1726.0. "small light for keyboard rack sought.." by HPSTEK::RENE (that dreaded FORMAT button....) Mon Oct 17 1988 17:20

        I am constantly fumbling up on stage with various disks, programs,
    menus,etc,etc,etc. It takes 8 or 9 seconds to load a Mirage disk,
    right?? This is bad but it is tolerable. But when I load THE WRONG
    DISK..I have to wait till it's done loading and then fumble for
    the right disk...then load it. Now hopefully I've loaded the correct
    bank..or then...
        The main reason this happens, to me at least, is that it is
    very bright up there until the end of the tune comes along and
    bang...darkness. The LED's from the keyboards are just not enough
    for me to see. My eyes are used to the lights.
        What I need is a small light to go on the keyboard rack. The
    light has to be VERY small as to not get in the way, and look too
    obvious. I have seen such a light on mixing boards. BUT I CAN'T
    FIND THEM ANYWHERE !!! I've checked Daddy's Salem and Nashua and
    both said something to the effect of "boy that would be nice" but
    they had never seen anything like that. I've looked in hardware
    stores, department stores, lighting stores, music stores, but have
    come up with nothing.

      I'd appreciate any help in locating one of these !!!

             Thanks !

1726.1They do exist, but I don't remember where.GEMVAX::LINNEHANReally DYO780::SCHAFER in MaynardMon Oct 17 1988 17:3314
    I *know* that they do exist, because I've seen them in use and
    advertised before ... problem is, I can't remember where right now, and
    I'm nowhere close to home (where I could probably find the info).

    A non-elegant solution (like a friend of mine did) is to get a little
    gooseneck light (goto your local lighting/electrical supply) with the
    xformer in the base. He detached the xformer from the rest of the
    light and ran a cable up the stand, strapped to the stand, with the
    gooseneck also strapped to the side of the stand. Sounds tacky, but it
    worked.

    Good luck - and make sure you post what you find out here.

    Two solutions:

    	1) Get one of the "paperback book personal lights", findable
    	in most bookstores...

    	2) The real "gooseneck" lights are available from most pro
    	audio stores. They go for about $30 and, IMHO, aren't worth
    	it.

1726.3Book Light...WEFXEM::COTEIt was a dark and stormy night...Mon Oct 17 1988 18:0213
    I use one of those "Itty Bitty Book Lights" like Bill mentioned.
    It has two features other than the obvious...

                 1) I can clamp it on my fake book and the
                    pages won't turn....

                 2) I can use it as a portable flashlight in a
                    pinch. Just the thing for making up set-lists
                    in the dark between sets...

    Can't beat it for $3!!

1726.4KeyBrite light...great!FGVAXR::LAINGSoft-Core-Cuddler*Jim Laing*261-2194Mon Oct 17 1988 19:2213
    I use a modified version of a small light I ordered via an ad in
    KEYBOARD mag. It's from a company called KEYBRIGHT, I think. They
    sell 'em in several sizes, from a few inches up to a few feet long.
    They are long, thing metal shells (1/2"x1/2"xwhatever_length_you_buy).
    I modified mine slightly, and mounted it with Velcro to the horizontal
    boom on my mic stand - it works great! It has 2 brightness settings,
    and I can angle it (by turning the mic boom) to light up both my
    keyboards and any "fake sheets" I may be using ...

    Most Keyboard mag's have this ad. If I remember I can post more
    info at a later time ...

    I bought one of those funky-looking mini spotlights from Pier 1,
    I think you can get them elsewhere too - they're about 9 bucks.
    They have little barn doors on them and a clip. I use a small bulb
    and a dimmer which I built out of a RatShack plastic box, a plug,
    a dimmer and a socket. Works for all musical applications, clips
    on either a music stand or my rack, the barn doors keep it from
    washing the dark stage with unwelcome light, and you can even stick
    a blue gel over the front of it.

1726.6light still at large...HPSTEK::RENEthat dreaded FORMAT button....Mon Oct 17 1988 20:077
    Thanks fo the suggestions so far. Brad, Which professional audio
    stores carry these? Do you mean a music store (Union Music) or say
    a stereo store (ala Tweeter) ? I have a book lite but the bulb burned
    out and I can't find a place that sells them. It looks like a common
    flashlight bulb but it screws into the socket. All the bulbs that
    I was able to find just plugged in and turned once to lock them
    in.
1726.7Electrical, not electronic.GEMVAX::LINNEHANReally DYO780::SCHAFER in MaynardMon Oct 17 1988 20:1110
    I dunno about music stores ... being a former apprentice journeyman, I
    always go to the local wholesaler for any electrical components,
    including lights. The store I meant in my note was a store that deals
    in retail/wholesale (preferable) *electrical* (not electronic)
    components.

    May want to follow Jim Laing's suggestion ... the "under the kybd" type
    lights would be very appealing to me.

    The cheapest little gizzie I've seen is the Goldline Racklite. It's
    about $15 and runs on a battery. You can stick it onto the inside
    top edge of your rack.

    Next up would be a GoldLine or Littlelite gooseneck lamp. They are
    available in various lengths, like 9", 12", and 18" with wall bug
    transformers and dimmer bases. They are about $35, have halogen
    bulbs (bright) and accept gels.

    Then there is the Furman PL1 which is a dual lite setup along with
    an isolated, filtered power strip that takes one rack space. Newer
    models have a LED voltage indicator. They are $150 or so.

    I use Littlelites, they're great.

1726.11bite the bulletHPSTEK::RENEthat dreaded FORMAT button....Tue Oct 18 1988 16:0514
        Well, I really think I need something that doesn't have batteries,
    because chances are that I will be stuck with dead batteries
    eventually. I also think I need a dimmer as lighting will be different
    from one place to the next. I probably will bite the bullet and
    get the kind that have the wall bug,dimmer and lite. I called Music
    Emporium for a catalog. I used to get these catalogs too. Don't
    know why they stopped sending them.
        Is Music Emporium quick on orders or might it take weeks just
    to get the catalog ??

              Thanks again

    I find battery operation to be a plus. The last thing I need is
    another wall bug.

    I've already got two 6 outlet powerstrips daisy chained for gigs.
    (Mirage, DX, TZ, MKS, MVII, mixer, reverb, amp, sequencer, data-dec,
    sometimes a second HR) argh....

1726.13STROKR::DEHAHNTue Oct 18 1988 19:039

    I'm almost positive it's a 9V battery. I don't think a spare will
    take up too much room in your gig box, or taped to the inside of
    the rack.

    BTW the Littlelites are 12VDC.
