871.0. "Yamaha DX7 FM Synth - Transformer Gets Too Hot" by MARVIN::MACHIN () Thu Jul 16 1987 11:25

    How hot can a synth run without breaking?
    My DX7 gets extremely hot above the transformer,
    just about where you'd place a cool beer. This leads
    me to suspect that there may be a fault.

    Any other DX7 owners noticed a hot spot?

    components tend to fail at higher temperatures. But some
    technologies run hot. You still need to remove the heat.

    Question youre asking is really: Is hot normal for DX7.

    Sorry, dont know.

    It wont run hot for long.

    The hot spot is normal. As we all know, DX7s really smoke! The
    components are far enough away from the transformer that it's no
    problem.

    Mine has run like that for three years, with no failures.

871.3Not a bug, its a heat dump....EUREKA::REG_BN_ew E_ngland C_onservatory disks ?Thu Jul 23 1987 16:477

    	Thats why they put the transformer there, right under where you'd
    place a cool beer. They're counting on you to provide the liquid
    cooling, dammed clever if Y'ask me, but you didn't.

    Oh come now, if you consider where the DX7 was designed,
    it should be obvious that it is a built-in Sake warmer!
    ...could be quite a selling point in some circles, and
    come to think of it, its not a bad idea at all...
