130.0. "NanananaNanananaHeyHeyHey...Goodbye" by WREATH::DEVLIN (It's just time to say hor d'oevre...) Mon Jul 12 1993 14:34

Well folks, It's that time - the time for JD to say farewell to all of you
in SPORTS.

I've put in my two week notice, and I'll be leaving Digital. It wasn't an
easy decision, but it was the best one for me. I've met many of you, and
have made some good friends. I'm sure some folks won't be all choked
up to see me go ;-)

Anyway, I've here are my Ten Reasons for Leaving Digital:

10. Have a chance to be Doug Flutie's personal valet

9. Have a chance to moonlight at the New York Daily News in the Super Hype
     Department

8. Air Nathan called and wants me to be his caddy

7. Have a chance to be in the pit crew at LeMans

6. Got a federal grant to research if "Right Left" works as well as "Left Right"

5. Having a frog implanted in my throat, getting dipped in tanic acid, and
then becoming the new Johnny Most

4. Joining Snuffy Smif's wife in her righteous crusade

3. Plan to buy the Patriots and move them to Fargo, North Dakota

2. Have a guest slot on "Don Cherry's Grapevine" all lined up

1. Becoming Baseball's new commishioner....

130.14Owners needed for rotis teams...WREATH::DEVLINIt's just time to say hor d'oevre...Mon Jul 12 1993 18:0738
Oh yeah, before I forget -

I have 3 rotis. teams that need a new owner:

FOOTBALL:

the Pernicious Gits of Div. C. Won the FFL Super Bowl a few years ago.
Needs some new blood. Does have established starts such as Barry
Sanders and Dan Marino. Contact me if interested.

BASKETBALL:

The Bronx Cheers. This is a team of promise. I started rebuilding last
year, and I believe I have the #1 pick this year. Have established super
star Clyde Drexler (also known as "Trade Bait") = and have a ton of
young studs - including Alonzo Mourning, Jimmy Jackson, Robert Horry, Sean
Rooks and Walt Williams. Contact me if interested.

BASEBALL:

THE Silver Slugs. A long, slow building process is showing some signs of
working. Have a good starting pitching staff, anchored by Billy Swift and
Darryl Kile, while I have youngsters Pedro Astacio and Steve Cooke, matched
with wily veterans Zane Smith and Tom Caniotti. Relief pitching has struggled
as Doug Jones hasn't been the go to go he was last year.

Offensively, still need help, but have a slew of young budding talent, such
as Royce Clayton,Chuck Carr, Steve Jordan, Dieon Sanders, Luis Alicea, Al Martin along with
Andres Gallaraga, Rick Wilkins, HoJo, Todd Zeile, Steve Buechele and Mariano
DUncan.

A few good deals (without giving away the youngsters) could cement a great team.

Contact me if interested.

If I get no takers these teams will be handed over to the league presidents...

I remember a few years back, getting out of my car at a dusty parking lot
at Foxboro, and meeting this guy that was a dead ringer for Phil Simms.

Then, a couple of years later, I remember this guy getting out of a
taxi in front of the Meadowlands Days Inn wif a backpack, a crew cut,
and some story about going to Seattle. I also remember him crushinga
an iced tea carton on his haid and showering the folks in front of him.

The year after I remember sitting next to him at the Manis, while we
both just about died from the Marlboro Man's second hand smoke, and
later that night, his near-death experience in the upper bunk of the
HellCamper.

The next year, I was in Seattle. I remember many nights spent in a
hotel bar, checking out the lingerie show (Beth lost out on you JD) and
dumping Kelly Stauffer on his butt.

And then coming back from Seattle, and yet another Manis....

It's been fun JD. I'll miss ya.

Good luck,

From Rte.93 - Take 93 south to Rte 495 South take the Rte. 110 exit
which is the one mile or so past the Rte. 3 Interchange. Take a left - the Ground
Round is on your right about 1/4 mile or so up - in the same parking lot as the

This is truly a sad note for me to write...

Last night I was talking to THE neighbor's father-in-law, and I found
out that she is now seperated from her husband, and living in an
apartment. The news in itself is bad enough, but to have it happen
right before Halloween (most of you will remember how she answered the
door on Halloween) is really a tragedy. At least my wife will let me
go trick or treating this year. I did find out one thing about her
though-- she was, previous to moving to AZ, once employed by the
Golden Banana. So maybe some of you guys HAVE met my neighbor.

Well, I didn't feel like starting a new note when this one would do.

I've accepted a new job and will start as of Nov. 13, 1993. I will be in here
as late as the 12th of November before starting my new job, which is in a whole
new field, compared to fixing these damned computers. I had my final interview
yesterday, after which they offered me the job immediately, and I accepted.
I'll be working in a pretty big establishment here in Pittsburgh, dealing with
a bunch of smaller customers.

