928.1My 21 sounds like a real drum *machine*...JAWS::COTENote stuck? Try Kawai...Wed Sep 02 1987 14:295
    From what I've heard the RX17 is a combination RX21 & RX21-L.

    Can anyone comment on the sounds?

928.2I Do 3/4 over 4/4 by just not playing the last beat!DRUMS::FEHSKENSWed Sep 02 1987 18:006
    Could you elaborate on what you mean by combining 3/4 and 4/4 in
    the same pattern? By 3/4 do you really mean 12/8 for a "swing"
    feel to the ride beat?

    I don't think they took any notice of my complaints about the snare.
    Still sounds like a box of wet matchsticks being dropped.

    Hey you guys .3 and .4, this topic is to discuss the RX17!

    re .2 : Yes, Len, that'it : you write bass drum and snare in 4/4
    (well, 16/16) and ride in 12/8 in the same pattern, and it works!

    Sounds: No separate outputs makes it difficult to EQ instruments,
    but overall quality and dynamics outstanding. I used to have Roland's
    TR707 because it had better sounds than the RX15 or RX21. Now I
    think Yamaha is back. The open hi-hat is excellent, you can actually
    hear the trembling of the two little cymbals. Latin percussions
    quite realistic, I like the shaker most, very good for basic rock/disco
    rythm, like "Billie Jean", mid-tempo stuff.

    I'm having trouble trying to sequence patterns because the method
    is different from Roland but I am confident I will manage it quick.

    Does anyone know how to get separate outputs for all instruments
    ? Wiring diagram please if possible.

    How much does the machine cost in the States ?

    I'm writing this reply in response to 2217.1 (since moved or deleted)
    which characterised the RX17 as basically a preprogrammed box

    It's much more than that - in fact it will store 99 patterns and
    up to 6 songs in RAM. You can load preset patterns held internally
    into the top 49 RAM pattern locations.
    Comparing it with the Roland TR626 (the only other MIDI unit I have
    experiance of), it has an easier and more intuitive UI, a better
    and more flexible MIDI implementation, more latin sounds (bongos
    cuicas, whistle etc), and less conventional sounds (EG only one
    snare, bass drum etc).

    The sounds IMO are pretty good, and the snare that Paul complains
    of in .4 is a better than my Korg KPR77, although not as "modern"
    as the Roland snares.

    I'm using it as my drum SGU, and its fine for me. By the way I
    paid 160 pounds for it (used) about 6 months ago. At that time,
    they were being sold off new for about 200-220 pounds.
