1087.0. ""ROCK SCHOOL" Program On Cable TV" by DELNI::GOSS () Mon Dec 21 1987 12:46

Has anyone ever watched ROCK SCHOOL on cable... I caught it
for the first time this weekend. I think it's on vh-1 but I'm not
sure. It was pretty interesting to get some Idea's from excellant
musicians. They have actual interviews with people like Tony Banks
from Genesis and the police's guitar player... Since I'm new to
this midi stuff I found the show pretty cool. They give ya like
a half hour lesson on harmonies and different samplings... I love
listening to other peoples ideas and how they produce them...

I've never seen it before but I liked the idea that they talked
about bass, guitar, keys, vocals etc... And how to mix the sounds up
between the instruments. How one instrument compliments the other
like the bass playing the root notes while the guitar player plays
the chords, then vice versa where the guitar player plays the same
chord and the bass player changes the root notes... And alot of
this stuff you have surely heard by famous musicians... But it's
definately got things you may not have thought of...

Like I said I'm new to this midi stuff so it was great seeing people
that new exactly what they were doing demonstrating the different
sampling's on keys... Man they made it look so easy!!!!!

    	anyone else seen this show????

I think the aforementioned program is a B.B.C. product produced
basically for us wimps on the Eastern Side of the Atlantic who would
rather forget our "worst" ever gigs.

The most recent rockschool programs were in fact the second series
and tend to teeter between absolute simplicism and complicated sampling
ideas only half explained. They are compulsive viewing for any Muso
even if the presentation is a bit wooden, if only to see what they
get up to next. Incidently the new synth player did most of his
demonstrations on synths on a "Memory Moog". Circa 79?

1087.5Made for a wimp, but I like it too!NCVAX1::ALLENTue Dec 22 1987 14:3620
I first saw this series on a visit to my family last spring,
when it was playing on public TV in New York City. I thought it
was very interesting, even though I had no notions about buying
a synth at the time. Two weeks ago, Minnesota Public TV started
playing the series on Saturday mornings. Unfortunately, it's at
    a really bad time 10:30am (who's home at 10:30am on a Saturday?).

The one that really interested me, last spring, was an examination
of Reggae music, which I love. I thought, "Yeah, what do these
guys know", but after it was over, felt like I understood the tech-
nique of playing Reggae. This in turn helped me appreciate what
    I was hearing, better.

I could see how for some of the HARDCORE COMMUSICers, alot of
this material might be old hat, but I would heartily recommend it
to people like myself who are new to this game. This is one of
those shows that that makes me wish I had a VCR.

For wimps ha ha ha tell Tony Banks he doesn't know what he's talking
about... The show does have basic's but it also has some good ideas
for the beginner and pro... I didn't know the audience for this
notes file were so proffesional. I don't know about you but even
when I play with musicians that have just started playing I can
usually find something that they have learned that I can take advantage
    of...

Ya know every time someone puts a note in one of these subjects
someone always seems to find something wrong.. Please call me anytime
I'd like some instructions on how to do music the right way.

AS a matter of fact I invite you to my house to show me your
way... Then I won't have to bother listening to smucks like
Tony banks or crummy guitar players like Santana!!!!

I never got the impression that anyone was putting down Tony Banks,
etc. It seemd that what was being said was that for the MIDI enthusiast with
an average amount of experience (as represented by this conference), the
info related in the RockSchool videos were elemental, basic. That's not to
say that the videos were juvenile, or that the instructors were morons. It's
just to say that the videos were geered to a less technical audience - and
there's certainly a market for that. No judgement implied that I can see.

It's been said before, of late, that this conference is a gold mine of
technical information and discussion with an extremely high information/text
ratio. I believe its true, especially when I talk to people who don't have
this kind of a resource for their MIDI education. For the first half a year to
a year, I just sat here soaking in the available accumulated knowledge of the
participants before I began joining in, asking questions, supplying occassional
answers.

This is not meant as a cut, in any way, Brian, but I think you'll find
you don't need to have your defences up here anywhere near as much as you do in
other conferences. This is a very supportive group that resides here, and if
you think you're being cut up by a comment, chances are you're misunderstanding
what's being said.

I think if you read my reply that you will find that the wimps I
referred to were we U.K. viewers who might relate to the style a
little more. We *are* on the Eastern Side of the Atlantic aren't
we. Far be it from me to act as a judge of anybodies capability.
Shit, I can't even spell properly.

I did also say that it was compulisve stuff. Doesn't sound like
a put-down to me. But there you go ?

Well my point was watch if you want maybe you can get something
from it. It's better than Mr. Rogers!!!! I have already said that
alot of it was basic but I also think they have some good idea's
you might find interesting... I also liked the idea that they interview
top names and have them talk about there own style and why it works...

Did anyone happen to tape this week's Rock School? That is, Saturday
January 9's show on channel 11 in New Hampshire. I am trying to compile
these shows onto one tape, but missed it this week.

Send mail to HPSRAD::NORCROSS if you care to help me out.

Thanks,

Does anybody know if this show is broadcast on WGBH Boston (no cable,
