2240.0. "USENET Equipment Poll" by AQUA::ROST (Everyone loves those dead presidents) Thu Jan 18 1990 16:53

In case some of you are curious as to what real people (whoever *they* might
be) are using for gear, rather than just what the big stars are using on the
new Michael Jackson record, here's the results of an informal poll from the
USENET. You Y-word haters may be surprised at some of the results!!!

Since my last posting on this subject, I have received over 100 more
responses, bringing the total to 153 people. The poll lists 450
synths and 85 drum machines, so the average number of synths per
person is almost 3, and the average number of drum machines per
person is 1/2. This second number isn't really fair, since some
synths have drums in them, and some people have samplers they use.

For the sake of brevity, the following two lists show the top 10
items in each category. I will post the full lists in separate
postings.

Synths:

31 Yamaha TX81Z 12 Alesis HR16
15 Yamaha FB01 10 Roland TR505
14 Ensoniq EPS 6 Yamaha DD5
14 Yamaha DX7 5 Kawai R50
13 Roland D110 5 Roland R8
12 Korg M1 5 Yamaha RX17
10 Casio CZ101 5 Yamaha RX7
10 Roland MT32 4 Roland R5
 9 Kurzweil 1000PX 3 Roland TR707
 9 Roland D10 3 Yamaha RX15

I found it kind of interesting that the Yamaha TX81Z and FB01 were at
the top of the list, even more so when you consider that they are
basically the same machine. To me, that says that one of the biggest
factors in buying a synth is price, though performance is certainly
important, too (the TX81Z is no slouch). I believe that if someone
could build a multi-timbral analog synth for less than $500, it
would be successful enough to prove to Metlay and Brett that we're not
stupid, just cheap.

>
> The last sentence above was in reference to an anti-digital discussion
> that has been going on over the net.
>

It was great to see some of the great old synthesizers on the list. An
OSCar. A number of the Korg MSes. Lots of Moog and Arp stuff. Oddly,
nobody responded with a Realistic Moog (I had one of these but I sold
it) or any PAiA stuff (anyone remember the Gnome?).

Also, just for the heck of it, I decided to gather statistics on
manufacturers:

	106 Yamaha
	105 Roland
	58 Korg
	37 Ensoniq
	23 Kawai
	23 Casio
	20 Kurzweil
	15 Oberheim
	15 Sequential Circuits
	12 Moog

The top 3 are no surprise. I didn't think Roland was doing so well,
though if you consider that about half of the Korg number comes from
the modern era (after Yamaha bought Korg), Yamaha still has a good
lead.

It's good to see Ensoniq up there. If they could do an inexpensive
(~$500) synth, they might really make a dent in the market. Then
again, they might go bankrupt, and I'd rather see them stay around.

The full list, which I didn't put in, did have some D-50s. Those you

pointed out that the two highest scorers in both the synth and drum

If there's really interest, and people trust me (I mean, I've seen most

	a) send me mail, listing your gear
	b) I add mail gear to summary listing, removing names etc
	c) I DELETE/PURGE the mailgram
	d) I post listing after X days

Given that I have more stuff than I have time to play with, AND that I

Although many of us have already discussed some of our equipment
elsewhere in these notes (those of us who have know where those
places are), I must agree with those who are a bit skittish about
giving inventory checklists of their equipment. This is a bit off
the subject, but it seems like an appropriate time to mention that
all of us SHOULD have complete listings of what we own (including
serial #'s) and be sure that our insurance agents have copies of
those lists. This is crucial not just in case of theft, but fire
or other disaster. And besides, if you can't trust you friendly
insurance agent, who can you trust?

Well, I personally don't care to know if my equipment is in the top ten
or not however I have probably listed everything I own at one time or
another espcially in the 'for sale' note. It makes me wonder, if people
should have such fears amongst DEC employees, should I put my stuff
for sale in the WANT ADD? Just about anybody buys that thing. I must
admit that I am sometimes a little concerned about folks who come to my
house to check out equipment that I have up for sale, fearing they may
have ulterior motives, but so far I have had no problems.

And now to freak out the paranoid ones. Won't it be safe to assume, from
the discussion we have here, who owns what? And what wat about the
'introduction note', most people list their equipment. (Note I never
did introduced myself - too embrassed about what I owned at the time.)
So isn't it kind of late to worry about that now.

Paranoid or not, Brad's offer to serve as a clearinghouse for equipment

most paranoid of us trust only Brad (a trust that is warranted and that

2240.32the Kurlan story in a nutshell; and let's do itDYO780::SCHAFERBrad - boycott hell.Tue Jan 23 1990 14:3230
In a nutshell - several years ago, a DEC employee walked into Kurlan's
and was made mention of our "user group" - the Kurlan rep responded "Oh
    - you mean the COMMUSIC notesfile" and proceeded to produce pages
(quantity unknown) of extracts from the conference.

This was done without the knowledge of any of the major conference
participants (to the best of my recollection), not to mention the then
    moderator Jim Ravan.

    On to the survey.....

Anyone interested in participating in a nameless equipment poll should
send me mail before the end of this month. I'll log the equipment
(sans name & address) and send you a reply mail when I've blasted and
purged your mailgram. Sometime during the first few weeks of February,
I'll post a summary listing of equipment. No names will be associated
    with any gear.

If you doubt my integrity, feel free to send mail to any of the
moderators. I have no intention of distributing names or equipment
lists, and will use these things only to post a summary topic in this
conference. If you don't trust me, that's okay too. You just won't
    get included.

I'm going to be out of the office 2-3 days a week for the next few
mos., so don't expect "I blasted your mail" responses within 5 minutes.

I've already received a few mailgrams (thanks), and they include
synths, controllers, drum machines, computers, sequencers (including
software sequencers), librarian/editing software, FX, amps, mixers,
tape decks (including number of tracks), etc.

Other categories might include racks, cases, & gig bags (might be
interesting to see how we carry our gear), MIDI accessories for
the computer (such as OpCode's Studio3), and things of that nature.

Far as I'm concerned, anything that you use to make your music/studio
happen is okay by me. I'm just compiling and reducing the data. Of
course, silly things like milk crates for keyboard stands (which I use
