There is no admissions charge.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

     Texas is located across the street from the Centrum in the
     Worcester Center shopping mall.  The place is very plush.

   Facilities:

	o Full stage
	o Full Lighting
	o Dance floor
	o Cash bar and deli
	o Room for up to 600 people

   Rules:

	o People will not be allowed to bring their own food or
	  drinks into the club.

	o No one under 21 will be allowed in WITHOUT A PARENT
	  OR GUARDIAN (a guardian is defined as someone old enough
	  to be a parent). Families are welcome with kids of any
	  age, however, parents will be responsible for their
	  own kids (especially those between 15 and 21).

   Parking:

	Parking will be $1.00 at the Worcester Center Garage with
	the Texas validation. After 5 pm parking is free!



                   ***  Directions to TEXAS  ***

   From Route 290 heading West:

     Take exit 16 (Central St). At the end of the ramp turn right onto
     CENTRAL ST.  Follow it to the first set of lights. Turn left onto
     SUMMER ST. (The Post Office will be on the left.) 

     Follow Summer St. until you reach a rotary. Turn right into the
     rotary. Take the first right out of the rotary and go under a
     bridge. The road will fork at this point; stay to the left and
     head straight into the Parking Garage. When you enter the Garage,
     follow the red signs to the lower level (bear around to the
     right), where Texas is located. The club is on the ground level
     plaza coming in from the garage, just before you enter the Mall. 

   From Route 290 heading East:

     Take exit 16 (Central St). At the end of the ramp stay left. Turn
     left at the first light. You are now on SUMMER ST. At this point,
     follow the directions given above. 

   Notes: If you follow the signs to the Centrum, you will get there.
   Texas used to called the Uptown, and some of the signs may still 
   refer to the Uptown.

    All synths are rediculously marked down (no I dont own stock but

		    AN OPEN JAM SESSION


	When:  Friday, February 3, 1989, from ~7:30 to 1:00.

	Where: Northboro Fish & Game  (See directions below)

	Admission is free !!!!  There will be a cash bar open.


    Unlike Falljam/Springjam  (which feature established groups),  this
    event is similar to last summer's "Sweatjam" where people just show
    up with their gear, and play in pick-up groups. So far we have about 
    20 musicians who are participating, but any additional musicians that 
    would like to join in are more than welcome. We are providing the PA 
    system, a bass rig, drum set, and other essentials.  See note 538 of 
    MUSIC_V3 for further details. Musicians will be asked to contribute a 
    dollar or two, to cover the rental of the Hall and a PA snake, but 
    admission is free to all non-musicians, and all DEC employees, their 
    families, and friends are invited. 

    This jam is not limited to any particular style of music. Whether you 
    prefer Rock, Country, Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Bluegrass, Folk, or even
    Classical, we will try to oblige everyone. 

    So pull that old instrument out of the closet, dust off the strings/
    keys/reeds/valves/mallets/skins/etc and get ready to make some noise. 

    We have the hall from 5:30 PM until 1:00 AM. Most of the musicians are
    arriving early, so we can get the stage set up, and start playing as
    early as possible.


	 Directions from I-495:

		Take I-290 West to Solomon Pond Road exit.
                At end of ramp go towards Northboro.
                Take first right onto Bearfoot Road.
                1/2 mile on left is Coburn Street.
 		Turn right immediately into Fish & Game parking lot.

                       Feb. 18  at  Interface


    Steve Winfield (not Steve Winwood!!) has a couple of
    albums/cassettes (on the Spirit label) in the "new age" vein. He
    plays sax and flute and more recently has begun using the Yamaha
    wind controller (w/ Roland D-50 and Tx81Z)

    Dervish is myself (on guitar and synth) and two other keyboard
    players. We play electronic instrumental music, covering different
    styles from space/new_age to rock and jazz. (Instruments include
    ESQ-1, Mirage, TX81Z, CZ-101, Yamaha drum machine. All MIDIed to 
    Dr. T's on my C-64).

    The concert will be a collaboration, including pieces by Steve and
    ourselves. The group will also feature a very good percussionist
    (acoustic), Ray Frisbe. Starts at 8:00 at the Interface auditorium
    (outside of Watertown square on Main street, I'll post the exact
    address later.) Tickets are $10 (yeah... I know that's expensive
    for a local show, but apparently the going rate for Interface
    concerts. Unfortunately out of my control.) We did this a few
    months ago and had a great time and very appreciative audience,
    played for about one and a half hours. This will be pretty much
    the same, with a few new pieces.

our local Ensoniq rep. Everyone is invited, but there will be limited
first come seating. The new VFX and the EPS will be featured. It's happening

Here are some directions for getting to the store...

Take RT. 290 West to Worcester. Take Exit 13 Kelley Square. At the end
of the off ramp, turn right. Follow the signs marked RTE. 122 NORTH.
Kelley Square is very tricky. You go thru the square then BEAR LEFT
between two gas stations. One of them is a Merit station.
You will come to a light and then go under an overpass. Keep going on Rt. 122
to the next light (Southbridge St.) and turn left. Union Music will be
on your left next to the Coney Island. Parking is on the street.

    I have confirmation of having been awarded a finalist award (not
    a fellowship) in the Interarts category from the Artists Foundation
    in Boston.  I had submitted a group of stories called "The Klein
    Bottle," a reminiscence of a probable performing group in Seattle,
    on audio cassette.  My friend Marilyn, who founded Mobius where
    I almost exclusively perform, was also named a finalist winner.

       The Ensoniq clinic at Union Music went very well. The stars of the show 
    were the EPS and VFX as expected. There were about 30 folks there, about 
    10 from DEC! The clinic was split into two parts. The first half was a 
    great demo of the EPS MIDI'd to another EPS (EPS-m actually), then MIDI'd 
    to a VFX. The EPS blew people away that had never been exposed to it. They 
    had the EPS with the 4X mem (2meg) with SCSI port into a 80MEG hard drive. 
    Now THAT is a powerful instrument!! The EPS is truly designed for 
    *PERFORMANCE*. The VFX part was nice, as it can sound incredably HUGE. A 
    base EPS is around $1700. They were selling EPS's 'tonight only' for
    200 bucks off!! Two were sold on the spot. My only gripe about the whole
    clinic was the lack of new public domain samples. Bob Stillman has about 
    170 or so disks full of *GOOD* *USABLE* stuff with him. As he goes through 
    his demo he mentions that 'many of the samples you hear tonight you can 
    copy'. I was phsyched!!! The only problem was that Jeff was so caught up 
    in making the clinic/demo run smoothly that he didn't get a chance to make 
    copies of Bob's stuff. Jeff did get two disks copied though. One was a very 
    nice French Horn and the other was a complete HR-16 (worth the trip for 
    me). Bob Stillman will be back in a coupla weeks. Jeff said that he'd 
    concentrate on getting copies of Bob's public domain stuff for all of us. 
          Overall it was very informative and entertaining. I got lots of good 
    ideas to try on my EPS. I realized how much power the instrument has, and 
    how little of it I truly use......

