973.0. "Super Piano Patch for Yamaha DX7?" by PLAYA::MERLIN () Thu Oct 08 1987 20:14

    Hi everybody...

    If you have a Yamaha DX-7 and read the Keyboard magazine latetly,
    you're reading the right topic.

    Since february I have been reading about a DX-7 patch that runs for
    $20.00 !!! The advertisement claims that this patch is the best
    acoutic piano ever build, real, full 88 notes wide... I've been
    tracking it and I think that it stills been announced in the
    magazine. Where did I see it? Last mag. pages, somewhere in specials,
    user market, misc... I'm not sure where now.

    Do any of you have this incredible patch ?

    Never even heard of it. Do you have an address or a phone number?
    $20 isn't that bad if its all its cracked up to be.

    It is an interesting concept, but it sounds like it could be snake
    oil.

973.2Hello, Postal Service?JAWS::COTEIf you's a viper...Fri Oct 09 1987 16:557
    I've seen the ad a few times, in the spring. They wanted everyone
    to send them $20 and then wait. According to the ad, they weren't
    going to ship immediately to cut down on bootlegging....

    I shudder at the thought...

    What you mean ? It's the perfect copy protection scheme !
    They never ship any, therefore the public can never illegally
    copy same !

    ... saves on R&D also.

    Of course when I *do* come up with the perfect DX7 piano patch (it's
    inevitable that I will), they'll scream I stole it!!!

973.6Let's not discuss this here....JAWS::COTEIf you's a viper...Mon Oct 12 1987 10:5510
    The issue of 'sharing' patches ("Let's get 5 people to pay $4
    apiece...") has been vigorously debated all over town. While the
    jury is still out on the legalities of such, I feel fairly certain
    DEC would prefer NOT to see invitations posted on the net to do
    so.

    I suggest that any further conversation along the the lines of .5
    be taken 'off-line'.

973.7Demo tape mini-reviewREGENT::SIMONEWed Oct 14 1987 20:1417
    Back to the subject of the patch itself...

    I ordered the demo tape of the patch. It only cost $2.50. I haven't
    ordered the patch yet and I'm not sure if I will.

    In some ways, the ad is correct and it is a fairly close imitation
    of an acoustic piano. But the imitation is not close enough to
    be convincing and I didn't find the sound terribly pleasant.

    I think I prefer my existing DX7 piano patch. Even though it has
    a more limited range and is not as close an imitation of the real
    thing, I find the sound more pleasant.

    Perhaps with a little chorusing and reverb...

    To .7 Guido:

       Good. Keep track of topic 976 where I'll soon post some patches.
    Check the sound called SPI_PIANO (Spinet Piano), is not Acoustic
    but listen it and tell me about it.

    To .6 :

      I still don't know the rules of the game.
