2660.0. "Subwoofer Systems" by NIOMAX::LAING (Soft-Core Cuddler*Jim Laing*229-7808) Mon Jun 10 1991 01:11

    I'm considering buying a sub-woofer system to add to my current system.
    Currently I'm using 2 RAMSA WS-200 speakers (rated at 80Hz-20KHz).
    I've checked out the Ramsa subwoofer system (WS-A240 subwoofer and the
    WS-SP2A processor). I realize that I need another channel (or 2 for
    2 subwoofers) of amplification.

    What other choices do I have? Anyone with experiences (good or bad)
    with these? Do all subwoofers require a "processor" or do some just
    use a crossover or similar "passive" method of isolating very low
    frequencies?

    Applications are (1) keyboard amplification, (2) DJing, (3) occasional
    use of drum machine through system.

    Any comments/advice/suggestions welcomed!

    	Thanks,
    	Jim

	"processor" = "active crossover".

	You might find that active crossovers work better. You need a beefy
	passive crossover otherwise, those lo frequencies are quite high
	on RMS wattage. As for how it sounds (active vs passive), I haven't
	really been able to tell the difference, especially in an environment
	with lots of extraneous noise (like while DJing, gigging, etc).

	fwiw,

    Hmm, the processor goes BEFORE the power amp ... I see how this is
    different from "passive crossover" which goes AFTER the power amp.

    RAMSA's processor lets the subwoofer (amp) see frequencies below
    about 125 Hz. . .