	Sorry for the late notice but I'm in the middle of house-buying frenzy,
	and I got two overdue projects, plus I'm working on this upcoming show:


	The Vermont Reggae Festival will be held on 29 July 1989, at North
	Beach, Burlington VT. There will be 8 bands performing from 9:45 AM
	until 8:30 PM. Admission is free. The bands range from local to 
	international (Jamaican).

	Last year this event attracted about 18000 people. 

	North Beach allows camping, I suspect it will be crowded but it will
	be possible to camp through the weekend.

	Directions:

	From points south, take I-93 to Concord NH, get on I-89. Get off
	I-89 at Exit 16. Left at the bottom of ramp. That is US 7. Go
	straight down through Winooski. When you cross the river bridge,
	bear right on Riverside Av. Go straight through Riverside until
	it ends, and turn left. Follow signs to the Northern Connector.
	Right onto Northern Connector, next exit is North Beach. If you
	get there late you'll have to park up the street. Expect some kind
	of crowd/traffic controls.

	I will be performing with the opening band, The Effect. It will be 
	my last performance with a reggae band. I'm also on the crew for the
	day. If this year is like any of the previous years, it should be
	quite an event.

There is a LOT to demonstrate at this meeting.  Please be early - aim
for 7:00 if possible, to get any disk copying and magazine reading
out-of-the-way before the feature presentation.  I will have (my own)
recent issues of ST-Informer and Current Notes available starting at
6:45.  Club copies of other publications usually show up with Ray
Wallace.  I will attempt to minimize as much as possible the "club
business" portion.  The adjenda will go something like:

7:15-7:25 club announcements
7:30-8:10 Chad Leigh and Dan Gosselin demonstrate C-Lab's Notator
8:15-8:40 Rick Saul breifly shows us some Hybrid Arts software
8:45-9:45 Dr. T's staff (oh no!  I forgot their names!) will demonstrate
		their Tiger CUB and Copyist Apprentice software.

I expect the meeting to be longer than usual.  I know I won't get home
until after 11:00.  I may swap Rick with Dr. T's if there is a time
constraint.

Acton Christian Church is at 45 Minot Ave, which is near the
intersection of Rt 2 and Rt 27.  Turn NORTH at the first traffic light
on Rt 2 that is EAST of Rt 27. (This intersection is near the entrance
of Digital's Piper Road plant.)  This road takes you past the Conant
school.  Beyond the school, you reach a bend in the road.  Turn RIGHT,
the church is right there on your LEFT.

Note that we are in the "other" room, that is, the large meeting room
with blue carpeting that looks like where the Church usually holds it's
worship services.  This will allow us to use the sound system installed
in this room for the Midi demos.

(Of course, like much of life, things are not what they appear.  In
actuality, the Acton church meets for worship in the same small room
with the Red carpet that we usually use for our meetings.  Attendance
has been low lately, and the congregation "feels better" is the smaller
room.   Twenety people in the small room feels like a lot.  In the large
room, it feels like the place is empty.)

My Roland D5 came with two half-inch thick volumes of information, much
of the second volume devoted specifically to the meanings of the
programming parameters, including lots of examples for generating tones
typical of several major instrument types, and the use and format of
the SYSEX messages, down to the bit level.

Am I safe to assume that this is substantially less information than you
get from other manufacturers, or is the D5 a departure from Roland's
previous practice?

    Now "why" am I so worked up about this?  I'll tell you.
    
    Years ago, I had been converted from being a full-fledged (I admit it)
    "classical snob" to appreciate that one can be ambitious in the field
    of Rock and Roll.  In fact, IMHO, most of the rock musicians I know
    personally are far more ambitious than most of the classical pianists
    I had met during my classical years.
    
    The rock guy that did it for me was Keith Emerson.  I was once held
    physically and forced to listen to his stuff, and whaddyaknow... I
    ended up loving it.
    
    So, I thought, I must have a Hammond organ.
    
    Well folks, back in those days (let's just say it was "a few" years
    ago), you couldn't touch a hammond for less than around $2K - and that
    wouldn't get you a B-2 or C-3.
    
    It was every teenage rock-n-roller keyboardist's dream  to have a Hammond.
    But because it was so expensive, it typically wasn't even a "dream" -
    more appropriate to call it a "fantasy".
    
    Here we are,  "years later", and some guy is selling something for $50
    that I would have sold my soul for in High School.
    
    I mean, to me, an old tone-wheel Hammond... well... it just something
    that I associate with a dream or fantasy.
    
    The ultimate irony, is that even at $50, I still can't afford it!!! ;-)
    
    Sorry if I've bored you...   I just had to say something....

I've seen several requests for patch and sequence files.
 
One option I haven't seen suggested is to make use of the IEMUG BBS.
This is set up for the International Electronic Musicians Users Group
and you can call it at 405-733-3102.
They require membership after 30 days of your first login, but you
have download access from the first call until then. And it's only
something like $50 a year. There are just billions and billions of
files there. Cakewalk sequences, Voyetra, Sonus......on and on.
 
Try there and see what you think.

    As a result of a recent directive, it appears that COMMUSIC (and a
    host of other employee interest conferences) are being put in a
    type of "limbo"...
    
    In a nutshell, certain groups hosting these conferences have been 
    instructed NOT to back-up the files. I believe COMMUSIC is effected
    by this.
    
    Soooooo... should a disc crash, become corrupted, or restructured
    COMMUSIC will be history.
    
    Any idea what we can do?

      Some background on notes usage:
        
      Each and every notes conference runs on a computer owned by a cost 
      centermanager.  It is the responsibility of the cost center manager to 
      ensure that Digital's assets within his or her cost centers are being 
      efficiently and effectively used. 
        
