2701.0. "Computer line conditioners for studio use?" by MAJTOM::ROBERT () Thu Aug 22 1991 15:52

  I've got plenty of "surge-protection" but nothing that conditions the line
  as far as steady voltage, removal of RFI, EMI, etc. I know Furman makes one,
  as well as some others, but I've been procrastinating on it, I suppose mostly
  because of $$. (I think the Furman one is like $500)

  Now I was just breezing thru the DEC-direct and PCI catalogs and noticed
  that there were several Uninterruptible Power Supplies available. The main
  purpose of these is to keep a system up for X minutes after a power outage so
  that clean shutdowns may be performed. However, one ad mentioned
  "elimating noise" to the computer, and several mentioned "pure sine-wave
  output". No specific reference to what kind of noise, such as RFI, EMI,
  but wouldn't pure sine-wave output infer that it was totally "clean"?

  The prices seem reasonable, and with the EPP discount of 40% it's more
  than a bargain compared to the Furman, with the added benefit of having
  continuous power during an outage. (Which would be nice if you're in the
  middle of sequencing a huge piece you haven't saved recently!)

  I have two questions:

  1) Is this suitable for a studio setup?

  2) How do I figure out how much stuff I can power off of it? Each model
     has a rating in VA, so would that mean a 110VA model would allow me to
     power 1 amp worth of stuff @110V? What would safe "head-room" be?

  Thanks in advance,

-TR

2701.1I gotta Tripp-Lite conditionerTALK::HARRIMAN'Politically Correct' is an oxymoronThu Aug 22 1991 17:3219

	Dunno about Furman, but I bought an 1800W Tripp-Lite conditioner
	for my studio since the EPS was being real touchy about power.
	As it turns out, it helped that whole end of the studio.

	The one I got is a regulator/filter, provides a constant 117V load-
	balanced with EMI/RFI filtering in it. Spike/surge protection,
	handles input voltages down to 90V before it shuts down, up to
	130V the other way. It is NOT a UPS, but it does seem to do
	well as a surge protector/hum abater.

	I think you can get 1800W units for around $300. That seems to
	do me pretty well, so long as I don't put the power amp in the
	protected outlet.

	fwiw.
