2598.0. "I NEED SMPTE/SEQUENCER HELP!!" by SOFBAS::FARREN () Tue Mar 19 1991 15:21

I have an EMU systems SP-12. MIDI in/out/thru, reads and writes
SMPTE (four different fps settings) and has two banks of 2.5 seconds
of sampling time. Not bad for demos. Pretty good using live cymbals.

What I need to do is get a sequencer that can read the same smpte
and control keyboards or samplers so I don't have to 'print' on my
1" 8-track. I borrowed some gear and it worked great once...
I used a Roland MC-500 with another box and it worked fine. I don't
know what the other box was.

Does onyone know if the SP-12 outputs MIDI information that a sequencer
can read as tempo? How do I get one SMPT stripe to control the SP-12
AND a sequencer which can control the synths/samplers?

I need a sequencer that can do this. I do not need alot of channels or
memory as I would only use it in the studio for one song at at time.

    I offload the SP-12 to a commador 5 1/2" floppy....it works great.
Hopefully the sequencer in question could offload on the same disk
    drive.

    Any suggestions??

I use SMPTE and a MAC running Performer, with an 8-track deck. The
only E-Mu gear I have is an EMAX.. which has bunches of SP-12 mapped
    format percussion samples.

SMPTE is an audio signal. If the SP-12 prints and later reads the SMPTE
track itself, you can't get a sequencer to read the SMPTE (audio) because
the audio cable is plugged into the SP-12, which follows it. You could
always get another SMPTE-to-MIDI converter box, which would then
start/stop the SP-12 and another sequencer using MIDI, but I don't hear
    you wanting to do that.

    >Does onyone know if the SP-12 outputs MIDI information that a sequencer
    >can read as tempo?

Probably. Sequence start and stop have been in the MIDI spec since the
beginning, as has MIDI sync. You need to borrow a sequencer for a few
    hours. That's the only proof.

    >How do I get one SMPT stripe to control the SP-12 AND a sequencer which
    >can control the synths/samplers?

My assumption is that the SP-12 starts and stops based on the SMPTE
stripe. *IF* it outputs MIDI sync/clock AND sequence start/stop info,
*ANY* sequencer (hardware or software) that obeys external clock will
happily control all your other SGU's.

    >so I don't have to 'print' on my 1" 8-track.

Well, you'll still have to have the SMPTE stripe on track 8. Keep
those tape tracks free for analog audio.

    best of luck. karl