      . Basically, there are two kinds of computer conferencing (notes files): 
      technical/business and non-technical/business.
        
      Technical/business notes files are used extensively in support of the 
      companies business -- product development, strategic collaboration, 
      business conferencing, reduce time to market, and shorten problem 
      resolution time, business planning, etc. These are clearly valid reasons 
      to encourage conferencing/notes file use as a productivity tool.
        
      Non-technical/business notes files are those covering personal 
      interests.  These files have grown to unreasonable levels and in many 
      incidences does not contribute to our productivity objectives.  This 
      type of use is consuming valuable network capacity and consuming 
      disk/storage space.  Both of these are increasing costs to the company.  
      
      . All cost center managers and system managers must monitor 
      non-technical / business notesfiles.  Effective immediately, I am 
      instructing all IM&T managers and system managers not to back up 
      non-technical business related notesfiles.  Additionally, they are to 
      cut back on capital required for notes access and monitor the 
      optimization of their computer capital.
        
      Our Corporate Security and Personnel policies are very clear and my 
      expectations are that our Cost Center Managers will comply with their 
      managerial responsibility.

    about fallow, couldn't they simply copy over the conference, doing an
    ad hoc backup onto disk instead of having ops do it to tape? Does
    anyone understand the data structure of notes, e.g. have some code to
    read it? In that case, it would probably be possible to write something
    to extract (and in emergencies, apply) incremental changes. Heck,
    doesn't somebody have a TK50?

    I would have hosted the thing before (being a co-mod), except that
    DYPSS1 is on a somewhat remote part of the net and access time isn't

    Incidentally, last time I looked, the conference was close to 100k
    blocks.  Not small.  And not conducive to netbackups via a "shadow"

This sounds like something that's going to backfire heavily; I remember
reading in HUMAN::DIGITAL that the only reason quite a few people stay is
access to non-work Notes, creating a pleasing work environment. Judging by
some of the names expressing that thought, the corporation could lose a lot
of talent...

After all, when the only difference between Digital and a competitor is that 
you get more money with the competitor...

       The really spooky thing about this is that Xerox is eliminating
       recreational use of their network effective January 1.  This has
       provoked a good deal of anguish over there, but some new brass
       hat they took from IBM is citing IBM policy as justification.

       There's got to be a better way to cut costs without contributing
       to a decrease in the quality of our corporate lives!  And we
       better figure out what it takes before they decide to cut out
       anything more than backups.

    Karl, your error was probably due to:
    
      a) node was booting and had not completely started (race condition)
      b) someone has restricted net access to HUMAN and you got
    	 a bogus error message
    
    As for archiving, I've been advocating that for a few years now.  Too
    much information to wade thru.
    
    I suspect that someone, somewhere - who is in a position of authority,
    I might add - will make the *right* decision regarding employee
    interest conferences.  While it appears that some folks regularly abuse
    the privilege (read: note all day and do little (if any) productive
    work), the majority of people "note" with discretion and prudence.
    
    I'd be amazed if some silly bean-counter would fail to weigh the
    implications of amputating this arm of the Digital *culture*.  I've
    made more business contacts from employee interest conferences than
    from technical conferences.

Deleting the notes, without doing a compress on the conference, will not
make the conference any smaller... so remember to do the compress.
Has the conference been compressed lately? or ever?

(I am  saying  this from memory...  I used to moderate some conferences a
few years ago  and  that's  what I had to do then.  The way it worked was
that the Notes application  doesn't give the disk space back until you do
the compress, even though notes  were  deleted.   Things may have changed
since then. Notes experts?)

It was the *good, motivated* people who were saying that. (At least, the
impression I got from other, work-related, conferences was that they were/are
valuable contributors to the corporation.) Geoff Shingles has gone on public
record in the UK that he wants to get rid of the "underperformers". Such people
are hardly likely to vote with their feet since their chances elsewhere aint
so hot, whereas the overperformers know they can find something else quickly.

As for tidying up... There must be a lot of old notes with little relevance
now in here. However, doing the job may take up a lot of time and effort...
Shows willing, anyway, and that's good.  :-)

    For anyone interested, I spent some time assigning keywords and
    generally cleaning up the conference during the few months before the
    move from NOVA to DNEAST.  I CONVERTed the conference - it went from
    84K to 73K blocks (big deal). I think I reconverted it to use a larger
    extent size to improve performance (and I think it ended up being
    around 88K blocks when it moved to DNEAST).
    
    The "backup" rule is a stupid decision obviously made by an individual
    with little or no technical ability.  Diskspace is not the problem
    here.  If folks have an interest in an EE conference, there will always
    be a place found for it, legally or not (it's very easy to hide a
    conference).
    
    Cleaning up old notes is an exercise in futility.  Trust me - I spent a
    *LOT* of my time assigning keywords and reorganizing topics in this
    conference.  There are too many interwoven "banter" threads to warrant
    any meaningful cleanup - the time required to do such a thing would be
    self-defeating in terms of "corporate resource utilization".  
    
    If the beaners have a problem with the conference, I'll host it down
    here.  We'll archive this one (viz, read-only time) and open a new one,
    and I'll use my *own* TK50s to back it up, and my *own* time.

    Is there some alternative to archiving the whole conference? How about
    transferring certain topics, or replies newer than a given date, to the
    new conference?
    
    I personally like to buy on the "following edge" -- and one of these
    days used EPS's are going to be cheap enough for even me :). It would
    be a pain to have to start a new topic in the new conference to ask my
    stupid questions, then get referred back to the old notes (RTFN), then
    come back for clarification, then go back for more perusal, etc.
    
    It might be hard to decide what stays and goes. Some topics are
    timeless. There will ALWAYS be someone asking about CZ101s?!

The good ones know how to divide their time so that their recreational noting
doesn't interfere with their work. And, as we all know (or should) workingly
solidly for eight hours is counter-productive; you actually need a short
break of about five minutes once an hour or so to keep the batteries going. 
What better way to clear the mind than to whizz through a conference and see 
what's new?

Of course, with a windows system it's even easier....

Brainless wonder.

Didn't anybody ever consider that is MORE WORK to figure out how to
EXCLUDE a file from a backup (for example - you can't exclude
individual files from a BACKUP/IMAGE command!) than it is just to
ignore extra bytes? You can set the file "/NOBACKUP", but 100K blocks
is a drop in the bucket on 8mm backup tapes and other modern backup
technology.  It isn't even all that much compared to the size of the
average VMS system disk.  Hey - I've seen larger page and swap files.

    has decided that non-business related Conferences must go and this is
    how we can justify it.

they are to cut back on capital required for Notes access, and monitor the
optimization of their computer capital.

