1820.0. "proposal: a COMMUSIC project" by NORGE::CHAD () Mon Dec 19 1988 13:42

Whereas: There are many talented COMMUSICers and

Whereas: Many people buy equipment at Daddy's Junky Music and

Whereas: Much of this equipment runs into four or more digits and

Whereas: Daddy's gives "free" 24 track studio time for big purchases and

Whereas: It would be sad to let all this potential go to waste, the following
         is hereby set forth:

Proposal: Let us unite for a COMMUSIC project and combine our free studio time
          to produce it.

Request: If you have any ideas that we could do for such a project or have
studio time accrued from Daddy's that you would like to donate or
both, then please raise your voice (or your fingers on keys) here
          and let it be known!

Possible ideas include, a conference wide sequence, where everybody helps out,
a series of such sequences (probably smaller), etc.

db had a good idea we discussed once at lunch. I will let him elaborate if he
wants to share the project with us.

How about it? Let us do domething fun together and also get this studio time
used and not not used.

Chad

PS: For those unfamiliar, Daddy's gives an hour per $1000 spent by a band of
24 tarck time up in Manchester. The only expense I am familiar with (I
haven't read the fine print) is for tape and such expendables. All of us
together would constitute a band for this purpose, so we can combine our
purchases for one grand total. Accrual is for one year at a whack, the
year starting at the earliest purchase that we claim.

I personally have $3000 + there or three hours.

One whole hour per 1000 bucks???? what a deal.

Last 24 track project I did took 38 hours counting mix time.
Let's see, that's 38,000 bucks worth of Daddy's merchandise, which
could have bought a good chunk of the 24 track studio.

Why not just get together, rent a room, and combine your equipment?

Not to shoot you down, but it sure smells like a questionable deal...
3 hours of 24 track time isn't much at ALL, like, it'll take about
10 hours to get a decent single done. You're almost cheaper just
pooling people together and making a nice 24-track recording, and
    to h**l with Daddy's.

Last time I checked, studio time was going pretty cheap ... Maybe
$20-$50 per hour? Seems to me that the incidentals sometimes cost
more (tape, leader, duplicates, and so forth). As for me, I just
finished my last project and am scrapping to find time for my next
project. But, if there's interest, I'll be happy to diddle ...

re: .1

I certainly don't plan on just me and my measly three hours will do any good.
But I am sure that if we COMMUSICers were to get together and pool our money -
purchases on a project that it would be a good amount of time.

Besides, if a lot (most?) of the stuff is pre-planned with sequences etc.
we won't need 10^6 hours there. I am sure that mostly live stuff takes a lot
more time to get done too (speaking from inexperience). Plus, I think
it would be a good experience for a lot of us to just get into a studio
and see how it works (again speaking from inexperience).

So, how about a COMMUSIC sequence, with everybody helping out...

(reminds me of some YES 20 minute tunes :-)

1820.4Take my studio time if you wish...MENTOR::REGLet's invent self referential image enhancing softwareMon Dec 19 1988 18:2312
re .0	I sort of offered my credit time a while ago, I think
its still valid and I'd still be happy to donate it to (almost)
anyone or any group that could make good use of it. Just say I've
been a member of your band since =~whenever, but I couldn't make
it tonight and here's my card.

re .1	OK, maybe its not a fist full of cash, its just a little
extra, think of it like green stamps; - and yes, you do get to keep
    the gear you bought too:-^)

Chad, if you WERE to get everyone organized and pull together a
monster sequence, most if not all of the gear would be driven by
MIDI, no ? It seems to me then all you'd need is to get everyone
to bring their MIDI SGU's to one place, hook to a master sequencer,
plug into a big board, and mix direct to stereo..

If there WERE audio involved, like with microphones, you STILL aren't
gonna need 24 tracks ! A good 8-track with a sync tone would cover
    it.

Has MIDI made 24 track setups obsolete ?

    re: .-1

I think you said what I was trying to say, only you said it a
    tad more tactfully.

I'd be more than happy to invite a bunch of you folks up to my
studio (bring more SGUs please) for some free studio time. I only
got 8 physical tracks, but Dr T's got forty eight, and I have yet
to fill more than thirteen. I got more than enough mikes, too.

'course, geographically, I might be a bit distant for some of
you, being about two hours noth of Concord NH... but the skiing
is nice if you get bored with mongo midi.

hmm, chad, maybe you're onto something. I like the idea of multiple
commusicians combining talent/equipment, it's just that I'm not
into 24-track studios, what with my measly mess I got here in the
    west coast of the east.
