1857.0. "Recommendation: New/Used 4Track/8Track Reel Tape Deck" by CAADC::COFBOUCHA (OA$SURF) Thu Jan 12 1989 13:54

I am in the market to pucharse a used 4 track or 8 track
reel-to-reel. I would like to go w/ the 8 track if possible but
my budget is limited to $1500. This price has to include the mixer.
    Recently, I came across a Fostex A-8 w/ a Fostex 350 8 channel mixer.
I have been told that they both are about 4 years old. They appear
to be in very good condition. I negotiated a price of $1200 for
the combo. In addition, the seller has agreed to throw in 3
microphones - 1 Teac recording mike, 1 Realistic recording mike
and 1 Shure Unidyne mike and all the necessary patch cables.
I know very little about reel-to-reels (i.e. features that are
available today, what to look for, how to test out, etc.) accept
from what I have read and what friends have shared with me. My
    questions are:

    1) Does this appear to be a good price assuming that both units
    work properly?

    2) What would be some relatively quick tests I could run on the
units to make sure everything is functional?

    FWIW:
The local want ad press here routinely has Tascam 38's for $1200
(Ive called about 4-6 different ones and they are low-user, 1yr
owned). They are sold along with a Fostex or Teac 16 channel mixer
(additional $800 usually) New, a good price seems to be $2400.
By the way, here is suburban NJ, NYC.
Good luck, your deal sounds ok IMO.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I got an a-8 with sure mike last
year (both heavily used) for $850. Sounds ok to me.
Years don't count as much as use I would think. Best to check
head for wear, do some record/playback on all tracks - make sure
you're getting the sound you want with the mike/cables/deck and
mixer. I tried getting a 350 mixer and just couldn't find any
    reasonable used prices - you're pretty lucky I think - I ended
up making my own mixer which leaves many things to be desired.
Check the transport on the deck. Also, the person I bought
my deck from was harping on maintainence and ways of abusing the
    deck. He claimed:
    	1. clean it every use - keeps head wear way down
    	2. recieved upgrade on transport and put it in
    	3. properly calibrated and never moved around
    	4. Never use full reel of tape since this beats on transport

You might want to ask/check on these things.
I'd've prefered the nicer sounding dbx decks but I had budget limits
    also.
    Good luck,
    Tim