Our Corporate Security and Personnel policies are very clear, and my
expectations are that our cost center managers will comply with their
managerial responsibility.

	This conference is technical - err, isn't it ?   I am using 
this conference and the Amiga conference (also technical, perhaps more 
easily recognizably so to management ?) to help me learn to program in C.  

	Oh, I  *_KNOW_*  there are internal courses at dec - and my cc 
manager knows they're over $1K per week, and we all know how 
interesting the examples from courses can be, right ?   So, I'm using
a hobby interest as a vehicle for learning C (and lotsa cross tools)
I'll learn and produce a lot more.   ....and who knows, we just might
get in the business of<Nahh, forget it>

    Well I thought I'd update everyone. The winds of change are still
    blowing up here in Maine. I want to make sure that everyone knows where
    things stand as of today. I stress no decisions have been made yet, and
    I'm in a position to influence the decison somewhat (more on that
    later).
    
    We have a capacity problem on the DNEAST cluster. Commusic is the
    hottest non-business related notesfile on the cluster, with links
    nearly 18 hours a day, and during peaks we're serving 4-10 links just
    to Commusic alone. The business types have restricted our ability to
    buy hardware for the next six months at least. So...things being
    discussed are restricting access to "off" business hours (1800-0500).
    Just plain getting rid of the non-business related conferences is the
    other alternative under discussion. No decisions have been made yet,
    I've been tasked with looking into what processing can be done away
    with or moved to off hours and the staff is particularly interested in
    the notesfile portion of this. So it might be best to get ahead of the
    staff and being to look for a new home (if necessary).
    
    ULTRA::BURGESS, do you have capacity for it? OR anyone else? Those of
    you who use this conference for your work at DEC, do you have a home?

About two weeks ago I wrote Ed C:

Hey, guess what.  Dan Infante has instructed system managers not to back
up hobby conferences any more.  Hard to argue with him.  But the next step
is elimination.  Like hobby "conferences.. have
grown to an unreasonable level" and don't contribute anything.  Sounds
like somebody sent something to that cost cutting conference.   I wonder
how much eliminating these conference altogether would save.  I think it
isn't clear.  If you condemned notes to reside on crappy old drives, that
helps, but net bandwidth is still consumed.  But how much?  Could be
substantial.  Nobody knows.  We dont' have measurements of the effect on
net bandwidth of notes, although the previous reply gives an indication.

Recreational notes helped debug the notes
product for years, but that's not needed any more.  Someone from Cambridge
Research Lab asked opinions of Commusicers about a CRL multi-media
project.  People have discussed that DECworld demo of MIDI files moving
over servers to different computers.  Commusic has helped the company.

I think that unilaterally volunteering to run during non-peak hours
(per some measurement and a cut off per a good criterion) would show
good faith on the part of conference users and help preserve the
largely recreational conferences.

    Dave,  thanks for the heads-up.  It's appalling where the F&A people
    think we should cut costs, (like I can't get loaner gear for my
    resellers without dispensation from the Deity, while salespeople in
    this office FLY to Phoenix, 120 miles away), mostly in areas that
    make DEC worth working in.  And yes, we should play up the
    contributions that COMMUSIC made to Mike Good's Presence project,
    and of course the MIDI demo at DECworld.
    
    In the past, due to high net traffic, HUMAN::DIGITAL would be taken
    offline during peak business hours, and put back on after hours.  Of
    course, HUMAN was only a MicroVAX II.  I would support, if you get
    pressed, taking commusic offline 8-5 EST.  Of course, it's no problem
    here, because we're at work 2 or 3 hours after y'all head home.
    
    COMMUSIC is an important resource to me !  I'd volunteer my box, but
    KEYS:: is a VS2000 with limited disk space.  That brings up the
    question; which is the issue placing commusic more in danger - the
    amount of disk space it consumes, or the number of links in from noters
    during the day ?
    
    I'd support a purge.  Not much prior to 1988 is relevant to me.. most
    of those synths are antiques.

    I'd be willing to host a *new* version of COMMUSIC here on MIDI
    (a VAXstation 3100 M38 SPX with 20 meg of memory).

    COMMUSIC here as well (not worth it if you ask me).  I'd even be 
    willing (in the new conf) to create official notes for every synth 
    I can think of, so it would start out being very organized.

    we can get, I will volunteer to host (for the time being) the
    conference as-is, although I don't know how long I could do that.
    
    Dan's offer is very gracious, but there's simply too much valuable
    information in this conference to relegate to a backup tape in
    someone's office.
    
    So, I could host COMMUSIC, however, backups would be DONE, but very 
    occasionally (every couple of weeks perhaps).
    
    I would much prefer that we find another host however.  I really can't
    afford much time for COMMUSIC other than reading it.  I think I've
    done "my share" of hosting conferences.

    I would've told you I was a guitarist) because that's what I seem
    to be doing mostly, but as much as I love chatting about the hardware,
    I still view my primary interest as being "software", that is,
    the MUSIC itself.

    I'd like to see more discussion of keyboard playing.  It just doesn't
    seem to be happening in this conference, for whatever reason, and

    If you want to talk about keyboard playing, then talk about it.
    If you want to talk about chord voicing (which HAS been talked about
    here) then talk about it.
    
    Note that others than keyboard players worry about chord voicing.
    
    If there is another conference where general musical technique (such
    as chord voicing) it would be MUSIC, but that conference has much
    greater emphasis on fans and listening to music.
    
    COMMUSIC, equally misnamed, is about the technique and technology
    of creating, producing, performing, and recording music.  I'd say
    talk about it here.  Ask your questions, and I am sure you will get
    answers.

    It's my opinion that COMMUSIC already *is* the "Keyboard" conference.
    The fact that discussions of technique aren't carried on seem to be
    more a function of the participant's wants/needs than any "charter"
    conflict.
    
    Honestly, although I'd read a "technique" conference, the idea of
    adding yet another to my notebook is unappealing. When the special
    interest groups defected from MUSIC, I lost track of all of them.
    Then MUSIC itself turned into "pop music" and I squashed that too.
    
