204.0. "JUNO 106 MIDI Implementation" by EINSTN::SPEED () Thu Dec 12 1985 10:58

Is there anyone out there in MIDI land that has a MIDI implementation chart
for a Roland JUNO 106? Supposedly the new ones are coming with this chart
as part of the owner's manual but since mine is one of the originals, it
didn't come with one.

If you have one, please send a photocopy to:

Have you found a MIDI chart yet? I just bought a JUNO-106 last night.
Great synth for the bucks. I'll try to remember to bring in the manual
on Monday and send you a copy of the chart if you're still looking for one.

    This has nothing to do with midi, but have you 106 owners programed
    a good acoustic piano sound? I'm borrowing a friends 106 and
    I'm curious if it's been done? I won't have it long enough to
    experiment too much.

    Thanks in advance.

204.4Not In The CardsERLANG::FEHSKENSFri Aug 22 1986 18:5614
    An acoustic piano on the -106 is virtually impossible, basically
    for two reasons:

    	1) There's no way to get the "3 octaves plus a seventh" harmonic
    that so strongly characterizes a piano's sound.

    	2) There's no way to get the keyboard tracking of envelope times
    that affects the piano's sound as you move up the keyboard.

    The -106 has some acceptable *electric* piano patches, but an acoustic
    is beyond it.

204.12new question on an old machine...GENRAL::J_NICHOLSONMon Mar 05 1990 21:0312
    Does anyone know if it is possible to invoke a MIDI DUMP of the patch
    info on a JUNO-106? I vague remember seeing a service manual (a few
    years back) that had alot of sysex information in the back of the
    manual. Are their any sysex commands that cause the Juno-106 to spill
    it's guts? (sorry, you know what I mean...8*)

    The reason I'm asking is to dump the patch info to a MC-500 for
    storage. Or am I doomed to cassette tape only?

    Thanks for any info....

204.13It's missing on the MKS-7DDIF::EIRIKURGood tines, bad tines, you know....Tue Mar 06 1990 02:5712
Interesting question....

I went into my MKS-7 manual (MKS-7 is like a 106, but with velocity), and found
nothing on getting sysex dumps of patches. Changing 'em, yes. Loading 'em,
yes.  Reading them back, no.

Hmmm, maybe there is a control-shift look over your shoulder and sneeze button
press combination?

204.14Midi Dump of Patch info... No Way !SHIRE::ESPICTue Mar 06 1990 06:2414

	Jeff,

	I own a Juno106 and a MC300, and have been asking to Roland guys the
same question...

	I would like to have someone else here telling the countrary, but there
is no possibility for midi dumping the Juno106 patch info. My MC's Bulk
Librarian would have been so happy!

Christian.

204.151 patch at a timeTASK::GLEASONTo boldly code...Tue Mar 06 1990 12:169
    I have an HS-60, which is essentially a Juno 106 with integral
    speakers. While I haven't heard of any commands that will let you do
    bulk dumps, I've found that whenever I manually do a program change,
    the sysex data for the newly-activated patch is sent over MIDI. So, if
    you want to manually select all 128 patches and have some means of
    storing the data, you should be able to do what you want.

    Thanks for the replies, everybody!!!

    Daryl, thanks for reminding me about the sysex going out when changing
    the patch; I forgot about that one. I'll try it tonight!

204.17Switch setting IIIREGENT::SIMONETue Mar 06 1990 13:489
    As I recall, there was a switch on my long departed Juno-106 which
    could be set to I, II, or III and this affects what happens when you
    press the patch buttons.

    When set to I, no patch info will be sent. When set to II, only the
    patch number will be sent. When set to III the patch sys-ex data will
    be sent.

    .15 and .17 are correct - in mode III, the Juno-106 will SysEx dump the
    data for a patch when it is selected. It will also transmit SysEx
    data for any edits performed on the patch. There is no way to SysEx
    dump *all* the patches, except by manually selecting each of them.
