2216.0. "Yamaha Disklavier Digital Piano" by TALLIS::HERDEG (Mark Herdeg, LTN1-2/H09 226-6520) Wed Dec 27 1989 20:08

Boston Organ and Piano has been running an ad in the Globe for the past several
weeks:

   Yamaha's new Disklavier combines a fine traditional piano with
   state-of-the-art electronics.

   You can play it...
   or it will play itself.

   * Records
   * Transposes
   * Plays back
   * Equipped with MIDI
   * Available in upright or grand models

The ad shows a picture of an upright piano. Does anyone know any more about
this product? Is it just a regular piano with extra stuff added on? Can you
"turn off" the regular piano and use it as a MIDI controller? How extensive
is the MIDI support? The name suggests that it might have a disk drive--does
it? Is this a new product? What's the price?

    If this is the beast I think it is, it's like an advanced player piano.
    Comes with a built-in disk drive. Records anything you play on it and
    will play it back. Disks can be purchased (equivalent to rolls for a
    player piano). I'm sure there is much more to it, but I'm not that
    familiar with it.

    IMHO, the big advantage is that it is a REAL piano. Not a synth repro-
    duction of someone's idea of what a piano sounds like. Control is
    limited... I don't think is has modulation wheels, etc., so don't plan
    on comparing it to a KX88.

    I was quoted a price of 10K. Personnally, I thought it was a dog...
    Grandma would love it... the keys move like a player piano. Sounded
    very mechanical to me.

    	For what it's worth.

2216.2if anyone wants to see the beast in person...MIDI::DANAll things are possible...Thu Dec 28 1989 10:523
	I saw a local ad saying that Darrell's (sp?) in Nashua (on Main St.)
	has them.

Y* had a small bit right before Christmas on the TODAY show on NBC. They
had the WX11/WT11 combo and the disklavier piano. It will record what you
play and save it to disk. The guy played a small song and then played it
back. It seemed on the TV to sound the same, ie, with whatever nuance the
guy played. Mind you however, this was on a cheap TV...

2216.4I tried it briefly...FGVAXX::LAINGSoft-Core Cuddler*Jim Laing*282-1476Thu Dec 28 1989 19:1513
    I saw/listened to/tried one of these a few months ago. The price
    I remember (for the upgright version) was in the $7K-$8K region.
    Yes it has a disk drive, using 3.5" floppies. Has a basic 2-track
    sequencer built-in. Volume control alters the velocity ... you
    can hear and SEE it happen, since the keys in fact do move. I'm
    no piano expert, but it sounded quite nice to me. They had quite
    a few disks (a.k.a. "rolls") for sale for it too. They said they
    planned on having lots of "famous artists/players" create more disks
    on the Diskclavier, for sale.

    Oh, I saw it at Boston Piano 'n' Organ - in Reading, Mass, not Boston!