    Specialization isn't always advantageous. Carried to it's absurd
    end, should we have a PIANO_TECHNIQUE conference, a RHODES_technique,
    a DX..., a JX.... Nah...
    
    To sum it up, I'd support it, but doing so would be a hassle...

I'll add my support for retaining such discussions in COMMUSIC. (I'm primarily
keyboard-oeiented, BTW.)

Reason? I agree that COMMUSIC is basically misnamed. To me it is for discussions
of making music, start to finish. It doesn't exclude acoustic music discussions,
although it isn't of strong interest to anyone who *does* exclude *nonacoustic*
music by preference. I've whittled down my conference involvement substantially,
and COMMUSIC represents to me the best overall coverage of my fairly diverse
musical interests. I think part of the "interest factor" in COMMUSIC is the mix
of the noters' specialties- synergy is one of my favorite phenomena.

Annuder vote for keeping it here.  I sometimes read the Guitar
conference which has a name that correlates with a proposed "Keyboard"
conference; I find that most of the discussion there is about technical
stuff (amps amps amps...). There are good technique discussions too,
but let's face it folks, DEC is a techie company and the people
here get into the technical side of things regardless of conference
name.  The music makers who are less interested in the technical
side have different "day jobs"  ;-). I think a keyboard only conference
would starve or dilute the quality of COMMUSIC.

I agree with the idea of identifying a note to encourage keyboard
technique discussion and announcing it in the appropriate conferences.

    I won't grant that this is the "keyboard" conference, but I'll grant
    that it IS the "MIDI" conference and observe that Keyboard magazine
    does extensively cover MIDI that isn't directly related to "keyboards"
    whereas Guitar Player doesn't delve into the MIDI area nearly as
    deeply.
    
    I guess I just don't think a place called "COMMUSIC" is the right place
    to talk about PLAYING keyboards.  But then, it's not even really the
    right place to talk about MIDI either.
    
    Let's just say that I'm slowly throwing away my sentimental attachments
    to the name "COMMUSIC" in favor of more practical considerations.

    You missed my point.
    
    I was pointing out that using Bob's description of what is appropriate
    for COMMUSIC we could merge the note for guitar players with COMMUSIC.
    I suspect that few COMMUSIC readers would appreciate the content
    of the GUITAR conference.
    
    Anyway, I withdraw the suggestion.  However, I probably will (continue)
    to not be inclined to discuss keyboard playing here.  I guess that my
    real motive was to have a notesfile that is relatively free of
    "Music equipment".
    
    I don't deny being an equipment junkie myself, it's just that every so
    often, I *REALLY* feel like I need a break from it.

I've been reading this conference for a couple of months now, as people asking 
for keyboards notes were referred here from UK_Musicians. And this is the 
first time I've written. This conference IS intimidating!!

Now, I'm not complaining (honest!). But for a newcomer, who's just bought his 
first Yamaha and is still at novice level, it seems that this is a very 
high-tech conference. It's dominated by a few people who are obviously very 
good at what they do - and a lot of this is more to do with electronics than 
with learning how to play music. (As an example, what about that guy who asked 
for advice on how to buy a piano? 90% of you jumped on him to say 'Get a 
keyboard'!!).

I'm sure you're all eagerly going to say that you'd love to have a wider range 
of topics, and I'm also sure you'd encourage we novices to learn from you. But 
I wonder how many people would feel more at home in a less techy conference?

Personally, if one was started, I'd use it, and proably file this one away 
until I felt I could understand it a bit better.

Disregarding my *own* proclivities, I've seen enough of the arguments of folks
who want your proposed topics in a new conference that I have to agree. My
interests are not everyone's, and I can see the logic in arguments for
splitting this topic off. My preferences are unabashedly based on my own
convenience, which is not a valid consideration. I guess I'd suggest you go for
it, big guy!

    I sure wish there was more general theory talk here - I couldn't tell

    Well, there is no real music theory type conference *anywhere*.  GUITAR
    has the most, but it's oriented towards guitar palying and rock/metal
    in particular.  FOLK_MUSIC has almost zero topics on playing, JAZZ and
    MUSIC too.  It's more listeners there.  
    
    I always found it interesting that "Guitar Player" had more music
    theory type articles than "Keyboard", which is, like COMMUSIC, more
    tech-oriented.  I guess that's beacuse many (most?) keyboardists have
    studied music compared to guitarists who seem to be mostly self-taught.
    
    I say put 'em in here or put 'em in another conference but put 'em in. 
    I'd like to see some stuff like that, perhaps more practical stuff then
    thumbing through Piston's book...

	Here are the conferences I'd like to see in an ideal noting
	world:

	MUSIC_APPRECIATION - discussion of music from a fan's
		perspective - artists and recordings. One central
		one for general musical discussion, plus specialized
		oned for certain popular genres (JAZZ, CLASSICAL...).
		Combination of current MUSIC, RECORDS, CD conferences.

	AUDIO/VIDEO - the equipment a fan (non-musician) needs to 
		enjoy music. With hi-fi VCR's, audio/video receivers,
		popular music videos, etc., I don't think the distinction
		between audio and video is meaningful anymore.

	MUSIC_THEORY - This is the one I would be most interested in,
		and the area that's neglected by the current conferences.
		This would cover music theory (harmonic, rhythmic,
		melodic, etc.) and composition. How do *you* go about
		writing a rock song? How can I modulate from C to Gb
		in one measure of 5/4? How do I arrange for a brass
		section? What's the "Steely Dan chord" and why does
		it sound so good?

	MUSIC_EQUIPMENT - Discussion of equipment used to make, amplify,
		or record music. Associated conferences for certain
		specific types of equipment (GUITAR, KEYBOARDS). The
		main conference would cover home studios, recording
		equipment, sequencers, signal processing equipment,
		and musical instruments that don't have their own
		conferences.

	MUSIC_PERFORMANCE - Discussion of aspects of performance, from
		forming a band and getting gigs (or recording	
		contracts), to specific techniques of specific
		instruments. The latter would also be a valid topic
		in the instrument conferences (GUITAR, KEYBOARDS, etc.).

	Well, I can dream, can't I? In practice, the existing conferences
	have too much history behind them for this to get done. Too many
	useful notes already out there to start from scratch (even if
	they are all lost in the noise). I will say, though, if I 
	was to choose one useful thing to do, it would be to create 
	a MUSIC_THEORY conference. It's the one thing that's not well 
	covered elsewhere (and it's the one I'm most interested in:-).