I've enjoyed all my time in this notesfile, and don't know what I'd have done
over the past 5 or 6 years without it, probably have gotten some REAL work done.

Just thought I'd let people know that I am outta here on Feb 18. No innocent
college prank or practical joke. I've been looking to move on for quite some
time when it became apparent that DEC isn't the place for software engineers
that are interested in application work. While this company might make some
really good hardware and a good operating system in OSF it isn't the place for
me any longer.

When I started here 9 year ago I thought I'd work here my entire career but
things have only gotten worse in my area of expertise. David Stone (despite his
many faults) was the last shot we had at making software a viable business and
when we had a VP out here a couple of months ago state that selling lots of
software at a low price wasn't a viable business model (despite the success of
Microsoft 2 minutes down the street) I knew I had to leave.

I'll be working at a decent sized (1500 employees) medical products company
writing some neat applications. I've always been facinated with the medical
field so I'm pretty excited about this.

I've been reading sports since the Notes-11 days and seen quite a cast of
characters come and go. I've enjoyed "discussing" sports with you and I'll miss
the banter and tavern.

I thought I'd put this in today just in case I get escorted out the door ( I
don't expect it to happen). I'm pretty sure my e-mail address will be
metzger@spacelabs.com so Kev can add it to the list.....

Later and good luck,

A more elegant description of the heart of the problem has never been

Sung to the tune of gilligans island....
*****************************************

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of college hoop.
Lay back and enjoy it
You'll get the whole scoop....

The coach was a mighty recruiting man.
The center tall and smart.
Five superstars played ball that day,
JR was sure to start
Was sure to start

The team fell behind real quick.
The opposition was fouling Reid.
If not for the coaching of Reverend Smith,
Things would be bleak indeed
Would be bleak indeed.

UNC will come back to win,
This championship game.
With JR Reid,
The Reverend too,
Mike Jordan and Daugherty.
The multi-dimensional James
and the rest.
The ACC's best
Here at The University.....

  *** Closing Credits ***

Now here is the tale of the best hoop team
ever to grace the floor.
They all come from UNC
They'd kick bobbies team out the door.

JR and the Reverend too
Will do their very best,
To make sure that the other teams
Call the ACC the best.

No swearing,no fights, no Mr T.
not a single recruiting scam.
Unlike Clemson's program,
UNC's the best in the land.

So join us here each week my friend
You're sure to get a smile.
From the top hoops program in the country
Carolina's the best by a mile....

July 23 is Colorado Springs day at Mile Hi. Ticket are $5, $8 and $12 @ Old
Chicago's and if I remember correctly Gart Bro's. for $5,8 and 12. I would
guess their Rockpile and outfield seats with a few in the infield sections

130.224You'll all be missed by meMPO::MPO12::MCFALLI needed 1 more fare to make my nightFri Jun 17 1994 14:4627

Well, folks, I know it has been a long time since many of you heard from
me, but I've really been busy with work the last 2 years or so. But, not busy
enough to have someone cut out my entire group. So, after 16.8 years, I'll
be leaving DEC today.

This conference has been my home away from home for the past 8 years.
Many of you will never know the dark times it helped me get through when I was in
Colorado. You made me laugh - sometimes at others, sometimes at myself, which
was most important.

I will take away some really fond memories of this address, and I'll miss
all of twists and turns that cropped up here.

Don't let anyone kid you - if you've been here any length of time at all,
this hurts like hell, it really does, and all of the "up" talk only helps a
little bit. I know I'll eventually be fine, and probably be better off with new
challenges that await me. In the meantime, it's people like you that I will miss
most of all.

Stay sharp. And may each and every one of you have peace and happiness
in your lives, whether in or out of DEC.

Warmest regards to all of you,

	Jim M.

Well, now that the papers are signed and all, I can decrypt my notes.

I start at HP in Ft Collins July 11. Even though I think the only
noter I ever met in Mass was Eddie Fissette (for Darwin's unbelievable
1-hitter last year) aside from the Hudsonites, it would be a definite
win to get out and talk Rocks and Broncs with you Colorado folk. I'll
be online until July 1. I can transfer the money for a ticket into
someone's DCU account if they'll order the tickets. Would be a good
start to my second trip through Colorado.

I am also the proud inheritor of a nice pair of Buff's seasons tickets,
will keep you guys in mind when the season rolls around.

