| Oil leak -
I have a 89 Golf, manual gearbox, car has 161,000 miles. Almost all
highway mileage, normal PM has been performed with all oil and oil
filter changes taking place at 3K miles.
I have noticed an oil leak (currently leaving couple drops every night
on the ground). The leak is coming from the drivers side of the oil
pan, this is the side of the engine that mates to the gearbox assembly.
I am unable to tell if the leak is the oil pan gasket or is coming from
higher up on the side of the engine. If it is higher up then that
would most likely point to a leaking main engine oil seal.
Question is - Has anyone with Golf/Jetta with this level of mileage
seen oil leaks in the area, and what were they.
Has anyone replaced the oil pan gasket them selves? If you have how
did you manage to get a socket on the bolts that are mostly blocked
by the gearbox/transaxle assembly.

I had problems with the oil sending unit on mine, but maybe that
would be pretty easy for you to rule out.

| Howard - I would bet the oil pan is not leaking. The likely culprit in your
rear mail seal. This is quite common as the Rabbits/Golfs get up there in
mileage and if you can do the work yourself, it's not too expensive. Have
you ever replaced the clutch? Have you noticed the clutch slipping under
heavy acceleration?
The basic steps to resolve this are to drop the tranny, pull the clutch,
pressure plate and flywheel off the engine, pull the rear main seal housing
off and replace the seal.
The parts you'll want to buy when you do this are:
clutch
pressure plate
throw out bearing
rear main seal
oil pan gasket
A garage will probably charge you $300-$400 to do this work, but if you want to,
doing it yourself (with a friend) isn't too bad.
If you want to let the oil leak go, the worst case is, the seal will rupture at
some point and dump oil all over the clutch.... The current leak may not get
any bigger for months or more, but if you can schedule the repair, I'd suggest
it.

| This leak is not at the oil preasure sensor (that is a very common
place for oil leakage).
The car still has the orginal clutch that is still in good shape.
I had cleaned the area up of oil about a week ago and got another
chance this weekend to look. Looks like oil leak is higher then
the oil pan gasket. So far everything leads me to believe the
rear main oil seal is leaking.
I have been planning on running this car for at least one or two
more years (20K to 40K additional miles). It needs summer tires
again, and a possible front wheel bearing. Sure would like to
see this car roll over to 200K!
Got to fix another exhaust leak. I would recomond that one avoids a
"Leistritz" performance exhaust setup - They only last 1 to 1.5 years.
Clutch replacement is most likely a little out of my car repair level.

| I'm sure we can convince Shawn to help you out with the clutch/rear main seal
job....:-) The special tools (2 different sizes of 12 point hex sockets are
about the only 'abnormal' tools you'll need) will run you less than $20 and the
other parts, probably about $100.

| Are you sure the leak is engine oil and not trans. oil? The
smell on the trans. oil is much stronger. Trans. seals tend to
spring leaks also. Either to the outside or into the cv joint.
Replacement of the seal for the cv joint just requires you to
disconnect the inner cv joint. Replacement of the other seal requires
that plus removal of the spring loaded flange that the cv joint
connects to. Putting back that flange requires either a special tool
or a breaker bar and a friend.

| It has been stated in here several times but I think a refresher is in
order. Make absolutely sure the socket head bolts are cleaned out
before you start undoing the inner CV joint. They strip easily and
then it is a huge PIA to get them out with vice grips or similar.

| More on that Golf with oil leaks -
Yes I am aware of the final axle drive seals leaking -- Mine have
always leaked since day one on this car. I had both seals replaced
around 60K, but it did not help at all. Since that time the manual
gearbox has been running Amsoil synthetic lube (it sure helps the
cold shifts). I have to refill a very small amount of lube about
once a year to replace the leakage.