    I don't feel like I have enough time to follow this notesfile in great
    detail, and even less time to respond to anything. But this topic
    caught my interest.
    
    When I first heard about the COMMUSIC notesfile, I thought it was about
    Computer Music. I find it interesting that the list in 8.148 doesn't
    even mention that! I would like to see more emphasis on the use of
    computers to do music.
    
    From this viewpoint, synthesizers are merely peripheral devices. Sure,
    computer buffs follow the latest technology on peripherals (laser
    printers, scanners, etc), but that's only one aspect of the whole
    experience. News of processors, software, and methods is of interest
    too. But these things are parts of the whole experience of being a
    computer buff. Learning what you can do, how you do it, and sharing
    these techniques with other people that share your interest, are the
    main part of being an enthusiast. That isn't something you purchase or
    read reviews about - it's more of the art of using your computer.
    
    I would have thought that being a "computer music" hobbyist would be
    really similar to being a "computer" hobbyist - just add on the music
    aspects. Yet what seems to be happening instead is that there is a lot
    of dwelling on the peripherals, and only a little on the software,
    processors and hardly anything on methods.
    
    The recent discussion about AlgoRhythms was great! This is what I had
    expected most of COMMUSIC to be about. Yet I have seen little
    discussion of topics like that. Oh well...

	OK, how about a com
bination of mine and db's ideas -
	a "theory & practice" conference which would cover all
	the stuff I had in mind, plus performance issues for
	instruments other than guitar and drums (which are
	thoroughly covered in their own conferences). Actually,
	when you think about it, performance issues are of course
	very closely tied to composition - you need to know something
	about an instrument to write for it, and from the
	other side, improvisational performance is really
	just composing on the fly. Just so long as the
	equipment discussions are kept out - if such a conference
	existed, I'd drop GUITAR and COMMUSIC from my regular
	notebook and only refer to them when I need to learn
	something about equipment.

	So, who creates it? Timewise, I'm busy like everyone else,
	but if I drop GUITAR and COMMUSIC it probably would have
	little impact overall (I'd hope). My management's pretty
	open-minded, so in theory there'd be little problem with
	creating it on KOALA - except that we've got a severe
	shortage of disk space at the moment. That should be
	resolved in a month or two. If someone creates such
	a conference in the immediate future, great, if not
	I'll ask my management if I can do it once we get our
	disks...

medium just doesn't match the content very well.  It's
much easier to discuss musical theory if you can use
musical notation!  But there's no easy way to do that
and share it in Notes.  So the conferences do tend to
focus on what we can easily write about.

	We had this *exact* discussion in GUITAR a while back. Most 
people are interested in the techie stuff. Whenver a theory (or 
generally playing) note is posted, the thread dies a quick death. 
Oh, sure you can get an answer to a question but forget long term
discussions about anything except hardware (witness the Kitty 
Hawk Amplifiers note in GUITAR). 

	I think a theory/playing conference would be good (for me),
but only if it could be applied to guitar/bass as well as keyboard. 

re: COMMUSIC

	I stayed out of this conference for a long time because I
thought it *was* about computers and music. Now I'm a member 
because it's *not* only about computers/midi & music, but also
about home recording in general.

Well it's time I jumped into the fray...

I think a making music or theory notesfile is a waste of assetts. Discuss it
here, I'm certain that there are knowledgable folk here who would participate.
At a time when the corporation is looking at ALL non-business related 
notesfiles in a less than benevolent manner, it's seems both follish and
risky to continue to propogate yet another notesfile that is related to 
several that already exist out there.

re: the guitar "theory" discussion. One of the reasons theory discussions
die so fast is that at least some of the folk who know don't participate and
those who don't have the knowledge often don't even know what to ask...I 
would hesitate to say that most guitar players are musically illiterate but
certainly MANY are.

	What does Dan Infante have to do with anything? He issued a
	confused memo about not backing up employee interest files
	in his group (IM&T), later basically rescinded when the
	real impact of the memo was pointed out. Maybe someone
	in IM&T attempting to start a new music file might be
	concerned about that old memo, but the only impact outside
	of IM&T was the panic of people who mistook it for some
	sort of corporate policy.

	Dan Infante is the head of IM&T (formerly DIS). He issued
	a memo a few months ago instructing system managers in
	IM&T to not backup non-work notes conferences. He also
	made some comments implying that he wouldn't mind if they
	went away completely. The memo got forwarded all over the
	place, and people who didn't bother reading it carefully
	mistook it for some sort of corporate policy against
	"employee interest" conferences. A group within IM&T
	responded with a memo pointing out that avoiding the
	backups was more trouble than it was worth, and suggesting
	a better approach was simply to make sure they didn't
	get out of hand (i.e., establishing disk quotas for them).
	Infante replied with a "Yeah, that's a good idea" memo.
	See LESLIE:EMPLOYEE_INTEREST_NOTING, note 20.1, for these
	last two memos. The original memo is in there somewhere
	as well.

	I see no problem with starting a new music theory conference...

Hardware will consist of two mini-key Casio keyboards ('240 and '540)
and the DH200.  (Nothing over $100).

Software will include some public domain sequencer software, samples
from the club's collection of "Music Studio" format music files, the
"ROBO-BOP" shareware drum sequencer, and if I can figure it out in
time, a demonstration of the demo of the new music program TCB-TRACKER,
a sample sound player.

Acton Christian Church is at 45 Minot Ave, which is near the
intersection of Rt 2 and Rt 27.  Turn NORTH at the first traffic light
on Rt 2 that is EAST of Rt 27. (This intersection is near the entrance
of Digital's Piper Road plant.)  This road takes you past the Conant
school.  Beyond the school, you reach a bend in the road.  Where the
road bends to the left, you turn RIGHT, onto Minot Ave. the church is
right there on your LEFT.  Big church sign on the front lawn, you can't
miss it.

    Well Dan Infante has raised his head again. He has resent the memo
    asking for files to be marked "nobackup". I have raised some questions
    on this, and also mentioned the business related aspects of the file
    and may have staved off any action for the moment. Dan is aparantly
    reacting to a note to SONATA::IDEAS_CENTRAL which called for
    elimination of non business related notesfiles to save money. It was a
    matter of time for that...
    
    Attached are my comments to management.
    