Thanks all, this was a great way to while away the downtime while
management was redirecting projects, or the VMS upgrades 8-0

Talked to Kev tonight on the onephay.

he apologizes fer not entering a goodbye note, didn't get the chance,
was very busy. He feels terrible cause he had a lot of things to say
to the friends he's mnade thru the notesfile. He didn't know how,
without the support of you lunatics, he would have ever gotten over
Greg's death and he wishes there were some way he could truly express
his gratitude for the efforts his friends made to help him thru that
    trying time.

He still thinks that SJU [hates the name Red Storm] is going to kick
UCoNN's butt and embarrass the daylights out of Mikey's thugs.

Also said that counting TFSO and all, he'll run out of income Oct 2nd,
    so save yer money now.

Lastly, Kev said that friend told him that people are successfully
arguing to the unemployment peoples that TFSO is not a severance, but a
settlement, so if you gt TFSO'd, ya cain probably start collecting
    unemployment immediately.

130.227PTOVAX::JACOBSat Aug 06 1994 01:519
Kev also said that he would like to get on the internet, but doesn't
know if he can afford it right now or if it is something he wants
versus something he MUST have(future job consideration or fun???).

he said if he does get on the internet, he'll let us know his account
    and all.

Ok, I can put this in now...

My last day here is Oct. 27th. I'm going to work for Adobe Systems
(PostScript, Illustrator, Acrobat, Photoshop...) in Mountain View, CA.
I should be able to be reached as of Nov. 7th at washe@mv.us.adobe.com

    Unlike others in here:

    1) I'm not faking this departure
    2) I'm not going to ramble on about how beautiful you guys are and what
a hole in my life they'll be I can't check in here. I mean how
great can this be if Hal's leading KOH? (half smiley goes here).
    3) I don't care if Cam Neely is God, or John Elway, Dean Smith, Bobby
Knight, RCASO, Bubby Brister, J_e Walt_n, Roger Clemens, Greg
Swindell, OJ, Nancy Kerrigan. I don't care about boxing until Tyson
gets back. It doesn't matter how many copies of /Don's workout
video or the regular guy calendars got sold. I DO care about what
happened to Hawk's stack of Fenway tickets though. It has nothing to
do with that girl Jen or whatever her name was at the Patriot's Day
game that Tommy saw me with. And I think the reason Marky travels
abroad is to visit those girls who thought he was really cute in the
great Lat posedown. I am glad I was Karen's VPNOTY running mate. I
think the run and shoot is overrated, and I don't care who's won how
       many superbowls.
    4) I will not use any quote from Bill Durham. Maybe Buckaroo Banzai.
    5) The Celts still sip and Bill Laimbeer really was misunderstood by
       all of you.

    Does that cover it all?

    8) No one REALLY cares about Wesleyan football
    9) Nobody in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincinnati or Denver would last

Walt, you'll be missed. Already I'm feeling the burden of keeping up
the East Coast half of the Great Buckaroo Banzai Perpetuation Society all
by myself.

I'm not gonna tell you that SPORTS will never be the same without you, because
it hasn't been the same for a long time. It's just one more brick outta the
wall, so to speak. I will tell you that Tiger-mania won't be the same, or
Patriots Day, or the Get Togethers....

I will wish you the best of luck and the best of life. I will tell you to
always remember "Wherever you go, there you are", and I will tell you that
you always have a place to stay when you're on the East Coast.....

Finally, I'll miss you bud.....

The major difference is Ainge is a pretty boy while Laimbeer is

Oh yeah, one other difference - Laimbeer used to look to nail somebody

No, not a college prank.

In fact, I think that Riggo has hit on the prime way of getting any kind
of a competitive salary here at DEC.

I've known of a few people now who have gone seeking other jobs, and getting
offers with more $$$ than they're currently making. In some cases we're
talking major increases (up to 10K!).

They then present that to their manager, and say, hey, I want to stay, but
economically I can't.

The manager's then match the offer.

TCM, I already expressed best wishes on your July plans via mail, but
(being about a week behind in this notesfile) only just learned of your
plans to leave us. Sorry as hell to see you go, and of course wish you
success in that endeavor as well.

While you folks are considering a get together in June, let me throw this
in. The plans are not settled yet, but right now, there is a good chance
I'll be in the Boston area for a week starting about Friday June the 9th.
I could make it to a get together anywhere from Monday 12th to Wednesday
14th, assuming things work out. I'd love to have a chance to meet some
of you person to person.

I'll miss this notesfile and all you loonies - even Tommy.
Some final "wishes":

1. To Chappy: Donny M. does not get into the HoF or into the postseason.

2. To Groaner and Hal: that you wait a very long time for a Clevescum team
to win and NBA, MLB, NFL (Super Bowl), or NHL (if you ever get a team)
championship.

