1336.0. "Video tape on basic weight lifting?" by PCBUOA::BAYJ (Jim, Portables) Thu May 29 1997 16:39

I stopped by Suncoast Video this weekend to find a video tape that
shows proper lifting techniques. I really couldn't find anything that
    looked good.

Let me rephrase. I couldn't find anything that looked like a basic
introduction to lifting. There were a ton of aerobics tapes, one by
every supermodel and star imaginable, including Cher!

There were one or two lifting tapes, but they looked more like advance
stuff, and featured really big folks on the covers. I'm looking for
something for the casual, beginning lifter. I'd also prefer something
that doesn't overly emphasize benches or universals, since I don't have
either, nor room for them (I have access to a universal, but I don't
think I'm quite ready for it, as getting to it would be more of a
disruption than help to my current morning program).

I have a couple books, but they don't tell the whole story. I have a
CD that demonstrates a few basic moves, but its pretty basic.

If you know of tapes that are available in the Boston metrowest area,
or by mail order, that would be great.

    Thanks!

jeb,

have you looked at men's fitness yet? it's a magazine that caters to beginners
and naturalists and may have something you can order. i know all the hardcore
bb'ing wl'ing mags have tapes, etc but they feature the really big guys/gals;
if you can forgive youself for watching these monsters, they really do cover the
basics it's just that you have to plow through a little arrogance, maybe some
posing, and some of their tried and trusted tips.

good luck!

reg.

p.s. a local gym will even be helpful in providing the information, granted
you may have to pay for some training 8^(

one just has to remember to: breathe out, breathe in, lift up, lift down, push
out, pull in, press up, press down, back flat, back arched, head up, head down,
suppinate, pronate, twist, lock, keep parrallel, keep perpendicular, contract,
relax, concentric, ecentric,... what i miss folks? oh, toes in, toes out, toes
straight, [toes backwards ! 8^0!], hip width stance, shoulder width stance,
[split !], 2 day split, 3 day split, 4 day split, 5 day split [no one does a
different one do they?] later

I thought that Lee Labrada's "Mass with Class" wasn't too bad - they do slow
motion stuff during the lifts so that you can see proper form. I don't remember
where I got the tape though - I think it may have been a freebie with something
else.

1336.3Try renting first?HOTLNE::CORMIERThu May 29 1997 18:3421
    jeb,
Try renting a tape first, before making the committment to purchase.
Most videa rental places have a couple fitness tapes anyway.

I agree with reg here. Just because the tapes feature huge freakish
bb'ers, doesn't mean the routines are difficult. A bicep curl is a
bicep curl, whether you are using 10 pounds or 110 pounds. The form is
the same, the muscles are the same (they just look better on them!),
the posture is the same. And the names are the same - curl, press,
squat, etc. Those tapes by the supermodels are all quite basic.

Do you get any of the cable channels? ESPN2 has several fitness
programs that show you how to work out.

The Firm tapes are fairly basic - I think they are discussed in the
Weight Loss notesfile. Most novices really enjoy them.

What equipment are you planning to use? Dumbbells? Bars? Elastic
bands? Joining a gym? Just curious what your next phase is.

I'm using light dumbells right now, cause they don't take up a lot of
room. I literally don't have room for a bar, much less a bench right
    now.

My wife's ab-thingy lives in the living room for want of a better place
to put (and use) it. The hard part is going to be cleaning up the spare
room to make space for more equipment! :-)

My condo complex has a workout room with a universal that I can use any
time. Once I get a little further along, I'll probably try to use it
one or two days a week.