    We recieved that memo a long time ago the first time. At that time I
    requested the IM staff to comment. The feedback I got was that we in
    ASO were not going to implement this. Later I heard of/saw a memo from
    Dan withdrawing the original request. I'll look for that tomorrow and
    if I can find it I will copy you on it. In the meantime I think that we
    in ASO should notify all moderators of this action, should we take it,
    and allow notesfile users etc. the opportunity to look elsewhere for a
    home if the lack of backups causes them concern. If we do, in fact,
    impliment this (no backups) then I believe that we ought to allow a
    grace period for a new home for this data to be sought out and secured
    if that is desired.

    RE: Commusic. Commusic is work related for several groups in
    engineering, the CDA audio engineering sought input from the users of
    the file, a lively discussion is taking place there, with participation
    from both recreational and professional users of this notesfile and
    there is a lively discussion of that future product going on. I'd be
    willing to discuss the details with you, but I think it's at least
    marginally business related and we should probably leave that
    particular notesfile alone.

    My understanding is that Dan is out on a limb on this, with few or no
    supporters. Upper management has in the past blessed employee interest
    notesfiles and has left it up to individual managers to manage
    performance and abuse of this unofficial benefit. Other than Dan's memo
    I have yet to see any major Corporate policy change here, and I know
    that other groups are not carrying out similar policies. It's doubtful
    that there is much, if any real benefit or cost savings suggested here.
    Let's face it a couple of tapes isn't much, and we'll lose that the
    first time a notesfile gets corrupted, just in operator/system manager
    time identifying the cause of the problem and dealing with the notefile
    user queries from all over the company.

    It's possible that the answer is going to be for the groups who feel
    this is work related to take ownership of the notesfile. So once again
    there is a possibility that this file might like/need a new home.
    
    I offer to perform the backups myself, to TK70 or some similar medium,
    if it becomes necessary. However my committment to that work would be a
    weekly full backup, and real work could possibly cause that to
    sometimes be less than every single week.
    
    Does anyone have a pointer the Infante's retraction?

    Music Systems (previously known as Kurzweil Music Systems) asked me
    to put in this note.
       Basically, one of the principal engineers at Young Chang just
    gave notice which means there will probably be an opening at Young 
    Chang.  My friend there thinks that there will be an ad for the
    position in this Sunday's paper.  The only information I have on
    the job is that they would be looking for someone quite experienced
    and knowledgable in electronics and music.
       Young Chang, by the way, is located in Waltham, MA but in a

The baby is in good health, but did manage to take in some of
the birthing fluid as she was born.  So for right now, the doctors
are taking extra special care of her to make sure everything is okay.
 
Dan and Jill should be home from the hospital within 2-3 days.
They are staying at Nashua Memorial Hospital.

Yeah, I usually have a knee-jerk response to head for the wastebasket when I
see that many exclamation points. However, the remainder of the pamphlet
contains a lot of material which gives the program credibility enough to pass
the hype off as part of the territory. (The seminars are co-sponsored by
Musician magazine, BTW.) It sounds like a cram course in how the "biz" works,
which (as often observed in this conference) can have a lot more to do with
reaching your personal goals than your music itself.

A large part of the space is devoted to testimonial letters, with some decent
qualifications on the part of the authors. Phone numbers are included with each
letter, too- nice touch. The free A&R and T-100 directories and PAN Membership
contribute a lot to the package's overall value no matter *what* the seminar
turns out to be, reducing the "risk factor" substantially, IMHO.

The cost, BTW, is $195 for the full seminar (two days); they also have various
other "packages" consisting of directories, tapes, whatever, for various prices.
The seminar locations (at least in *my* brochure) are New York, Philadelphia,
Baltimore, Washington (DC), Boston, Hartford, Providence, and Chicago.

The toll-free number to register is 1-800-448-3621. I'm sure they'd send you an
info pamphlet such as I received, though.

If anyone attends one of these (or has *already* attended), comments would be
appreciated- it looks like something I'll eventually want to sign up for.

    Interesting, alpha-omega relationship between the last two postings. 
    Both are seminars backed by big names in the music biz.  As I read John
    Stewart's ENSONIQ posting, about all the great DEMOS you can make with
    their gear, I was thinking, "screw 'demos' - I want to SELL the music I
    make".  That's a strange position for an SGU manufacturer to take - as
    if they're loath to even IMPLY that you could actually DO IT
    professionally with their stuff.. am I picking nits ?  The attitude
    seems to be that making good-sounding demos is the best any of you can
    aspire to.   Maybe their motto, in our marketing terms is ",YET"
    
    And Bob Ashforth's posting, about the 'Doing Music and Nothing Else'
    seminar is a refreshing flip-side to the hold-back attitude from
    ENSONIQ.  It purports to present solid guidance on really, really doing
    it.  Maybe their motto, in our marketing terms is "Just Do It"
    
    The ENSONIQ seminar depressed me, and the 'DMANE' seminar cheered me

    I think the powers that be are focusing on demos because lots of
    musicians gig and a good demo can help them get business.  In addition,
    there's the chance that a good demo can lead to a record company
    signing you up.  But, as for getting into "the biz" - the idea that a
    good demo will automagically get a record contract is a myth.  Was true
    decades ago.  Not true anymore, but people are still infatuated with
    the myth.
    
    I think the current dogma is that your first album will open doors and
    *might* break even.  It's the albums that follow that will bring in any
    real income.  And, the fewer levels of folks between you and the market
    the better.  Minimum needed is a good manufacturer, a good marketer and
    good distributors.  This, of course, coming from one who is watching,
    learning and has yet to cough up the big bucks necessary for this to 
    happen ...

    I sorta think that's a bit over-reacting to the Ensoniq thing.
    
    I don't think that a seminar that explains how to get "top quality"
    productions out of Ensoniq gear is an implication that it's the
    best any of us can aspire to.
    
    That strikes me as a bold inference.
    
    If there's an implication I get out of it, it's that it's difficult to
    make recordings of comparable quality to what you could make in a
    "real" studio, but sorta implies that it's possible to come close with
    Ensoniq equipment - that doesn't strike me as an unreasonable
    statement.
    
    Although I never cease to be amazed by the talent in this conference,
    I would tell you in all candor that I don't think I've heard one
    COMMUSIC submission tape that I would have been fooled into thinking
    it was done in a fully equipt professional studio, assisted by trained
    recording professionals.
    
    Oddly enough, when I first started reading this conference, I might not
    have said that cause THEN I might not have been able to appreciate
    the difference.