3. To all you Red Sox fans a WS victory (but not with the scabs) in your
lifetimes.

4. To =bob= : Having to see Pat Riley win another championship.

5. To MikeC: the chance to root for a team and not against one.

Please keep me informed of get-togethers; I'll do my best to attend as long
as I am still within the Boston area. It has been fun. Catch you on the
bitstream.

Just remember you can't go wrong rooting for the Mets, Jets, Knicks, and

Wail, as some of you know from a mail message, I've given notice. My last day
will be Friday, April 14. I'm on my to a company called International Data
Corporation (IDC), where I've taken a job as an industry anyalyst.

I've very excited about the opportunity, it's something I was never quite able
to obtain here at Digital. It combines writing (what I do now) with marketing
(what I've always wanted to do). The company's product is research, so I will
be responsible directly for producing products, and to a large extent, selling
them.

As I said in my mail message, I don't beleive that Digital is a sinking ship, or
that anyone who stays is nuts, etc. My reasons for leaving are partially
financial, and partially a chance to do something that I've always wanted to do.
A job is what you make of it, and when you can't make any more of it, it's time
to change.

If it follows the form of the others that I know, my internet address will be
RMCCULLOUGH@IDCRESEARCH.COM. The company is in Framingham, so I should still be
able to make the occasional get together.

Take care all, and stay in touch.

    5/24, but I'm on vacation next week and there's a 50/50 chance I'll be
    shown the door today.

I've accepted a job as Worldwide Marketing Mgr at IBM Microelectronics
Division (Waltham MA), responsible for PowerPC and x86 products. It is
with mixed emotions that I leave Digital after 8.5 years, but this is an
opportunity (working for my former mgr in the PCBU) that I just couldn't
    pass up.

You may recall that I spent some time recently with Walt Ashe out in
the Valley....Well at is turns out, I was interviewing at Apple for a
Marketing Mgr position in the PowerMac group in Cupertino. Eventually,
I did receive an offer, but decided I couldn't make the physical move.

One of the references I used for the Apple position was the
    aforementioned manager at IBM.

Anyway, best of luck with your endeavors, wherever they may take you.

knowing I made a contribution to one of the most staggering turnarounds

wonderin'.... Is Mark Lufay the guy who told the hunting story
of strappin' a deer to the top of his truck and putting a reddish
ball on the nose of the deer??? That one really cracked me up!!
Anyway good luck Mark and don't you also drive a BMW???

Hey guys, for various reasons, I've decided to do a "delete entry SPROTS".
Over the years, I've had a ball sittin in this sports bar listening to you
pump up your team, celebrate the victory's and cry on the bad days. There's
been enough hot air in here to fly the GoodYear blimp. And there's been
some wisdom shown by some people like Glenn Waugamain and Billl Long.
There have been times when some noters have gone through some very hard times
in their lives and people in this conference have done what ever they
could to help. A true class act by all of you. And who could ever forget
the classic confrontations between Groaner/Hal and Jake. Hal, Groaner, no
matter what has been said over the years, I think you guys are great and
are always entertaining to listen to. I'll admit, my poetry stinks but the
poems that Jake used to post were pure classics. There's been a lot of guys
come and go in the Big 8 conference but I'll especially remember Clay Wade,
Joe Cotanch and Marty. I'll also miss Mike Leary and Dan'l who are no
longer here but their ghosts still seem to linger.

  Good Luck to everybody.

On the bright side, I heard from a friend of Jim Dinsmore's the other day.

Seems that Dinz is living up on the Cape (East Falmouth I think) and not with
his father or brother. He's been sober two years and is doing well.

He's currently trying to get some kind of visitation rights to his daughter. I
guess his ex is being a royal pain.

It was nice to hear about jIm dINzmoRe after all this time.....

And now I know why I was never fortunate to get dumbsized: I din't post a
reply. I'm sure I popped Mike a line but after the infamous "small
software" company that MrT left for followed by a couple others (JaKe
comes to mind), I was gun shy about believing people were actually moving
on with their lifes while I was not.

When I grow up and find out what I wanna do, I just hope that I have a
chance to post my own eulogy.

And I just got a memo from my latest big time VP and he told us in no
uncertain terms that he would not be firing any managers.

Why am I not surprised.

The "wires" are hot with messages from the VPs these days, tellin' us all about
the new moves they're makin' to make the company an industry leader.

If they'd pull their haids outta their arses for just a few minutes I could
tell them that we're alreayd a_industry leader -- in layoffs.

Shessh....

Buncha bonehaids tryin' to sell us on their bonehaided moves after they
totally buggered up the company beyond fixing three or four years ago.....
