2258.0. "What should a beginner buy (+learning methods)?" by OLYMP::RUEFF (Ronny Rueff, Marketing, Switzerland) Thu Feb 08 1990 06:30

Here is a complete novice to playing an instrument what so ever... But I would
like to learn playing piano in the future.
Is a keyboard a good method to start with or will I spoil the 'piano feeling'?
Are there any learning aids (books, software etc.) I could use?
What kind of keyboard/digital piano makes sense for a beginner?
Which kind of instrument will lead me fastest to some kind of success?
Of course I don't want to spend a fortune for something I cannot make use of.
But I am willing to pay for something that will help move faster.

Thanks for any help!

I looked through the conference quite well and everything I found on my
specific question was more than half a year old at least - quite some
    time in the electronic world.
I really would appreciate any advice matching todays best value for
money in the low_end or starting_end of such a device.

    Still thankful..... -Ronny
2258.3Yamaha YPR-9SNIPER::HNELSONFri Feb 09 1990 09:3651
    Hi, Ronny,

One of the reasons this notes file is so fun is because the
contributors are mostly REAL MUSICIANS with tons of experience,
equipment, skills. If you dedicate twenty hours per week to music, in
five years you'll join them in marvelling how twisting Roland's latest
potentiameter enhances Mahler's Uncomposed Symphony 8^).

How DOES one spell potentiameter?! Every usualy says "pot."

Anyway, I'm a little further along than you are, and my slightly-dated
view of the market nominates the Yamaha YPR-9 as a good starting
keyboard. It has the following features:

o Touch-sensitive keyboard, i.e. if you hit the key harder, it
sounds louder. I cannot stress too much the importance of this
characteristic, for musical expression (and enjoying playing).

o Good sounds: the pianos are mediocre, but the electric piano is
pleasant, and the harsichord and vibes are excellant.

o 61 keys, battery operation with built-in speakers, external outs
if you want to use an amp.

o A "record" feature that remembers and replays your keystrokes.
This is good for playing one hand, then playing the other as you
listen to the first. Plus, when you get it right, you can call in
          your kids to applaud you.

o MIDI in and out. With this you can use the YPR to drive other
equipment for generating more sounds. I warn you: getting
fascinated with different sounds is a distraction (IMHO) and
represents a major hazard to your savings account.

o Cheap! In the Boston area, I see it in the $350/$450 range. I
paid $300 for mine, used. It's been around for several years,
but it was still in stores a few months ago, and may be still.

I think it's better to avoid learning on the piano, so you don't grow
attached to that feel. The synthesizers are unbelievably capable, and
you want to love their feel, if your enthusiasm carries you to serious
    engagement in this pursuit.

Re learning: I think conventional piano lessons are good, for
instruction and discipline. There are standard exercises to do (I'm
remembering Hammonds, but that's probably because I'm a B-3 nut). Mind
you, I'm not taking this advice myself, but I can testify to the
foolishness of the "I'll learn it on my own" alternative.

    Have fun! - Hoyt

2258.4a lesson ...MIZZOU::SHERMANECADSR::SHERMAN 235-8176, 223-3326Fri Feb 09 1990 15:5819
Interesting question. There are several ways to spell potentiometer,
all depending on context. If you are interested in a device with fixed
resistance between two terminals and a third terminal connected to a
wiper contact, making it possible to alter the resistances between the
two terminals and the third terminal, it's spelled
P-O-T-E-N-T-I-O-M-E-T-E-R. If you are interested in a similar device
with only one terminal and a wiper terminal, it's spelled
R-H-E-O-S-T-A-T. If you are a purveyour of sophisticated audio
equipment, it's spelled alternatively K-N-O-B or S-L-I-D-E-R. The use
of the word "pot" is often confusing. But, knowledgeable sales
personnel will understand exactly what you mean if while in the store
you use the oft-repeated phrase, "Has somebody been smoking pot in
here?" The correct response, is, of course, to assure you that the
audio equipment in the store truly "smokes", but that, with the
possible exception of the Alesis gear, the potentiometers are all of
the finest quality and only smoke when in non-smoking areas of public
    facilities.

    actually, i should talk!

i got a radio shack mixer for a gift. it does "get the job done" though.

If i was a first time keyboard buyer, i'd probably buy one of those
CASIO things for a hundred or so bucks. Then if i found i outgrew it
or whatever, i would get a korg, ensonic, roland, yamaha or whatever.

actually, i'd like something that sounds like a mellotron. good for
doing 60's stuff. i have no idea what is available.

    good luck to you.