INSTANT NOW!  @  BUNRATTY's  in  ALLSTON  on  OCTOBER 16th.
    
Joe Minville and I have a band called INSTANT NOW!  We've been given a spot at
Bunratty's in Allston on Wednesday, October 16th.  We're the 2nd of 3 bands
that night and we go on at 10:30pm.  We were given this gig on short notice, so
if we can get a lot of people to come see us, it'll look real good and maybe
the club will have us back on a weekend (which would make us VERY happy).

The band is very dancable.  It's high energy music...something between CREAM,
the BEACH BOYS and the BEATLES.  We do mostly originals, but we do covers by
JIMI HENDRIX, RAMONES and GODFATHERS to name a few.

    A few years ago I attended a multi-vendor big deal MIDI show in NYC,
    around this time of year I believe. Is anyone aware of such an event?

    You meant AES? (91st AES Convention at the New York Hilton).
    
    Great show!  Here are the things that I found interesting.
    
    -  The growing market for digital recording and editing systems.
       Roland, Yamaha, Turtle Beach, Hybrid Systems, Digidesign,
       Otari and many others showed amazing products.
    
    - Opcode and Mark of the Unicorn showed Studio Vision and Digital
      Performer MAC-based sequencing programs with digital recording
      and editing capabilities.  I believe Cubase (on PC) had similar
      capabilities.  Looks like the Macintosh is ahead of the pack
      as far as music software goes....although the PC world is catching
      on fast.  WaveFrame showed a very impressive Audio/Video Production
      system with an IBM PC front end.
      Opcode announced and demonstrated a very impressive midi gadget for
      the Macintosh.  Studio 5 is a follow-on to Studio 3....a top-of-
      the-line 240 channel MIDI and SMPTE interface/processor/patchbay/
      synchronizer.  If had the money, I would upgrade from a Studio 3
      to Studio 5 right away.
    
    - Computer software dominated the show.....and most vendors were
      showing off new products with computer front ends in many cases.
    
    Very good show...overall.

Hi,I heard about some details on AudioFrame.
(Yes,WaveFrame Corporation's AudioFrame)

It has DAR(Digital Audio Rack) and IBM PC(Front end,MS-WINDOWS base).
DAR includes 600MB Hard disk,Digital Signal Prosesser,8m/m MT,LAN I/F...
(DAR's 8 or 10U Rack mount module.)

AudioFrame is 'DeskTop Studio'.It's Feature are...

* 4ch Digital Harddisk Recorder.(Expandable to 32ch)
* Multitrack MIDI sequencer.(Integrated with HardDisk Recorder)
* 16ch Digital Mixer and Digital Reverb.(Expandable by board module)

    WaveFrame's audio production systems are built around a proprietary
    Digital Audio Bus to do RAM-based sampling, pitch shifting, digital
    mixing, equalization, disk recording and digital recording.
    
    The Lucas-based video product could be very useful for post-
    production work.  I did not see real animation but, that doesn't
    mean that it doesn't have one.  Many bells and whistles as far
    as I remember....allowing you to edit video and sync/lock to
    audio in a very clean fashion.  Oh...yes...you can add your
    own effects...if you want to call that animation.  
    Animation could be applied to both audio and video in this case.

    I just saw them this past Sunday in Denver...they were wonderful as
    usual.  This was the first time I've seen them with an orchestra.  The
    orchestra stuff is usually recorded.  The music was great but it seemed
    like the videos were 'off sync'.  Who cares about the videos though, I was
    there for the music.

Well the axe is falling. Commusic is the  number one hot file on the DNEAST 
cluster for 6 weeks in a row. This is during prime time 6am-6pm. Since we're
having a resource problem here with the cluster I've been asked to do the 
following, move Commusic.

There a a couple of alternatives:

1. Somebody else with a machine host the conference
2. Move it to a less utilized resource, ie: a microvax, probably a II with 
   RD54 disk drives.

We have the microvax, but are not sure which one it will be as of yet. Service 
will definately be slower if it moves to a microvax, you've been getting served
by a 6430, 6420 and a couple of 8800's. 

So what will it be?

    I sent mail to Dave (Bottom)  & Edd a few weeks back about it being
    time to archive.  We pretty much have a good keyword system in place
    that would allow easy retrieval of old material.
    
    We also need to convert the conference anyway to allow changes to key 1
    (meaning SET NOTE/NOTE= would now work).  I doubt that we'll see any
    significant performance increase by doing a CONVERT, since there isn't
    much internal fragmentation.  Unfortunately, a 110k block files likely
    has several extension headers ($ DUMP/HEAD/BLOCK=COUNT=0 and look at
    the retrieval ptrs list).
    
    I don't think I can do much about hosting the old conference, but I
    might be able to host the new one down here on DYPSS1.  Don't know what
    the network response would be like, though.  (I get crappy response to
    DNEAST, FWIW.)

    I've created note 1000 as the official place for new-comers to ask

    should I buy?"
    
    This should be a big benefit for those entering the world of MIDI to
    learn from those who went before them.
    
    I've tagged the note with keywords "GETTING_STARTED",
    "FIRST_TIME_BUYER", and "CONSUMER_KEYBOARDS", and changed the 
    conference announcement to point new-comers to the right place.
    
    While I'm not going to go thru the conference moving existing notes,
    any new entries that are a variation on this theme will be moved to
    note 1000. In all honesty, I probably WON'T notify the author of moved
    notes by mail.

    I'm concerned about my favorite Employee Interest Notesfile.
    
    An MVII with RD54..hmm.  
    
    SALSA is a 4000-300 with RF drives, one of which has over 900K free.
    But then we have a relatively slow 56KB line to the EASYnet.  And I'm
    no longer the system manager. 
    
    Too bad NOTES isn't Open.  There sure is a lot of RISC power and disk
    space in this office, including my desk..

in the extended LAN this side of ZK, but I've got the disks, if you've got the
patience...

    If nothing else works out, I can host it down here on a temporary
    basis, but ONLY on a temp basis.  Same thing applies here as in TUO -
    relatively slow link to network, I don't own the machine, etc.
    
    Regardless of what happens, it is my contention that it is time to
    archive this thing.  It's simply too unwieldy to find information,
    keywords notwithstanding - there ARE RMS caching limits, you know; and
    this thing is in serious need of some RMS optimization.
    
    Whatever works ... I'd like to retain moderatorship, regardless of what
    happens.
