2577.0. "lets talk drum pads" by MRCSSE::LEITZ (butch leitz) Mon Feb 18 1991 18:40

       Hi guys,

       I'm in the market to add some pads to my drum stuff.
       I've used (many times) the Tama (?name?) pads and of
       everything I've tried, they felt the most natural...

       but I haven't tried everything. I've played several
       times on the pd-31s (33s?) from roland (the triangle
       shaped jobs with the 4 triggers per) and the venerable
       simmons pads, both the older ones and newer ones.

       The simmons were like playing bricks. pretty bad. lousy
       tactiles. The roland pads weren't too bad, weren't too
       great, and i didn't like the hard plastic casing the
       side triggers were in (that I kept hitting by mistake).

       I tried these pads over a year ago and don't know
       if either of these vendors have yeansop (yet-even-another-
       new-style-of-pad) that may respond better.

       The Tama ones were great, but I haven't seen them
       around for a while (the set I was playing on when I was
       with Ralph was owned by somebody in the band who got
       them out of the want-ads - and i've never seen any
       for sale in there any time I bothered looking!)

       So: several questions in one:

       - what new pads are around that are:
       	reasonable cost;
       	feel good;
       	durable;
       	don't look stupid?

      - anybody want to discuss goodness/badness of various pads
	available? (this in a subtle attempt to keep this note
	from ending up in the "for sale/wanted" topic!)

       -any body have a price on pads of any kind from SamAsh or
        any of the other good mail houses? I priced some of the
       	roland's out of sam ash (about a year ago) and can't
       even remember what the stuff was going for. Anybody do
       a recent prioce check of pads (from anywhere)?

       - anybody got some they want to sell (of any vendor)?

       thanks....

       (ps - my modest midi drum hooks include:
       		- octapad 1 (pad-8)
       		- hr16
       		- 2 dw EP1s (pedals)
		- 4 barcus berry pickups (for acoustics reinforcement)
		  (you know how light I play!!) %*)

       what i'd like to add:
       		- 4 to 6 seperate pads. easy!)
	what i'd like to avoid:
		- any more "brain" boxes (analog to midi boxes)
		  (i'll do the "zelda" hack to the octapad if
		   i need more inputs available)(which i will).
		- no bass pad(s) wanted. the EP1s can't be replaced!

{moderator, i looked back 6 months and didn't see pertinent notes
relative to the subject (ie, that were timely) but please move this
if I overlooked the topic elsewhere.}

Have you tried ddrum pads?
IMO these have definitely the best touch of all pads.
The hitting surface is actually a real drum skin, only it
is heavily padded with foam rubber.

The pads look great, the construction is rigid, they have XLR
connectors, they are made in Sweden, and they cost $$$$$$.

I think Drums & Drumming Magazine had an 'equipment market survey',
or whatever you call it, a couple of months ago (Dec'90?).
Included was a comprehensive list of drum pads + prices, features, etc.

    Yo, Butch....

    Just happened to meet a MIDI drummer yesterday, he recommended buying
    an old Simmons outfit used. He thought Roland pads were worse than
    Simmons, but ddrums were the best (IHHO). He said ddrums pads are $400
    list *per pad*. Sell your house, who needs it? 8^) 8^)

    He also said noone in Worcester has any good e-drum stuff, he shops in
    NYC.

2577.4I saw some used pads for sale...REORG::WIEGLERThu Feb 21 1991 12:2617
    Hey Butch. The Music Factory in Manchester, NH has had used set of
    pads for a while now. I'm not sure about the details, but I *think*
    that the bass drum pad was a Simmons (with a CB700 logo, of all
    things), but the tom pads were something different, *possibly* old
    Dynacords, but I could be wrong. They were sort of triangular shaped
    but were definitely not Rolands. They had them set up with a small
    non-midi brain (I think a 4 channel Simmons) once, but the last time I
    was there, a few weeks ago, they were sort of stashed in a pile with
    assorted hardware. It might be worth a call to them to find out
    exactly what they are and how much they want for them.

    	Good luck,
    	Willy
    Also, Daddy's has been carrying a new line of pads made by a company
    called Sapphire. They look durable and their constructions is
    different from the typical Simmons/Roland/Tama type pads. You might
    want to check 'em out. They cost around $125 each, depending on size.

Thanks Willy...there's about 4 brands (I know of) that have the triangle look,

... Ok, I called them, here's the scoop: They have
1 bass pad and 1 tom pad in the store right now, both by Universal
Percussion. They had 2 bass pads and 6 tom pads but sold off some
of them just recently.

I've seen UP hardware here and there (use some of it) but haven't
seen any drums or pads from them, and for one pad it's not worth a
trip for me up there. If anybody else is looking for these and wants
one to mess around on, you might want to check it out if you're
in that neck of the woods.
